From Principal Dr Watson Open Day A very successful Open Day was held last Sunday with record number of families attending. There was a great atmosphere across the school as we took the opportunity to let the community know of all the great things that happen here at Thomas Carr College. My thanks and appreciation are extended to all staff and students involved in Open Day. Year 10 and Year 11 Senior School Examinations Students in Year 10 and Year 11 will commence their final examinations on Monday November 16. Students will not be required at school except for their examinations. Students are encouraged to use their time outside of scheduled exams to study and/or to complete any outstanding assessments. Last week, all Year 10 and Year 11 students received a copy of their examination timetables and are encouraged to place a number of copies prominently around the house. Examination timetables also appear at the end of this edition of The Beacon. Students were also advised to arrive in plenty of time for their exams. Students in Year 11 will already be aware of the VCAA conditions concerning lateness so it is good practice to follow the advice Ms McIntyre sent to all students in Week 1 of this Term. Arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. A student who arrives late for a Thomas Carr College exam, must report to Student Reception and have a valid reason for his/her lateness.
Four useful study techniques, that have been found to be effective in helping students retain information for the longer term, are below:
Elaborative interrogation and self-explanation
In this strategy, a student will ask of the reading, “What do I already know about what I’ve just read?” The student will be able to use other parts of the text to confirm the answer to that question. Students will feel much more confident when they know the vocabulary and that the sentences make sense. Comprehension occurs when a student connects the sentences with existing knowledge and importantly, can identify where difficulties arise in comprehending and what the cause of the difficulty is.
Distributed Practice
We’ve all heard of ‘cramming’ before an exam. The strategy of ‘distributed practice’ is about spreading the load of study across a number of study sessions. Cramming can be effective if you don’t need to remember the details after the exam but if something is worth knowing in the first place, we want students to remember the details for the long term.
Interleaved Practice
A student who can recall a range of strategies to apply to a particular set of differing problems, is clearly at an advantage to a student who has only practised one strategy to solve the problem. For example, a student who only practises a vocabulary list by starting at the first word and repeating the word over and over until he or she thinks they have mastered all the words, is probably not going to remember the words as effectively as the student who mixes up the list, knows the meaning of the words and the contexts in which the words can be used. We often see issues in mathematics when students experience only one type of algorithm and when there is a variation to it, they struggle to understand how to apply it to a problem or set of problems. Interleaving is time consuming, but ultimately much more effective for retaining information.
Practice testing
Confronting a problem that is a variant on a concept that has been previously studied, may help a student with retention when they have to ‘GPS’ their memory banks to locate and retrieve course information. Taking brief quizzes is “better for memory than rereading” (Willingham, 2014) provided that the student can get immediate, corrective feedback. Many teachers at Thomas Carr College are utilising online quiz tools such as “Quia” to do just that. Simply rereading text can mislead a student into believing that he or she has studied the material. Having them complete practice tests or assisting them to create their own quizzes could be a very effective tool in developing longer lasting memories of class material. Practice testing is an excellent way of discerning whether further study is required or whether the student has a reliable and deep understanding of the course information.
Willingham, D.T. (2014). Strategies that make learning last. Educational Leadership, 72(2), 11-15.
Head Start Program All students will commence a one week Head Start Program on Monday December 3. The Head Start Program recognises the advantages that can be gained when students are able to experience their 2019 subjects prior to completing the academic year. During the Head Start Program, all students will receive course information, experience the first week of their 2019 classes and be assigned some holiday work including the reading of their English and Literature texts. Many students this year returned from the summer holidays well-prepared for the year ahead. While we recognise that having a balance between rest and work is important, knowing that you return to the academic year having made good preparations, can be a distinct advantage to the learning experience throughout the year.
End of Semester 2 Summary Reports These will be available to parents via PAM as of Monday 10 December.
Subject Selection Process for 2019 and Subject Change Process Last week Years 8 – 11 students received an email which outlined the subjects that have been allocated to them for 2019. As mentioned during student assemblies and parent information nights during the subject selection process, all possible efforts were made to provide students with their individual preferences. Unfortunately, due to lack of numbers, some subjects were not able to run and therefore some students missed out on their choice. I assure everyone that the decision to run or not run a subject was not taken lightly and many issues and consequences were considered.
