Message From Rabbi
Revisiting Jewish Prayer, Tefillah
Why do so many Jews struggle with Tefillah? This is a crucial question to confront, espe-
cially when one of the major activities associated with the synagogue is services. Many people enjoy
the communal aspect of Tefillah, but don't relate at all to the prayers. They are in a foreign language,
literally and culturally. Our society doesn't use God language on the street and when it does it is often
by crazy people who seek to impose their beliefs on others. Another challenge is that many of us
learned the Hebrew prayers, but never explored their meaning. Tefillah thus became a rote activity --
something to get through at best, and ideally avoided. These negative associations with Tefillah not
only marginalize the relevance of the synagogue in general, but they cut off opportunities for individual
spiritual growth through Judaism.
While the experience of services is communal in nature, the mitzvah, sacred obligation, to pray is
incumbent on each person. I encourage you to look at Tefillah as a personal invitation to go on a jour-
ney. It is crucial to carve out times for self-care - this includes body and soul. Tefillah is an opportu-
nity to be, instead of to do. To reflect upon who you are, your relationships with family, friends, the
Jewish tradition, and God. Such a process is vital to spiritual growth.
In the first paragraph of the Shema, we say, "these words which I command you today shall be
upon your heart...when you lie down and when you rise up." Framing our day with prayer engages us in
questions about life's ultimate purpose. Reciting the Shema at home every morning and evening is a
powerful ritual to perform with your children. This is a five minute daily commitment that has the po-
tential for personal transformation.
Following the destruction of the Temple and the worship of God through offerings of animals
and produce, the rabbis established a new way of approaching God through the "offerings of the heart/
avodah shebalev." Like the original Temple service, they designated set times for prayer -- morning,
afternoon, and evening -- and arranged a specific structure for the service and text for specific prayers.
This structure was meant to serve as a guide for offering one's heart. Instead it serves as a barrier.
Why?
For many of us, the skills of Tefillah were not adequately taught. To understand the siddur,
many people were simply taught how to read Hebrew without examining the meaning of the prayers.
To learn the experience, many were taught to chant the prayers by rote without exploring the mystery of
approaching God. Yes, there is a holiness in simply maintaining the tradition of reciting the Hebrew
prayers, but this is hardly sufficient. We must reclaim the original purpose of Jewish prayer as an offer-
ing of the heart.
We must study the siddur's structure and meaning. What are the different parts of the service
and their purpose? How is the conception of our relationship to God different from other faith tradi-
tions? How do we relate to such conceptions of God? What are the opportunities for personal expres-
sion and innovation within the traditional service? By going through this process, we will develop a
sophisticated understanding of the siddur and ownership over the experience of prayer.

Message From Rabbi
There are many people who have embarked on this journey to revisit the meaning and role of Tefillah in their lives. Each
Wednesday morning a number of people attend an open class to explore and discuss the concepts in the structure and meaning of the
service and prayers. On Sunday afternoons, there is a beginning Hebrew class. On Wednesday evenings there is a Torah reading class.
Also, chavurot, study groups are forming to explore Tefillah and other Jewish topics in greater depth.
The size of our services during the week and on Shabbat is growing. Some people are showing up to be with their friends. Oth-
ers are also using this time as an opportunity for spiritual connection. We now consistently achieve a minyan every day, morning and
evening. The synagogue is beginning to flourish as the social and spiritual center of our Jewish lives, which it is meant to be.
I encourage you to revisit the role of Tefillah in your life. Take the first step by saying the Shema at home in the evening and
morning. Use Tefillah as an opportunity to ponder existential questions and expect a response. Come to a class to develop your prayer
literacy and delve deeper into the sophisticated responses that our tradition offers. This is how Tefillah can serve as a vital pathway to
reclaim our tradition.

Informative News from the Men’s Club & Sisterhood:
Dear Congregants,
Thank you all for attending our Sunday Breakfast following the last Sunday of the month morning
Minyan. We are about at 22-25 attendees and would always like to have more. The next 7 weeks we
have some important holidays that will impact the clubs and thus you.
October 27th there is no breakfast, but Minyan of course. The Jewish Food Festival is that day.
November 24th is the next date for our Sunday Minyan/Breakfast. That is the Sunday before
Thanksgiving. So, we all hope you can join us!
Also, we have the Hanukah Party on the 4th of December, after Minyan. More to come on that directly
from AAS, so this is an early notice. We can always use help for that.
Finally, we have the 29th of December, Minyan/Breakfast, and that is as you know is a few days before
New Years. We hope many of you would like the leisure grits/eggs, etc. breakfast with your friends!
On a final note, for those of you who want to be members, single dues are $36 for one club, and family
dues are $60 for both. Please arrange payment with the office, check, cash, or credit card. Our annual
meeting will be in April.
Finally, your clubs are up to you and your interests. We hope you display that interest with your dues.
Thank you!!!
For the Club,
Bob Schwartz

Community Chanukah Torch Run and Candle-Lighting on Wednesday, November 27 Because of the unique positioning of Thanksgiving to Hanukkah this year, it may be easier to celebrate our Jewish holiday
together since many people might be off work and school on “Erev” Thanksgiving—also the first night of Chanukah. So
give yourself a break from your Thanksgiving cooking and plan to do something extra-ordinary for you, your family and out
-of-town company to show thanks and pride in not only being an American, but being an American Jew. On Wednesday,
November 27 starting at 3:30PM in front of the Mickve Israel sanctuary, participants can pick up a goody bag of “gelt”, run
or cheer the relay gang, drive the course in caravan —stopping at each station for water and goodies-- including Agudath
Achim Synagogue by 4:20PM for candles and BBJ at 4:40PM for dreydels -- and end up at the JEA at 5PM for the commu-
nity hannukiah lighting.
This is a family friendly event and kids are encouraged to participate. Some people drive in their cars from location to loca-
tion, others may just cheer at one location (using signs, pom-poms or other items they bring or create) and still others may
walk/run some of it. There will be police protection along the route.
All stations will be collecting gently worn or new coats and blankets to donate and festivities come to a close by 5:15PM.
There will be some Chanukah-Thanksgiving craft activity at the JEA up until 5:15.
Volunteers (most “jobs” are 30 minutes time or less) needed:
To man the water and gelt table
to make signs, pom-poms and other items to cheer on our runners,
to decorate cars following the runners in caravan-style
to participate in the torch relay for all or part of the 4.8 mile course
to help organize and collect the coats and blankets for the “warm up winter” project
Representing the best of both worlds, Major Kenneth Ari Chanin, just back from his tour of duty in Afghanistan will be first
to carry our torch. Five others have signed up to hold the torch. If you want to run, hold or help, contact Carol Greenberg
[email protected] or 912-352-1238 And Happy Thanks-giv-ukkah!
You will not need to be running with the torch in order to participate. Cheer, celebrate or volunteer for the mitzvah project
from stations set up at the synagogues and the JEA. This is a nice way to show pride in our Jewishness, in our Sisterhoods,
our congregations, in the participants and bring a little attention to the great job of the Maccabees from our Bible days.
The schedule is:
Leave CMI at 3:30
AA 4:20 to 4:40
BBJ 4:40 to 5:00
JEA for lighting from 5:02 to 5:15 latest
Mitzvah Project Coat bins at each location
The next such coincidence of Chanukah and Thanksgiving will be in 79,043 C.E. (or 79,811 C.E. depending on how you
count the days), so don’t wait until the next time to sign up!
