The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released the final rule as part of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA) that will become effective July 1, 2012. The goal of the final rule is to promote overall student wellness and to assist in decreasing the inci- dence of childhood obesity, as well as hunger. St Johns County Nutrition Services Department has developed new menus in order to meet the new dietary guidelines for school age children, in addition to meeting the goals of the HHKFA. Some of the changes you will see in your menu include: A choice of fat-free or 1% white or chocolate milk. An increase in portion sizes for vegetables: Kindergarten – 5th grade: ¾ cup per day Weekly offerings of vegetables must come from different vegetable sub-groups: Dark Green, Red / Orange, Beans / Peas and Starches Fruit offerings will come from a variety of canned (in juice) and fresh items: Kindergarten through 5th grade: ½ cup per day Students are REQUIRED to take a minimum of ½ cup fruit OR vegetable. This information is requested of par- ents at the beginning of the school year. Your child’s teacher will abide by the information that was given by the parents, unless he/she receives a change in writing. It is very important that parents get in the habit of sending the teacher a note in the morning should your child’s transportation need to be changed for that particular day. These notes need to be very specific and include your child’s name, the mode of transportation, bus number or day care bus information, if applicable, and the date or dates this change involves. Teachers cannot accept a verbal change in transportation from your child. This information must be in writing from the parent only. Should the need arise to make a change in your child’s transportation during the day, please call the office at 547-8540. We ask that all changes be received by 2:15 (1:15 on Wednesdays). This allows us time to be sure that all teachers are notified of dismissal changes in plenty of time to notify your child. Principal’s Corner Dear Ketterlinus Family, The students are doing a fantastic job in learning our school-wide rules, expecta- tions and procedures. SWIM is the school-wide motto for students to follow. S – Safe W – Well Mannered I – Incredibly Respectful M – Make wise decisions… with the best! I’m very proud of our students by displaying such great character both in school and out of school. KES students are wonderful! I’m looking forward to our Character Counts! Celebration next month. Once again, I want to thank our parents for following the drop-off and pickup proce- dures. I would like to strongly encourage you to have your child ride the bus if possi- ble. All drivers and passengers should remain in the car and allow students to enter the cars with assistance (if needed) from the staff. By doing this, it keeps the line moving in a timely manner and prevents delays and backups on the main road(s). Younger students should be able to buckle themselves into their seatbelts or booster seats. Please have your child practice this important self-help skill. I would like to announce a staff retirement. Coach Toni Kellerman will be retiring from Ketterlinus on September 28 th . Coach Kellerman has been teaching at Ketterli- nus for 22 years, but would like to spend more time with her mother and grandchil- dren. Coach has developed a top notch physical education program, which I believe to the best in the district. My nineteen year old son still talks about her classes from his days at Ketterlinus. Coach provided not only taught healthy life skills and char- acter, but gave our students some great memories. We will miss her, but will enjoy the last few weeks reminiscing of old times with Coach. We will welcome Mrs. Pam Allen as our new PE Coach. Mrs. Allen is formerly of Mill Creek Elementary School and Swiss Point Middle School. She will spend some time with Coach Kellerman and see our PE program in action. Please provide a warm welcome to Mrs. Allen. She will officially start on October 1 st . We will begin having our Open House programs in the next few weeks. Grades 3, 4 & 5 Open House will be on September 17 th at 6pm. Parents of students in Grades 3, 4 & 5 will have the opportunity to sign up for Home Access Center (HAC) from 5pm – 6pm. HAC is a new tool to monitor your child’s academic progress. HAC is a web- based applicaon that is part of our new Student Informaon system called eSchool- Plus. Grades K, 1 & 2 Open House will be on September 24 th at 6pm. Please look for additional information on Open House in upcoming newsletters. This is an oppor- tunity for parents to hear more about our transition to Common Core State Standards (CCSS), district and school Be proud of your child(ren) . They are doing an outstanding job!
