Mark and Meredith Henderson, and Nancy Giffin (this publication’s editor). The Society certainly appreciates their assistance. See the article from Dave Becker regarding the move for a com-plete list of our helpers. These are only the names of folks that I saw assisting. (No disrespect to all that helped and are not mentioned here.)

November is the month of thanksgiv-ing with an emphasis on giving. In that light, I am sponsoring a Musical Instru-ment Collection Drive at our new digs, the warehouse. If you have any unloved and unwanted musical instruments, now is the time to do a little house cleaning. These instruments will be donated to local charities and the underprivileged who cannot afford to purchase equip-ment. The Jazz Society will not profit from this drive, but as one of the largest music non-profits in the area, I believe it is our obligation to help the commu-nity as we have in the past. The dates and times for instrument donations are: Friday, Nov. 21st from 5pm–7pm; Sat-urday, Dec 6th from 10am–2 pm; and Tuesday, Dec. 16th from 5pm–7pm.

If you attend Jazz Sunday on Nov 9th, you may see some new faces in the crowd. We have done some advertising

The last month has been a whirl-wind. We are actively planning the

2015 Sacramento Music Festival and moving very fast doing it. There have been a few days that start at 6am and don’t end until after 10 in the evening. We are making progress to make this a great 2015 festival.

We have had some sponsorships come in and promises of many more. If you are planning on sponsoring a band, venue or the entire festival, please get those decisions made and notify the office by Dec 31st. Although, quite frankly, if you wish to sponsor the festival at $150,000, I can give you a few more days.

Speaking of the Office… We have moved. Due to cost constraints, we have moved our entire operation to the STJS Warehouse. The new address is 301 N. 10th Street; Sacramento, CA 95811. We have moved the phones and internet to the new office and look for-ward to meeting many of you there. We have already had one Volunteer Meeting there, and it has worked well. It is a little crowded, but once we get paired down a bit, I think we will be OK. We had some stellar help from Sarah Ander-son and Joe Enochs as well as Dave and Kathy Becker, Kathy Grimes,

President’s Messageby Ron Jones STJS PRESIDENT

< ro n j o n e s @ s a c j a z z . co m >

It’s November already! October was a busy month for me.and .for many of you who attended one or more of the out-of-

town festivals this past month.

I want to personally thank Tom Duff, and Dave and Kathy Becker, and everyone else who stepped in and helped with the move of our office from Old Sac to the warehouse. This move was necessitated by our need to keep operational expenses to a minimum. It’s a positive step forward, but I want to reit-erate that we are not out of the financial woods yet. Your Board decided to proceed with plans for a 2015 festival, and Tom Duff is working diligently with key volunteers and the Executive Committee to put together a festival budget. Once a budget is approved by the Board, festival plans will move forward. This year, sponsorships will be even more important to our bottom line, so if you or anyone you know is interested in sponsoring at any level, please call our newly located office, or email Tom at [email protected]

We will probably be hosting a number of fundraisers in the coming months. I hope you will all make every effort to sup-port these events (and have fun doing so). Even if you cannot attend, you can purchase a ticket or make a donation. Any donation of any amount helps!

Another potential source of additional revenue is increas-ing attendance at Jazz Sundays. If everyone who comes would bring two or three friends or neighbors, not only would it make for a larger audience, it would also bring in more cash at the gate and the raffle.

Our TNT band and youth programs are doing well. Next month, my wife and I will host the 6th annual Up Close & Personal fundraiser for the 10th annual TJYBF in Feb. 2015. This year we will be “up close” with Joe & Paul Midiri, Bob Draga, Jason Wanner, Shelley Denny – and myself. This promises to be a fantastic evening of great music and a lot of laughs. As of this writing, the event is nearly sold out – contact [email protected] for more info.

Finally, don’t forget to vote! The Nominating Committee has assembled some great candidates, so be sure to cast your vote by absentee ballot or at the December Jazz Sunday.

Have a great day! 2

BOB RINGWALDBob is well-known to Sacramento area musicians and Jazz fans. In the early years of STJS, he was a member of the Board of Directors and served on the Jubilee Talent Selection Com-mittee.  For the past 10 yr., he has served as the STJS Guest Star Coor-dinator and has served the past 8 years on the STJS Board of Directors. Bob is a working, professional musi-cian.  He is the pianist and leader for the Fulton Street Jazz Band.

