In the years since, the idea of diversity in Rotary has come to be defined more broadly. We have discovered that a club that truly represents its community is far better able to serve that community effectively. Looking ahead, it is clear how essential diversity will remain in Rotary: not only to strong service today, but to a strong organization in the future. Whatever brought each of us to Rotary, we stay because we find value in Rotary membership and believe that our service has value to the world. By building clubs that reflect that world in all its diversity, we will build even more enduring value in Rotary: Making a Difference. And the New Year Message from Paul Harris in 1916: I wish you all of the prosperity which your good deeds merit. May all things you ought have be yours. May your charities rank among your necessary expenditures. May you not fall into the popular error of thinking that happiness is to be found in outdoing your neighbors. May it always be yours to look beneath the veneer of life to the solid substance which lies beneath. May you be builders, not mere climbers. May you be able to appraise life's blessings at their real worth. May you be free to act in accordance with the dictates of your own conscience and good judgment. May you not be slaves to meaningless customs, social or otherwise. May you shun the groove followers. May you have vision to discern the right and health, strength and will to do it. THAT IS TO SAY, I wish you a happy New Year." https://www.rghfhome.org/harris/rotarian/1916future.htm

    MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Dear Fellow Rotarians & Friends, Today the Rotary Club of Essendon met for the first time in 2018. A day to come together to talk about the heat of Summer as we hot up for a fantastic year ahead. I thought to start the year off I would take this opportunity to share with you an excerpt of President Ian Riseley’s message to all Members this month. • This year we will work together to make changes to the way we do things at Rotary to encourage diversity & to have vision for the future. In May we will launch a book celebrating all the wonderful things the Rotary Club of Essendon have achieved together since 1935. That is this Club’s History & Rotarians & our Community are proud to look back at that & celebrate. Starting now however we need to write another chapter about how we are paving the way for a bright future for the Rotary Club of Essendon & working with all Rotary Clubs in our area & beyond to achieve much together. We need to Inspire the next Generation to join us! Enjoy the year ahead & please consider the following quote: "Perhaps the secret of living well is not having all the answers but in pursuing unanswerable questions in good company" (Rachel Naomi Remen)….That is Rotary!!! Kind Regards President Jenny PS See you all at the end of February as I need to travel to Europe for a few weeks. My computer will travel with me so please contact me at anytime however please be patient for responses. President Jenny also reminded members of the Foundation dinner on Tuesday 20th April, Charter night, Wishing well cleared

with approx. $900, MV Festival volunteers required Sun 25th Feb and the Art Show.

    Announcements

  • Money Laundering??? The Essendon Rotary Club is now in the Laundering Business - MONEY LAUNDERING !!! Two buckets of soiled coinage collected by the Moonee Valley City Council from the Rotary Wishing Well in Queens Park, required extensive remedial work before depositing with our Banker’s. As it was, the coins $2, $1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c and various other foreign offerings were covered in mud and debris as well as being severely tarnished - not really presentable legal tender. To the rescue, the Community Committee developed a master plan for money laundering. First, the coinage was washed in a dog bath to remove most of the debris. Then with brilliant insight our resourceful engineer Lino used his bargain cement mixer to remove most of the tarnish with a special mixture of pebbles, detergent, lemon zest cleaner and finally Cocoa Cola and water - 1.5 hour cycles - the brown frothy grime released had to be seen to believe. Several rinses later the coins were separated from the stones in a specially devised fencing sieve but time had run out to dry them, so back they went into the buckets. A well-earned meal by Lena of delicious prawns and wine finished off a perfect idyllic Sunday. Next day a further soak with Cocoa Cola, rinsing and drying on a towel and the loot was separated by denomination. Although clean and presentable, there was still residual tarnishing but quite acceptable for the Bendigo Bank to accept. All in all with 15 hours dedicated work, a cement mixer and various supplies, the club has netted $xxxxx. Can’t reveal the exact amount as after all - it is MONEY LAUNDERING.

Grateful thanks to all who contributed.

  • The coolest Grandma in Rotary

Jenny Mann and Peter Mifsud’s daughter and son’s wife had babies one week apart, Winifred 17th Jan and Zoe 23rd

Jan. Congratulations to all, you got your work cut out Jenny looking after the little cuties.

Lino’s restoration work on the original

The Emblem was found badly smashed at Anglers Hotel.

Morris Mollica wanted to have a new one done.

Lino decided to take the Emblem home and proceeded to

restore it to the best of his ability.

It is the original Emblem and it would been a pity to have a

    new one done.

It is history and nothing else would been able to replace it.

It looks great now and on show

    Fantastic work Lino!!

  • Elise Foster is part of the Australian Ballet Company and proud mum President Jenny will be accompanying Elise

overseas for one month, good luck and all the best.
