UNITED KINGDOMJennifer Rush (at no.1 for 4th consecutiveweek), A -Ha and Colonel Abrams are still top-ping the charts white Feargal Sharkey's AGood Heart shot up dramatically this weekfrom 32 to 12. Other fast movers include UB40 (Don't Break My Heart; 35-19), Siouxsie &The Banshees (Cities in Dust; 36-23) andTalking Heads (Road To Nowhere; 41-26).Major entries this week for Eurythmics &Aretha Franklin (Sisters Are DOI17" It For Them-selves; 38) and Kool & The Gang (Emergen-cy; 52).Many stations have added the Grace Jonessingle Slave To The Rhythm. Other new addi-tions this week are the duets Sisters Are Doin'It For Themselves (Eurythmics & ArethaFranklin) and Ws Only Love, in which BryanAdams takes the lead together with Tina Turn-er. Apart from the Miami Vice Theme by JanHammer, the contribution of Glenn Frey to thesame soundtrack also gets good airplay in En-gland at the moment. The single is entitledYou Belong To The City and this one could beGlenn Frey's 2nd soundtrack hit success afterthe smash earlier this year with The Heat Is Onfor the Beverly Hills Cop Soundtrack.

GERMANYNorwegian act A -Ha takes the lead as bestplayed single in Germany (and creeps up onemore place in the charts: 2-3) followed byModern Talking's Cheri (still no. 1 chartwise)and Stevie Wonder. Strong increase in airplayfor Matt Bianco's Yeh Yeh and apart from Dou-ble, Heinz Rudolf Kunze (Dein 1st MeinGanzes Herz) is best played local single at themoment. While Jennifer Rush is still on top ofthe English charts, the German stations areplaying her new single entitled Destiny.

Hot additions to the German airwaves thisweek include CBS act Cock Robin with WhenYour Heart is Weak, Grace Jones, the new Ali-son Moyet (For You Only) and the new Olivia

AlgNewton -John single Soul Kiss. Bubbling un-der and with good chances to enter the Ger-man airplay lists are Red Box (Lean On Me),Arcadia and Fritz Brause (Shilly Shally onPapagayo).Chartwise the most notable movers includeTina Turner (12-24), Talking Heads (15-23),Ready For The World (18-60) and Dire Straits(Money For Nothing; 19-30). New entries forMadonna (Gambler, new at 39) and RoundOne (In Zaire, in at 41).

FRANCECarrere act Century still stays on top withLover Why, followed by Eros Ramazzotti andTinds We Don't Need Another Hero is new inthe Top 3 (from 7). International productionsshooting up the French charts are in theminority compared to the good selling Frenchsingles. A record that picked up most of thesales compared to last week is the duet be-tween Serge Gainsbourg and Charlotte enti-tled Lemon Incest (Philips/Phonogram), arecord charted on all French hitparades andin 2 weeks up to no. 5. Also new in the Top 10is Finzy Kontini with Cha Cha Cha, one of ourEuro-crossover tips as well. Other good mov-ing local productions for C. Jerome (Et TuDanes Avec Llli) and Magazine 60 (DonQuichotte).

BENELUXThe best selling single in the Benelux at themoment is Nana Mouskouri's theme to the TVseries Mistral's Daughter,. entitled Only Love(on CNR). The Greek singer was always verypopular in the Benelux, but her successvanished somewhat over the last few years.Yet with this single. sales have risen considera-bly the last 4 weeks and Only Love replacesUB40's f Got You Babe from the no.1 spot.Simple Minds are at 2 (from 4) and Sandra'sMaria Magdalena shoots up from 8 to no. 3.

The success for local singer Gerard Joling

is incredible and his debut album Love Is InYour Eyes has in no less than 2 weeks alreadygone gold (50,000 copies). And with furthercontinued success in Belgium as well, the sin-gle Ticket To The Tropics (very suitable for theGerman market as well, we think) jumps up 4notches to 8

Other good selling singles in the Beneluxinclude Sade's Sweetest Taboo (13-16), TinaTurner's One Of The Living (14-17), Ready ForThe World's Oh Sheila (17-45), A -Has Take OnMe (20-38), Madonna's Dress You Up (21-59)and John .Parr's St. Elmo's Fire (22-39)

ITALYMadonna keepS on grooving and is still nO. 1,but the heirs to her thrown are very near by:Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner (Hero, from 14 to3 this week) and Simple Minds (Alive AndKicking, new at 4).