Students will be given a 2 week period, commencing Monday November 12 and concluding Friday November 23 to request a change of subject for 2019. Changes are only possible if a class has room for students to move into it and no clashes arise with other existing subjects already allocated. To request a change, students need to complete a subject change form, from student reception and make sure that it is fully completed and returned no later than Friday November 23. No late forms will be accepted. This will be the last opportunity for students to request a change for 2019.
From the Director of Catholic Identity Mrs Egan Interfaith Panel Selected Year 11 Students visited Ilim College on Tuesday October 30 to listen to an Interfaith Panel. There were presenters from different religious backgrounds and the day centred on communications between diverse faiths and working together in harmony and peace. Year 10 Reflection Day On Friday the October 12, husband and wife team - David and Katie from YourChoicez presented a “Young Man’s” and “Young Women’s” Seminar to Year 10 Students. Please see below reflections from students about the day. David started the day by asking what we thought manhood was. Some boys took this seriously with pretty deep answers. We looked at two individuals, Charlie Sheen and a Decorated Australian Vietnam Veteran. David described what both men were known to have done and then asked which of the two had qualities we’d want later in our lives. By the end of it, we didn’t want to be a Charlie Sheen. Half way through the seminar we started looking at the dangers of having an addiction to pornography. We learnt that research has shown that addictions had certain characteristics: they were affordable, anonymous and accessible. Pornography was labelled as “the perfect addiction”. Many boys thought this wouldn’t be a problem until David started discussing the dangers of this addiction. Such as users becoming numb to such exposure and developing an unrealistic expectation of sex. The day was a great success, we learnt a lot, enjoyed ourselves and would definitely recommend it to future Year 10 students. William Maddock 10 Purple It was extremely deep and emotional when we spoke about Katie’s saddening experience with a troubled relationship she had been in when she was younger. We also spoke about how we see female role models and what is a perfect role model for women to follow. Katie made us realise that famous role models are great to follow and admire but it’s the people who are standing right beside you and love you unconditionally that are the ones who we should look up too. The day ended with the girls and boys reuniting and the couple answered questions about certain topics that we were curious about and wanted to find answers too. I really enjoyed the day as it was great to have these talks and experiences that girls find so challenging to open up about and learn. Maddy Cassar 10 Gold Parish Mass Dates Advent Term Once again, our students will be visiting St James Parish on Friday’s for Morning Mass. All are most welcome. Year 9 Country Experience The iD9 curriculum aims to develop students who are independent, confident, and inquisitive about their world, work co-operatively, are socially aware and connected to others. The Good Samaritan Campus Experience aims to provide all students with an exciting and challenging program in an environment that is safe, caring, structured and engaging. The Country Experience forms part of the compulsory curriculum at Thomas Carr College, therefore it is expected that all students attend the Good Samaritan Campus during their allocated timeframe. Any issues relating to attendance need to be discussed in advance with the Year Level Co-ordinators in consultation with the Head of Middle School and the Manager, Good Samaritan Campus. Should a student be unable to attend the Good Samaritan Campus due to medical reasons or is taken ill at the Good Samaritan Campus, the parents need to make arrangements for the collection of the student and a medical certificate from the treating doctor explaining clearly the reasons for the inability of the student to return to the Campus or the considerations that need to be accommodated needs to be provided to the College. A generic medical certificate is not acceptable. Should a student be deemed unfit to return to the Good Samaritan Campus it is the responsibility of the parents to communicate this to the Manager, Good Samaritan Campus and the Year Level Co-ordinators immediately. Students will not be able to return to the Tarneit Campus as all scheduled classes for their particular group are conducted at the Good Samaritan Campus. Please refer to the table below for 2018 dates.

Year 9 Silver has just recently completed their experience. By all reports it was a fabulous experience. We look forward to some student reflections in next issue of The Beacon. Year 7 2018 Parent Information Night On Thursday October 11, an information evening was held for the incoming Year 7 2019 parents and students. The night provided them with more detailed information they need to know about starting for the commencement of their child in 2019 at the College. I am looking forward in welcoming and working with students and their families in 2019. Year 9 2018 Parent Information Night On Thursday November 8, a compulsory Parent Information Night will be held at the College in the Fr Moran Performing Arts Centre for our current Year 8 families. During this evening you will hear from a range of speakers talking about the iD9 curriculum that your child will be undertaking in 2019.
