When the angels went away from them to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go, then, to Bethlehemto see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.”So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known the messagethat had been told them about this child. All who heard it were amazedby what had been told them by the shepherds. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told to them.

-Luke 2: 15-20

Science FairThank you so much to all the 7th and 8th grade students for producing such wonderful science fair projects! Thank you parents for your support and assistance during this time! We couldn't have done it without our wonderful judges; Mrs. Keli Martinez, Mrs. Krista Imrie, Mr. Dennis Wong, Mr. Jim Zahradka, Mrs. Marilyn Domin, and Ms. Alana Seto. A big thank you to you all! Congratulations to our winners; 1st place - Erzsabet Gonzalez - Which Liquids have the Most Conductivity?1st place - Gabriel Magalong - Improving the Solar Light Bottle 2nd place - Eyoel Messay - Can Water Float on Water? 3rd place - Liam Towne - Does Aspirin Affect the Growth of Plants? 3rd place - Andrew & Patrick Ong - What Music Affects Bacteria Growth the Most? These six students and their projects will be advancing to the Diocesan Science Fair in February. We wish them all luck!  First of all, I want to thank Mrs. Higgins for inviting me to help judge the terrific poster exhibits of your 7th and 8th graders' science projects. I was blown away by the obvious time and effort these student scientists displayed in working on their projects. In addition to showing us how the scientific method can be applied to our daily lives and interests, the student scientists touched on a number of contemporary topics basic to our future health on Earth. The properties of water, effects of certain chemicals on our environment, and electricity as a source of energy are a few issues the student scientists have begun to think about. Kudos to your faculty for encouraging and supporting your talented young people to excel in Science. They are the future! Thanks again for the opportunity to learn.  -Jim Zahradka, (grandfather to Anthony ’18, Dominic ’20, & Christian ’23)Honor RollCongratulations to the following students who have earned Honors for the first trimester of the 2015-2016 school year:To be eligible for the Honors List a student in grades 6, 7 & 8 must earn a95% average in all six daily subjects: Religion, Math, English, Social Studies, Science, Literature and a 95% average in all four weekly subjects: Spanish, P.E., Art and Music on the trimester Report Card. New Year's Food Traditions

From Around the World!

Winter Camp for boys & girls, ages 6 - 13

Monday - Wednesday, Dec. 21, 22, 23

Hours: 9 am – 12 Noon

at the Marina Community Center

15301 Wicks Blvd., San Leandro

“What foods do people eat for New Year’s?”

Did you know that in Greece, a gold coin is hidden in the special New Year's Vasilopita

cake? This wild cherry cake is served on New Year's Day, first to the youngest person at the

table, and then everyone gets a slice. Whoever is served the hidden coin in their cake will have

good luck the entire year!

Cooking Round the World New Year's Food Traditions Winter Camp explores the many

varied and unusual international New Year's food traditions!

Each day we cook (and eat!) 3 different dishes, discover traditions, customs, and New

Year's celebrations from around the world. Activities include an international folk tale about a

New Year's tradition, and a daily slide show about an international New Year's celebration.

Fun, educational, and delicious!

To note: Camp size limited to 18 campers. Registration accepted on a first come/first

served basis. Cooking Round the World is a nut free company; there are no peanuts or tree-

nuts used in any recipe. For camp questions contact Director Mindy Myers at 510-593-5285.

Cost: $90 (residents of San Leandro) or $110 (non-San Leandro residents) plus a $30 materials

fee paid on the first day of camp.

Greatest Game Baseball Academy -Advanced Training for Youth to Stay In the Game-

FREE CLINICS!

“Baseball is the greatest game in the world and deserves the best you can give it.” - Babe Ruth Game Situations Advanced Fundamentals Proper Mechanics High School Preparation Leadership Field Drills The Greatest Game Baseball Academy (GGBA) provides advanced baseball training for primarily 11 – 13 year old boys who may not otherwise have access to elite skills clinics or travel ball teams. Its mission is to ensure that youth develop their baseball talent to stay in the game through high school and beyond. Players will receive upper instruction for hitting, fielding, base running, pitching, strategic thinking, competitive game situations, and more.

• Dates/Times: Four consecutive 3-hour Sunday clinics on January 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st 2016, from 12:30 pm - 3:30pm.

• Location: Bishop O’Dowd High School, 9500 Stearns Ave, Oakland. • Coaches: Bishop O’Dowd baseball players supported by high school and

travel ball coaches will provide a high coach to player ratio. • No Cost: The program is free to the first 25 players who register. Each

boy receives a cap and game-shirt compliments of West Coast Sports. • Registration: Email the candidate’s name, age, grade, and parent

contact information to [email protected], with a sentence describing the player’s prior baseball experience. All skill levels welcome and a commitment to all 4 clinics desired. Space is limited. Sign up today and get ready to play ball!

The Story Behind GGBA -- After learning that only 8% of youth baseball players play in high school due in part to inaccessibility of advanced training, Tyler Manca (O’Dowd ’18, Corpus Christi ’14) was motivated to give back to the game by providing free clinics so more youth could stay in the game. With the help of fellow Bishop O’Dowd players, past and current coaches, and strong community

support, GGBA was born. GGBA thanks all who have donated generous time, funds, gear, facilities, and expertise to ensure a successful and satisfying experience for all.
