Diarrhoea - Why children are still dying andwhat can be done: UNICEF and WHOlaunch
report on the second greatest killerof children
DIARRHOEA AMONG CHILDREN
Despite the existence of inexpensive and efficient meansof treatment, diarrhoea kills more children than AIDS,malaria and measles combined, according to a reportissued by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The report, titled: "Diarrhoea: Why Chi Idren Are Sti11Dying and What Can Be Done," includes informationon the causes of diarrhoea, data on access to meansof prevention and treatment, and a seven-point plan toreduce diarrhea deaths. It is a tragedy that diarrhoea, which is little more than an inconvenience in thedeveloped world, kills an estimated 1.5 million childreneach year," said UNICEF Executive Director, Ann M.Veneman. "Inexpensive and effective treatments fordiarrhoea exist, but in developing countries only39 percent of children with diarrhea received therecommended treatment."
Or. Margaret Chan, Di rector-General of WHO said: "Weknow where children are dying of diarrhoea. We knowwhat must be done to prevent those deaths. We mustwork with governments and partners to put this seven-point plan into action."
Diarrhoea is a common symptom of gastrointentinalinfection, which can have a variety of sources. However, just a handful of organisms are responsible for most acutecases of diarrhoea and one, Rotavi rus, is responsible formore than 40 percent of all diarrhoea- related hospitaladmissions of children under five. A new vaccine forRotavirus has been found to be safe and effective but isstill largely unavailable in most developing countries.
Though most episodes of childhood diarrhoea aremild, acute cases can lead to significant fluid loss anddehydration. This dehydration can lead to death unless
fl uids are quickly replaced. Oral rehydration therapy isthe cornerstone of fluid replacement and the new low-osmolarity formula of oral rehydration salts (ORS) is asimple, inexpensive and life-saving remedy that preventsdehydration in children suffering diarrhoea.
Some 88 percent of diarrhoeal deaths worldwide areattributable to unsafe water, inadequate sanitation andpoor hygiene.
Access to clean water and good hygiene practices areextremely effective in preventing childhood diarrhoea.Hand washing with soap has been shown to reducethe incidence of diarrhoeal disease by over 40 percent, making it one of the most cost-effective interventions forreducing child deaths caused by this neglected killer. Theoverall health and nutrition of chi Idren is also criticalto their susceptibility to diarrhoea and the damage itcan cause. Undernourished children are at higher risk ofsuffering more frequent, severe and prolonged episodesof diarrhoea, and repeated bouts of diarrhoea also placechildren at greater risk of worsening nutritional status.
The seven point plan to save the lives of childrenstricken by diarrhoea includes two treatment and fiveprevention elements. The two treatment elements are:1- fluid replacement to prevent dehydration and 2- zinctreatments, which decrease the severity and duration ofthe attack.
While the five prevention elements are: 1- immunizationagainst rotavirus and measles; 2- early and exclusivebreastfeeding and vitamin A supplementation; 3-handwashing with soap 4- improved water supplyquantity and quality and 5- promoting community-widesanitation.
Campaigns targeting childhood diarrhoea in the 70sand 80s achieved success by educating caregiversand scaling up oral rehydration therapy to preventdehydration. The campaigns delivered promising resultsbut following that success, focus shifted to other healthproblems.
There is now an urgent need to shift attention & resourcesback to treating & preventing diarrhoea. - UNICEF /New York, United States, Oct. 14, 2009.

Background:
Gangliosides are components of cell membranes
and are found throughout the body; they are
involved in cell structure and function. in
particular in the brain. The fastest rate of
Ganglioside synthesis and accumulation in the
developing brain occurs during pregnancy and in
early neonatal life. during the periods of dendritic
branching and new synapse formation.

Brain cell structure showing myelinated axonsand dendrites. and synapse connections.

Stimulating neuronal cell outgrowths
- axons and dendrites.
Formation of synapses - Gangliosides are most
concentrated at nerve endings where the
connections between brain cells are formed
Function of the synaptic connections including
neurotransmitter release. recognition of
neurotransmitters. restoration of the synapseFunction in Myelination and in maintaining the

Fonterra Brands believes that breast milk is best for babies and we supportbreastfeeding as the natural and unequalled way in providing the best foodfor optimal growth and development of babies.
Important Notice: Breast Milk is still the Best
Breast milk is the best food for optimal growth and development in infants. This is because breast milk contains just theright amount of all nutrients needed to fulfil the infants' total nutritional requirements during the first 6 months of life. Thebest time to initiate breastfeeding is within 1 hour post-delivery. Furthermore, the act of breastfeeding provides a unique
• biological and emotional foundation for bonding between mother and child. A complete and balanced maternal diet isimportant for maintaining the quality and supply of breast milk. There can be negative effects on breastfeeding if partialbottle-feeding is introduced too early. Once bottle-feeding is initiated, the decision to discontinue breastfeeding may bedifficult to reverse. Prior to using infant formulas, mothers should be aware of the social and financial implications ofbottle-feeding. Incorrect preparation or feeding methods may lead to health hazards in infants. Working mothers shouldbe encouraged to continue breastfeeding for as long as possible, even after they resume their full-time jobs.