Only 2 Italian productions are in the Top10, Righeira's L'Estate Ste Finendo at no. 7and Taffy with Midnight Radio, produced bythe Deejay Gang (see also front page).

SWITZERLANDOf the 4 new entries in the Swiss Top 30, 3 aretaken by Ariola and include Radio Rama(Chance To Desire), C.C. Catch (I Can LoseMy Heart Tonight) and the new Bad Boys Blue(Pretty Young Girl; the follow-up to the hugeEuropean hit You're A. Woman). The other newentry is Matt Bianco's Yeh Yeh.

Sandra is on top with Maria Magdalena, followed by Modern Talking and Kool & TheGang. Two strong moves in the Top 10! LeeMarrow's Shanghai and John Parr.

Other strong moves, outside the Top 10 forRound One (In Zaire), Jennifer Rush (Destiny)and Baltimore's Woody Boogie. A -Ha, TinaTurner, Sade, Falco and Madonna (Gambier)have very good chances of entering the SwissTop 30 next week.

Blancmange - Believe You Me (London)It took Stephan Luscombe and Neil Arthur ayear to record their new album. But again theyhave proven to be able to deliver a wide rangeof pop melodies. Check out tracks like LoseYour Love and Relieve,

Green On Red - No Free Lunch (Mercury)The most commercial exponent of the emerg-ing new country -wave. Watch out for theirsoon to be released single Time Ain't Nothing.Other songs to look out for: Time Slips Awayand Honest Man.

The Robert Cray Band - False Accusations(Sound -Products)Contemporary blues done very elegantly andwith great appeal. Check out the slow bluesSonny, the Booker T.- funk in Change OfHeart, Change Of Mind and the spine -chillingbaled I've Slipped Her Mind.

RADIO BURNERSThe regular readers of this column may beeager to find out if our prediction from lastweek came true. Well, it was quite Simple, these Minds have highest entry this week andtheir album Once Upon A Time jumps in at no.12. Straight after its release the albumreached no. 1 in the UK and has Top 10 posi-tions in Germany, Holland, Denmark and Italy. Its entr at 12 makes this album, together withthe -arson's Project album Vulture Cul-ture, the highest entry made by an album in1985. Other flighiikor entries in 85 included

Tears For Fears (13), Kate Bush (15) and PhilCollins (15).

The album is also a Pave on European ra-dio and this week even surpassed the albumplay of Kate Bush and Stevie Wonder. Trackslike Alive And Kicking. Once Upon A Time, AllThe Things She Said and Ghost Dancing (asong they previewed at the Live -aid Telecast)are amongst the favourites.

Album airplay on Dire Straits continues(the title track of the album has just beenreleased in the European market) and nearlyall tracks of the album get heavy coverage onEuropean radio.

zero hour. Their mission: to boldly gowhere no band has gone before'... Thesewords basically reveal the aim of the WEAcampaign on the new ZZ Top album After-burner. European radio already got a previewof the album in the form of Sleeping Bag, butthe album contains 9 more spicy songs toburn the European airwaves these comingweeks. Suggestions for your radio are PlanetOf The Women, Can't Stop Rockin' and

Stages. The album will be on your desks thisweek.

Virgin just released a very commercialdouble album of Mike Oldfield entitled TheComplete. A splendid package containing thebest of his LPs and some of his singlereleases.ABC was always a band with very imaginativeconcepts about pop music and visualization.Frontman Martin Frey has formed a newgroup and their new album How To Be A Zil-lionairel is a splendid pop album containingthe singles Be Near Me, Vanity Calls andother good tracks like Tower Of London, Fearf The World and So Hip It Hurts.