VIVIAN LEEVivian Lee is a local jazz vocalist and band leader. She has been playing around the area, as well as the Bay and Tahoe for the last 18 years. She is a former board member who has a lot to contribute to the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society. Besides being a vocalist, Vivian was also the hostess for the long-running “Sunday Evening Jazz” series (2003-2014) that showcased local, regional and some national jazz groups. This year, she was inducted into the Black Musicians of America (Sacra-mento Chapter) Hall of Fame as a Music Icon in Sacramento, as well as being chosen Best Jazz Vocalist by the same organization.Vivian brings a perspective from the mainstream straight-ahead sub genre of jazz that will build that bridge between the traditional and the more modern jazz to make our Society and jazz in Sacramento a great force.

DAVE BECKERCURRENTLY SECRETARY – I have been a member of Sacramento Tradi-tional Jazz Society (STJS) since 2005 and have learned a lot as a board member for the past four years. I am currently Secretary on the STJS Board of Directors, Co-Chair of the Membership Committee, Chairper-son of the Governance Committee and member of the Music Commit-tee. I assist in the STJS Office. At Jazz Sundays, I assist at Admission Table, Raffle and Membership table (the guy that sits behind the table). I am one of the many volunteers at the Traditional Jazz Youth Band Festival (TJYBF) and a volunteer any place they need assistance. I have an Associate degree in Applied Science in Computer Information System Web Development. I am retired from Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) after 27 years as Facility Manager, Safety Manager and many other positions. Also retired from 22 years of service in the U.S. Air Force.

VANNA TURNERINCUMBENT – My journey to the Board began around 1978, when my toddlers and I would listen to the youth bands play on The Delta Dock at the Jazz Jubilee. Oh how we loved the Festival! Years later my daughter joined a youth band, and I began volunteering at venues (I currently volunteer in the STJS office). In the short year I’ve served on the Board I’ve been involved in some painful but positive decisions. Yet there’s much more work to be done to see that our cherished Festival contin-ues beyond 2015. With your vote I’ll continue the hard work and creative thinking required to move forward. I’m an active musician in STJS as a Gold Card vocalist, an EVERY-month Jazz Sunday attendee, a performer with Vanna & The Jazzin’ JAKs, and an STJS adult jazz camper. My Lead-ership experiences include  teach-ing  English and Choir in  middle/high  school, supervising student teachers, and  chairing the English Department.

TODD BIBBYINCUMBENT (full bio next month) Longtime volunteer (Festival Opera-tions, and Drums) who brings tech-nical expertise to STJS.

JOE CRUZI live in Folsom, CA and retired as a supervisor at McClellan Air Force Base. I also own my own business, Cruz Electric. I have been an active volunteer for several Sacramento organizations, including KVIE Public Television, the California State Fair, and the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee. At KVIE, I held several chairman positions working the membership drives and the annual two-week auction, and served as a member of the Volunteer Board of Directors. For the CA State Fair, I was active on some of the Friends of the Fair committees and served as Presi-dent for three years. I began my Jubilee volunteer work about 25 years ago, spending the majority of my time at Turntable Junction. My service in the Cabaret included various functions eventually becom-ing shift manager. I worked Crocker Park as shift manager for two years and one year at Raley Field, and two years in food concessions. I’ve been working with the jazz office on various activities, and restruc-turing the Festival’s construction group. My ability to analyze prob-lem areas, make recommendations, and manage workers is among my skills. I was offered the position of Construction Manager in 2012. This group is responsible for constructing all the fencing, and building stages, steps, platforms and dance floors. I feel I can work extremely well with the construction volunteers and have developed a cohesive, effective working group.

SCOTT KAUFMANINCUMBENT – I have proudly served on the STJS Board of Directors for the past eight years and believe strongly in the value of preserving the American art form of Tradi-tional Jazz. I was the longtime DJ at the Davis Grad’s Sunday Night Swing venue from 1998 to 2005. In 2005, I opened up Midtown Stomp, a swing dance venue dedicated to the preservation of Lindy Hop and other vintage forms of dance done to Traditional Jazz and Swing music. Midtown Stomp has become one of the largest weekly swing dances in California. I bring a background in marketing, event planning, and technology, all used together in creative ways to promote events. I’ve planned our festival’s “Swing Dance Contest” since it’s inception. After watching thousands of people dance to Traditional Jazz and Swing music over the past 17 years, I firmly believe that people love Traditional Jazz but don’t know it…yet.

