Missions is more than just giving of our financ-es. God invites us to join Him in His work…that means giving of ourselves and our time.

When we give of ourselves we are most like Jesus. Giddings State School is a ministry that Pete Tompkins leads every month. The clos-er they came to the prison, the more tender his heart and feelings grew.

According to Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, a promise is a declaration that one will do or refrain from doing some-thing that is specified. Mothers frequently promise to give their children a treat for cleaning their room or for behaving in the grocery store. When the child does what was asked but the mother does not fulfill her promise, the child loses faith in promises.

In the “good old days”, a promise was made with a hand-shake. The deal was made and the promise was seldom bro-ken. Today when a person buys something like a house, it takes half a ream of paperwork and at least a dozen signa-tures for the deal to be made. Even then, the deal is broken when the payments are not made.

At a wedding, the bride and groom pledge (promise) to love, honor and cherish each other until “death do us part” yet the divorce rate is approximately at 50% in America today. The promises made at the wedding do not always last.

God has many promises in the Bible. One of God’s first prom-ises was after the flood. In Genesis 9:11 He promised to nev-er send another flood and gave the rainbow as a reminder of

F ro m t he Ed i tor - P ro m is es this promise. There have been floods in recent times when peo-ple were wondering if this promise was still true, but God’s promises are never broken.

One of God’s most outstanding promises is found in Genesis 22:16-18. God promised Abraham that He would make Abra-ham the father of many nations and that He would give him millions of descendants “like the stars of the sky and the sand on the seashore”. In return, Abraham was to serve God faithful-ly and live a blameless life. God chose the Israelites to be His people. That promise continues today.

There were many times God made promises to His people in the Old Testament, but there were consequences for not obey-ing and serving Him faithfully.

The best promise that God made is found in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

In Hebrews 10:23 we read, “Without wavering, let us hold tightly to the hope we have, for God can be trusted to keep His prom-ise.”

February Business Meeting - The February business meet-ing was held on February 6th with Hollas Hoffman presiding as Moderator. The January business meeting minutes were approved as printed. Geri Kuester, Church Treasurer, went over the January Financial Report. Wanda Kaiser, Outreach Ministry Team Leader, reported that she is sending cards to visitors each week. Peter Wimberly reported that the Wednesday night ASBC Youth Group has had several new kids join. This is for 6th grade thru high school. There is Bible study, food, games and prizes. Christina Cherry re-ported that the Children’s Ministry is working on the Valen-tine’s Dinner to be held on February 14th from 6-8 p.m. The meal will consist of Grilled Chicken Breast, Italian Roasted Potatoes, Green Beans, Salad and Dessert. The tickets are $12 each. There will be a live auction and a silent auction. Auction items are needed. The proceeds from this fundrais-ing event will by used to help pay for children’s events throughout the year. Roberta Bittick reported that the Sing-ing Men of Texas will be here on February 21st at 7 p.m. Dwayne will be having supper and snacks for them. The March Fellowship Supper will be Italian. Dwayne Wise re-ported that a group from Gonzales will be here on March 31st for 5th Sunday Singing.

Magazines - Home Life, Mature Living, Stand Firm and Journey for Match are available on the table in the foyer.

We will be working with area choirs to perform the “Hallelujah Chorus” at the community Palm Sunday service on April 14th. There will be a 5th Sunday Singing on March 31st. Please let me know if you have input for that service.

F r o m Pet e r ’s D e s k Summer is right around the cor-ner! I am defi-nitely not ready for the 100° weather, but I am ready for youth camp.

I am excited to announce that

we will be attending Student Life Camp at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. Student Life puts on the best camp around.. Everything they do is high quality. From the camp pastor to the worship leaders, everything is done at a high level with the goal of leading students to Christ. Camp will be July 22nd-26th so mark it down on your calendar. The cost is $300, but don’t worry - we have fundraisers! The Salad Lunch is coming up on March 25th. More information will be coming out soon. Students and parents who work will be “paid” base on the number of hours worked to cover part of the cost of camp. Don’t let camp sneak up on you!

T h e M ai l B ox Dear ASBC Family,

We send our heartfelt gratitude to you for your prayers before and after the birth of our grandson Luke. We know that God listens, hears, and answers our intercessory prayers. What was a very critical condition was administered by God’s heal-ing hands, and He gave us the answer we prayed for. Luke’s parents, Brad and Lyndsey, are eternally grateful for your love and prayers, and they give God the glory.

