Rabbi Meir would say, “A person is obligated to recite 100 blessings daily.” - B. Menachot 43b

It often feels like many people we interact with have an overwhelming sense of entitlement. They feel like the world owes them something, that all of the bad things that happen are because of someone else, and for all the good, they deserve credit. We love to cast blame, to point out what is unfair, and to smile and shrug when the dice land in our favor. We take more than we give, and we have trouble appreciating the hard work other people put in to make our world better. It seems we have forgotten the most basic prayer: “Thank you.”

Last month we had the opportunity to celebrate our 40th Anniversary with an amazing gala at the Island Hotel Newport Beach, and it seems perfect that this month is when we celebrate Thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for at CBT.

When I talk to colleagues about our congregation, I often describe us as “small but mighty”; a congregation whose participation belies its size. I get asked if it is difficult moving from a 700-family synagogue to a 300-family one, if my family feels like we downsized, and if I miss having the resources of a larger congregation. Well, sure, resources are nice, but there is something special about CBT, and I usually say that this congregation is the perfect match for my family and me. We love the fact that the congregation is small enough for us to get to know people, and I love to say that we typically get more people at a Shabbat service than many larger congregations. We have an active cadre of worshippers and learners, and many who do both. We have a youth group that has the potential to be a regional powerhouse in a few years, quality opportunities for education at every level, dedicated volunteers who participate in social action both here and around the community, and people who make sure everyone who walks in our door knows that they matter.

I am so thankful for CBT.

I want to take the opportunity in this month of Thanksgiving to say a special thank-you to Rose Lesser and Debbie Biebelberg. We have done a lot of thanking them over that last year and a half, and they keep outdoing themselves at every stage. They worked so hard to put together that wonderful gala, and all the services throughout the year that will keep us celebrating, and not enough can ever be said to express how much they have done for us.

I am also thankful for the many, many volunteers who helped make our gala a hit, and the many more who help at every stage of our festivities. I am thankful for our Board of Trustees and for those who have volunteered to participate in communities, and for the small group of learners who made our Emerging Leaders Initiative a success.

To everyone who does their part to make the everyday happen at CBT, I am especially thankful. We are an organization fueled by volunteers, and you make us run more smoothly.

As our season of thanksgiving approaches, I hope that we all seize every opportunity to give thanks to the many people in our lives who make it better.

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD !

Tishri 30—Heshvan 29 5777

November 2016

Election season is upon us. While I am tempted to make a correlation between the presidential race and the usual Thanksgiving theme of turkey, I will forego the opportunity. Instead, I will focus on something more relevant – making your voice heard. America was founded on certain principles and ideals. We are fortunate in this country to have the freedom to vote. Hopefully you are registered to vote and will exercise that right on November 8. Make your voice heard. Many citizens have fought and even made the ultimate

sacrifice to protect this and other rights, such as religious freedom, that we enjoy today. How apropos then that we also observe Veterans Day this month. Along the same lines, Congregation B’nai Tzedek was founded on certain principles and ideals. Namely that this is a congregation of the people and the voice of the congregation will be heard. In recent months there has been a more focused effort to share the agendas of board meetings so that those who wish can be present to speak on issues that matter to them. It is your right as a part of our community to have your voice heard. Be sure to take advantage of that right. If you are unable to attend the board meetings, reach out to me or any other board member at any time to ask questions or to share your concerns, ideas, thoughts, and comments. Another opportunity to hear about what is happening at CBT and to ask questions is our semi-annual congregational meeting. The fall meeting this year will be held Sunday, November 20 at 9:30 AM in the Social Hall. The agenda and a financial summary were mailed in October. In a month filled with an election, Veterans Day, a congregational meeting, and Thanksgiving, we are keenly aware of the things for which we are thankful. Be sure to take full advantage of the many opportunities to express thanks and to also make your voice heard. L’shalom, Sam

CANTORIAL CORNER

Celebrating 40 years of Jewish Music at CBT! This month, as a part of our 40th anniversary celebrations, we honor and celebrate forty years of music at CBT. From hosting concerts with Jewish musical artists like Julie Silver and Alan Goodis to performing innovative, exciting and original Purim spiels year after year, our congregation has a storied history of joyful singing!

On Friday night, November 18, honoring this musical tradition and the anniversary of our forty years together, we warmly welcome to the bimah a host of familiar voices including: Cantor

Linda Ecker, Cantor Natalie Young, and Cantor Lizzie Weiss. Each of these cantors has been an integral part of our musical tradition and we look forward to a truly meaningful and spiritually uplifting service.

On Saturday night, November 19 at 7:00 PM, we have another exciting 40th anniversary event. Congregation B’nai Tzedek will host a special concert entitled: “40 Years of Jewish Music!” We will welcome many talented cantors and cantorial soloists from the Cantors Assembly, Western Region for an evening of inspired song.

Truly, the coming months will be filled with music and celebration. I can’t wait to see everyone there!

B’Shirah,

Jenna Sagan

People across the United States will honor our military veterans on November 11, Veterans Day; and Brotherhood plans to participate.

At the Shabbat Service on November 11 we will present a $100 donation to Gary Hopkins for Fisher House, a facility near the Veterans Hospital in Long Beach which offers accommodations to friends and family visiting those in the hospital. Gary, a Brotherhood member, is on the board of Fisher House, a private, non-profit organization.

Brotherhood members approved the donation unanimously in September. Brotherhood is happy to be able to honor our veterans in this way.

Speaking of veterans, Al Davidson and his Brotherhood ushers, all veterans of that job, should be honored for their work on helping usher the Rosh Hashanah services at our own synagogue for the first time in

many years.

Al and his troops were also deployed to the Church of Latter-Day Saints for the Yom Kippur services. Thanks to Greg Halprin, who provided the water and apples for distribution to break the fast after the service October 12.

Speaking of grueling campaigns, thanks to CBT's general designer and master builder Mike Haber, who led the troops through five hours of erecting the expanded Sukkah, which covered the entire patio, on October 9.

Our “big guns” (height-wise), such as Al, Greg, Dave Zutz and Justin Wheatley were able to reach up and assemble the walls and ceiling while standing on the ground, while the shorter guys, such as Brotherhood President Bill Cable, Ian Leveton and Mike Kibel needed ladders to scale the wall and secure their objective (tying down wood and steel roofing with plastic bands.)

Other ground troops included Arnold Adler, Lari Davis, Stan Fink, Martin Heimlich (who marked his 82nd birthday in October), Haim Haimov and religious school parent Dave Candiotty.

Our apology to any troops who may be missing from the action above.

Our final veteran (veteran actor, that is) to be honored is the late Gene Wilder, a nice Jewish boy who starred in the movie “Young Frankenstein.”

That movie will be shown at the Brotherhood’s traditional December 24 movie night, 7:00 PM in the CBT Social Hall. Admission is free, bring your own snacks to share.

Shalom,

Arnold Adler Publicity chair

Have you wanted to sponsor an Oneg, but were not sure what to do or how much it would cost? It’s easy! You can be a sponsor for $270. This represents the actual cost of the Oneg. This covers food, setup, and cleanup, and your name will be listed as the Oneg sponsor in the Shabbat Announcement. CBT will handle all of the details. All you have to do is show up and enjoy! Furthermore, because you pay CBT, the $270 is tax deductible. It’s a win-win! You can also honor the memory of loved ones or celebrate simchas by making contributions to the Oneg Fund. This will help ensure funds are available to cover costs in the event an Oneg is unsponsored. See? It is easy. It all starts with a call to Yesi in the office to let her know when you want to sponsor. Why not call 714-963-4611 or email ([email protected]) today?