Talking Heads are rushing up the Europe-an Top 100 charts with Little Creatures goingfrom 22 to 13 with the help of the new RoadTo Nowhere release. Iron Maiden jumps up 6places to 19 due to heavy sales in Central Eu-ropa One of the best movers is DepecheMode's '81185 hit collection with Germany,Belgium and Denmark having the LP enter.

The Kool & The Gang album getsrenewed sales and goes to 28 (from 61) dueto the success of the title track as single, whilethe former single Cherish continues to beplayed (and sold) in a good number of coun-tries. The Emergency album is the secondhighest entry on the German charts this week.Modern Talking's Let's Talk About Love is stillclimbing steadily (33-53), as is JenniferRush's Movintuzanne Vega slips in at 95and will undo6btedly go up during the nextfew weeks. She is amongst the biggest NewTalent favoured by the European media in-cluding the Eurotipsheet editorial team.

ALEXANDRA'SNEWS

CORNER

Hi again and a great day to you too! Lots' anew stuff's coming up._ Something which es-pecially drew my attention is the new MAG-NUM album, On A Storytellers Night. Withoutany doubt one of my pers. faves. Apparentlyit's not really new in terms of just recorded. Itwas released in the UK a few months ago ona small table. As the band has just recentlysigned a deal with Polydor, this is the firstrelease for them_ So Europe, do somethingwith that great LP it would be a shame notto! *

Maybe not everyone has heard thatSTEVE STRANGE & RUSTY EGAN have part-ed ways in a musical sense that is. Stevethough returned with a new band which is to-tally different from VISAGE. They are calledSTRANGE CRUISE and have already record-ed material for a forthcoming album. The sin-gle is entitled Rebel Blue Rocket and it soundsmuch rockier than one would expect fromSteve. The band will also play live, as Stevewas particularly unhappy not to be able to ful-fill the VISAGE fans' wishes by doing so. Aworldtour is about to be confirmed. The singlewill not be on the market for a couple ofmonths * SIMON E is supporting PAULYOUNG on his US gigs in November. Sowatch out for it , both will be more than worthwatching! * Just out is the new album by ex-BAUHAUS members who are now calledLOVE AND ROCKETS. The LP is entitled

Seventh Dream Of A Teenage Heaven. Thisnew band sounds very different from the Bau-haus sound. But get it anyway, it should dowell ! *

Another new release came from THE BIGDISH, their single is titled Prospect Street.Earlier this year the band supported CHINACRISIS on their tour but TBD is currently play-ing headliners until end of October * Thenew VARDIS album is due to be released any -day now. It's their second and is calledVigilante, available through Mausoleumrecords * Also due now is the CULT album ti-tled Love. ,It contains the current single Rain. After a short visit to Japan, the band is startinga major UK tour *

In December ECHO & THE BUNNYM ENcan be seen on a major UK tour promotingtheir latest releases an LP and single, BringOn The Dancing Horses * Ever heard ofPAGANINI ? Well yeah I know he's a classicalguy but his great -great-grandson MARC hasset up his own band using the family name. But this is certainly all they have in common,to say the least. Mark's hardrock band arefrom Switzerland and they have just had theirnew album released and a single titled BerlinBy Night. Who knows old Paganini may wellbe pleased with it! * KISSING THE PINK willmake a lot of people happy with their new sin-gle release, She's So Curious * Just out isThe Big Kiss, the debut album by THEREZABAZAR, produced by ARIF MARGIN *Another debut album comes from VIOLENTBLUE, called You've Got To Stay Young andrecorded with TIM PALMER *SupportingGO WEST on their UK tour is a band with thename IT BITES *

Okay Folks, now for the weekly concertreview, again at the Paradiso. First : HORIZON& HELLOISE have been rocking the placedown. Both bands joined together on a"Heavy Hero Tour". This particular gig thoughwas the presentation of the HELLOISE debutalbum, Cosmogony. HORIZON's album,Master Of The Game, was released a whileago. Both bands as well as their albums aredefinitely well worth seing and hearing, if youlike to rock! * Next day - same venue- some-thing completely different. HUGHMASEKELA- That man and his band are trulybrilliant! Very tight- with a drummer andguitarist who make you shiver! Highly recom-mended to watch that show * Onwards to thesubject of "the overwhelmed hospitalized per-son"! The Hospital dismissed him and themoney is still rollin' in. So this week- still noname revealed. Sorry Folks! Alright- that's it forthe time being -till next week. Keep smilingLuv' Alexandra

