The Pennsylvania’s Civil War exhibit, presented by Mylan, explores Pittsburgh’srole as the “Arsenal of the Union” and the significant contributions that Western Pennsylvanians had on the war, both on the battlefield and on the home front.

The exhibit helps bring to life the personal stories of those impacted during the four-year war through more than 150 artifacts, including items on loan from the Smithsonian Institution, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, the National Civil War Museum, and the Kenneth Turner Collection, along with rare archival images, six life-like museum figures, and immersive settings.

Exhibit highlights include exact replicas of the largest and smallest cannons used during the Civil War – a massive 26-foot-long, 90-ton smoothbore 1864 Rodman Cannon created at the Fort Pitt Foundry and a comparatively pint-sized 575-pound 1859 Mountain Howitzer gun.

Six life-like museum figures bring a face to the conflict, including Martin Delany, a Pittsburgh abolitionist and the highest ranking African American in the Civil War; Kate McBride, a young worker at the Allegheny Arsenal; Jacob Funk, a corporal from Fayette Co. who helped to save the regimental flag; Strong Vincent, an attorney from Erie, Pa., who rallied Union troops at the Battle of Gettysburg; Tillie Pierce, a 15-year-old who helped comfort the wounded at Gettysburg; and Dog Jack, a mixed bull terrier who served as the mascot of the 102nd Pa. Volunteers.

Also included in the exhibit is a tintype camera and portable printing press on loan from the Smithsonian Institution, along with war material produced in Pittsburgh factories, personal items from soldiers, Civil War-era costumes and accessories, and original recruitment posters from communities across Pennsylvania.

Enthusiasts won’t want to miss additional Civil War areas located in several of the History Center’s long-term exhibitions, including Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation on the second floor, From Slavery to Freedom on the fourth floor, and the Falk Collection Center on the fourth floor, which features the Monongahela House bed that Abraham Lincoln slept in during his only visit to Pittsburgh in 1861.

The Pennsylvania’s Civil War exhibit is a key component in a series of History Center programs and publications developed in partnership with Pennsylvania Civil War 150, the statewide initiative to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. African Americans were active participants in their quest for freedom, nationhood,

and self-determination before, during, and after the Civil War.

e Civil War in Pennsylvania: e African American Experience goes beyond the battlefi eld or usual Civil War

history with essays from eight scholars of civil rights, emigration, abolitionism, armed resistance, service in

the war, and more. It treats the war with circumspection from a point of view that defi ned the confl ict as a war

over slavery and the opportunity to liberate the masses of Africans from bondage. at view did not see the

war as an opportunity to restore the Union but to build a new Union that included liberty for all

– the enslaved and free.

These strikingly original essays on people of African descent in Penn-sylvania in the Civil War Era are both accessible to the general reader and indispensable to specialists in-terested in the most recent research on black emigration, the United States Colored Troops, and the early photographic record of people of African descent.

As explorers, hunters, soldiers, and settlers poured into the vast territory opened by the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, Pittsburgh and neighboring towns supplied boats and goods for the western trade. The Pittsburgh/Brownsville-built Steamboat Arabia was heading up the Missouri River in the fall of 1856 when it struck a tree snag and sank just north of Kansas City, Mo.

The Steamboat Arabia’s cargo hold was full of one million objects, some as small as pickles and some as large as prefabricated homes, bound for general stores and pioneer settlements in the West. As the years passed, the river changed course and left the Arabia buried deep beneath a Kansas cornfield until it was excavated in 1988 by a group of modern-day adventurers, who uncovered the boat’s magnificent cargo – fine dishware, clothing, and even bottled food all preserved in remarkable condition.

In partnership with the Steamboat Arabia Museum in Kansas City, the History Center’s Steamboat Arabia exhibit will showcase more than 750 items drawn from the vast Arabia collection. Using artifacts, period images, recreated spaces, and interactive experiences, the exhibit will examine frontier life, the steamboat era, and the importance of the rivers during a key period of exploration in American history.

2 The Newsletter of the Senator John Heinz History Center 412-454-6000 | www.heinzhistorycenter.org

Several new features have recently been added to the long-term exhibit, which chronicles more than 250 years of African American history, including the anti-slavery movement, the Underground Railroad, and the impact of 19th century activism on the modern quest for civil and human rights in Pittsburgh.

Life-like audio/visual enhancements, interactive stations, and new artifacts have been added throughout the exhibit, including: • Five touch-screen interactives that encourage

visitors to explore the 19th century Underground Railroad safe houses throughout Western Pa.;

• Newly installed iPads that allow visitors to scroll through digitized copies of manumission, indenture, and freedom papers discovered by the Allegheny County Recorder of Deeds Office that help to tell previously untold stories about slave ownership and freedom in Western Pa.; and

• A new life-like museum figure of Civil War soldier Alexander Kelly, who lived in Allegheny City and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for saving the colors of his company in 1864 during the Battle of Chaffin’s Farm in Virginia.

The exhibit is co-sponsored by PPG Industries Foundation, the University of Pittsburgh, The Pittsburgh Foundation, and The Double Eagle Foundation.

With cold temperatures and frost covering the playground, keeping kids active and in shape during the winter months isn’t an easy task.

The Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum will encourage kids to get off the couch and stay fit on Sat., Feb. 1 for the NFL Play 60 Training Camp, sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Participants will enjoy five floors of fun football- related activities, including:• A mini-NFL Combine on the History Center’s

fifth floor where young visitors can test their speed in the 40-yard dash, gauge their vertical leap, and practice their accuracy passing a football;

• Demonstrations on fun and healthy food to fuel the body in the Weisbrod Kitchen Classroom; and

• A touchdown dance contest where young visitors can flaunt their best moves, sports trivia, and more!

The History Center event is presented in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Steelers and NFL Play 60, the National Football League’s health and fitness campaign to encourage young fans to be active for at least 60 minutes a day. For more information, please contact Sarah Rooney at 412-454-6373 or [email protected].

In an era of smaller budgets and looser regulations, small colleges were able to compete successfully against much larger programs in the early part of the 20th century.

In the 1922 Rose Bowl, Washington & Jefferson College played to a scoreless tie with the University of California. The following year, Penn State made the journey west but lost to USC 14-0. The University of Pittsburgh received invitations to play in the 1928, 1930, and 1933 games, but lost twice to USC and once to Stanford. The Panthers won their only Rose Bowl in 1937, besting Washington 21-0.

For more than 90 years, regional schools have staked their place on the college football stage – cementing their claim to national championships, breaking barriers, and bowling over fans with their play.

A number of regional schools competed on the national stage later that decade, including Duquesne University, who defeated Mississippi State 13-12 in the 1937 Orange Bowl, and Carnegie Mellon, who made their first major bowl appearance in the 1939 Sugar Bowl, losing to TCU 15-7. In 1956, Georgia’s governor tried to stop Pitt’s Sugar Bowl matchup against Georgia Tech when he realized the Panthers team featured an African American player, Bob Grier. Pitt agreed to play only if Grier was allowed to compete and the sections of Panther fans were not segregated. Although Pitt lost the game to Georgia Tech 7-0, they claimed a bigger victory for the cause of integration.

While both Pitt and Penn State have sealed national championships in bowl games, perhaps the most dramatic Sugar Bowl moment came in 1982 when Pitt quarterback Dan Marino fired a 33-yard touchdown pass to tight end John Brown for a come from behind win over Georgia 24-20. This marked the winningest three-year run in Pitt history and the third consecutive post-season bowl victory for the team.

Visitors to the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum can learn more about local college football bowl tradition.

History Meets Hollywood at Fort PittDiscover Pittsburgh’s history as “Hollywood on the Mon” at the Fort Pitt Museum’s new exhibition, Unconquered: History Meets Hollywood at Fort Pitt, sponsored by the Laurel Foundation. The exhibit explores the story behind the siege of Pittsburgh following the French & Indian War and the star- studded 1947 Cecil B. DeMille film “Unconquered.”

In the summer of 1763, American Indians participating in a broader movement known as Pontiac’s Rebellion attacked Fort Pitt and Pittsburgh. The story was made famous in the film “Unconquered,” which stars actors Gary Cooper, Paulette Goddard, and Boris Karloff.

Using rarely seen original movie props, photographs, and costumes alongside 18th century artifacts and documents, the Unconquered exhibit explores a turning point in American history and contrasts the historical events with the Hollywood depiction. The film, which premiered in 1947 at Loew’s Penn Theatre (now Heinz Hall) in Pittsburgh, is shown daily at the Fort Pitt Museum during the exhibit’s run through August 2014.

The Fort Pitt Museum is the most affordable family-friendly cultural experience in the region and is open daily 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors (62+), $3 for students and children (ages 6-17). Children under 5 and History Center members get in free. Please note that the Fort Pitt Museum will temporarily close beginning Fri., Jan. 10, 2014 for exhibit updates and maintenance and will reopen on Sat., Feb. 1, 2014. Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, the oldest site of human habitation in North America, enjoyed its most successful season since becoming part of the History Center museum system in 2000.

Fueled by popular events such as the Atlatl Competition and American Indian Heritage Weekend, the National Historic Landmark drew more than 17,000 visitors from 17 different countries and 41 states during the 2013 season.

Recently named one of the “Five Great Places to See Evidence of First Americans” by Smithsonian magazine, Meadowcroft is located in Avella, Washington Co., Pa., and features a massive, 16,000-year-old rock overhang used by the region’s earliest inhabitants for shelter.

Traveling forward through time, Meadowcroft offers visitors the chance to experience what everyday life was like for Upper Ohio Valley inhabitants over the past 400 years.

Visitors to Meadowcroft’s 16th century Eastern Woodland Indian Village can step inside a wigwam, pound corn into meal, or try their hand at throwing the atlatl, a spear thrower used by prehistoric hunters.

Meadowcroft will officially kick off its new season on Sat., May 3, 2014. A special Members’ Day event is slated for Sat., June 7, 2014. For more information, visit www.heinzhistorycenter.org and click on the Meadowcroft tab or call 724-587-3412.

S

These strikingly original essays on people of African descent in Penn-sylvania in the Civil War Era are both accessible to the general reader and indispensable to specialists in-terested in the most recent research on black emigration, the United States Colored Troops, and the early photographic record of people of African descent.
