MESSAGE

Mariann Danzer

Hello Everyone, What a good March General Volun-

teer Educational meeting and Lunch we had! Thank

you all for your willingness to attend, and surely I will

get to see you all plus a lot more of you at the Awards

Luncheon on April 8th, I have no idea what, our Direc-

tor has in store for us but I am sure it will be very

nice! Remember to RSVP.

I would like to focus on a really important subject,

and need your undivided attention. Our titles with

FRH is VOLUNTEERS, meaning: work for an or-

ganization without being paid, offer one’s service,

makes oneself available, sign up to promote goodness,

to do something especially for other people willingly

and without being assigned to do so. Now those are

just a few actual meanings I found in different dic-

tionaries, I’m sure you already knew the meanings; I

just wanted to share this with all of you.

Most of us have a chosen duty to perform but, when

there are special events, we’re all needed to make

them successful. I am asking for your participation

with as many events as you are available to help with.

I assure you I will be right there as your President

helping out also. If we work together as a team, just

think how much we can support our Director who

works very hard to see to it that all bases are covered,

as well as doing all her other duties, and how relieved

she’d be to have us all come forth so readily when she

calls on us for help. This is the busiest time of the year

for our Volunteer group and I have confidence we can

make a difference if more of us join in to help with

our special events.

CALL FOR RECIPES

Food for the Soul, 2nd Edition

Do you have a favorite recipe to submit

for the Cancer Center’s second edition?

After a successful publication of the

first edition of “Food for the Soul,” a

second edition of their community cookbook

is in the works. This cookbook is a

collection of recipes from people who have

been touched by cancer, either personally

or by someone special in their lives.

The cookbook includes recipes of all

types: healthy, decadent, hearty and warm,

cool and light, traditional, unusual, and

everything in-between.

You can submit as many recipes as you

like, but be aware that they may not be

able to print all of them. Forms are

available in the Cancer Center or you can

mail it to Kristin Kohler at the FRH

Cancer Center, 5629 Canyon View Drive,

Paradise CA 95969, or email to her at

[email protected].

Page 3: Volume 40 Issue 4, April 2014 - California Hospital Association · 2019. 11. 18. · Volume 40 Issue 4, April 2014 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE SERVICES Mariann Danzer Hello Everyone, What

How do we know that Spring is coming? Because that

is when we start looking for volunteers to help us with

MOW’s big fundraiser – Dining Out. This year the

date for Dining Out is May 15. Meals On Wheels has

only one fundraiser a year so we make it a big one.

Last year, we had 117 volunteers who helped raise

close to $14,000 for MOW. We need volunteers to

call all of the FRH volunteers from all areas to en-

courage them to help with our fundraiser. We need

volunteers to put up posters and banners all over

Paradise and Magalia. We need volunteers to be

posted at restaurants to answer questions about the

MOW program and thank diners for dining out for

Meals On Wheels. And more.

Here is something you can do now that will help with

Dining Out: Call the MOW office (877-8707) and let

them know if you cannot volunteer for Dining Out.

It will also help to call to let them know that you can

volunteer for Dining Out. This will help reduce the

number of phone calls we will need to make and

would be greatly appreciated.

We currently have some important positions to fill.

Please let Rebecca know if you or someone you know

would be interested in learning more about these:

Temporary Lunch Loader for Mondays

Temporary Tuesday H route, Thursday J route, and

Friday H route

Permanent Monday Meal Mover

Permanent Wednesday Meal Mover

Permanent Wednesday C Route driver

Permanent Thursday AM Office from 9 – 11:15am

We want to welcome back Dan Young who will be

taking on the E route on Tuesdays. Also, a big thank

you to Dorothea Myers who retired after delivering

MOW for a decade. We will miss her.

Go forth. Make meals. Deliver.

He had the hiccups.

