Dear Parents, Staff and Girls

W elcome back to the final term of the year. Term 3 ended with Jenna Viney, an Old Girl of the

school, addressing the Grade 12s at their Prize-Giving. Jenna lives by the motto, “limitations inspire the imagi-nation” and she manages to combine her passions for adventure and cooking, travelling all over the world. During the holiday, Cathy Thomson took the newly elected prefects to Muden to put Servant Leadership into practice. The girls interacted with a group of 30 pupils from Elan-geni Pre-Primary School. They played games with the pupils, includ-ing musical chairs, allowing the pu-pils to play various musical instru-ments. Activities also included arts and crafts as well as various sporting events.

T he Grade 11 girls did a won-derful job in refurbishing the Grade RR classroom by painting the whole class-

room and painting a mural on the back wall. With the help of Humboldt Cilliers, the girls hung up curtains and put up shelving. They also dec-orated the classroom with posters that they had taken with them. Other people in the community benefited from generous donations of clothing from TWC families. Thank you to all those who donated various items and a big thank you to Lee Cilliers who helped to coordinate the project. The girls worked really hard and felt that they had achieved something worthwhile. There is still a lot that can be done in the community and we hope to be able to continue work-ing out there. The Grade 12s for 2013 were induct-ed on Saturday and I am looking forward to working with them.

L ast Thursday the Grade 12 Boarders had their farewell lunch and on Monday even-ing, the Grade 12 Art Exhibi-

tion was opened. Louise Hall, who is an Old Girl of the school and mother of Sarah Lax (a Grade 12 pupil), was the Guest of Honour. Louise is a well-known artist who exhibits her work both nationally and internationally. She is currently registered for a prac-tice-led PhD at the Centre for Visual Art, UKZN, and her travelling exhibi-tion, Fine Lines, is currently on dis-play in The Gallery, Grande Pro-vence, in Franschhoek. The girls have spent many hours working on their various pieces and the art is of a very high standard. Today, all Grade 12s celebrated their last official school day. We said our final farewells at their Valedictory Service this morning and we wish them all the best for their exams.

Community Outreach in Term 4 The newly appointed Community Outreach Committee would like to make gift packs to distribute to all the projects we have supported this year. We appeal to pupils and parents to support us in this endeavour.

To make sure we have enough goodies for support staff, children’s homes, the elderly and other outreach projects such as the Chil-dren’s Ward at Grey’s Hospital; Vezokuhle projects: Reading and Writing and TEP; as well as Ethembeni Centre in Mphopolmeni, Howick, we would like to ask each grade to be responsible for certain items.

There are also some items that anyone can donate. We have 35 support staff to whom we would like to give a food parcel for the Decem-ber break. It has also been brought to our at-tention that many young adolescent girls in the projects we support often miss school be-cause of monthly female problems. As we are in an all girls’ school, an appeal like this will be understood: packs of sanitary towels and un-derwear for girls aged 10-13 years. These may be placed in collection boxes in the girls’ change rooms or in my classroom. Gift packs will be distributed after the end of the exami-nation period. JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

T he fourth term of the year is always a very exciting one for the Junior School. Not only is there a sense of pur-

pose and exhilaration as syllabi and assessments are completed, but there is also much to look forward to as the end of year functions draw closer. Good schools create a climate for engaging the mind and the imagina-tion, in the hope that young people will grow up as independent, flexible and creative thinkers who are com-mitted to the ideal of building a better world. Labour unrest, social tension and violence in recent weeks has certainly disturbed the equilibrium of many of us.

BIKING Congratulations to Sara Ryan who once again rode very well

and was placed third in the Highbury Mongoose Schools race. Sarah also received a trophy for coming third in the Mongoose series (15 girls com-peted).

SWIMMING TWC hosted the first gala of the term on Tuesday 16 October. All ten lanes were used.

TENNIS Congratulations to Yasha Nair and Milan Comley who have been selected to play in the KZN Mini Tennis Tournament. This is a huge achievement and we wish them well. The Tournament will be played on 21 - 28 October.

SQUASH Our TWC girls played Eston boys on Monday 15 October and beat them 11- 1. Well done, girls.

