A Note From Pastor Janet Wold
Dear Friends, The season of Lent is upon us – Ash Wednesday began our Lenten season on February 14. The word “Lent” comes from an old English word meaning “to lengthen” and it names the time of year when the days get longer in the spring. After the cold, dark and often dismal months of the year come the signs of renewal. Lent is meant to be a tithe of our time to God. We know that a year is 365 days in length – and a tithe of that time (10% of that time) would equal about 36 days…approximately the same length as the season of Lent. These days of Lent are to be a time when we renew our relationship with God (one of the reasons we add a mid-week worship service) and examine our need for a Savior. Ash Wednesday service is a time of confession – but a word of absolution isn’t spoken until Maundy Thursday, giving us time to truly reflect on our sinfulness and our need for Christ to have to go to the cross to die for our sins. Our mid-week Lenten services began on February 21 and continue through March 21 at 7:00 pm. We are using a service called Holden Evening Prayer – it really is a beautiful, contemplative service. Special thanks to those who are lending their voices for their vocal solos that enhance the service! This worship lasts about ½ hour. I hope you’ll plan on making these mid-week services a part of your Lenten journey. The services are preceded by a simple supper at 6:00 pm. Come join us! As we spend these next weeks intentionally thinking about the sacrifice Christ has made for us and the gift of our relationship with God, perhaps this would be a particularly good time to think about inviting someone you know to church. Did you know that there are thousands of people in our greater Byron community that have no faith involvement at all? Think about your neighbors, co-workers or family – who do you know that you could invite to come to one of our mid-week suppers and worship? Who might be waiting for you to invite their children to come to Sunday school with your children? Who would enjoy an opportunity to come with you to Sunday morning worship and then go to brunch with you? Please pray intentionally about this – God will work through you! As I look around at our life here at All Saints, and in my own personal life, I can see the hand of God clearly guiding us. My prayer is that you sense God’s presence as well and will be called into action as we all seek ways to share God’s love.
In Christ,
Pastor Janet Wold
Welcome New Members! On Sunday, January 28 we welcomed the following people into our family of faith here at All Saints: Bill and Pam Frenk – Bill and Pam live in Byron and are semi-retired. They enjoy gardening and visiting their two adult sons (David and Ryan) and their families – especially the grandkids! Carla Leddy – Carla also lives in Byron. She is an avid golfer and looks forward to the weather warming up to be able to get back out on the links! Annette Leombruni Jones – Annette is married to long time member, Steve Jones. They also live in Byron. Annette has been worshiping with us for 10 years and has now decided to “make it official!” She enjoys cooking, music festivals and family. Look for the pictures of these new folks on the bulletin board in the narthex. Welcome!

Wednesday Bible Study - 1:30 p.m.
This group meets each Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 pm. Beginning March 14, we will be studying the Gospel of Mark utilizing a DVD performance of the Gospel of Mark! The first Christians heard the stories about Jesus; they didn't read them. This DVD, filmed live at the Lay School of Ministry in the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin, allows 21st century Christians to experience the gospel just as the early Christians would have: in performance. Phil Ruge-Jones, Associate Professor of Theology at Texas Lutheran University, and member of the Network of Biblical Storytellers, performs the entire Gospel of Mark from memory. As the word becomes a living word, you will experience the passionate impact of the good news of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. The Gospel of Mark will never be the same for you!

You might have noticed the beautiful new white banner hanging in the Sanctuary on Sunday, February 11. This banner is a gift from Doug and
Lynn Knodle in memory of their fathers, Mel Knodle and John Hunsaker. We will dedicate this banner very soon in their memory. Watch for new
banners to appear over the coming months! We're replacing some of the more worn banners that have decorated our church for many years and are in need of retirement. If you would like to contribute
towards a new banner, please contact Kay Johnson or any of the altar guild members listed in
the Sunday bulletin. Banners run approximately $150.00 each and are silkscreened on silk
fabric.
QUILTERS The quilters plan to meet on March 1st at the church from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Nine ladies came out in the cold to tie quilts together at the February meeting. The previous week four people came and pinned the three layers of fabric together so ten quilts were all pinned and ready for the regular meeting we had on February 1st. Working together on a service project for people in need brings out much conversation and laughter. We enjoy coffee time and then get back to work! Please join us on the first Thursday of the month.
The GATHERING The GATHERING will meet on Tuesday, March 13 in the fellowship hall. Bring your craft items to work on or just come and enjoy the fellowship and fun! We were saddened to hear of the passing of Annette Hall in February. Annette lived in the area, and created many of the lap robes that we have donated to the Cancer Center. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.

WELCA
The first WELCA meeting of 2018 was held on
January 20 and began with a delicious breakfast buffet. Among the many subjects addressed was the election of officers for the coming year. Elected were:
Marlene Roberts and Kay Johnson, Co-Conveners; Anne Morgart, Secretary; and Jan Sloan, Treasurer. If you have any questions about WELCA, please ask one
of these ladies and they will help you! In the absence of a wish list from LSSI, we voted to give them a monetary donation of $150.00 to be used for the
greatest need. We also voted to donate $100 to the Northern IL Synod to help offset the cost of extra luggage for those leaving for the mission trip to India
in February. This will help pay for the transport of donated items they will be carrying with them. The dates were set for the annual spring rummage sale.
Set-up will be held on April 9 through 11 with the rummage and bake sale commencing on April 12 through 14. Watch for more information in the April
newsletter regarding drop-off of your donated items. We also discussed the fundraisers for the youth group who will be attending the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston in June, and encouraged all to help however
they can with their efforts, including bringing items for the Palm Sunday bake sale. The next WELCA meeting will be April 21 at 9:00 am. All women of
All Saints are members of WELCA and are invited and encouraged to attend the meetings and events.

Book Club
The Book Club selection this month is The Lost Quilter, by Jennifer Chiaverini. A master quilter, Sylvia, wishes to learn more about Joanna, a fugitive slave that traveled the Underground Railroad to safe haven in Sylvia's ancestral home. When Joanna was captured and sent away, she left her son to be raised by the Bergstrom family. Sylvia uses a maiden aunt's diary and a quilt made by Joanna containing clues to connect her to the present day farm. Join us on March 26 at 1:00 pm.
FINAL WISHES WORKSHOP – Monday, April 16, 7:00-9:00 pm Talking about death and our wishes regarding our dying and funerals can be a difficult topic to broach with our loved ones. However, letting our wishes be known is so very, very helpful to our loved ones at the time it happens! Please join us for a discussion of these needs and receive resources to help you make your wishes known. The evening will have 3 parts: 1. What happens when someone is dying – how can
hospice help? Representatives from Serenity Hospice will be here that evening to facilitate that discussion.
2. What happens when someone has died – what does the funeral home do? A funeral director from Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral home will be with us to answer those questions.
3. How do we plan a funeral service? – Pastor Janet will talk about this and hand out suggested scripture readings and hymns as well as a sheet where you can indicate your wishes to your loved one prior to your death.
