West Coast Collectors Creating Stir In Eastern Canada

AQDe

New Syndrome's hottest tal-ent, The Collectors, are beginning toshow some action on the EasternCanadian charts. Their "Looking AtA Baby" has climbed up to No. 19on the CHUM chart, so it must be agood record. As a matter of fact I

know it's a class "A" single. Giveit a listen.

You know, I've been listen-ing to "the rock show of the yeomen"for the past couple of months andhave never expressed an opinion, oneway or another. Well, they finally gotto me. Maybe I was taking theirsound for granted, but really I guessHarry Finegold, their manager, has aknack for building an image around

his people. The Yeomen have to bethe hardest working and most con-scientious group on the Toronto scene. They can start rehearsing at 1 PM gothrough to 7 PM, break for supper andhit the stage for the evening showdisplaying all the excitement andfreshness that has made them thetalk of the music profession. I don'tthink I've seen the group without abig welcome smile and from the re-sponse of the audience, it's muchappreciated.

Remember we mentioned aVancouver group name of Three ToOne? Well, they moved into the Tor-onto area and just disappeared. Butthey're back in the news. They play-ed the Orillia scene a couple ofweeks ago and set one of the localDJs to talking about how great theywere. The group is made up of threeguys and a girl drummer.

The folks up Kitchener wayare proud of a local group who aremaking quite a name for themselvesin the recording field. They're known

Some Canadian groups maybe facing problems in the future. This is a result of having namessimilar to U.S. acts. Here's a list ofU.S. recording bands that have acounterpart in Canada: The Check-mates Ltd., The Fifth Dimension, TheOther Four, The Kingbees, The Live-ly Set, The Lords Of London, TheScoundrels, The Unknowns, Jamieand The Jury, and December's Chil-ren.

The Mandala (formerly TheFive Rogues), The Dickens (fcrrnerlyThe Knack), and The Passing fancy(formerly The Dimensions) ran acrossthis situation which forced them toadopt new names.

The Robbs were unique whenit came to selecting a name. Thegroup is made up of four brothers andthey simply chose their surname tocarry them to fame. They've madeseveral appearances on TV's "WhereThe Action Is", and just released"Rapid Transit" on Mercury Records. The radio stations have been gettingmany requests for this "hot" one.

The Sparrow is enlighteningmany of San Francisco's hippies whocome out en masse to get a glimpseof this Canadian group.///The DailyFlash, a local group, took Ian andSy iv la's "French Girl'' off the duo'salbum and have put it out as a singleon the newly formed UN I label.///Little Caesar and The Consuls havebeen on many labels in the past sevenyears. Their name has appeared onArc, Columbia, Tamarac, Red Leafand now they're back on Columbia. Iwonder what's next for the SloopyGang? I hope their newie is releasedin the states.

A star-studded show will beheld at the Hollywood Bowl at theend of the month. Headlining theshow will be The Supremes. Others

ANDREW A. MELZER

by

Francine DrubickAndrew A. Melzer is a name you may

soon be hearing of, for he owns Hit BoundMusic Ltd., which will be publishing musicand producing records. Andrew is one of theyoungest men I know who has such an import-ant position. He is only 21 years of age andhas a good musical background. Would youbelieve ten years of violin, composing andelectronic music under Dr. Dolan at the RoyalConservatory of music and four years of har-mony and composition?

Andrew writes folk, jazz, and rhythmand blues. Some of his songs may soon berecorded by several famous U.S. recordingartists.

The Andrew Melzer determinationshows through with his release of a new ar-rangement of Bobby Gimby's "Canada" asperformed by the Department Of Public Works. One side is English, the other French. Dis-tribution is handled by Spartan Records OfCanada.

It's been reported that Bobby Gimbythinks this rock arrangement is excellent.Comparing this version, which was arrangedby Brian Ahern and Ben McPeek's arrangement,I find I like both arrangements although I feel

the effort by the Department Of Public Worksis more commercial.

As far as songwriting is concerned,Andrew's ballads impress me the most and I'dlike to see someone like Andy Williams singthem.

Andrews advice to the Canadian musicindustry is "instead of fighting and bickering,we should all stick together and show outsid-ers the abundance of Canadian talent".

Andrew Melzer is going places in thismusic industry and I for one am proud andhappy that we have such great talent.

MEET LIZA TAANOne of the newest recording artists on

the Montreal scene is a pretty young gal namedLiza Taan. From out of the folk-rock bagshe's picked a couple of groovy songs writtenand produced by Martin Martin, who's nostranger to the Canadian music scene himself.Liza's disc is tagged "Simon, Simon" and "NoOne 'Cept Me". (RCA 57.3422).