Hello fellow volunteers and Happy Spring to you all. For those who are not familiar with what Hospice volunteers do, the program has office volunteers and patient care volunteers. This month I am going to put the focus of my column on our wonderful office volunteers. There are 12 including me. The others are: Nanci Albertson, Emmie Lou Bradley, Marge Eggers, Carole Jarred, Toni Keddy, Phyllis Knibbs, Inger Skarin, Dorothea Silva, Dotty Tinker, and our newest and most welcome two newbies, Cathy Stewart and Frances Simmons. The volunteers normally generate about 140-150 hours monthly to aid the staff at Hospice by answering phones, filing and coping work for patient's files, helping making charts for new patients, computer data entries, scan-ning, faxing. We have two special volun-teers, (they shall go nameless) who supply the staff with a chocolate candy jar and home baked goodies. One is looking for a milkman and God Bless that lucky man if she ever finds him. As I write this column today, the Hospice House is full with 6 patients, and the present census is at 60%. I have mentioned before, and especially in our board meetings when I give a small report, how fulfilled I am as a Hospice volunteer to be part of this special force that reaches out to each and every family in the final days of their loved ones life. In the Spring 2014 PARTNERS in Health publication, there is an excellent section on the Heart of Hospice. I close with words of our current volunteer President, Marian Danzer, VOLUNTEERS ROCK. Yes, you do, Hospice volunteers!!!!!!! God Bless you all.

THRIFT SHOP

& BOUTIQUE

Nancy Zastrow

This month lets take a look at all those household linens and domestic type items we receive. Our dedicated volunteers spend many hours checking all items to be sure that they are ready for sale. They take all the sheets and wrap them in tape as a bundle and write the size/etc. on that tape. They do all types of bedding items, drapes, curtains, towels, wash clothes, craft/sewing items and so much more. Makes me want to say they jump over tall buildings (ha ha). We truly appreciate this group and if you want to have some fun, join them! We at the Thrift Store and Boutique would like to take this time to honor one of our own who has decided to “retire” from active service after nearly 19 years. Doris Hagey has given countless hours to help everyone met the goals for the Thrift Shop and has been a true friend and working companion. We hope to see Doris at luncheons and other actives in the future. She is greatly missed at the store. The Thrift Store Focus Group (TSFG) met to go over new suggestions and found that with the new Retail Sales Lead and the additional paid staff hours we are sailing along quite smoothly. With the changes that are coming (see below), it was felt that all the suggestions that were made were being covered. The group felt that with Crystal handling the suggestions coming into the box, we would not be required to meet regularly. If there are suggestions that need us to convene the TSFG, we will do so. Have any suggestions? Add them to the box!!!! YOU ALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!! Our February net sales were $ 13,211 Our 2014 Year to date net sales $ 23,760. Our 2013 net to Hospice was $ 174,223. A man walks into a pub and simply orders a water. The bar tender looks at the man, grabs a shotgun,

and points it at the man’s face. The man says “Thank you” then gets up and walks out of the pub.

Why did he behave this way?

The answer is hidden somewhere in the newsletter. Did you see it?

SPECIAL EVENT UPDATE

I am hoping to see more names on the list for the Golf

Tournament 4/28; along with on the list to be Greeters

the Baker list for the Holiday Bake Sale 12/12. The

Christmas sale is going to be different this year and is

only going to be baked goods and Christmas items.

You can just imagine how many baked items we are

going to need to meet a proper supply and demand to

satisfy all the Hospital staffs sweet tooth’s. I believe if

you are willing to help us we really can have a

successful sale. Remember, your participation is

appreciated more then my Thank You’s can convey.

873-4041 to sign up or if you have questions. I’ll be

single Volunteer. A Thousand Thank You’s in

Happy Easter Blessings to each of you.

Director’s Message (continued from cover page)

that are donated to Hospice. It may seem that

we are really focused on the financial piece but

what we are more focused on is that we are able

to provide funds to a facility that is desperately

needed in our town. Our help enables Hospice

House to keep its doors open—and, that is not an

overstatement. While some of the Hospice House

patients have family and insurance that helps pay

for their care, they may be in need of a respite

stay. On the other hand, we may have patients

who have no family and are in need of a compas-

sionate place to receive their end of life care. As

many of you know, Hospice is not a “money maker”

and they rely heavily on donations and fundraisers

(such as the Angel program and the Light up a Life

event). It is because of the work that you all do

at the Thrift Shop that we are able to serve the

patients of Hospice.

We will be hosting a scrub sale fundraiser on Mon-

day, April 14th and are in need of three volunteers

(one per shift) to process payroll deduction pur-

chases. If you are available from 7am-11am,

11am-4pm or 4-8pm; please let me know.

27th Annual golf Scramble The date is April 28, 2014

There is still time to sign up to help with this fun project, and to be there to watch the $1,000.00 ball drop! Tickets

are $5.00 for each ball and can be purchased in the Gift Shop located in the main lobby of the hospital. Give me a

call if you would like to help. Sid Ryder, 873-2489
