It was at one of these nite spots where Bob Martin, Director of Publicity and Promotion for Columbia Records of Canada, became aware of the Hutch- inson potential as a recording artist. The best that Columbia had to offer was laid on for Ray. DON'T THINK that I wasn't angry about being pre-empted bya bunch of awards in last week's edition...because I was,and I also registered a complaint to the editor about thenumber of ads and the lack of news, but he explained to methat it was all in a good cause (staying in business) and I

had to agree. FURTHERMORE!!! This is a RESPONSIBLEPUBLICATION, and that's more than I can say for some ofthe rags that have been coming across my desk lately!! Justany old semi professional part time writers are writing aboutthe music business. After a fast bum's rush tour of a U.S.recording studio, suddenly you gain power!!! knowledge!!!and the hell with the facts. I understand that next he'll writeup a tour of India. He hasn't been there! but I swore that I

wouldn't mention a word about this factless article in mycolumn, or the idiot's name so I won't utter a word. (Ed:

Good! I notice that you didn't even refer to it!!!) I won't even refer to it!!!...atALL!!! Except to say it's a good thing the BBG has problems of their own!!(Ed: Don't even refer to it!!!) I won't even give it a mention!! (Ed: Don't!!)

He shouldn't even be working for such a fine radio station. Or for such a finepaper!!! (Ed: Don't refer to it!!!) What was he doing in Detroit anyway? He hasno right to be uninformed!!

I burned my copy, you know, (Ed: NO!!!) in an ashtray. I'm going to spreadthe ashes around Paul White's office (Ed: Good idea) and save some for BobMartin's office. (Ed: Real ceremonial -like) I've written a few words that I'dlike to read during the scattering!!! I haven't been this mad since....since....since Tiger a Go Go!!!

Nobody reads it you know!!! It probably ended up in the bottom of bird cages!!(Ed: And birds don't read!!!) and birds don't read!!! You know what they'll do toit!!! (Ed: I know they won't read it!!!)

I'm glad I write a responsible column. I get all the facts!!! (Ed: We're proudof you) I check things out!!! It's my duty to my readers. (Ed: Right!!!) Even if"Shakin' All Over" didn't win "Best Produced Disc"!! I was wrong and I admitit!!! (Ed: Good girl!!!) The pen is mightier than the sword!!!

Birds wouldn't read it would they? (Ed: I don't think so!!!)

CKY Top 40 Chart To

Stay in WinnipegWinnipeg: Bill Grogan, PD at CKY

dismisses the suggestion that theirchart was to shortly to be disconti-nued as "wishful thinking on thepart of some irresponsible parties".CKY has, as a matter of fact, broughtout a more expensive chart with theintroduction of colour. More em-phasis is to be placed on Canadianproduct in the coming year. At pre-

sent, The Jury, Shondels and BobbyKris are getting good exposure atthis Winnipeg station. CanadianChallenge gives an added boost toCanadian product each Sunday after-noon. New releases are pittedagainst the champion with listenerparticipation. Dean Scott rocks dailyfrom 6-9 PM with J. Robt. Wood from9 -MN. Bill Grogan would like towager a full page advertisement inRPM at the end of 1966. To be paidfor by CKY if their chart is with-drawn and if otherwise to be paidfor by Elvira Capreese.

It's been a longtime since I'veseen my old friend,SAMMY DAVISJR., but as I

watched his debuton his own networktelevision show(NBC-TV) a coupleof weeks ago, itwas as though I

was sitting besidehim. Those whohave read his book,"Yes I Can"

should understand the tremendous, indescribably joy, Sammy feels asthe first Negro performer to have hisown network weekly TV show. Assomebody who has known him throughthe years, I realize the true meaningof the words, "a dream come true".I would not want to attempt to ex-press the thoughts that are runningthrough Sammy s mind at this timeas I am not foolish enough to be-lieve that I know the inner feelingsof a very complicated man. However,"humility" need not be worn on aperson's sleeve in order to makeknown his feelings of gratitude to-wards a public that is grateful forthe opportunity being affordedSAMMY DAVIS JR. Only a handful ofpeople know that Sammy's words ofpraise and encouragement played animportant part in the career ofBOBBY DARIN. That story maysomeday be told, but if and when itis, it will probably be by Bobby asthere are some things a man does forwhich he asks no credit be given.

We received a belated Christmasgreeting from DUKE ELLINGTON.Instead of sending out cards, theDuke sent out programs to his "AConcert Of Sacred Music" whichtook place in New York and SanFrancisco.

Heard from LOU CHRISTIE whoarrived in New York this week tostart working with CHARLIE CA-LELLO on his next single sessionand an LP, which no doubt will beentitled "Lightnin' Strikes".

SHAWN ELLIOTT called me afterreturning from South America andtold me he would be recording a newsingle and also a new LP.

Waiting to break big on the chartsare "When Liking Turns To Loving"by RONNIE DOVE and "Working MyWay Back To You" by that littleknown group THE FOUR SEASONS.

The FRANKIE VALLI record"(You're Gonna) Hurt Yourself" isan out and out smash in New Yorkand is breaking fast in other areas.

RAMSEY LEWIS' "Hard Day'sNight" should follow in the footstepsof his other giant hits.

COLUMBIA: AnEnglish recordcalled "OrdinaryGuy" by Chip Fishergets its North Ameri-can airing in Canadafirst. The Columbiapeople have rushedthis release acrossthe country with thehopes that Canadacould be a soundingboard for this smashhit. Also from Co-

lumbia comes a new Broadway re-lease "The Syndicate" by JohnBarry from the new musical "Pas-

sion Flower Hotel". CanadiansBobby Kris and the Winnipeg basedShondels are making good strides upthe charts across Canada.

SPARTON: "Mac Wiseman Sings -At The Toronto Horseshoe Club" isthe newest in country releases fromthe Sparton people. Mac calls thisLP his "Salute to Canada" and usedsome of Canada's top country musi-cians on the session including RonMcMunn, Lloyd Grant, Don O'Neil,Joe Brown and the late Ward Allen. This was the last recording sessionin which Ward participated. Nationalchart action is the order for the new-est by Ray Charles "Crying Time".
