• WTG-161 (old number was 159). Best Practices Guidelines for Cooling Water Systems – Jack Bland reported - The group had two meetings. There is a draft of the projected best prac-tices table. This is currently in the form of a matrix of nine categories with “Good, Better, Best” measures, results or numbers for each category. The consensus of the group is to continue to move forward with a table of “Good, Better, Best” results or targets for results and to attempt to segregate these by industry. The group is also seeking to develop a series of questions for a survey of the cooling water treatment users to determine what the perception or consensus of these “Good, Better, Best” results or targets for results currently is among a larger group of cooling system owners and users.
III. liaison reports• AHR Exposition: Frank Morrison reporting. There was a Session in January of this year. It was very well attended. In the past, CTI has given training sessions about cooling water. There is an opportunity to give a session in January 2016 in Orlando, Florida if we are interested in doing so.
• ASHRAE: Sarah Ferrari reporting. The ASHRAE meeting took place in Chicago two weeks ago. The water treatment section of the ASHRAE handbook is being revised for the next edition of the handbook. ASHRAE is moving towards a research project to investigate the effectiveness of sessile bacteria monitoring methods in cooling water systems.

is an educational enrichment development program.• IWC: Paul Puckorius reporting. The 75th anniversary of the International Water Conference was held in San Antonio, Texas in November 2014. This was a large conference with 20 work-shops, including a cooling water based workshop. There was an excellent panel discussion and very well attended exhibits.
• NACE: Christine McGinnis reporting. Based on attending the last several meetings, and including this meeting in San Antonio in March 2014, the interest at NACE has shifted away from water in favor of increased focus on oil and gas. The next meeting is in March 2015 in Dallas, TX.
Iv. Additional business:The WTG 147 Water Reuse document is up for review and will be reviewed by Phil Kiser and Charles Kuhfeldt, as the chair
and co-chair of the task group that produced the document, to determine if it needs a task group review.Phil Kiser stated that an inquiry has been made to determine if the CTI is interested in collaborating with ASHRAE to fund a research project to examine the effectiveness of various methods of monitoring sessile bacteria. A brief discussion was held and the matter was tabled by the chairman for lack of time in the closing meeting to make a determination of how to proceed.
v. AdjournmentThe motion to adjourn was made and seconded and the meeting adjourned at 2:30 PM on the final day.M

Humor in the Cooling Tower IndustrySome of the articles, titled "Cooling Towers I Have Known" were written by the late Maxey Brooke as Senior Consultant for Puckorius & Associates, Inc. and contributed by Maxey to The Journal of the Cooling Tower Institute (CTI). Maxey was active with CTI for 40 years."During the 1950's newly formed water treating companies proliferated, especially in the Houston area. Most of them were short lived, seldom lasting for more than a year. An exception was Aquatrol, Inc., which not only lived but grew into a good sized company until it was absorbed by a hugeinternational corporation. The probalbe reason for its success was its' president, M.C. Forbes, who knew as much about water treatment as anybody around. When forming his company, he had to look for a place to establish his office, laboratory and compounding plant. The Houston Zoo had recently moved to a new location, so M.C. rented the old elephant house.
This led to the smart-aleck remark attributed to several sources -- 'I knew that all water treating compounds were horse manure but M.C. has topped the competition by using elephant manure!'Some years later, when the elephant house burned down, sympathizers said, 'poor old M.C. has lost the source of his raw material.'"
Words to ponder from maxey:The average man will use about 20 gallons of water while shaving. Which brings up an interesting point: Is shaving cream really meant to soften whiskers or is it just used to keep you from losing your place?Have you ever seen steam? I doubt it. Steam isinvisible as are most gases. What you see coming from the spoiut of a tea kettle, is a stream of minute water droplets that have condensed. If you look carefully, there is a small speace between the spout and the mist. That is steam. If it weren't for the last minute, nothing would ever get accomplished.
