Over the last few years under the skillful leadership of past presidents Larry Salter and Tim Katona we have done a remarkable job of recruiting new members and Community Affiliates. It is now incumbent on us to retain these members and grow our Council. With that in mind, we are trying new things to enhance member interest. We are looking into the possibility of some dinner meetings like our January Installation Dinner and our joint February meeting with the Navy Submarine League. Other ideas that have been put forth include a summer picnic, a cruise around Bainbridge Island, Happy Hours, etc. If you have any creative ideas to generate member interest please contact me or another of the Board Members. We are actively engaged in providing judges and scholarships to the Washington State Science and Engineering Fair (the state finals are at Bremerton High School March 31 and April 1). Plans are actively in progress for our participation in Bremerton's Armed Forces Festival May 15-20 and our Memorial Day Ceremony on the USS Turner Joy May 29. The commissioning of the USS Washington (SSN-787) has been postponed until this Summer. In the mean time, the Comissioning Committee is seeking donations for a Scholarship Fund.

March 14 Luncheon and Meeting

There was quite a crowd in attendance to hear our featured speaker, CAPT Robert Gaucher, Commander, Submarine Development Squadron FIVE. The large attendance was in part because it was a joint meeting with The Submarine Association. In addition to the large contingent of Naval Submarine Association members, many of whom are also Navy League members, Adm Tammen, SubGroup 9, Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent, Bremerton City Councilmen Richard Huddy & Greg Wheeler, Kitsap County Sheriff Gary Simpson and Seattle NL Council President Jeff Davis and Radm Michael Sharp representing the USS Washington commissioning committee.

CAPT Gaucher's talk centered in Unmanned Underwater Vehicles. I dare say it was both fascinating and thought provoking. Additionally, we honored four Sub Group 9 2016 Sailors of the Year; IT1(EXW/SW/IDW) Nicholas Stenftenagel, Shore Sailor of the Year, STG1(SW/IUSS) Beth Mele, Sea Sailor of the Year, STG2(SW) Kegan Dyer, Junior Sea Sailor of the Year, and PCS2(SS) Bradley White, Junior Shore Sailor of the year,

Navy League Tour of the Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific (SWFPAC)

Navy League Tour - Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific (SWFPAC)

The Navy League, Bremerton - Olympic Peninsula Council toured SWFPAC on February 15th, hosted by CAPT Mike Elmstrom (SWFPAC CO).First stop was a tour of Missile Assembly Building #3 (MAB-3) where Lockheed Martin, the prime contractor for missile processing operations, briefed the group on the Trident II missile and the SWFPAC missile processing flow from component receipt to missile outload on SSBNs.

Next up was a static display of two security force armored vehicles hosted by the Marine Corps Security Force Battalion, an essential member of "Team SWFPAC."

Following the static display, the group was treated to a tasty lunch at the Bangor Galley with choices from a wide range of menu items.

After lunch, the tour group proceeded to the USS Henry M. Jackson (SSBN 730) hosted by LCDR Mike Smith, Subgroup 9 PAO. The tour group was split up into three groups to facilitate movement within the submarine. Spaces visited included the Control Room, Missile Compartment and Crew Berthing Spaces just to name a few areas. Our tour guides briefed us thoroughly on operations in each space. Many thanks to out to the crew for accommodating the Navy League tour.

This tour was arranged by Navy League member and tour organizer Byron Faber. We are extremely grateful to CAPT Elmstrom for the opportunity to tour SWFPAC and LCDR Smith tor coordinating a fantastic submarine tour.

Military Appreciation Day, an annual event organized by the Silverdale Chamber of Commerce's Military Affairs Committee, is the region's biggest expression of community support for the military. The day features more than 100 organizations; fun, games and entertainment for children; and services and resources for active duty and retired military people and families. Our Council participates in this event as does the Scorpion Squadron of Sea Scouts.

As a part of the event, the North Kitsap Daily News published a very complimentary and very informative article on the our Navy League Council. You can find it at:www.kitsapdailynews.com/news/kitsap-military-appreciation-day-bremerton-navy-league-supports-area-military/

Seabee75th Anniversary Celebration

On Saturday March 4th Navy League members joined members of the Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) for a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Seabees. From 1942 members of the Seabees have been part of the US Navy and an important part of the CEC. The guest speaker was Mrs Joan Shields-Bennett, Widow of Marvin Glenn Shields, who was killed in action in June of 1965. Marvin Glenn Shields was killed in action in Viet Nam and the only Seebee ever awarded the Metal of Honor. In September of 1966 Mrs Shields was presented the Metal of Honor by President Lynden Johnson on behalf of her husband. Her talk brought back memories of some in the audience and admiration from all. The formal portion over, music was the order of the evening for dancing and casual talk. It was an enjoyable evening for all.