From the Head of Senior School Mrs Knurek
Arrangements for Year 11 Students Studying a Unit 3 &4 Subject Year 11 students studying a Unit 3 & 4 subject this year have received their timetable specifying the date and time of their Unit 3 & 4 VCAA Exam. Please be advised that they will not be required to attend classes on the day before and the day of the exam.
Once they have completed their exam, they will have a number of study periods in their timetable. If these periods are at the end of the day, students may depart the College on the relevant days at the conclusion of their previous period. If students have no timetabled classes in period 6, they will depart at 2.30pm. If they have no timetabled classes in periods 5 and 6, they will depart school at the beginning of lunchtime. On Wednesday, some students have period 4 free. As ACS is now completed for Year 11 students, these students can leave at the end of period 3 (11.55am).
Students are expected to depart the College and go straight home. They are not permitted to purchase lunch at the local shopping centre and return to school and are discouraged from loitering in the local community. This is not free time for students to take on an additional work shift, but rather an opportunity to do some additional work, prepare for upcoming exams or to catch up on their studies if they are not required at the College. Students should use the time provided to continue their preparation and study program at home. Students are expected to attend all other classes and this includes homeroom at 8.40am every morning.
Year 12 Celebrations
This last fortnight has seen the celebratory events to mark the end of secondary schooling for our Year 12 students. The Final Assembly on Monday October 22, and the informal breakfast on the Tuesday were terrific celebrations and the students were a pleasure to be with. The Year 12 team of Homeroom teachers, led by Ms Jenni
Rothery and Mr Francis Camenzuli have given generously of their time throughout the year and this week was no exception. We thank them for their care of our students. All of these events only happen because of the work of a large team of people and we thank all those involved.
It is now time for all students to focus on work in the last few weeks of school. Please discuss with your son or daughter how to use this time effectively in their examination preparation Year 10 & 11 Examinations Senior School students will commence their end of year examinations on Monday November 19. A reminder that Year 10 and 11 students are not required at school during the designated examination period unless they have an exam. Students are expected to go home at the end of their examinations for the day and should not congregate across the road at Wyndham Shopping Centre Generally, students’ results reflect the work they have put into their preparation and revision. Some students have worked well all year, but others have taken a haphazard approach and have been inconsistent with their application to work and study. Students whose examination results affect their proposed course of study in 2019 may be required to return to the College for an interview to discuss subject options following the conclusion of the Head Start Program Year 11 VCAL students Year 11 VCAL students do not have examinations and will not be required at school during the period Monday November 19 – Thursday November 29, unless they have not completed all assessment tasks or competencies. Should this be the case, the VCAL Co-ordinator, Ms Natasha Le Noel, will contact parents and those students will be required to come to school to complete any outstanding work. All VCAL students returning in 2019 are required to participate in the VCAL Head start Program on Monday December 3, Tuesday December 4 and Friday December 7. Senior School Final Assembly On Friday November 16, we will celebrate the end of the academic school year with an assembly in which we celebrate the many achievements of our students in a relatively short Term 4. At this assembly, we will acknowledged the work of our student leaders this year. This will also be an opportunity for students to acknowledge the work done by their Homeroom teachers over the course of the year. I also wish to acknowledge the work done by the school administration staff this year. When students return after their examinations for the Head Start Program, they will do so as Year 11 and 12 students.
From the Information Centre Mrs Mercieca Year 12 Laptop Returns and Purchases A reminder that all laptops must be returned by Friday November 23. If families are intending to purchase the laptop, payment must be made at the Business Office by Friday November 16. All information regarding the procedure for returning or purchasing the laptops can be found on CareMonkey. Laptop Return Process – Years 9 to 11 All students in Years 9 to 11 will be returning their laptops at the end of this year. The laptop returns will take place during the final days of Head Start as outlined below. Current Year 11 students have been offered the opportunity to purchase their current laptops and use them in 2019. Current Year 7 and 8 students will keep their school allocated laptop.