NEW BRITISH MEASURES AGAINST PIRATES W.H. SMITH MOVEThe British government is steppingup its efforts to force off -shorepirate radio station Radio Laserfrom the airwaves. Plans to jam itsbroadcasts have been drawn upand as a last resort the American -owned ship might even be physi-cally boarded.

Anchored about 20 miles offthe East coast of England, Laser'sseven disc -jockeys beam 18 hoursa day of pop hits to an audience inBritain and Northern Europe saidto number 12 million. The Depart-ment of Trade and Industry in Lon-don says that both Laser and itsnearby rival Radio Caroline contra-vene the Marine BroadcastingOffences Act and the recentlycreated Telecommunications Act.

The stations are unlicensed, make no "needletime" paymentsfor the discs they play and interferewith legitimate local radio broad-casts as well as navigation fre-quencies, say the authorities.

Since August, the departmenthas been spending over 10,000pounds a week keeping watch onthe two pirates with a charteredpatrol ship, the "Dioptric Surveyor."But because both radio ships areanchored in international waters, they can't themselves be

though the government says theidea of using troops is "rubbish."However there are said to be someofficials who believe such an oper-ation would be feasible and couldbe defended in international law.

Meanwhile, Laser deejays likeTommy Rivers and Charlie Wolfecontinue to beam a steady diet oftop 40 hits and oldies to an ever-increasing audience. They believetheir success shows up the short-comings of the legal broad-casters. Says Wolfe: "The way toget rid of us is to out -programme

But while they remain ham-strung by complicated technicalregulations, and strict limits on theamount of music they can push outon air, Britain's BBC and commer-cial radio stations seem doomed tolose out to pirate operators who,not without reason, have beendubbed "the anarchists of theairwaves."

Laser insists that it puts out a"clean" signal that could not affect, say, aircraft. But the governmentcheck team says that as recentlyas September 27 Laser transmis-sion interfered with the radiodirection -finding beacons on oilrigs for helicopters.

prosecuted. All the government can do is to

prosecute anyone supplying theships from British ports and, in

fact, three men were recently fined500 pounds each for deliveringdiesel fuel to the Caroline ship"Ross Revenge."

Since last year, when the tradeand industry department took overresponsibility for tackling radiopirates from the Post Office, therehave been a series of raids andequipment seizures affecting un-authorised broadcast stations in

London, but many of these havebeen low -power community -basedservices with fairly small numbersof listeners.

Laser, with its powerful 50kilowatt transmitter, is a differentmatter and the government hasbeen under a lot of pressure fromthe legitimate broadcasting au--thorities to do something about it.

It can't be raided, blackadinghasn't worked, so the next step isobviously jamming, but the dif-ficulty is that any attempt to jam thepirates could also affect the localstations and emergency servicesthe government wants to protect.

If all else fails, boarding theship may be the only choice,

The massive U.K. retail chain W.H.Smith is to introduce a radio stationand video programme presenta-tion into the 260 record/tapedepartments of its nationwidenetwork.

Already in operation, as fromOctober 29, is a 90 minute chart -style radio show, hosted by topdisc -jockey David Jensen, taking20 tracks from the top 40 albums, plus selected singles, and inter-views with pop artists along withnews of tours. This package willrun six hours a day in all musicdepartments of the chain.

The video presentation, run-ning for 30 minutes will be repeat-ed through two hours at lunchtimedaily in 211 of the stores. Also host-ed by David "Kid" Jensen, it 'll takein tracks from the top 20 musicvideos of the week, plus a few sin-gles. The videotape is to bechanged every other week and theaudio presentation every Tuesday.

