ENTERTAINMENTCOMMITTEE

By Sam Spicknall

The winter has been chilly but the activities have heated things up at Oceanside Village. From the weekly events such as Cards and Games on Thursday, which draws dozens, to Lucky Social with scores of your friends and neighbors on the week-ends, there is always something fun and exciting to do. The New Year’s Celebration, the elegant Se-nior Prom Night Dinner/Dance, big screen Super Bowl party, Stardust-er’s Big Band Dance and Valentine’s Day Dinner/Dance and Carolina Forest Choir provided much music, dancing and entertainment for the young at heart during January and February. We closed out the month with another successful Golf Cart Poker Run and Trivia Night.

March was a very busy month. We started the month with Mardi Gras, followed with Pancake Breakfast, Night at the Races, Library Book/Bake Sale, St. Patrick’s Party, Sock Hop, Craft Auction and ended with a Covered Dish Dinner.

Movie night has been a big hit show-ing recent box office movies shown on various Tuesdays in the commu-nity center. Watch the electronic sign board and bulletin boards for dates, times and showings.

As we move through Spring we are planning more events. Keep an eye on the bulletin boards for these and other events. We are hoping to add another Poker Run and Trivia Night in April.

Also, don’t forget the Easter sunrise service on Sunday, April, 21st at 6:30

taking place on the beach. Please join us for a short service, music and communion as we watch the sun rise over the ocean and celebrate the true meaning of Easter.

Please join us the first Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the com-munity center for the Entertainment Committee meeting where we dis-cuss our successes, improvements and organize and discuss upcoming events. There are opportunities for you to get involved, volunteer, chair an event and put your stamp on our future events.

Special thanks to all of the wonder-ful volunteers; planning, food shop-ping, selling tickets, setting up the hall, decorating, food prep, cooking, serving, cleaning up and lots more. Without all of you we could never provide these activities.

VALENTINES DINNER/DANCE

By Sam Spicknall

The annual Valentines Day Dinner/Dance was a huge success where nearly 200 Valentine sweethearts and friends danced the night away to the music of DJ James. The food was excellent thanks to all the volunteers who shopped, prepared, cooked and served the dinner. Many more vol-unteers setup, deocrated, set tables and cleaned up the community. A special thanks to Tim Reilly for cap-turing the evening in pictures.

BOCCE BBQ AND PARTYBy Ed Maurer

On February 4, 2019 the smell of hot dogs grilling, people laughing and ladies setting the tables could be heard coming from the courts. A hub of activity was happening to get ready for the first Bocce cookout.

The meal was prepared by “the Boc-ce Ladies” with Chef Jerry at the grill. The menu was extensive with everything from broccoli salad and haluski to cookies and chocolate cake. The weather was perfect for a fun game of Bocce following the meal. Win or lose, a fun time was had by all.

Snowbirds from Canada, the New England states, West Virginia, New York and Pennsylvania participat-ed. They all agreed that being in Oceanside Village for the winter is a great place for sunshine and fun. Bocce is only one of many games and activities available to our winter visitors.

I would like to thank everyone for making this a huge success!

KEYCARD INFORMATION

In 2019 we have enacted new pro-cedures regarding our key card sys-tem and the number of key cards that will be issued. It is important for this measure to be taken so that the Oceanside Security team can maintain a safe environment for our homeowners and guests by restrict-ing unauthorized individuals from entering our community. This new policy should reduce the liability for Oceanside and homeowners on a daily basis. All visitor’s vehicles must have a pass to enter into our private community. Please remem-ber KEY CARDS ARE NOT A PASS TO GAIN ENTRANCE.

As the resident of a gated communi-ty, it should be important to you that the lease and amenities you are pay-ing for are not being taken advan-tage of by unauthorized individuals. Oceanside has begun to notice an increase in the number of outsiders using our pools, beachfront parking lot, and other amenities. Rules, such as these, are established to provide better services to our homeonwers and, hopefully, to encourage you to assist Oceanside in their effort to maintain a safe environment for all its residents.

Homeowners - will be issued two key cards at no charge and will be allowed to purchase two additional key cards for family. A non-refund-able fee of $10.00 will be charged for these additional cards. There will be no refunds or exchanges of 2018 cards under this new policy and once the maximum card limit of four keycards has been reached, no further cards can be purchased for a residence until the following year.

Snowbirds - must have the proper OSV decal displayed on their vehicle and may purchase one key card per vehicle for $20.00 with a $10.00 refund upon return of the key card.

Vacation Renters - may pur-chase two key cards per residence. A $20.00 fee is require per key card with a $10.00 refund upon return of the card at checkout.

Frequent Visitors - Frequent vis-itors must have the proper decal dis-played on their vehicle and are not eligible to obtain a key card.

