FROM THE DESK OF THE COMMANDER: Cdr Shari Marshall, AP
Happy New Year!
On behalf of the Banana River Sail &
Power Squadron, I would like to wish you
all a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
The year 2018 saw many exciting events
within the Squadron, and it is hoped that
2019 will be even better.
A few community events to mark on
your calendar are Samsons Island Open
House on Feb. 16, the Eau Gallie Boat
Ramp Clean-up on May 18, holiday Toys
for Tots Drive in December, and the
Christmas Boat Parade will be on Dec.
14.
Squadron social events will include but
not limited to the Flare-Up, Corn Roast,
Navigation Challenge, Satellite Beach
Founder’s Day, Ocean Reef Festival, and
our annual Holiday Party.
Do not forget our monthly Membership
Meetings with 8 featured guest speakers.
The Jan, Feb, and March meetings will be
held at Cocoa Beach Squid Lips. If any-
one has a suggestion for a meeting room
that is large enough and relatively
inexpensive, has AV equipment, and is
located closer to the intersection of Eau
Gallie and US 1 (center point of member-
ship addresses), please let a Bridge officer
know.
Please see SEO Jim Merker’s account of
educational offerings for 2019.
District 23 offers a
Winter Council
Meeting, Spring and Fall
Conference, annual
Picnic, and interaction
at the USPS Annual
Meeting. Plan on
attending some of these activities; a great
place to meet new friends, learn about
USPS and District governance, and enjoy
wonderful food!
Your Bridge is dedicated to bringing you a
variety of events and activities which will
increase your knowledge base and be
FUN. Many of you have said you want a
variety of social, on-the-water, and educa-
tional offerings. We want to bring these
opportunities to you.
That said, your Bridge needs “more hands
on deck”! No one should have to plan,
setup, and execute an entire function. It
is so much more efficient and effective to
have at least 3 members involved. Please
consider an event or function you would
like to volunteer for. You WILL have help.
Lastly, think about someone you know or
work with who has a boat, is thinking
about buying a boat, or wants to learn
more about boating. What would it take
to invite him/her to a meeting, get signed
up for ABC3, or come join us as a guest? The more active members in BRSPS, the
more it can hope to meet our 2019 New
Year’s Resolutions!!

DRAGON TALES
An Engine Teardown Workshop will be
held starting Saturday anuary 5 and run
every Saturday for 3 weeks from 10am to
1pm.
We will disassemble and try to diagnose
what is wrong with a 70hp 4-stroke out-
board that began adding water to its oil
supply.
If we can fix it, great. If not, then we will
continue to tear it down until we have had
a chance to see all the inner workings.
Please let me know if you are interested
and available to come and play…
I mean learn…with me.
Remember, we do not just offer boating education –
we provide superior boating education!
Check our website www.bananariversps.org for more information.
Six students took
the Weather Course
exam, and 4 passed.
Congratulations!
Instructor Certifi-
cation/Recertification
will be held mid February.
ABC3 and JrBB will be taught in
March. See Page 3 and 15 for more
details.
Boat Handling (Seamanship) will begin
the end of April. Time and place will
be advertised in February Dragon
Tales.
Cocoa Beach SPS will be teaching
Piloting and Electronic Navigation
starting in January. We will promote
their educational offerings and share
our course schedule with them as
well.

FROM THE SQUADRON MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN: P/D/C Bob Becker, SN
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Yes its 2019! Its winter, a bit colder and we will all be a bit older this year. I hope Santa
brought you what you asked him for. I got my usual supply of underwear and ties.
Missed out again on the 36 ft SeaRay, but there is always next year.
Resolutions, resolutions, resolutions. Did you make any? Did you write them down?
Did you already erase one or more of them? As mentioned in my December Member-
ship column, I hope that you include the following resolutions for BRS&PS in your 2019 items:
Bring in at least one new member
Attend squadron functions
Support our squadron officers
As far as new members go, let’s hit the 100 membership mark during 2019. We seem to be stuck around
60 members. If each one of us could bring in one new member we would be at the 100+ mark. The “life-
blood” of any organization is its MEMBERSHIP. Several of our members own boats and in speaking to
your fellow boaters why not explain what out BRS&PS (America’s Boating Club) is all about. In addition
we have a ton of USPS member benefits.
Attend squadron functions. Start off by attending the monthly general membership meetings. We usually
have a guest speaker, a short business meeting and plenty of time to socialize. Get to know your fellow
squadronites. This is the place to bring your boating problems. With years of boating experience there
are members who can usually assist you with your problem or at least point you in the right direction.
Another important item is education. Our squadron can offer you any and all of the USPS Educational
Courses. Many of these courses have already or are about to be re-written. All you have to do is speak
to P/C Jim Merker our SEO about which course you want to take. Some of the USPS courses are or
soon will be available on the internet. You won’t even have to leave the comfort of your home!
And don’t forget that we have at-large members sitting on the executive committee. If you have any new
ideas or old ideas that are not active, get in touch with one of them to see about advancing your idea(s).
These at-large members are listed in our monthly squadron publication.
February finds the USPS yearly meeting again being held in our back door…Orlando. If you have never
attended one of these meetings this might be the right time to attend. You don’t have to get a hotel
room as you can drive there. The meeting info is in the USPS Ensign magazine. It is a great opportunity to
see and hear the workings of our great organization. If you are interested please speak to our sqdn com-
mander who will be attending along with several of our members.
Wishing you and yours a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year.