W.H. Smith's main target is the15-24 year olds and the aim is tomake the stores' music divisions"more up-to-date and interesting."Both shows have been producedfor the chain by Retail VideoProductions in London.

Platinum Alf- Alison Moyer recently visited Holland to perform at the'Platengala '85: the annual Dutch record event, and received a platinumaward for the sale of more than 100.000 copies of her debut album 'Alf!

Pictured from left to right are CBS product -manager Ruud Roben, Ali-son and CBS Artist -Marketing manager Jaap van Buchem.

VICTOIRES DE LA MUSIQUE AWARDSOn Saturday November 23, An-tenne 2, the national French TVchannel is presenting for the firsttime an award gala for the recordindustry.

Organized by the ministry ofculture in co-operation with theFrench SN EP (IFPI) andcopyrights bureau SACEM, theshow will be quite similar to the USOscar presentations. More than 20awards will be given in a two hourshow, which will obviously featurea string of major national and inter-

national artists. The prime timeshow is produced by ClaudeFliouter for the Ministry of Cultureas the Les Victoires De La MusiqueGala (victories of music). TheFrench already present a very suc-cessful annual award show for thefilm industry, called Cesare. Nomi-nated records are voted on bymore than 7,000 people from mus-ic related groups like retailers, mu-sicians and producers. Theprogramme will be transmitted livefrom the Moulin Rouge.

MUSEXPOEMPHASIS ON MUSIC VIDEOEvery major European market wasrepresented at the combinedMUSEXPONI DEXP0/1 nternationalMusic Video '85 trade show in Lon-don (October 16-18)), where thamain emphasis was firmly on mus-ic video, its growth and its develop-ment into a fully-fledged industry inits own right.

As Sidney Lanier of JumpProductions told the audience atan IMV seminar: "The pop promoindustry has developed from anexperimenting infant into a majorforce with a home market turnoverin excess of 30 million pounds.Promos have become an essentialpart of the marketing campaign forthe release of any record."

The point was confirmed by theIMV presentations made at theHippodrome club in London onthe show's last evening, with overone hundred promos contendingfor a series of awards in variouscategories.

Overall winner was TalkingHeads' "Road To Nowhere," fol-lowed by Tom Petty & The Heart-breakers' "Don't Come AroundHere No More" and Duran Duran's"Wild Boys" in second and thirdplaces. The three clips dominatedthe awards event, Talking Headstaking a total of seven prizes andthe others three each.

Longform music video is

progressing more slowly, accord-

ing to Mike Heap, sales and mar-keting head of Heron Entertain-ment, His company had identifiedmusic video as an expansion areanearly three years ago, but thegrowth rate hadn't been up to ex-pectations, and releasing any titlewithout the involvement and sup-port of the record company andthe artist could still be "commercialsuicide."

Heap looks forward to a newvideo carrier, perhaps more likeCompact Disc, that would over-come the problem of publicresistance to the cassette format. And he noted that there's tremen-dous resistance to the prices distri-butors had to charge to get theircosts back. Acquisition costs canmake even the most popularrelease a loser bet: Heron had onlyjust broken even with DavidBowie's "Serious Moonlight," andthen only by splitting the concertfootage into three separate tapes.

Overall attendance at the three-day show, held in the KensingtonExhibition Centre, West London, was more than 2,000 people from600 companies and 33 countries, according to Roddy Shashoua, theorganizer and the man responsiblefor bringing MUSEXPO across theAtlantic to London, which he insistsis now the world capital for creativemusic.

POPWORLD CONTINUESAID PROJECTS

Social awareness in the pop/rock community is higher than everthis year. The Band-Aid, USA ForAfrica and Live Aid projects haveobviously attracted most of theattention. But they have also ig-nited a string of similar, socially orpolitically influenced, projects. Gel-doff's Band Aid initiative wascopied in almost all major countrieswith multi -artists benefit recordingsfrom Australia, Canada, Norway,Holland, South America and manyother countries. The tremendousfinancial success of these projectsrightfully added pride to the pop/rock community, which is other-wise often criticised for its egoismand explicit lyrics.