Multi-Day Passes - Multi-day passes are not eligible to purchase a key card under any circumstances along with day passes or guest pass-es.

Under no circumstances shall key cards be given to unauthorized in-dividuals by homeowners, renters, snowbirds and/or visitors.

1st violation - $50 fine2nd violation - $100 fine and loss of card privileges for six months.3rd violation - No access to key cards for a period of time determined by management.

FRIENDLY REMINDER

We are an animal friendly commu-nity. If you are out walking your dog and it needs to go (whether it’s in a yard or on the side of the road) please be courteous of others and pick up after your animals.

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIESCOORDINATOR

Oceanside Village is in need of someone to work this summer with the children’s activities. This would be a great opportunity for a college aged individual who is looking for summer employment. Please con-tact the OSV office if you are inter-ested.

The meeting was followed by social time with refreshments and games with prizes - most of which were red or purple!

RED HAT WINE ANDCHEESE PARTY

By Bobbie Gillespie

On Thursday afternoon, January 17th, the Village Red Hat Chicks held their Wine and Cheese Party in the OSV community center. This annual event is a re-organizational meeting for the group which pro-vides time for members to conduct a brief business meeting and decide upon disbursements of monies col-lected for charity at the monthly functions held throughout the year. The two charities selected by ran-dom drawing this year were the Community Luncheon program conducted by Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church and Freedom Fi-dos program which rescues dogs from shelters, task trains them to be service dogs and provides them free to Veterans and First Responders.

During the meeting there was also an opportunity for members to vol-unteer to be hostesses during the upcoming year. Two hostesses se-lect a month for which they plan and organize the activity for that month. Activities range from attending lo-cal theater performances to touring local TV stations and even having breakfast in our pj’s.

2018 ANNUAL COMPANYAWARDS LUNCHEON

On December 6th, Dennis Per-menter hosted a company-wide awards luncheon at the Texas Road-house Restaurant in Murrells Inlet.

Employees from Riptide Beach Club, Tupelo Bay Villas, Tupelo Bay Golf, Oceanside Village, Harbour View, Sleep Inn, Rose Real Estate and In-digo Property enjoyed a delightful lunch and visiting with those from the other branches of the company.

COMPLIANCEBy Kristin Gouker

Now is the perfect time to start plan-ning for the Spring. A good start is getting your home pressure washed. There are so many benefits of pres-sure washing your house. Here are a few examples:

- Adds several years of life to your home.- Removes mold and mildew, which are damaging to both your home and the health of your family.- Increases your home’s curb appeal. If you are planning to sell your house soon, you will want to in- crease your curb appeal.- You will feel proud of your house. When your home is clean and well maintained, it can increase your mood dramatically and also make you feel great about yourself.

You should pressure wash your house twice a year. Curb appeal al-lows your home to stand out from other homes. Many of the actions taken to improve curb appeal can be completed faster and more thor-oughly using a pressure washer. Boosting curb appeal is often done by shaping up the condition of the driveway and bordering sidewalks or by cleaning unattractive mildew off of the home’s exterior. Another major benefit of pressure washing is that it helps to maintain not just the cleanliness but also the beauty of the

house. Without mold, mildew and other kinds of persistent particles, the driveway, lawn, garage and roof look better and more maintained.

Please join me in continuing to make Oceanside Village a great place to live!

SOUTH STRANDLIONS CLUB

By Annie Cutway

On January 26, 2019, the South Strand Lions Club held its annual charity dance in the Oceanside Vil-lage community center. Over 200 people were in attendance. the evening featured music by the Paul Grimshaw Band. A 50 inch televi-sion was raffled, as well as a crate of wine. Also a 50/50 raffle was held that produced a substantial mon-etary reward for the winner and the club.

The profits of this fundraiser will be used in a wide variety of ways that will promote the goals of both the local club and Lions Club In-ternational. Locally we provide vi-sion screening for hundreds of area school children. Throughout the year, the club is approached by both children and adults who cannot af-ford eye exams, glasses and hearing aids. After reviewing these requests, those in need are referred to testing which can provide them with the equipment they need.

In recent years, contributions have gone to local disaster relief after Hurricanes Matthew and Florence. The Lions Club also donates to the St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank and

SOUTH STRANDLIONS CLUB(continued)

Help 4 Kids. The Leader Dog Pro-gram benefits from the fundraising also. The South Strand Lions Club provides college scholarships to se-niors at local high schools, while the art program at St. James Middle School helps promote the annual Peace Poster competition.

Visitors to Oceanside Village who would like to attend a meeting or join our club should contact me. Meetings are held every second and fourth Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Dick Pond Civic Center in Surfside Beach.

THE ARK PLANTATION

The Ark Plantation was the home of John M. Tillman. The plantation consisted of approximately 3,200 acres of land and covered much of what is now Surfside Beach.

