Inside this issue:

Hurricane Season is Here! And our Disaster preparation team would like to update you!

Following Hurricane Harvey last year, we became very

aware that our church was not prepared for a hurricane or any

other disaster that might strike—and we were very fortunate. As

you know, Community Presbyterian Church, Island in the Son,

and St. Peter’s by the Sea Church all received significant

damage. St. Peter’s will be re-dedicating their church next

Sunday, and I’m not certain about the status of Island in the

Son. Sometime in the very near future, the team would like to

give you an in-depth look at the plans that we have organized in

the event that a disaster comes to our church.

Briefly, we have set up a plan to ensure that important

papers are secure, our property is protected as it can be and that

we have a means and method in which to stay in touch with the

members of our community.

There has not been a strong response from the congrega-

tion to:

provide us with contact information, if evacuation of

the island is necessary

a list of volunteers who would be willing to assist

the team in securing the building prior to a hurricane

or monetary donations to hire a contractor to secure

the building.

I hope you recognize that having a clear working plan

that the congregation understands and is willing to participate in

prior to any destructive event is extremely important for the

continuing life of the community, in the event that something

happens.

A date has not been set to present our plan, but it will

occur after worship sometime very soon. In the meantime,

please strongly consider filling out the disaster contact informa-

tion and giving it to your deacon.

Vacation Bible School 2018

Rolling River Rampage: Experience the Ride of a Lifetime With God!

July 9-13, 9:00a.m – 12:00 noon

Ages 4-Entering 5th Grade

This summer’s great week of fun and Christian nurture for the children of Padre Island and the Corpus Christi

area is getting closer! Through stories, songs, crafts, games, and other activities they’ll discover that life with

God is an adventure full of wonder and surprise, and they can trust God to be with them through anything.

Along the way, they’ll

experience the ride of a lifetime with God

encounter exciting Bible stories from the life of Jesus

explore God’s promises for their lives

discover ways to serve God and others

Registration is now open for students aged 4 through entering 5th grade. Paper registration forms are available

in the sanctuary, and online registration is available on the IPC website: www.islandpresby.com

We are fortunate again this year to have our PCHAS partners join us for this fun-filled week. But how can you

help? Leaders are still needed for the following positions:

Grade Level Class Leaders: stay with your class throughout the morning, go to rotation stations with them,

and be the consistent adult presence with them during VBS…no lesson planning or formal teaching involved

1st/2nd Grade 3rd Grade 4th/5th Grade

Registration Team: most of the work will be Monday morning, getting kids checked in and assigned to their

grade level groups and giving them name tags. May need a few helpers on Tuesday morning as well

Meal Providers: lunches and dinners for the PCHAS crew during VBS week, cookie and/or cupcake bakers

for mid-week student snacks

Rotation Station Leaders (leaders’ guides provided): Recreation Music

Set-Up/Take-Down Team: help decorate the sanctuary space Sunday, July 8, and clean up Friday, July 13

Stay tuned for announcements, emails, and outright begging for river rafting/camping gear items you might be

willing to lend as decorations or props for the week. What’s in your garage? rafts? inner tubes? life vests?

Ready to Keep Calm And Raft On? Join the Rolling River Rampage crew as they find Adventure, Accep-

tance, Joy, Rest, and Peace on the river! Contact Maureen Dean (206-949-3825, [email protected]) or

Sunday School Teacher Appreciation

The coming of summer marks the completion of another successful year of Sunday morning church

school for our students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. We use PCUSA’s multi-age curriculum, Growing in

Grace and Gratitude, which is rooted in the foundation of Presbyterian identity, where God’s grace and our

gratitude are the heartbeat of our faith, life, and worship. Each week, the lessons extend an invitation to

discipleship that inspires children to learn and practice hospitality, generosity, and love, encouraging them to

live their lives as an expression of God’s grace. Through Bible stories, engaging activities, prayer, and music,

our kids and their teachers gather weekly in God’s grace and learn to respond joyfully in gratitude.

None of this would be possible without the love and dedication of our 2017-18 Teaching Team: Bonnie

Ciardelli, Maureen Dean, Jill Gilmour, Grace Hahn, Hanna Kasik, and Jennifer MacQuarrie. Please extend

your gratitude to these folks and the ministry they provide when you see them!

Over the course of this school year we have lost 3 of our teachers due to family moves and other issues.

The success of our Sunday School ministry depends on adults of the congregation who are willing to be part of

the teaching rotation. With enough volunteers, each teacher is only

responsible for 2 or 3 Sundays each quarter. Lesson plans are

provided and teachers can choose their own dates to fit their per-

sonal calendars. Please prayerfully consider joining the team. It’s

a lot of fun and a great way to model to our children how IPC ca-

res for them.

Sunday School will be on hiatus throughout the summer,

and will resume again in September.

ANGELS IN APRONS

Generally when a need for providing meals for families within our IPC community arises, the Deacon who has that individual or family in his/her care group, con-tacts the other members of that specific group and the situation is resolved. There are times, however, when others wish to help and we want to include them. We can now do that since a group called “Angels in Aprons” simply formed itself! Although “Angels in Aprons” evolved spontaneously, it has been increasing in size fairly rapidly through word of mouth.

As a means of sharing God’s love, “Angels” volunteer to join care groups in providing and delivering peri-odic meals (by schedule) to individuals or families who are experiencing difficulties and appreciate re-ceiving a helping hand. The group is by no means “elite” or “closed”- it just happened and we don’t want anyone to feel “left out.” If you’d like to be added to the “Angels in Aprons” list and contribute to overall congregational care by whipping up a meal every now and then, let us know. Believe it or not, some of our “Angels” don’t even like to cook! They prefer delivering “carry out” meals and that’s okay! Others like preparing “crock pot” dishes, casseroles, & family favorite comfort foods, a few are “health enthusiasts”, and there are those that like to practice their culinary expertise preparing epicurean delicacies. As you can tell, our “Angels” live up to the expression that “variety is the spice of life.” You can join by notifying any Deacon.

Pet Memorial Wall in Chapel

We now have a special place in which to memorialize our beloved four-legged friends who have left this world and are patiently waiting for that time when God calls us to be reunited with them in our new heavenly home. On the right hand wall as you enter the Chapel, you will see a beautiful painting, by our resident artist Karen

Winship, which serves as the focal point of our pet memorial wall. It will soon be joined by an engraved plaque designating the “Pet Memorial” area and framed copies of “Till We Meet Again at Rainbow Bridge.” To honor your pet, please purchase the “pet tag” of your choice at a local pet supply store or online, have it engraved and place it on the wall below the painting. Pushpins are available nearby on the Chapel table. To preserve the dignity of the wall, it is strongly suggested that all pet tags be of “standard” size. You may wish to have the tag engraved with your pet’s first name and your last name and appropri-ate dates. That is up to you! The shape of the tag is your choice as well!

Coastal Bend Troop Support

CBTS is a non-profit organization whose mission is "Letting Our American Heroes Know We Care." Care boxes are packed on the 2nd or 3rd Friday of each month, (depending on events) and mailed to individuals serving in war zones. Purchasing and packing is done by Worker Bee volunteers who show up at the building every Wednesday and Friday from 1-3 p.m. On the weeks that we are not boxing, we are preparing purchased and donated items for the monthly box-ing. If you would like to help, the address is 1141 S. Church St. in Rockport, Texas. For more information about Coastal Bend Troop Support, contact the IPC Mission Committee or call Carla Reed, President, at 361-205-4046. You may also visit the CBTS website at: www.coastalbendtroopsupport.com.