Willie Nelson's initiative, the USFarm Aid benefit at the Universityof Illinois 2 weeks ago alreadyraised more than $13 million, in-tending to help US farmers and isexpected to still triple this figure.

Highlights of the show, whichwas carried live on more than 300U.S. radio stations, plus an addi-tional 175 tv stations, included par-ing of Billy Joel with Randy New-man and Daryl Hall with BonnieRaiff. It also marked the first publicperformance of Van Halen withnew leadsinger Sammy Hagar in-stead of David Lee Roth.

However the Nashville NetworkTNN, which covered the event in-terupted its broadcast when Hagarcontiniously used a string of obs-cenities. The show has alreadybeen sold to Italy and Japan, whileother countries are also expectedto broadcast the entire or part ofthe event.

APARTHEIDA string of major artists is also

backing the Anti Apartheid re-cording Sun City, with BruceSpringsteen, Stevie Wonder, RingoStarr and Bob Dylan joining initiatorSteve Van Zandt (ex E -Street Bandmember) and another 26 artists.Van Zandt originally intended to re-cord the song solo for his soon tobe released album, but after theenthousiasm shown by the otheracts, it was quickly transformedinto an all-star single. An abumincluding various versions of thesong (rap & jR77) as well asspeeches by freedom fighters Nel-son Mandela and Desmond Tutuwill be released this week onbatten Records.

rope 1. The most important one un-doubtedly is the addition of famousFrench comedian Colluche, withhis extremely popular game, Jeude la Verite, to the morningprogramme. Colluchas show is thetop rated AM show in France. Theartist only made a contract for 1year and it will be vital for the sta-tion to continue his programme inorder to keep the ratings up. Eu-rope 1 has also been very suc-cessful with its Top 50 National Sin-gles charts, an idea developed byprogramme chief Albert Emsalemand presented by three major me-dia organizations in France (CanalPlus for TV and Tele7jours forpress). It is also traditional that, starting approximately six monthsprior to a general election, Europe1 always gains an audience due toits popular political commentaries.

The major FM stations wereable to maintain their position butdid not gain a higher percentageafter a two year period of tremen-dous victories. NRJ is still by farFM's market leader and it reallythreatens the two major AM sta-tions with its 23.2 percentage. Late-ly NRJ has had some majorproblems with some of its fran-

chised stations in the south ofFrance and it is trying to establishan enlarged structure with theseindependent stations. It is very sig-nificant that looking at audiencesunder the 50 year age group NRJis by far the nation's top station with32.6 percent (Europe 1 244; RTL22.6). In the general ratings thefourth station is France Inter with20.5, but it is not very important forthe music industry. Hit FM is thenext station with 5 percent followedby a string of stations includingRFM, Poste Parisien and 95.2 FM.Especially the latter should bewatched carefully as they havegained some points and will betransmitting from a new verystrong antenna before Christmas. It is therefore expected that 95.2will become the second strongestFM station in the Paris region andmight become a serious competi-tor to NRJ.

rNEW MEDIA HEADS

IN FRANCEring the last few weeks there

hav= been some significantchang in leadership at some ofthe Fran media. These changesalways invo politics as well asprogramming 'd often clearly in-dicate major cha s. At Frenchnational televisio Jean Druck-er has become the new PresidentDirecteur General and is wel-comed by the music and entertain-ment industry as someone with apositive feel for music. Jean Druck-er is brother of the famous Frenchmoderator Michel Drucker whohas taken a sabatical year from hisno. 1 rated TV show ChampsElysees. Drucker will welcome newmusic and variety shows atwhich are being developed byprogram -director Patrice BlancFranchard for a January release.

