Did you know …
There are currently more than one
million colon cancer survivors in the
United States.
Small Step
Try one of these recipes to “Enjoy the
Taste of Eating Right”.
Welcome!
March is National Nutrition Month and Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. How will you
observe? The theme for this year’s National Nutrition Month is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right” and
encourages us to try new foods and re-create some of our favorite restaurant meals in our own
kitchens. Nothing says eating healthy can’t taste delicious! Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
reminds us that screenings save lives. Regular screenings are recommended for all men and
women age 50 and older. Some of us may need to be screened at a younger age due to family
history and other risk factors. If screening guidelines are followed, as many as 30,000 lives could be
saved each year.
Both of these remind us of ways we can take control of our own health. I hope you will find ways to
celebrate these national observances in your own life. After all, “The first wealth is health”, as Ralph
Waldo Emerson stated.
Sincerely,
Nicole

Action for Healthy Kids has three School Grants for Healthy Kids opportunities
for the 2014-2015 school year. Around 1,000 schools will be awarded funds
ranging from $500 to $5,000 to support school breakfast and physical activity
programs. Funded schools will also receive expertise and people power to help
implement a successful project that leads to sustainable change.
What schools need to know to apply:
Interested schools are invited to attend a webinar to learn more about the available grant
opportunities for 2014-2015 and receive tips for applying.
Thursday, March 20, 2014 – 3:00-4:00pm ET – REGISTER NOW! NOTE: The archived webinar will be available here.
The following grants are available in Ohio:
1. School breakfast program pilot and/or expansion – To include alternative breakfast programs
(i.e., breakfast in the classroom, grab and go breakfast, breakfast after 1st period, breakfast on
the school bus) and universal breakfast programs. Average grant size is $1,400 per school.
2. Universal School Breakfast Pilot – Provides funding to pilot a universal alternative breakfast
program in 2-3 schools in a district such that successes can be expanded to multiple schools
within the district over three school years. Grant size is $2,000 - $2,500 with potential for future
funding to other district schools. (NOTE: Schools must participate in the National School Lunch
Program and National School Breakfast Program; and must have a free/reduced priced meal
eligibility greater than 60% to be eligible).
3. Physical Activity – Provides funding for facilities and equipment for recess, playgrounds/play-
spaces, classroom energizers, physical education, intramural and/or before/after-school
programs that introduce underserved youth populations to the value of an active
lifestyle. Grant size range from $500 to $5,000 with most schools receiving $1,000. (Note: Schools
with greater than 50% of students eligible for free/reduced priced meals may receive priority,
but all schools are encouraged to apply.)

Are you looking for new skills to start or improve an employee wellness program? The CDC has a
new training resource for you! A healthy workforce helps a business stay productive and
competitive, but how does an employer build or revamp a customized wellness program?
Find out through Work@HealthTM, a new initiative that offers employers FREE training sessions,
follow-up consultations and up to $5,000 in seed funding. Work@HealthTM is part of an effort by
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and ASHLIN Management Group to
promote health awareness in the workplace. The training is conducted by professional coaches
and draws on the research of leading scholars and scientists.
Each Work@HealthTM participant receives a professional evaluation of the health of their
organization’s workforce. Coaches will help each business create a tailor-made plan for
addressing its needs and will remain available for consultation after the training is complete and
employers are implementing the programs. Networking with peers is another benefit of the
program and participants are encouraged to share their experiences and best practices.
There are two basic ways to get involved with Work@HealthTM: employer training and train-the-
trainer workshops.
The employer curriculum provides training to build, expand, and improve health promotion
strategies to reduce chronic disease rates in the workplace. The train-the-trainer program – a
good option for health departments, nonprofits, and trade associations – provides qualified
individuals with the skills and knowledge they need to train other employers and organizations in
the Work@HealthTM curriculum.
Space is limited, so sign up now for online training or a seat at one of four regional trainings in:
Atlanta, GA, Baltimore, MD, Chicago, IL, and Oakland, CA. Training begins in early 2014 and
continues throughout the year with technical support and consultation forums.
Registration information is under the “Get Involved” link on the Work@HealthTM website at
www.cdc.gov/workathealth. You can also contact Hugh Bailey at [email protected]
for more information. Once you register, the Work@HealthTM team will provide details regarding
the application process and training dates. The program is open to businesses of any size across
the United States.

Share the Love! Suicide is something that is so misunderstood in our society. People say things like, “How could
he/she have chosen that path?”, “Didn’t he/she think about those left behind?”, “Wasn’t there
a better option?” What people don’t realize is that suicide isn’t attempted by any one
demographic, gender or ethnicity – it’s an equal opportunity result of mental illness. When
people attempt suicide, they are rarely in a mentally healthy place where they are making the
best choices.
Did you know that Steven Holcomb, the driver of the U.S.
men’s 2-man and 4-man bobsleds at the 2014 Olympics,
became depressed and considered suicide back in 2007
when he was diagnosed with an eyesight threatening
disease? When he awoke from his attempted suicide and
realized what he had done, he knew he needed help and
got some. He finally received medical care that reversed his
blindness and he was able to continue on his journey as a
world class athlete. As mentioned before, mental illness
doesn’t discriminate – anyone can be susceptible to its
reach.
Mental Health America wants to educate Licking County about the signs of suicide. Suicide
Prevention classes are taught at the middle school, high school and college level. Our
Gatekeeper Training teaches signs of suicide to workplaces so that staff will know what to look
like within the ranks of their coworkers. Several organizations and businesses have scheduled
staff sessions that combine Gatekeeper Training with the tools needed to handle customers
who arrive at their places of business with obvious mental health issues. Mental Health America
also offers support groups open to anyone living with a mental illness to help bolster their
support system so they can identify someone to call on when times get rough.
Special event Share the Love, Mental Health
America’s annual Suicide Prevention Awareness
Night, took place on Friday, February 21 at
Newark High School. What an uplifting, eye
opening evening! In its third year, over 100 high
school students from all over Licking County
gathered to reach out to their friends and
families via social media, telling them they are
cared for, and sharing suicide prevention
resources including the 2-1-1 Crisis Hotline phone number. Judging from the responses received
by students, Share the Love made a difference in many lives.