DENNIS SPECIALEINCUMBENT – I started attending the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee with my dad in the late ‘70s. My most treasured memories are those times I spent with my father at the Jubilee. My father became a volunteer in 1977 and was the Jubilee’s greatest advocate. I finally became a vol-unteer in 1987 and became Ticket Control Manager in the late nine-ties. I believe the Sacramento Music Festival to be a cultural jewel for the city and will work hard to keep it. I am proud of the Society’s youth pro-grams and will always be its biggest promoter. As a longtime volunteer, I am always impressed with our ded-icated members and volunteer staff, and will always appreciate their efforts. I am a lifelong resident of California, and a US Army Veteran. I have a Bachelor of Science in Busi-ness Administration – Accounting. I am currently employed at the CA State Controller’s Office as an Accounting Administrator. I have had the honor of serving on the STJS Board of Directors as Secre-tary for the past two years. Currently, I am serving as Vice-President, appointed to the position tempo-rarily by the Board. The coming year brings many challenges, and with your support, I know we can meet those challenges. I am looking forward to a successful 2015 Sacra-mento Music Festival.

DENNIS GRIMESI have been a member of the STJS since 1985. I have been a member of the Festival management com-mittee, and the Board of Directors. I have worked closely with the present treasurer in developing the last two budgets. I have worked with Lisa in analyzing the budgets of the last three years looking for areas where we can save money and stream line various areas. I have been an active advocate for the volunteers. I have been a volunteer for the Festival for 29 years in the financial area. I started in ticket sales with my wife Kathy and move onto Couriers. We advanced through the ranks to become the managers of the Courier group for ten years. A few years ago I became manager of the Financial group, overseeing the Finance department, Couriers, Ticket Sales and Admission sales. I negotiated and set up the online admission ticket sales. With my financial background I will be able to continue monitoring the Finan-cials so we can get back on track to financial stability.

Dan Barrett (cont.) Dan and his wife, Laura, moved to New York City in 1983. He spent a busy couple of years touring with and writing for the Widespread Jazz Orchestra, and later was a frequent guest at Eddie Condon’s jazz club and other Manhattan night-spots. It was at Eddie Condon’s that Benny Goodman first heard Dan play, and shortly thereafter asked him to join what would be the King of Swing’s last orchestra (Benny Good-man & His Orchestra). While in New York, Dan also co-led the popular Howard Alden–Dan Barrett Quintet (the ABQ). Dan has played both valve and slide trombones for many motion pictures, including The Cotton Club and Brighton Beach Memoirs, as well as Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite, Everyone Says I Love You, and Bullets Over Broadway. If you look fast, you can see Dan on the screen in the latter film. (He’s featured a bit more in the movie Wild Man Blues. This award-winning film documents a three-week tour of Europe by Woody Allen’s New Orleans Jazz Band). Dan has performed four times at Carnegie Hall: with Woody Herman (and the New York Pops Orchestra), Joe Bushkin, and in two trib-utes to Louis Armstrong, respectively. Additionally, he has composed and arranged the theme music for the American Play-house television production of Rocket to the Moon, and Chris-topher Munch’s motion picture The Sleepy Time Gal, starring Jacqueline Bisset. Dan still finds the time to appear at numerous jazz parties and festivals throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan.

Barrett has recorded under his own name and with many respected jazz artists. A partial list includes Doc Cheatham, Scott Hamilton, Bob Haggart, Rosemary Clooney, Ruby Braff, Joe Bushkin, Jay McShann, Buck Clayton and Benny Goodman! Dan is especially proud of his associations with Messrs. Clayton and Goodman, for each of whom he played lead trombone and was a featured soloist.

In addition to his freelance activities, Dan continues to pursue his interest in arranging and orchestration. One of his more ambitious projects was scoring the “St. Louis Blues” for jazz band and symphony orchestra. His writing can be heard on many Arbors Records CDs, including I Saw Stars, Moon Song, and Blue Swing (all featuring vocalist Rebecca Kilgore), and Look What I Found, with vocalist Daryl Sherman. An earlier recording (for another label) arranged by Barrett and featuring the late, great Bobby Short, garnered a Grammy nomination.

Still another CD occasioned this comment from John S. Wilson (erstwhile jazz reviewer for The New York Times): “(He) is one of the delights here; a melodist, a colorist who knows how to use a plunger mute with taste and, in total, a player Duke Ellington would have loved.”

In 1996, Dan and his family returned to Southern Califor-nia. He has since been nominated for the Bell Atlantic Jazz Award for “Trombonist of the Year,” and came in on top in a Mississippi Rag poll as its readership’s “Favorite Living Trom-bonist.” He is mentioned with high praise in the new Biograph-ical Encyclopedia of Jazz (by Ira Gitler and the late Leonard Feather), as well as the Guinness Who’s-Who of Jazz.

