MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
Dear Fellow Rotarians & Friends Welcome to the New Year! I hope that everyone is enjoying a relaxing start to what I hope will be an exciting year ahead. Rotary Club of Essendon…..Year of Action! Can we do that…yes we can! Next Tuesday, 23 January, we will gather together for the first official lunch-time meeting of the year. This will be a time of fellowship but also a time of talking about what the Club has planned for this year. Please join us to talk together, share ideas together & work out how we can all together make a Difference in 2018. May I encourage you all to take a moment to read the following article written by Paul A Netzel – Foundation Trustee Chair. It will certainly make you proud that you call yourselves Rotarians or are our Friends to help us achieve all that we do. https://rotarynewsonline.org/we-are-people-of-action/ We have lots to look forward to this year, including but not limited to: The Moonee Valley Festival, Moonee Valley Art Show (need lots & lots of Volunteers to make this event a huge success for our Community…Friends of Rotary please let us know if you can also assist), District Conference, Relay For Life with Brumby Babes, Foundation Dinner (please note date change from 20 Feb to Tuesday, 10 April), Charter Night & the launch of the Rotary Club of Essendon’s History Book together with lots of excellent guest speakers & fantastic work continuing at Donations In Kind, Strathmore Men’s Shed & Days For Girls. Be Excited…it’s a great time to be a member of the Rotary Club of Essendon. Invite family & friends to join us…they will thank you for giving them the opportunity to help our local community & the world together. Have a happy, healthy & fun-filled year ahead. Kind Regards President Jenny

Last night 12 Rotary Club of Essendon members & partners joined with the members of the Rotary Club of Keilor East for a
night of fellowship at the Moonee Valley Legends Bistro. It was a lovely night for eating out with wonderful views of the city
skyline over the Moonee Valley Racecourse. PP Lisa passed a vote of thanks to the RCKeilor East for arranging the joint meeting.
We return to Angler’s next week for our regular lunch time meeting.
Thoughts to keep in mind
Another year has started and we will no doubt have happy and joyful moments and pleasant
surprises, but we will also have sad and unpleasant moments and times. Through it all we journey
through life.
Some will find it hard to get through the hard times and the disappointments but get through we
must.
Life is a journey and as we travel along beautiful roads with lovely scenery, we also have to
endure bad weather and bumpy roads, the one thing we need to do is to keep the vehicle in good
trim!
Keep healthy and look after yourself during the year for if not your health what have you got?
23 – 25 MARCH 2018
SPONSORS – CAN YOU HELP?
The Art Show committee has decided that for the 2018 show 5 prizes will be awarded. These will be
the previous four awards, best in Show, Best Oil / Acrylic, Best Watercolour, Best Pastel or Drawing,
and a new Best Youth Artist (under 25) award to encourage local young artists to enter, and to bring
their families along to the Art Show.
We would love to increase the value of our 5 prizes. This will help attract new entrants, continue to
improve the quality of the art for sale, and bring more people through the gate. To do this the
committee is currently focused on increasing the number of sponsors. We are particularly keen to
increase monetary sponsors, rather than in-kind. If you or anyone you know might be a potential
sponsor, the Art Show committee members would love to hear from you.
We have also recently commenced a facebook campaign. At the moment there are occasional posts,
but in January these will become much more frequent. If you use Facebook we would appreciate if
could you please search for the Moonee Valley Art Show (MVAS) Facebook page, and like and share
any posts you see. The more we can market the Art Show, the more attendance we will get, and the
more money we will raise for our projects.
VOLUNTEERS
Later on we will also be looking for volunteers to help out at the Show. So please have a think about
how you might be able to contribute some of your time.
FUNDS
As per last year, funds raised from the Art Show will be allocated to the club's general
projects fund for the Board to use as it sees fit. So please get behind this major local
community event.
QUESTIONS?
Don't hesitate to ask Veronica O'Sullivan, Steve Chandler or Grant Sheldon.
Help yourself and help the Club by banking with Strathmore Community Bank. For example, take out a home loan
and the club will receive up to $500. Take out a 3 month fixed term deposit and the club will receive up to $50.
For more details drop into the branch at 337 Napier St or call branch Manager David Porter on 9374-2607.