Luke and his family are now back home in California, and he is thriving at six weeks old!

Dwayne and Monica Wise

Members of Austin Street Baptist Church,

Just a short note to thank all of you for praying for me. I was deeply touched. I believe in prayer and I know I am in God’s healing hands.

Thanks again, Renita Ondrusek

Thank you for praying for our family. Austin Street Baptist Church holds a special place in our hearts.

The Family of Robert Jacobs (Joyce Wilkerson Jacobs, Janet Jacobs Absher, Randall Jacobs and Linda Jacobs Sternadel)

Dear Friends at Austin Street Baptist Church,

Thank you for thinking of me and praying for my healing. It brings me comfort to know that you care. The power of prayer is mighty, and it’s what I need most.

Thank you again, and please don’t stop praying.

Kindest regards, Kim Reeves

Dear Friends at Austin Street,

Thank you so very much for your prayers and the Prayer Sheets from December 5th and 19th. Thank you to my special friend Diane Greer for asking for your church’s prayers. Thank each and every one who signed the Prayer Sheets! Your prayers are such a comfort to me, and I know personally that prayers are answered.

My right hip replacement surgery has been postponed due to elevated liver enzymes and an enlarged bile duct. I am to undergo further endoscopic procedures on February 28th. My January 7th endoscopic ultrasound showed a normal pancre-as - and that’s an answered prayer!

Thank you so much for your continued prayers!

Debbie Van Eaton

Thank you for your kindness, thoughts, and prayers.

Dana Weber & family

Austin Street Baptist Church,

Thank you for all the prayers. They were greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

We had a fantastic turnout at our February 17th blood drive! The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center collected 22 units from us and reported that they will be able to help 66 patients with those units. We appreciate everyone who supported the blood drive in any way. Please mark your calendars for the next ASBC blood drive on June 23, 2019.

The guest speaker for L.I.F.T. on Jan-uary 26th was Tammy Hartmann from Victoria. She followed the theme for the meeting of “Guided by the Spirit” by using G.P.S. (God’s Positioning System) for her inspirational theme. For God’s positioning system, there is His Perspective - the way He wants us to look at the world; Positivity - focus on the positive and encourage each other; People; Promises - claim

God’s promises; Plans and Purposes - be flexible and be prepared; Prayer - critical to have two-way communication with God; and Peace - knowing you are in God’s will. Tam-my shared how G.P.S. helped her through her battle with lymphoma and the treatments at M.D. Anderson. All those in attendance were blessed by her sharing her story.

The next L.I.F.T. will be held on March 30th at 9:30 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. For more information about L.I.F.T., contact Ann Knowlton at 361-649-0708.

Spaghetti Sauce from Linda Cooper

1 lb. hamburger meat 1 6-oz. can tomato paste 1 6-oz. can water 1 8-oz. can tomato sauce 1 can crushed tomatoes 1 small can mushrooms 1 medium onion, chopped 1 tsp. oregano 1 tbsp. lemon juice 1 tbsp. chili powder 2 tbsp. brown sugar 1 clove garlic, chopped fine (or 1/8 tsp garlic powder) 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

1/8th tsp. pepper 1 tsp. salt

Brown hamburger meat and onion. Drain off grease. Add sea-sonings and liquids. Simmer about 1 hour. Serve over cooked spaghetti or mix in with cooked spaghetti.

(Note: At my house, the meat sauce and spaghetti have to be served separately since Lisa likes more sauce with less spaghetti while Brandon prefers more spaghetti with a small serving of sauce.)

The Singing Men of South Texas were a blessing to everyone Thursday night. There were approximately 285 folks in attendance mak-ing it a FULL house. The group led in worship with 14 songs in a variety of worship styles. The di-

rector, Larry Danks, Minister of Music at Trinity Baptist Church in Kerrville, did an outstanding job. Most of the men are music ministers in churches around South Texas.

The Singing Men of South Texas formed in 1975 and is one of six groups that comprise The Singing Men of Tex-as, sponsored by the Baptist General Convention of Tex-as.

Prior to the evening performance, the men were treated to a fish fry in the fellowship hall. Bro. Dwayne provided the fish and ASBC volunteers fried it along with French fries and hush puppies. The Kitchen Com-mittee was hostess for this event.
