LENTEN REGULATIONSThe season of Lent began on Ash Wednesday, March 6. Lenten regulations are as follows: Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birth-day are to abstain from meat on Ash Wednes-day, all Fridays in Lent, and Good Friday. In addition to abstaining from meat, Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, until they celebrate their 59th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.  Those who are bound to this regulation may eat only one full meal.  Two smaller meals are permit-ted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

LENTEN WEEKDAY SERVICESThe schedule of Masses and confessions during the weekdays of Lent is the same as in Ordinary Time. In addition there are Stations of the Cross on weekdays at 11:40 am. There is exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on the Fridays of Lent after the 12:10 pm Mass until Benediction after the Stations of the Cross at 5:10 pm.

LENTEN SOUP SUPPERSThe Cathedral Parish will resume its Lenten Soup Suppers during the Friday’s of Lent. The evening opens with Stations of the Cross and Benedic-tion at 5:10 pm, followed by a soup supper in the Undercroft. As in other years the people of the parish are being asked to donate yeast or sweetbreads for each of the suppers. They can be dropped off in the Undercroft near the kitchen. CATHEDRAL BOOK CLUBCome join the Cathedral Book Club on Thurs-day, March 28, at 9:00 am, in the Gathering Area for a book discussion on From Islam to Christ, authored by Derya Little. This book had been scheduled for discussion in October but switched places with Louisa May Alcott’s book entitled Little Women, which was discussed on Thursday, October 25 of last year. Everyone is welcome to join the Cathedral Book Club in all of its activities.

PALMSA box for old palms is found in the aisle that leads from the main body of the Cathedral to the Sacristy. Since they are blessed, they are to be disposed properly and not thrown in the gar-bage. The box will be left there until mid-May.

so much snow and ice starting so late in the season. This year will be the latest that I have been able to walk outside. The ! rst day was March 17th which it felt good to get outside again watching very carefully for icy sidewalks.

Perhaps this bad winter is a part of Lent for us. I think we will be extremely happy to see spring and Easter come. Maybe it will teach us to appreciate the variety of the seasons. Maybe it will teach us too not to complain about the heat and humid when summer comes!

Thank you and God bless you.

HOLY WEEK SCHEDULETo servers, lectors, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion: the schedule for Holy Week will be posted very soon in the sacristy and we need your assistance. Please sign up as soon as possible. Thank you very much.

Dear parishioners and visitors,

Over a month ago, I went on vacation with Fr. Hennes to visit friends in Arizona. When I made the reservation to go be train almost a year before, no one would have guessed what the weather would be this past February. We left on the day that it snowed the most in La Crosse so far this year. Even though the train was 17 hours late, we made it to catch the train out of Chicago for Arizona. What has been even more interesting, how times trains, planes and going by car had to be changed due to the weather. This will be a winter not forget for getting

THE JOY OF SERVINGHospitality (Ushering) is a very important and satisfying Ministry to serve for our Cathedral. For many attending Mass or a Diocesan event, the ! rst person they meet is an usher wearing a green jacket. By providing a warm and welcom-ing environment, we, as ushers, may help cre-ate an opportunity for parishioners and visitors alike, to have a more meaningful sacred wor-ship experience.

Usher duties include distributing Worship Aids, collect offerings, help with seating and assist-ing those individuals with special needs. At the conclusion of Mass or other gatherings, ushers hand out bulletins and do a little housekeeping of the pews to prepare for the next Mass.

Some ushers serve in more than one Ministry, as it is encouraged to participate in other Ministries as well. It is in this service to our Cathedral and those attending it, that we are rewarded with a sense of serving others and give true meaning to Hospitality.

If you are interested in ushering, send an email to of! [email protected].

HANDBELL CHOIR SCHEDULEThere has been a slight adjustment to the Hand-bell Choir schedule. The Handbell Choir will play Saturday, March 30 and April 27.

RELIGIOUS LEADERSHIP & STAFF

Bulletin Deadline:The Cathedral Bulletin deadline is 4:00 pm each Monday.

KNIGHTS OF ST. JOSEPHMen, just before we hear the Gospel proclaimed at each Mass, we sign ourselves on our fore-heads, lips, and hearts. Through the tradition of the triple cross, we are asking the Lord to bless our minds and our hearts that they will be open to hear the Gospel (meaning the good news), so we might proclaim through our lips the good news of Jesus to all the world. We cross our forehead so that the Word of God may be in our thoughts and purify our minds. We cross our lips so that our speech may be holy and in-cline us to share the Gospel with others. And we cross our hearts to invite God to strengthen our love for Him and others. All of this is so that we might know, proclaim, and love Jesus Christ all the more.

