From The Parent Education Committee

Psst: We’re Hiring. Pass It AlongBy: Bob Schaffer, Liberty Common School Headmaster

There have been a handful of exciting Liberty staff announcements recently – frompregnancies, to retirements, to entrepreneurial career opportunities. Some of theseannouncement entail staff departures leaving important shoes to fill starting with the nextschool year.

We insist on only hiring the best. If you know of anyone who might fall into that category, please pass this newsletter along to them and ask them to consider applying.

Complete job descriptions are posted at the Liberty Common website (CLICK HERE).

Determining who are exactly the best applicants starts with a rigorous screening andinterview process. For example, over Spring Break, we’ll attend a teacher job fair specificallyfor those interested in working at a charter school.

Shortly thereafter, we’ll head to Greeley for two days at UNC’s teacher job fair – one of thelargest in the West. Then it’s on to the CSU teacher job fair. We’ll meet lots of applicants atthese events.

We also receive piles of applications in the mail, and by email, from people who respond toour job postings and communications just like this one. Helping the school by linking thiscolumn from your Facebook wall, an email to your friends, or linking it on Twitter also goesa long way toward attracting top candidates.

Oh, we get a lot of middling applications, too. Today’s teacher colleges seem to crank outmore and more new teachers whose heads have been filled with misguided ideas abouteducation. Fortunately, these applicants tend to identify themselves early and enthusiasticallyon our initial screening questionnaire about basic teaching philosophy and experience.

To determine a teacher’s suitability to step into a Liberty classroom, we do not rely on a stateteacher’s license, or even a specialty degree in education. What we care about most is

Page 7: Volume 21, Issue 23- February 20, 2018 Liberty Common ...hs.libertycommon.org/UserFiles/Servers/Server_127666/File...This week is George Washington Week at LCHS. George Washington

content knowledge and the proven ability to convey it to students. We want legitimateacademic experts – intellectual leaders capable of preparing Liberty students for the nextphases of their academic journeys.

Once we narrow the field to top candidates, we invite them to participate in a comprehensiveinterview covering philosophy, pedagogy, and mostly, knowledge. Indeed, all Libertyteachers remember their Liberty job interview and are quick to comment about how different itwas compared to others.

To hear their recollections for yourself, please click on the nearby video. You’ll gainfirsthand insight on the interview process at our school. And again, if you know someonewho might be up to the high expectations of Liberty, now’s the time to urge them to apply.

From Mr. Lovely, Principal

AST Tip of the WeekStudy Timeline (Part 4). The night before an exam, you should set aside time to go overyour study guide and other notes from class one more time. If you have spent time eachnight for the last week going back over assignments and quizzes, this will be a finalrefresher. Most importantly, you should get a good night’s sleep. Students that have had agood night’s sleep are able to make more educated decisions while taking exams.
