It is with great pleasure that we introduce our new princi-pal, Mr. Saperstein. He en-joys being a principal because he loves children and wants to “give them a better future”. Mr. Saperstein hopes for a productive year where every student does well. Prior to working here, Mr. Saperstein worked at Virginia A. After the county had become aware of his interest, he was trans-ferred over. He was ecstatic to receive the news as he had wanted this to happen. During this year, Mr. Saperstein plans

Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September

15th to October 15th when people recognize the contri-butions of Hispanic and Lati-

no Americans to the Hispan-ic culture. On October

13th, grades kindergarten dressed up as a Hispanic

rate activities based on dif-ferent Hispanic cultures. The staff had a luncheon that

included different Latin foods which they brought in

Rivero, “Hispanic culture affects our school in a big

way because we have a large community of Hispan-

ics.” Also, Ms. Cox stated “Hispanics have helped the U.S in all the areas of art,

music, and more.” Another short statement quoted by

Ms. Cox would be “In Bay Harbor Islands, all cultures

Cooking with Carpenter

Ms. Carpenter and her Culinary Arts class made a delicious pesto pasta on October 6th. They made pesto from scratch. The students in her class had a fun time helping Ms. Car-penter prepare and actually cook the meal. Ms. Car-penter made two pastas, one with and one without cheese. Students observed how to make this amazing meal. The ingredients to

some people get it faster, other have more difficulties, but with determination you will get through it. To become a better speaker of the language, you could try watching TV, reading books and talking to people all in English. Just keep trying and don’t give up!

What should I do when people don’t like the way I look?

First of all, we understand that a lot of people go through situations like that, specially in school, so don't worry because you aren’t the only one. However, don't listen to them, we know it is

not easy but don't let other people bring you down. If you don't feel comfortable with the way you look, then change for yourself and not for others. Don't focus on negative comments people say because there’s always going to be someone to judge you. Who-ever is making you feel this way, is not worth listening to. Try to find someone who appreciates you for who you are, not the way you look. At the end of the day you are who you want to be, not who the others want you to be.

Walk to School day was Wednesday, October 4th. It was hosted to promote physical activ-ity, save energy, and reduce air pollution. The more people that participated in this activity, the cleaner the Earth is!

The annual Scholastics Book Fair will be taking place October 16th through Octo-ber 20th. Make sure to stop by the Media Center/Library to purchase some books. There will be books of all genres and grade levels, so anyone can come!

Dear Camila

I need help! English has been really hard for me and I don’t know what to do. Any advice? How many months will it take?

Well, learning a new language is never easy but you should take it on your own pace. Asking for help is essential, especially in school. You should talk to someone that speaks your own language, howev-er do not rely on them, they aren’t always going to be there. Make sure they are giving you the help you’ll need in the future, not just now. For example: instead of trans-lating a question, try to explain in a simpler way in English. There isn’t a certain amount of time to learn,

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND came out in 1977. That’s 27 years before I was born. So what’s it doing back in theaters? That’s simple. The CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND 40th anniver-sary re-release is a sight for sore eyes. It’s one of the few truly original alien movies, and surprisingly a breath of fresh air in today’s tired genre. The movie follows 3 subplots, all regarding some mysterious aliens that come to earth one fateful night. There’s Richard Dreyfuss, who almost gets abducted by the aliens, the research-ers, who simply want to find out what it is and why, and Teri Garr, who along with her toddler son tries to tough it all out. The plot is less important, instead being a showcase for the amazing characters and atmosphere. Oh, the atmosphere. I could talk for hours about the musical tones that provide a good leitmotif for the movie itself, or the recurring themes of art as a medium and using it to better your-self. But instead, I’ll just say go watch this movie. In a theater, on Netflix, on DVD, anywhere. I give it 5 “this is important” quotes out of 5 “this means something” quotes.

The Nintendo World Championship is a compe-tition held every couple of years where all the best Nintendo game players play Nintendo games for a prize. There are tryouts around the country includ-ing one in a ‘Best Buy’ store located in Miami. However, when the news struck that Hurricane Irma was going to impact Mi-ami, the Nintendo compa-ny put out a press state-ment saying they would reschedule these tryouts.

But a new problem devel-oped when recently, Ninten-do released a second press statement saying that the tryouts will not be located in Florida, and instead in Seat-tle. This has angered many students, some have whom even bought Nintendo prod-ucts in order to pre-pare. Nintendo has said that their next competition, set to be in 2018 or 2019, will definitely include Florida.
