World Disabled Day - Cultural evening with Special Children
World Disabled Day or the International Day of People with Disability, which is celebrated every year on 3rd
December all over
the World, was promoted by the United Nations since 1992 to encourage a better understanding of people affected by a
disability, to make them more aware of their rights, dignity and welfare, and integrating disabled persons into every aspect of
life, from economic, to political, to social and cultural. Based on these guidelines, and as part of RYLA Vishesh, cultural
evening in our weekly meeting on December 01, 2017 was special and memorable for all of us with participation of special
children supported by their teachers, from Vatika School, Blind Institute, Prayaas Rehabilitation Centre and Gurukul Global
School, to recognize their talents and to acknowledge their achievements.
Eleven years ago, on 2nd
December 2006 when Rtn. Dr. V.J.S. Vohra was the President, R‟ann Maniki Deep had organized a
similar outstanding cultural program, in which disabled children of the tricity had given an amazing performance at the Carnival
Plaza, Sector 17, Chandigarh, where Maniki used to organize Plaza Carnival regularly for more than 15 years. Last Friday, the
program at Hotel Shivalikview was very meticulously planned, executed and anchored by R‟ann Maniki Deep, where children
with disabilities proved that with due motivation and expert training by their teachers, they can mesmerize the audience!
The event began with National anthem presented in sign language followed by Invocation, Saraswati Vandana, solo Kathak
performance, Punjabi folk dance and ended with a vibrant bhangra. Visually challenged singers Shiv Kumar Sharma and Labh
Singh entertained us with Mohd Rafi songs. The performers were felicitated by Dr. Shivani Verma, Gladrags Mrs Punjab pride
of nation who represents „Beauty with a purpose‟, and supports the cause of disability empowerment.
„Gift of hearing‟, a short film on „disability to ability‟ was shown by President Dr. Rita Kalra. It‟s cast and crew was honoured
on behalf of the club by PP Rtn. R.T.P.S. Tulsi. Councellor Family of Rotary R‟ann Lovy Peter also honoured the participants.
