THE SPIRE

In II Timothy four, as Paul is in prison, possibly soon to lose his life for his faith, he writes Timothy to “do your best to come before winter.”

As one reads these words they seem to have a sense of poignancy about them. One senses that maybe Timothy would have warm clothing for Paul and that Paul was concerned about Timothy traveling in the winter.

In each case one senses the coldness of winter, and the struggles it can bring.

Recently, after experiencing a rather mild winter, the snow of winter has come and we have experienced its coldness.

However, as cold as winter can become, even colder yet, can be the winter seasons of life that can descend upon our souls.

As we live in a fallen world that is not all that God intended it to be, we may experience times of struggles, discouragement, and loss. We may encounter poor health, the discouragement of an unrealized dream, or possibly the loss of a loved one, and as we do it may seem as though winter has come to our lives.

Yet, the good news is that just as spring follows winter in the year, and new life and warmth comes, God can bring springtime to our souls and give us hope and peace again. He can be at work helping us, encouraging us, and comforting us. He can be restoring our souls, so that even in the winter of our discontent, we can sense the coming of spring and new life.

Thus, in the winter seasons of life, God can bring a new springtime of healing, hope and peace.

As we trust in Jesus, may we trust in him to minister to us in the winter of our lives, and bring warmth to our souls.

God bless,

Pastor Mark