Do you just go through the motions of making the triple cross at every Mass before the Gos-pel is proclaimed and are you taking to heart what each of these signings signify? How is your spiritual life? Is it like the abandoned farm-house ready to collapse in on itself because it isn’t being properly maintained by the frequent reception of the sacraments? Maybe this Lenten season it is time to shore up the crumbling and deteriorating foundation of one’s faith by read-ing Holy Scripture and the Catechism; or study what the Church Fathers and Saints have taught us through the centuries.

Are our minds and hearts clouded over like a dirty window to the point that we can’t see our failings, shortcomings and sinfulness and rec-ognize that we are in constant need of God’s mercy and forgiveness? Whatever the condition is of your spiritual life, set to task this Lent and take out the necessary tools to make repairs to restore and strengthen your interior life much as a carpenter would do to restore a dilapidated farmhouse. Adhere to the disciplines of Lent, amend your lives and avail yourselves to the Sacraments so that when you triple sign yourself before the proclamation of the Gospel, you can knowingly carry out what they each signify.

For the months of March and April, the Knights of St. Joseph will join in solidarity with the pa-rishioners of St. James the Less (1032 Caledonia Street) to pray the Stations of the Cross on Fri-day, March 8 and Friday, April 12, at 5:15 pm, and join the parishioners in Murphy Hall for their Lenten soup suppers.

On Friday, May 10, at 6:00 pm, we will resume our Evenings of Prayer on the second Friday’s of the month.

SACRAMENTS & SERVICES

A LITTLE BOY ASKS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION Recently I remained in my pew after Sunday Mass for some time of re% ection. Within minutes, a rambunctious little boy with spe-cial needs ran down the center aisle. I am sure that the long open space was very inviting to him. He then went up some side stairs and through the sanctuary and back down the main steps. His older brother was trying to catch up in order to stop him. The older brother ! nally caught him at the bottom of the stairs. This had all happened very quietly and I had not noticed the situation until this point. The older brother said to his young brother, “You can’t run up there. The sanctuary is a holy place.” And the little boy asked an important question. “Why?”

I immediately began thinking about how I would answer the little boy’s question. My ! rst response would have been to point at the tabernacle and explain that Jesus is truly present there. The red sanctuary candle, which is always nearby, reminds us of this fact. This would suf! ce for the little boy at this point, with the idea of always adding more as he matures.

For an adult, my response would include more explanation about the tabernacle and the Holy Eucharist. The tabernacle is the beautiful receptacle in the Church in which the Holy Eucha-rist is reserved. The Holy Eucharist is Jesus Himself. This is the reason why we genu% ect, reverently going down on our right knee to the % oor (or bowing our head if we cannot genu% ect) as we enter and depart our pew in a Catholic Church.

Jesus desires to remain with us always. How does this happen, that Jesus becomes truly present at the hands of an ordained Catholic priest? During Holy Mass, the priest, standing in the Person of Jesus, repeats the words of Christ from the Last Supper. As the priest takes the bread, he says, “Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is My Body, which will be given up for you.” And then the priest takes the chalice and says, “Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of My Blood, the Blood of

the new and eternal Covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of Me.” (See the Last Supper narrative in these three Gospels: Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14: 22-24; Luke 22: 14-20) After the priest prays these words of consecration, the host still looks like bread and the wine still tastes like wine, but the bread and wine have become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. And don’t we need to be exceedingly astonished at this incred-ible miracle? Of course, the other amazing thing is that Jesus allows us to receive Him in Holy Communion. We want to be nourished and grow in our awareness of the astounding love that Jesus has for each one of us, in that He gives Himself totally to us, literally dwelling in our hearts. Why is this so important? Every one of us deals with worries, dis-tress, fear and dif! culties that life brings each day. These things weigh us down. Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you. My own peace I give to you: a peace the world cannot give, this is My gift to you. Let not your hearts be troubled or afraid.” (John 14:27) Jesus wants us to come to Him, laying before Him our problems, and putting ourselves into His care. Attending Mass and receiv-ing Jesus in Holy Communion is the most privileged place to encounter Jesus. It is here that we most abundantly receive the peace that Jesus wants to give us if we open our hearts to Him.

During this holy season of Lent, consider this: in addition to Sunday, you might resolve to go to Mass at least once during the week. This will afford you the opportunity to become more at-tuned to Jesus’ True Presence in the Holy Eucharist.

Let us slow down a bit—like the boy at the end of his run – and allow for more precious moments of silence during Lent, to be with Jesus. He is the only One who can bring us true peace and ultimately satisfy our restless hearts.