I am proud to say that our "B" team were placed 6th and our "A" team were placed second (until the se-cond last event, our "A" team had the same number of points as Merchiston). Well done, girls. Thank you to all who assisted at the Gala. We will be hosting a further Gala on Friday 19 October. This will be an "A" Gala and will start at 17:00. In this gala, our girls will team up with the Cordwalles boys and com-pete against some local schools and a touring team from Dainfern in Gauteng. Gaynor Weir

WATER POLO The juniors played in a preseason water polo festival at St Anne’s over the weekend. Their first match against Epworth was evenly matched. The final result was 2 – 1. The team played against an Invita-tion U15 team and St Anne’s. They lost both but gained invaluable expe-rience.

SWIMMING During the September school break Tara-Lynn Nicholas participated in two legs of the FINA World Short Course Championships.

In Dubai she qualified for three breaststroke finals finishing just out of the medals in 4

th position in the

50m event. From there she travelled with the team to Doha. Again she made finals in three events finishing 5

th in the 100m and 50m events and

6th in the 200m breaststroke race.

Many of us were lucky enough to catch Tara-Lynn’s events on televi-sion and social networks were abuzz each time she swam. Well done, Tara-Lynn.

CANOEING Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon Three of our TWC canoeists com-pleted the Hansa Fish River Canoe Marathon in the Eastern Cape during the holidays. All the girls are to be congratulated, as this two day, 82km race is a very technical with large volumes of water and very big rapids. Well done to: Holly Edmonds who paddled in a K3 (a 3 man canoe) with her father and a family friend. Sarah Harries who paddled in a K2 (double canoe) with her father. Nicole Grindlay completed the race in a K1 and was place 3

rd in the U16

girls’ section of the race and received a bronze medal.

Capitol Caterers Pope’s Canoe Upper Umgeni Inter-schools Race Last Saturday 9 TWC canoeists took part in the Capitol Caterers Pope’s Canoe Upper Umgeni Inter-schools Race hosted by Epworth. The river was quite low so the girls had to take special care when navi-gating the rapids to avoid rocks. They all did very well and had an enjoyable afternoon on the river. A number of the fathers also jumped into boats and paddled down the river to help and encourage the girls.

BASKETBALL The basketball season was filled with mixed results. We have no-ticed an all-round im-provement in our win percentages and two teams, namely U14A and U16A, have had fantastic seasons. A highlight was also vic-tory over St Anne’s in the B Division of the First Team Inter-Provincial Tournament hosted at Girls’ High where neutral umpir-ing made all the differ-ence. Next year we have a much clearer vision on how to con-tinue to improve.

HERE ARE THE SEASONS RESULTS:

CANOEING RIVER PROFICIENCY TESTS Last week 8 canoeing girls went to the upper Umgeni River (near Albert Falls Dam) to complete their river proficiency tests. They were required to paddle in a single canoe over a weir and manoeuvre the canoe through a rapid, making turns and getting themselves back to the river bank. They also had to capsize their canoe in the rapid and successfully navigate themselves and the boat to the side of the river and empty the water out. This was quite a challenging exer-cise but all our girls managed and passed the test.

WATER POLO Water Polo season got underway with a pre-season trip to the South Coast where we participated in Scottburgh High’s annual Water Polo festival. Our morning started at Toti Beach where we did land drills and team-building exercises on the beach. We spent a quality hour at the Waterworld, racing one another down the various slides and soaking up a few spring rays after a week of rain in PMB. After we had eaten an early lunch we were ready for action in the pool.

Our first match was against Toti High; combinations and goal keepers were tested – unfortunately we lost a game we could have won with a bit more practice under our belts. Se-cond up was tournament favourites, Scottsburgh High, against whom we secured a two-all draw. Our final match against St Charles B saw our stronger swimmers outswim the boys in a thrilling 5 – 4 victory. Fun and laughter prevailed through-out the day with most agreeing to return in 2013.

The following girls are now river pro-ficient and will be entering inter-schools river races next term: Han-nah Moor, Katherine Barry, Emma Moor, Amanda Peake, Linda Sithole, Courtney MacKenzie, Holly Ed-monds, Cailin Harries. SHONGWENI FLAT WATER CANOE RACE (12 SEPTEMBER) The Inter-Schools Flat Water Canoe Race was held at Shongweni Dam last Saturday.Despite the cold and the pouring rain all the girls complet-ed the race in good spirits and in very good time.

For most of these girls it was their first Inter-Schools Canoe race, and they all had a great morning on the water.