Liza did a lot of singing in the Torontoand New York Villages before they turnedfolk-rock. She now spends most of her time inMontreal. Not to be left behind the times. Lizais now rehearsing with a backing group whichshe has just formed.

For the next couple of months Lizaplans to stay in the Montreal area, playingsuch places as the New Penelope, The DeMilo Room, and the Cafe Andre. In May, thesinger and her group plan to invade the NewYork Village, where dates are now beingarranged.

MEL McCORMACK LIZA TAAN

will include Johnny Rivers, TheBuffalo Springfield, The Seeds, TheFifth Dimension and Brenda Holloway(the "Operator, Operator" girl). Thebest part is that tickets are only 93q.

A new Cheetah opened in LosAngeles this week, complete withpsychedelic lights. This is the fourthone in the United States. One of theopening acts featured Eric Burdonand The Animals, who, incidentally, have caused many screaming farriots (Ottawa). It's a good thing thestage is seven feet above floor level.

The Turtles released theirnew album anmed of ter their hit sing-le, "Happy Together".///The Yard -birds "Greatest Hits" album containssuch golden hits as "Shape OfThings", "I'm A Man", and "ForYour Love".

I am anxiously awaiting thearrival of The Paupers. They mightbe poor now but when their super -colossal sound is heard here theymay head home called "The RichKids"

As well as being a record, the paidcommercial featuring this song has beenplugged thousands of times on radio stationsacross Canada. This record just goes to provethat a Government can have a HIT on the

first try, while record companies have to try alittle harder. It is number one and the figUreto date is approximately 200,000 records. Isthis a record record?SHIP OF DREAMSQuiet Jungle -Yorkville -45005This one is a sleeper. It has had a great dealof air play in the past two months, but hasn'tbeen able to quite make it to the top. Thesound is interesting and might even hedge onbeing a bit psychedelic. Buy and try on myword. I know you'll like it.HALF PAST MIDNIGHTStaccatos -Capitol -72453Canada's Top Group as chosen by the RPMreaders has another number 1 winner. Thisone is another great by the group that willbreakthrough for Canada in the world market. The Staccatos are RECORDED IN CANADA.They write their own and their talent is genuine. It isn't partly imported. After you'veplayed it a lot, wear it on your lapel.LET'S RUN AWAYThe Magic Cycle -Red Leaf -633The group claim they recorded this one fortheir album as a tribute to the Staccatos. Thecut came out so good, that they chose it fortheir initial record debut, and they haven'tbeen wrong. The disc in two weeks has already rated a chart position. Flip was writtenby the group and is getting airplay.SEVENTH SAINTMel West & The Meteors -Red Leaf -630A wholly Canadian production from the west.Recorded in Regina, this is the third disc bythis group and turned into a sleeper that mightindicate that the next release will be a winner. The west come up with hits too. Arc's Richard Dinsmore listsSusan Taylor's "Promises" as doingexceptionally well along with one ofArc's newest acquisitions, TeakWood and his release of "See MyGirl".

L.S. Palmer, owner of TheRecord Bar, in Whitby, Ont., givestop sales billing to Herman's "Hush"which is closely followed by "ForWhat It's Worth" and "Happy To-gether". Yellow Balloon and MitchRyder are also up among the winners.Top selling albums belong to TheMonkees, Peter & Gordon, BuckOwens and "Sound Of Music".

Lawrence Lee, who operatesLee's Radio & TV in Wadena, Sask.,has Pet Clark' s "Song" at the topof the heap with "Morningtown Ride"riding close behind. The Sinatrasare also big in Wadena with their"Stupid". Nancy has one up on Dadwith her "Love Eyes" showing goodsales. Ian & Sylvia have been havinga run of success as well. Lee's week-ly album draw is still in effect andcreating much attention.

Gail Hemingway, the managerof the Crossroads record bar in Wil-lowdale, Ont., puts the Sinatras ontop with "I'm A Man" and "HappyJack" riding herd. The Beatles andHollies are still looking good. "Look-ing At A Baby", the Vancouver entryof The Collectors is moving up withthe pack. One of the strongest of thenewest entries is "My Back Pages"by The Byrds. Top sellers in the al-bum field are The Monkees, Herman,Lovin' Spoonful, The Byrds and TheMamas & Papas.

David Doucette, of LondonRecords reports Lesley Gore's "Cali-fornia Nights" and "Detroit City" byTom Jones as top sellers. Whistling

Jack Smith, Engelbert Humperdinckand The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band areall vying for top position. New Cana-dian releases getting action are: TonyRoman's "Shadows On A Foggy Day"and "Man About Town" by The Rafts -men III.

