Thomas said: “It made all the colours move like magic.”Shamsa said: “We mixed the colours with the stick and it was so different.”Ellie said: “When the colours didn’t come back we had to use more food colouring.”Lia “I liked it when blue food colouring was put on the salts.”

Y12 BIOLOGY STUDENTS WORK ALONGSIDE FS1FS1 has been transforming the youngest children in our school into budding scientists this week. As part of the whole school Science Week, the children have been experimenting with all sorts of different things. The favourites have been Chromatography (have a look on Youtube if you would like to do this at home), they have been smelling and tasting lemon, mustard, mint leaves, spices and shampoo (no tasting) and then creating a smelly potion. The children have watched water turn to ice and then melt back into water and finally evaporate. We have also touched bread with dirty hands, washed hands and hands with gloves to see what will happen in a few days’ time. The highlight of the week was having Mrs Robinson’s Grade 12 Science pupils coming down to FS1 to conduct two different experiments, one using diffusion with milk and food colouring and one showing crystallization. During the milk experiment Charlie in Mrs Wel’s class was very excited and said “Wow, that’s amazing!”. There were also many “Oooh’s” and “Ahhh’s” heard.

In FS2 this week we have been tasting different Arabic Foods and learning all about the culture of Abu Dhabi. Those of us who were brave enough to try it thought the camel milk was delicious. We were interested to see dates growing on the palm trees around our school after trying some in our classrooms. The favourite food sampled for most of us was Arabic bread and humous. As part of Science Week we have had great fun doing floating and sinking experiments. We then chose materials which would float to make our own Dhow boats like the ones we saw at the Heritage Museum.

FANTASTIC FLOATS FOR YASALAM PARADE

Over the past few weeks our parent volunteers have been busy creating our fantastic floats for Yasalam. This year the Pre Prep will be representing the Red Bull Racing Team and the Mercedes Racing Team as part of the annual opening of the Yasalam festival along the Corniche. On Thursday 19th November, children and teachers from the school will be parading along the Corniche with their floats to compete for a place as the best float in the competition. The results will be shared next week.

Yet another stimulating week in Year 2. It all began with decorative preparations for National Day when we held an Art Day last Thursday. Huge UAE flags with individual photos of all the pupils in Year 2 will soon be on display along with flags decorated with the outline of the hands of all the children. There are also stencils and silhouettes of typical local scenes such as camels and falcons. Also, Year 2 made some very attractive hearts, decorated in the four national colours of black, white, red and green.

This week there have been daily Science Experiments as part of the Brighton College Science Week. In Year 2 we have learnt how to clean our hands thoroughly, not only to remove the dirt

that we can see, but also the germs that we cannot see! In addition, we have witnessed the effect of Mentos sweets when put into a bottle of fizzy coca cola and talked about the chemical reaction taking place. Talking of chemical reactions, using simple home ingredients of cornflour and water we made a very sticky ‘goo’. Also, using baking powder and vinegar we have made exploding volcanoes, again from the chemical reaction of these everyday ingredients! Finally, we have made regular visits outside to a sunny spot to track the movements of shadows and understand the rotation of our planet earth and how this knowledge helps us to tell the time.

YEAR 2 EXPLODES!
