What’s Up?

Conrad’s Corner

For your tween to take personal responsibility, it’s important that he/she

take ownership of his/her actions. Help your middle schooler learn this

valuable lesson with the following tips for handling common excuses.

Admit Mistakes: It's typical for kids this age to immediately deny wrongdo-

ing. (“Who left the front door open?” “Well, I didn't!”) The reason is to keep

from getting into trouble and to possibly protect their pride. Your middle

schooler will be more willing to admit mistakes if you don’t overreact when

he/she does confess. Instead, use a neutral tone and give a gentle reminder for

the minor offenses. (“Let’s all try to keep the front door closed when the air is

on.”)

Avoid Excuses: Does your tween have an excuse for everything? Maybe he

didn’t get a permission slip signed and says, “You weren't home when I had it

out.” Make it clear it’s their responsibility to find a way to get things taken

care of. Discuss what they could have done, such as leaving the form on the

kitchen counter with a note or putting a reminder in their phone to get it

signed.

Accept Blame: If your child is in the hot seat, he/she may be quick to blame

others. Maybe they didn't perform well on an assessment and he/she says

their friend kept goofing off during study time. Take time to explain that

blaming others doesn’t solve the problem and that preparing for the test was

up to them, not anyone else. Brainstorm what your child can do next time

Students at MJH are recognized and

rewarded for doing honorable deeds!

Every month, students will be recognized

for good character. Students will have a

catered luncheon with the principal and

counselor in The Social House. A group

picture of these “Kids of Character” will

be taken and displayed in our showcase. I

am very proud of each and every one of

Responsibility

Life Is Better When You’re Laughing!

The Mabank Jr. High Archery Team competed in Belton, TX at the NASP Texas State Championship. There were over 2,500 participants from all over the state of Texas that competed in the event. The Jr High competes in the middle school division which had 34 teams in it. Our team this year consisted of the top 20 archers in the school, who have been practicing very hard to get to this level. When the results came in, it was apparent that all their hard work had paid off. The team finished 11th in state out of the 34 teams and only 260 pts out of 1st place which is a very small margin. Cash Teague was the top archer on the boys side with a score of 278 out of 300. That placed him at 7th in the state out of 436 middle school boys competing and he is currently ranked as the #1 7th grader male archer in the state! Hannah Harris was the top score on the girls side with a score of 269 out of 300. That ranked Hannah as #30 in the state for middle school girls. Overall, the team shot a score of 3,079 which is the highest score they have ever shot and on the biggest stage. Because of their hard work and exceptional performance, they have qualified to compete in the NASP National Championship in Louisville, Kentucky May 11-13th. Congratulations to all who competed and GOOD LUCK at Nationals!!

Responsibility is “taking owner-ship of your thoughts, words, and actions.” This trait is essen-tial for becoming a healthy, happy, and productive person…and it is the basis for a free and civil society where each person does what he or she is expected to do. Responsibility begins with “little things” like taking care of your belongings, working with a good attitude, resolving con-flicts peacefully, and owning up to mistakes. Taking responsibility in these “little things” prepares students for greater opportuni-ties in the future!