There are no records in Horry County of a deed for the property. It is possible that the Tillman family received a royal grant for the prop-erty prior to the American Revolu-tion. If there was a royal grant, a record of this is in Charleston. If Tillman acquired the land between the revolution and 1801, a deed was likely recorded in Georgetown. Any deed recorded there was sent to Co-lumbia during the war between the states and destroyed by Sherman’s troops when Columbia was burned.

The first evidence of Tillman liv-ing in what is now Surfside Beach is from the Robert Mills Atlas of 1820.There is also a survey of John Till-man’s plantation recorded in Horry County. The map indicates a total of 3,194 acres stretching from the Atlantic Ocean about three miles inland and with about one and one-half miles on the ocean front. This map shows the plantation house, several outbuildings and cleared fields. The home stood until the middle part of this century. Accord-ing to an article by John Thomas

GHOST STORIES

Of all the tales told over time, the ones most dear to Myrtle Beach na-tives are ghost stories. The most en-during folklore figures are of Alice Flagg, ghost of the Hermitage , and the Gray Man. According to leg-end, Alice Belin Flagg (1833-1849) roams beside the waters of Murrells Inlet...searching for a ring she re-ceived from a young man her fam-ily did not approve of. As she lay in bed ill with a fever, her brother dis-covered the ring on a ribbon around her neck, became enraged and flung it into the inlet - and it is said that she still combs the creekside in pur-suit of the lost treasure.

The story of the Gray Man also in-volves a tragic love story - as a sol-dier returns home to marry his sweetheart. Riding on horseback, he has an accident and is killed. His spirit, however, lives on, and he is able to warn his lover of an ap-proaching hurricane and saves her life. Since that time, many people have reported seeing the Gray Man before a hurricane and heeded his ghostly warning to seek safety.

LAUNDRY

THE ARK PLANTATION(continued)

(in the fall of 1982) Tillman owned 57 slaves in 1850. His main crop was sweet potatoes and he produced 3,000 bushels annually. One hun-dred ninety acres were used for the production of rice.

At the time Tillman’s will was written in 1854 he apparently had no wife nor children. Nor did he at his death in 1865. Mr. Tillman was apparently quite af-fluent since he listed gifts of money, land and slaves to his brothers, sis-ters, nephews and nieces in his will. When Tillman died, the war had ap-parently taken its toll since his per-sonal property was valued at about $2,000.00. No value was placed on his real estate.

After Tillman’s death the family di-vided The Ark and eventually it was developed. It was renamed first Roaches Beach, then Floral Beach and later Surfside Beach. It has been written that the old plantation home was named The Ark because it sur-vived the great hurricane of 1893, however, this is not true since it was referred to as “Arke Plantation” in the inventory of Tillman’s estate compiled in 1867. The Ark was torn down in the 1960s.

ANGELS LOVE

You can shed tears because they are gone, or you can smile because they

lived.

You can close your eyes and pray they will come back, or you can

open your eyes and see all that they left for you.

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see them, or you can be

full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomor-row and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of

yesterday.

You can remember only that they are gone, or you can cherish their

memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind and feel empty, or you can do what they would want. Smile, open your

heart, Love... and go on.~~ Elizabeth Ammons

CAROLINA FORESTSHOW CHOIRBy Ruth Roth

On Tuesday, February 26th at the Oceanside Village community cen-ter the talanted students’ choral group from Carolina Forest High School performed in front of a crowded audience. They were ex-cellent singers and dancers. Their performance was outstanding as it has been for several years.

There were many Oceanside Village volunteers that donated baked goods for the students and audience after the performance. Thanks to all of you who volunteered with food for the students and the goodies afterwards. The money col-lected from the ticket sales was used to help the students towards their future competitions.

A special thank you to Krey for all his hard work in getting all the stu-dents ready for their performance.

MARDI GRASBy Madaline Jones

On Tuesday, March 5th Oceanside Village held a Mardi Gras Party. It was a great success with 132 guests attending. Karen and Karl provid-ed the music and Jason the juggler entertained the crowd. Everyone danced and had a fantastic time.

Some interesting facts about Mardi Gras:

- Mardi Gras (or Fat Tuesday) is the Christian feasting period before the start of Lent on Ash Wednes- day.- The traditional colors are purple, gold and green: purple for justice, gold for power and green for faith.- The traditional king cake, has biblical roots. During this time, kings brought gifts to baby Jesus This is where the name “king” cake comes from. The shape of the cake represents a king’s crown. Most cakes are baked with a baby Jesus inside of them. The lucky person who get the baby in their piece is supposed to host the next years’ big celebration.- It is illegal to wear masks in New Orleans except on Mardi Gras.