Isobel Stokes from Sudbury'sWoolco, reports The Sinatras andTurtles keeping pace with each other.Peter & Gordon's "Tea" and TheBuckingham's "Lawdy Miss Clawdy"are both moving well. The Easybeatsare leading the pack of newcomerswith their "Friday On My Mind". TheMonkees are still top dog as far asalbums are concerned. Their next al-bum should be out by mid -May. TomJones and Nancy Sinatra are alsochalking up good sales.

The gal who looks after therecords at the Prince George Electricbar, Ritva Karajoaja, agrees with themajority of the bars, The Sinatrasare the big item with their "Somethin'Stupid", The Royal Guardsmen, PetClark, Tom Jones and Five Ameri-cans all look good. Gord Lightfootand Ian Sylvia are strong Canadianitems. Eddy Arnold and Roger Millerare capturing the imagination of thepop buyer with their new releases.

With the James Bond thriller"Casino Royale" getting nationalexposure it's only natural that HerbAlpert & The Tijuana Brass wouldreap the benefit with their A&M re-lease, same title. Most stationsacross the nation are giving it a"pick". Quality's Harold Winslowadvises that ACTA, the new sub-sidof Dot is creating plenty of interestwith their release of "I Don't ThinkYou Know Me" and "Give Two YoungLovers A Chance" by The AmericanBreed.

THE MERCEY BROS.

Top Country Instrumental

Vocal Group (RPM Awards)

The Mercey Bros are, believe it or not, brothers, and they were voted Canada's "TopVocal Country Instrumental Group" for 1966,and RPM has the ballots to prove it, just incase you were wondering.

Now, about these brothers from Hanover. There's Larry, who plays lead guitar, Royis the bass player and Lloyd is on drums. That makes one big noisy house on a practicenight, but that's what made them so great, practice and practice. It wasn't all that hardwork since the Mercey Bros happen to likewhat they're doing.

It all happened for Larry when he wasfifteen and he made his first public appearanceon CKNX in Wingham and three months laterjoined the CKNX "Barn Dance" as a regular.Larry made his first TV appearance in Juneof 1956.

Just about this time Ray was begin-ning to feel his oats and wanted to crash thecountry scene, so he teamed up with bigbrother Larry and all of a sudden, there hewas , playing in front of an audience on"Western Round -up" a CKNX TV production. That was it. They got so much sawdust in theirveins that they decided to form a five piececountry dance band and hit the road.

In 1960 Larry and Ray entered the"Talent Caravan Show" on CBC-TV and tooksecond prize for Canada which resulted inthem appearing on "Country Hoedown", "RedRiver Jamboree" and "The Don Messer Show".

Lloyd wasn't doing too much, justhelping out a bit when his brothers neededhim, but he was an important part of theirrecording session which took place in Nash-ville and sent the brothers up the charts inCanada with their Columbia single "WhistleOn The River". They found that with this re-lease they were getting more action on theclub circuit and are set for several televisionappearances.

"Whistle" is still going strong forthem but their latest release "Uncle Tom"has been more widely accepted and is evenshowing up on several pop charts.

The Mercey Bros are getting set fora U.S. release and are in a great position tobring Canada's country artists to the attentionof the world.

Just a gas of an album. You reallyshouldn't need much more thanthe name of the artists to con-vince you that this album hasthose loveable sounds that hitsare made of. Peaches & Herb.Who else? This album containstheir big one "Let's Fall In Love"and others that create a "loveyour gal", "love your guy","love your cat" and "love yourdog" or anything else that hap-pens to be in lovin' reach, feelin'.They're great as partners butjust as great as single-os. DearPeaches does a lonely bit with"Time After Time" that almosttears your heart out, and whenHerb "Falls In Love", by him-self, which is hard to do, well, just TOO much.DATE - 3004

Glen Campbell first came to theattention of Canadians when heappeared with the Beach Boys asa replacement, and promptly up-staged the famous surfers. Hedidn't do it intentionally but hejust has that friendly homespunway about him that kinda gets toyou, which brings us to this al-bum. It's homespun and as amatter of fact it's pretty darncountry, and a little bit of countrypickin' never hurt anyone. So, ifyou got a date and you want tocurl yourself around one of thesincerest sounding albums on themarket, give Glen a try. You mayeven find yourself with a pop -country hit on your hands with"Burning Bridges".

Ever feel like taking a moviehome? Well, here's your chance. It's not the greatest album everproduced but it's one of the mostinteresting. After all, it was pro-duced by Mike Curb for SidewalkProductions, and there must be astory there, somewhere. Anywaylook what you have, all on onealbum. There's The Standellsand you know who they are. Theydo a couple of numbers, the title,"Riot" and "Get Away FromHere". The group I really digis The Mom's Boys. Unfortunatelythey only do one number. It'scalled "Children In The Night".If you haven't seen the movieyet, hang on. It's probably sched-uled for television in 1970.