Dan currently tours the majority of the time with the Rebecca Kilgore Quartet. The “RK4” is the group formerly known as BED), an ensemble consisting of longtime friends and musical cohorts Rebecca “Becky” Kilgore, Eddie Erickson and Joel Forbes. It is the RK4 (as BED) that is featured on the soundtrack of the aforementioned film, The Sleepy Time Gal. The RK4 con-tinues to gain friends and fans at its numerous appearances at festivals and jazz parties both in the USA and abroad.

Dan’s all-star assemblage Blue Swing combines the RK4 with four other all-star performers. Blue Swing has been get-ting together for festival appearances (and recordings) for a number of years, and features some of the finest players on the scene these days. Dan likes to remind prospective festival and jazz party producers—and even folks who would like to have a fun and exciting jazz group for their private party or event—that both the Rebecca Kilgore Quartet and Blue Swing are “only a phone call away.” For more info or booking inquiries, send an email to: [email protected] 2

I deem it doubtful that we have ever before had a guest star who played with more iconic bands than Dan Comins:

Titanic JB, Dan Barrett’s Back Bay JB, (Black Eagles’ pre-cursor) Heritage JB, the Carl Lunsford JB, Doc Ryan’s East Bay City JB, and 25 years(!) with South Frisco! He has, as you might say, honed his chops. And he showed them to glorious effect on Jazz Sunday. Man, is he GOOD! He led the local boys through two slam-bang sets. Jay Paulus and Brandon Au were his trombonists, Mark Curry was on clarinet and Bob Ringwald on piano for both sets; Darrell Fernandez was on bass for Set 2, with Jim Maihack on banjo, switching to tuba for Set 4. Vince Bartels and Bob Stover were the drum-mers. An OKOM set to remember. So fun!

Of course, with 15 young musicians, River City Swingers on Set 1 was WAY fun. The members range from 10-18 years old—or, put another way, 6th to 12th grades—and Director Mica Dugan has sculpted them into a startlingly good musical crew. Grady Flamm, Kelsey Smith and Antonio Novoa-Cas-tillo are the trumpet section. Brandon Charriere, Sophia

Flores, Sophie Modar and Arthur Erikkson are on alto (Sophia also plays clarinet). Tenor player Joanna Koford also sings. Thomas Monce and Claire Parker are on trombone, and E.J. Monjares is on bari. The rhythm section is Montana Monce on piano, Ryan Ioanidis on bass, with Joseph Bly and Garrett Frazier on drums. One fun number was a New Orle-ans-style arrangement of “Good Night Ladies.”

Garrett’s brother, Owen, was in the Tailgate’s Set 1, so Mom April and Dad Rex were a little distracted but enjoying themselves. Deb Osfeld was there for Kelsey Smith in River City AND Mike Osfeld in Tailgate Set 3, so she was only slightly less distracted. Joseph’s parents, Karl and Terrie Bly, only had one youngster to focus on, as did Sophie Modar’s parents, Roy and Denise, and grandmother Jeanne Bei.

The Main Stage Set 3 jam set was led by Jeff Kreis on trumpet, with Dan Talbert on trombone, Gene Mondro on clarinet, and a rhythm section of Bob Ringwald, piano, Zack Sapunor, bass, and Greg Ayala on drums. Charming emcee Devan Kortan was excellent in his second outing at the mic.

There was a more-than-usually-engaging match-up in Tail-gate Set 1: Parker Weis and Donald Parker were the reed sec-tion. Since Parker Weis is now 14, and an experienced music instructor, and Donald Parker is 10 and has been playing for

all of three months, Parker was helping to mentor Donald, with the gentle help of trombonist Bob Gonzales. Owen Fra-zier was on bass, Frank Lindskoog on piano, Dave Metz on banjo, Bill Chamberlain on drums, and Claude Purcell on vocals. Donald’s father, Kent Parker, said he found STJS on the internet. Donald is studying with Benjamin Wallace.

TG 2 was led by Lee Monthei on trumpet, with Larry Tyr-rell on trombone, Duncan McElman and Jared Eastlick on reeds, Rich O’Day on piano, Metz on banjo, David Rees on bass and Carl Warmdahl on drums. Newly-minted Gold Card members Audrey Edley and Bev Ludlow were the vocalists, following auditions in the Gold Card Room. Thanks to the “audition band,” including drummer Jack Scott.

