A Note from the Superintendent

ONE MORE WEEK FOR THE CHOCOLATE SALE

NVMI continues a critically important fund raiser through December 8. Students are invited to

sell World’s Finest Chocolate. They MAY NOT sell on the NVMI/SVHS campus, but they may

sell at home and in the community. There are great prizes available. Students must have parent permission to

sell. Please consider helping us sell chocolate. Complete the parent permission form, and your child will pick

up the chocolate from Dr. Ryan’s office window AFTER SCHOOL from 3:35-4:45 every day. Please

remember --- students may not sell on the SVHS Campus at any time. They should turn in their monies to the

collection point at the INSPECTION GATE each morning. Students should NOT hold money on their person

on campus; that’s why we have the inspection gate collection point in operation each morning from 0645-0745.

ALSO NOTE: the last day to get SCRATCHERS for turning in money is Monday, December 7 at 0745 at the

inspection gate. No scratchers are given out after that time.

FINAL EXAMS ARE COMING NVMI will have semester final exams the week before we go to Winter Break. Final exams are cumulative tests of knowledge students should have learned the entire 18 weeks of the semester. Exams count as 20% of a student’s semester grade, so it is important students prepare well for those exams. Exam periods are 100 minute blocks and on those days, dismissal is at NOON. Buses will depart at 1210 on those days; so parents and students should plan ahead. TUESDAY DECEMBER 15 – Exams periods 1 and 2; 12:00 dismissal

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 16 – Exams periods 3 and 4; 12:00 dismissal

PREPARE FOR FINAL EXAMS

It is important to eat a good breakfast each day, ESPECIALLY when taking such important exams.

Get a good night’s rest the night before each exam. I recommend AT LEAST NINE HOURS of sleep each

evening.

Don’t wait until the last minute to study for exams. All teachers provide some form of study guide for

exams. Be sure to take advantage of those study guides and study GRADUALLY rather than all at the

last minute.

CADET LEADER MEETING

A very important meeting for cadet leaders will take place Tuesday, December 15, from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Lunch will be provided.

All cadets with the rank of C/CPL or higher are expected to attend this important meeting with the Superintendent. Please plan ahead.

NVMI is very pleased to start offering COLLEGE classes from Mission College on our campus. The first of

these will be Psychology 101, offered for five weeks from January 4 – February 4, 2016 (Monday through

Thursday) from 3:45-6:15. Classes are COMPLETELY FREE, including no fee for the textbook. All high

school students at NVMI (and NVMI parents) are welcome to take the class. To sign up, please contact Ms.

Tejada a [email protected]. Beginning in February, we will offer Earth Science and Art History courses –

again FREE OF CHARGE. Stay tuned for details about those courses. This is an amazing opportunity for our

students. Students who are particularly hard working over the next couple of years can actually GRADUATE

FROM NVMI HIGH SCHOOL WITH AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE!

SCHOOL PHONES We are aware of the challenges sometimes faced when trying to call the school office.

Please realize we do not have a physical phone in the main office other than cell phones.

So when people are calling the school number, it is ringing on multiple cell phones

simultaneously. If you ever have difficulty reaching us, please simply call my cell phone

directly at 323-217-4481 and even if I do not answer, I promise I will return the phone call

as soon as humanly possible. It is also a good idea to try to email school staff if you have

questions.

DONATIONS: NVMI needs your help to offset a budget deficit. Specifically, we need donations of both CASH and various items. Here are some things to consider.

1. NVMI provides more than $250 of free uniform items to each child each year. You would normally

have to pay for school clothes for your child, so if you are able to do so, please give us all or a portion

of that $250 in a donation to help our budget.

2. NVMI provides an amazing and very robust counseling staff ratio most schools do not provide. Please

consider donating cash to help pay for our counselors!

3. EVERY NVMI child participates in athletics in various forms, including intramurals and interscholastic.

NVMI pays more than $77,000 a year for our athletic program. Please consider donating to help with

those costs.

4. WE PAY ABOUT $200 a week in Xerox paper alone! We need donations of cases of white 8.5X11 inch

copy paper. Literally, more than 5000 reams or 25,000,000 sheets of paper are used by NVMI in a

year. If you are at Staples or Office Depot or Walmart or Target and can pick up copy paper, please do

so and bring it to the main office right away.

5. We also need donations of other office supplies:

6. IF YOUR CHILD TAKES THE BUS: NVMI is paying over $250,000 a year for free bus transportation. If you are able to donate to help cover those costs, please send some cash to help with those expenses.

All donations are tax deductible and we will give you a tax donation letter. Bring items (with receipts so we know how much to give you credit for) or cash to the main office in an envelope with your name, child’s name, student ID#, grade, and company. We will give you a tax donation receipt within two business days of turning in the items or cash.