THE RAINVILLESGuess who I spotted hob-

nobbing with the famous Saul Holiff?None other than "Canada's MusicIndustry Man Of The Year" (RPMAwards), Stan Klees. I didn't thinkcountry was his bag.

Speaking of Saul Holiff, Ra-dio station CKSL, in London, in as-sociation with Holiff, will presentSonny James and The Southern Gentle-men at The Gardens on Thursday,April 20. He'll have an all star line-up on the show with James, includ-Debbie Lori Kaye, Stonewall Jackson,The Whippoorwills and Nat Stuckey.

Still speaking of Saul Holiff,my he must be important, get ready toget excited. I was lucky enough tohear a rough cut of Debbie's next re-lease and it's so exciting that it'sjust hard to believe that such greattalent could be contained in thisfive foot bombshell. Tommy Hunter isalso going to do something about hisCBC image. He's cut a session thatbrings him right out of his CBCshell. If you were of the opinion thatTommy Hunter couldn't belt (for wantof a better term) out a song, then justwait `til you hear his Columbia sin-gle. Even the "Country Music Hall"people will be impressedWHERE THE COUNTRY FOLK ARE:Apr 24 - 29The Wilburn Bros Show - Horseshoe - TorontoApr 26 - May 6Diane Leigh - 401 Club - Kingston

DO YOU BELIEVE.....thatgroup recording activity in the Toron-to area could come to a virtualSTANDSTILL? That will give groupsoutside the LOCAL Toronto area anadvantage in the fight for hits. WHATdo THESE guidelines mean???///Theexpression "peas in a pod" meanssomething to everybody but TWO"brothers" that CLAIM they don'tlike the "smell" of things, but BIG"brother" won't do anything abouthis FRIENDS friends and associates.(Ed: Believe It or not, I have actuallyfigured that one out. RIGHT!!!)///Canadian broadcasters threw discre-tion to the winds recently when theyGOT TOGETHER (for a change) andTIED ONE ON!!!///IT WILL BE IN-TERESTING to see what the ratio ofQuebec GROUPS against WESTERNgroups will be at Expo. There is amurmur that "blood is thicker thanwater" and an easily arranged alter-nate date might have assured theappearance of a very top top group atExpo. Do I smell a scandal?????///Is it true that the Canadian musicindustry isn't BIG enough to have aDirectory? I'm only asking!! (Note toEd: Delete if you wish.) (Ed: Be myguest. Freedom of the press....youknow!!!)///The very very popular RPM100 chart may be made available tocertain radio stations across Canada

on an exclusive arrangement. Therun was recently doubled but the sta-tion tie-ins will quadruple the doubledrun. The format has changed, andfurther changes .are YET to come.Watch this little giant. It sells 100records at a time and is pretty uniquein the world, according to one U.S.record company.///Watch for one ofCanada's top recording groups to runaway on an all expense paid record-ing trip to Hollywood.///From Van-couver comes word that we shouldwatch (censored) closely. The wordcomes from an ex -employee, so itmight be the inside poop.///In Mon-treal the winning team of Hanky Pan-ky are playing overtime to createHAVOC. Visitors to Expo will onlyhear less than 2% Canadian content(as I write this) from the station thatcharts and plays the popular music. It will make the visitors feel at homenot to hear any domestic product play-ed. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!///Intemal strifeat RPM. E.I.E.I.O. MacDonald wasrecently released from the staff ofRPM when it became known that shewas planning to join up with a fewother POWERS to throw dances forprofit through the summer. It wouldbe highly unethical for an RPM stafferto use the power of these publicationsfor personal gain. Old Ed: caught thisone in time and RPM will continue tobe COMPLETELY ETHICAL.///Iwill no longer be available to M.C.dances for a percentage of the gate.Forthwith you will have to hire me ata set fee and I will not be able tooffer you any FREE PLUGS in RPM.This new ETHICAL image of RPMwill certainly be a blow to the RPMstaffers (who made most of theirmoney on gigs and wrote for RPM onlyas a part time job) but if it makes uslead the way, we have to bow to whatis ethical. My price continues to be$1000 a gig ( plus expenses) andarrangements can be made throughyour local friendly bookie. Rememberyou are booking ME ElviraCapreese. I can offer you NO radiostation, NO group underscale, NOplugs in a publication. JUSTTALENTED ENTERTAINING AM!'(Ed: THAT'S a FIRSTH"")