I saw Duncan later in the afternoon, sitting at the Tailgate Room Runner’s table, a sandwich in one hand and doing his English homework with the other—and listening to Jazz!

Grady Flamm transitioned from Main Stage with River City Swingers to the Tailgate to share trumpet duties on TG 3 with Michael Osfeld. Bob Gonzales was back, and they were joined by Nancy Kreis on reeds, Bill Taylor on piano, Pearl Nicolino on banjo, Dave Sieber on bass, Jim Laveroni on drums and Jane Reinmuth on vocals. Jane will be gone for several months starting in November, recovering from a scheduled knee surgery.

Get well soon, Jane! You will be missed these upcoming months.

The Tailgate wound up the day with Bob Sumners leading Set 4, with Jack Mootz, Carl Kaiser and Bill Au splitting the trombone duties, Parker Weis on reeds, Ned Poffinbarger on banjo, Mike Melnikov on bass and Mica Dugan on drums, and Reinmuth on vocals. Billie Menz was on piano, after too-long an absence. Jim Laveroni was pushing wife Carol’s wheel chair; she broke her leg at the San Diego Zoo but chose not to let that keep her from jazz. Paula Dula introduced Dorit Benjamini as the songbird with the broken wing, but Dorit said her rotator cuff just wore out. She said Eddi has been cooking and clean-ing, and being an absolute angel. That’s what we like to hear.

Kurtis Fulbright said he’s much better after his last sur-gery, when they fished out a gob of concrete. And Wendy Maihack! She’s a champ! Already up and working with a physical therapist, far exceeding her doctors’ expectations. What a toughie. Jim said, “If you ever get a chance to marry a woman like that, take it!” Vivian Abraham, Executive Director Emerita—not to men-tion all those years as Business Manager—is set to begin radiation therapy for squamous cell cancer nodules in her lungs. Send out your strongest prayers and best wishes! (Continued on page 10.)

10 November 2014

The Gold Card Room started with Dick Lockwood on reeds, Carl Kaiser on piano, Mark Kramer on guitar and Nicolino on banjo, the angelic Eddi Benja-mini on bass, Dan Lobay on drums and Vanna Turner on vocals. Kaiser moved to trombone on GCR 2, with Mondro, Lindskoog, Benjamini, Laveroni, and Thom Bentley on strings. Clint Ritchie and Robin King were on vocals. You may have noticed a strange dearth of trumpet players through Tailgate and GCR sets, with several being led by the trom-bone player, including Jack Mootz on GCR 4. He was joined by Nancy Kreis on reeds, Lindskoog, Metz, Rees, Warmdahl, and Robin King on vocals. Jay Paulus’ advanced planning resulted in GCR Set 5 with Paulus, Jeff Kreis, Weis, Lockwood, Sieber, and Laveroni, with Jim Fusaro and Barbara Paulus on vocals.

And, of course, vocalists on Set 3 were supported by Dick Lockwood, Alan Ginter, Jim Roberson and Ken Meyers. Dorit o’ the Broken Wing started with “S’Wonderful.” Jeanette Hall just recently heard “When Rastus Plays His Old Kazoo” and tracked down the lyrics. She delivered it complete with a kazoo chorus. Edd Burhans surprised us all with a sweet “As Time Goes By.” I keep telling you, he’s a softie at heart! Paula intro-duced Wally Hawkins as “Sweet Walter” because he was singing “Cheek to Cheek.” Clint Ritchie’s “What a Wonderful World” included a wonderful trumpet and clarinet duet with Lockwood.

Back after several months’ absence, Pam Lehnert sang “The More I See You,” and Jay Casl, also glad to be back and looking fit after an absence due to heart surgery, sang “’Round Midnight.” Claude Purcell sang “Night and Day” and Jackie Clausson presented “Nevertheless.” Julie Meyers’ did a “London medley” with “London by Night” and “A Nightin-gale Sang in Berkeley Square.” Pat Kennedy’s “Tangerine” was haunting, and Bev Ludlow’s “Sugar” was peppy, and Joanna Koford said “It’s D’Lovely.”