Micouleau suc-ceeds Roger Kreicher as Directeurdes Varietes. Kreicher occupiedthis influential position for 18 yearsand,, has gone into retirement.Micouleau is only 34 and has beenManaging Director of Haves Inter-national Media which was linkedwith RTL as the company arrangedall the advertising and publicity fcrthe station. Although there is noofficial news yet on the programmedirection Micouleau wants to take,it is to be expected that he will con-tinue along the same lines as

Kreicher, who not only made thestation very popular but was alsoable to maintain the success overthe years. In the meantime the French recordindustry has also gone throughsignificant changes with Alain Levytaking the helm at Polygram (withLuigi Calebrese becoming MD atPolydor) and Henry de Bodinat asnew head of CBS. Bodinat camefrom the advertising business andis only 36. Claude Brunet has beenpromoted to Managing Director ofthe new RCA structure. Frits Spits - NOS HollandFrits Spits has a daily one hour prime timeprogramme on the national Dutch channelNOS.

"One album I like very much is from theAmerican band Green On Red andalthough the musical style they adhere tois not new, their approach is so fresh andinspired that they should have a chance toachieve commercial success. The timeseems ripe for a new country -wave andthey are the best exponents of this newtrend. The singer has a fantastic voice andreminds me very much of the early NeilYoung. (See also separate review on page11).

Listening to the new Sade album entitledThe Promise, I am sure that the trend ofcool -jazz will stay and wilt only grow in im-portance and impact. Matt Bianco, AnimalNightlife and Working Week, are all fantas-tic bands and I think it is to be expectedthat new emerging pop bands will eventu-ally play other types of jazz influencedmusic like big band for instance. My tip for crossover goes to the Zurichbased band Double with the fantastic sin-gle The Captain Of Her Heart. I listened toit last saturday and the same evening itwas on my programme. This band reallyhas potential and it's only a matter of timebefore they break.

Social awareness in the pop/rock communityis higher than ever. The Band-Aid, USA ForAfrica and Live -aid projects have obviously at-tracted most of the attention, but they havealso ignited a string of similar socially or politi-cally influenced projects.

The most striking one is the Anti -Apartheidsingle Sun City, a string of major artists suchas Bruce Springsteen, Pat Benatar, PeterGabriel and Ringo Star joining initiator SteveVan Zandt (ex -E Street member) and 26 otherartists. Van Zandt originally intended to recordthe song solo for his soon to be released al-bum, but after the enthousiasm shown by theother acts, it was quickly transformed into anall-star single An album including various ver-sions of the song (rap and jazz) as well asspeeches by freedom fighters Nelson Mande-la and Desmond Tutu will be released on Man-hattan Records as well.

SOCIAL POPYet more issues are being covered, such asthe single of Dionne Warwick & Friends enti-tled That's What Friends Are For (Arista), inwhich Elton John, Gladys Knight and StevieWonder join together in a Burt Bacha-rach/Carole Bayer Seger ballad destined toraise funds for the American foundation forAIDS research. Other artists are donatingsome of their profits to Greenpeace or playaan important role in anti -heroine campaigns(eg Pete Townshend).

All this proves that the pop world is wellaware of the role they exert on people's livesand that this community is willing to overseethe consequences and to assume responsibi-lity for such an influence.Over to some chart action now... With analmost identical Top B Matt Bianco enters theTop 10 (9-12). More Than I Can Bear somehowcan't be removed from the European radioand charts as the single moves up again thisweek to 57 due to renewed interest in France.More Than I Can Bear is one of those typical'sleeper' songs and the WEA companies havereleased the track several times,

SOUL DUETWith continued good positions in 11 major

European markets and an entry in the UK thisweek, Sandra's Maria Magdalena climbs fur-ther up the charts and is already no. 13. Othermoves for Depeche Mode (14-28). TalkingHeads, Madonna (Gambler; at the momentno less than 5 singles of this superstar can befound in the European Top 100), Grace Jones(19-32), Ready For The World (21-69) and Ar-cadia (23-43).Take On Me is still best played single in Eu-rope and is followed by John Parr's St. Elmo'sFire. Nearly all European stations have addedSisters Are Doin' It For Themselves, the duetof Aretha Franklin with Eurythmics, and the

single therefore is best mover in the AirplayTop 50 (4-38).

A couple of new entries in the Airplay Top50 although they all fall in the lower part of thechart; Feargal Sharkey, Jean -Jacques Gold-man and the duet of Bryan Adams & TinaTurner are the major new entries this week.