T Jackson sang “Matchmaker” from Fidler, and Harry Duvall did “Easy Street” from Annie. Alan Ginter, being Alan Ginter, said Columbus Day is the anniversary of Christopher Columbus bringing smallpox to the New World, although HE [Alan] thinks of it as his Mother’s birthday. And neither remark had anything to do with his presentation of Guy Mitchell’s “I Never Felt Much Like Singing the Blues.” Larry Sikorski’s offering was “All or Nothing at All,” and Paula Dula closed out the set with “Here’s That Rainy Day.” But the stars – STARS – of the day were Kate Rees and Vanna Turner. Kate had promised a novelty song, and boy was it ever! “How Could Red Riding Hood (have been so very good and still keep the wolf from the door?)” Some of A.P Ran-dolph’s lyrics apparently made it the first song banned from the radio for “suggestive” lyrics, by 1926 standards! Then Vanna Turner topped that with a 1919 Irving Berlin gem, “You’d

(Cont. from page 9) Be Surprised. (Really.)” Madeline Kahn’s version at Berlin’s 100th Birthday celebration in 1988 is a riot! Find it on You-Tube. (Or ask Vanna for an encore.)

Robin King, by the way, read about us in the Bee and brought her friends, Abby Roseman and Thom Bentley; Robin and Thom both wound up performing in GCR. They were sharing a table with Tom Brunette, who is the Elks’ Leading Knight, their #2 guy, and John Stellmach, who said he’s a “good Elk,” does lots of volunteering. Nice guys. I’d bet they’ll both be helping out at the Holiday Arts & Crafts Faire on Saturday, November 8, from 9 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

When I walked up to Jean Alley, she told her friend Luane Strong, “Watch what you say, you might wind up in the news-letter.” But she was smiling when she said it. And she’s right; their comments on the move to the Elks were quoted in the July paper. A little longer ago for John and Ginny Bankerd: We last talked when Bob Schulz was a guest. Here today for Dan Comins, though. They were big fans of South Frisco JB even before Dan joined that band. Jenna Welk enrolled her boyfriend, Tom Layton, as an Admission Desk volunteer. We’re lucky to have such engaging folks as our greeters. Cameron Buck (she plays drums and piano) and Cole Phillips were on their feet cheering in the main room.

Lauren Doran is Editor Nancy Giffin’s niece, visiting for a few weeks. Lauren is a musician—guitar and vocals (and bass and drums)—who writes and arranges all the music for her band. Nancy took her to Straw Hat to see Beth Goodfellow on drums, and enjoyed seeing the two young ladies chatting after the show.

Chris Jordan learned about us from the Bee’s “Ticket” section. Kathy Moreira and Michael Reilly are from Stock-ton, drove up to see Comins, and will be back for November headliner Dan Barrett, and for Rigney in December!

It was a FUN day at the Raffle Table – a Pat Hansen parasol, and Kathy Becker herself made most of the spooky and fun ceramic ghosties and goblins for the Halloween-themed table.

Did you make it to the STJS fundraiser Hoedown on November 1? Thanks to “Eddie Burr” and Coralie Cochran, and Fund-Raising Queen Kathy Becker for this fab idea. Eddie Burr and His Western Swingers will also be at Sac-ramento Inn on November 6, 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. There’s a new group at Mather Field Drive Straw Hat Pizza (led by Don Luthringer) and calling itself the Big City 5; it debuts on November 5, 6:30 to 9:00 pm. Bruce Bolin and Tressa Gaye’s Sly Fox Jazz Band can be found at Judy’s Wild Wrangler Saloon in Vacaville on Nov. 8. Rio Americano’s 34th annual Playathon is Friday, Nov. 7, from 7:00 a.m. to midnight! Lots of fun! That’s what we LOVE about Jazz – it is exuberantly, unreservedly FUN. 2

Thank you, Volunteersby Dave Becker STJS SECRETARY

What an AWESOME MOVE – THANK YOU ALL FOR THE HELP! Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society

(STJS) Office has official moved to the STJS Warehouse. I want to personally thank all the volunteers that came down to the STJS Office and helped box pictures from the walls, stor-age cabinets, etc. and take boxes down to the warehouse, if it wasn’t for these volunteers it would have taken much longer than it did. The volunteers are:

Kathy Becker almost lived there every day for a couple of weeks. Kathy Grimes, Joanne Gannon, Nancy Giffin, Carol and Jim Fusaro, Tom and Paige Morrow, Mark and Meredith Henderson. Then we had two youngsters that were UNBELIEVABLE, if you stood in one spot to long they would carry you into the moving truck, THEY WERE AWE-SOME. They did not stop until the move was completed:

Sarah Anderson and Joe Enochs (Kathy Becker’s son)

I also want to thank Todd Bibby for setting up the tele-phone system and internet in the Warehouse. The phone number is the same: 916-444-2004.

The new address for the STJS Office is 301 N. 10th Street, Sacramento, CA 95811

THANK YOU ALL AGAIN – Dave 2
