Will he make it? Who will he be up against? What will happen? Will the expert topic be his undoing or will the general knowledge section be a killer? These are the questions that will be answered on Monday 23 September when the semi finals of Mastermind are screened on SBS TV at 6pm. As you know, Mr Troy Eggleston, one of our Science teachers, made it through to the semi finals of this revamped quiz show. With the expert topic, this time, World Chess Championships 1948 – 1993”, prior to a round of general knowledge questions, all will be revealed on Monday! Following this, there will be the final on Friday 27 September on SBS, with a new time of 7.30pm for a one hour special. Again, we dont know if Troy will be in the final - but we are certainly hopeful. I urge you to watch. I suspect that you wont be disappointed by the skills and knowledge of all contestants, together with the thrill of watching one of our very own. Go Troy!

NAPLAN NAPLAN results for Year 7 and 9 have finally arrived in the school – with the media having a first glance at results at least a fortnight prior - but individual student results for distribution will arrive very soon. We will certainly keep you in the loop on this. Early observations are that the school has performed well, in keeping with trends over previous years. For example, in Reading, 44% of students in Year 7 and 9 were in the top or second top band (compared with 38% in 2018) and in Numeracy, 54% of Year 7 and 9 were in the top or second top bands (compared with 45% in 2018). Suffice to say, our results are important in informing us of the kind of support for growth and excellence that we want to pursue. I note that in 2018 our growth from Year 9 to the Higher School Certificate was in the “Excelling” category. These results for 2019 are not published yet but because we place great emphasis on improvement in the HSC there is an expectation that we will meet the same high standard of growth. We will keep you informed as the information trickles in.

State Dance Festival Dance is a prominent part of our wonderful CAPA faculty and loved by many in the school. In no small measure, the State Dance Festival was an opportunity for some of our dancers to showcase their talents, yet again. Ruby Keast performed in an ensemble and was apparently stunning. As well, Emma Geny, Skye Thadanabath and Aisha Baur performed in the Dance Off Troupe with great finesse. Mrs Judy Leeds-Roberts was instrumental in seeing these students realise their dreams in performing on the ”big stage”. Thank you Mrs Roberts.

CHS Athletics The Combined High Schools Athletics Carnival is a very big meet, drawing together the finest student athletes in high schools in the state. This year Castle Hill High School did exceptionally well, as evidenced by the following stunning results. The following students gained first places: Joshua Atkinson – 1st in 200m, 1500m, 4X400 relay Sally Shokry – 1st in shot put, discus, relay Pyper Marchant – 1st in shot put, discus, relay Joelle Tham – 1st in relay Ava Jones – 1st in relay Olivia Bloem – 1st in relay The following students gained second places: Connor Munns – 2nd in Triple Jump Olivia Bloem – 2nd in 800m Pyper Marchant – 2nd in age group overall The following students gained third places: Olivia Bloem – 3rd in hurdles Zara Munroe – 3rd in 4X 400 relay Congratulations to all students. They represented the school and the region so very well.

Year 12 - adieu It’s the last leg for the Year 12 class of 2019. Next week they will engage in important rituals that commemorate their schooling and relationships here at Castle Hill High School. We begin on Wednesday 25 September with a Farewell Assembly in front of the school. Speeches, skits, reminiscing, funny films, music and fun characterise this walk-down memory lane. It’s one of the annual highlights for the entire school. On Thursday 26 September we formalise proceedings with a graduation for Year 12 students, their parents and teachers starting at 9am. This is a formal ceremony marked by presentations and formal speeches followed by “the big morning tea” – only for 1,000 people – and catered by our magnificent Hospitality staff who really don’t stop! I’m assured by them that they love it! Again, these rituals are an important way for the school to pay tribute to members of the “small country town”, to create memories and wonderful experiences that will remain for a long time. Then of course there is the formal, this year at Doltone House in the city on Thursday 26 September in the evening. Again, that’s a special time for us all. Can I pay tribute to Year 12. What a year group they have been. I will remember them so fondly and wish them well in their new careers, educational opportunities and unknown ventures. It’s always such a pleasure to work with, see growth, and maturity and watch the progression from youth to adult. Please accept my warm regards.

Holiday travel I have the opportunity to travel to Italy and France in the school holidays as well as for the first three weeks of term 4. I feel very fortunate to do this. In my place will be Jen Dane, whom I know will do a terrific job in meeting your needs.

2019-2020 YEAR 12 MENTORING FOR BOYS

I am writing this letter to all the parents/guardians of boys who are about to start Year 12 in term four of this year. I am in the process of selecting a new Year 12 boys’ mentoring group. All Year 11 boys will be given the opportunity to apply for this new group, but with boys being boys, they may not seek out this information and/or pass it on to you, and hence this letter. I am looking at selecting an initial group of 30- 40 boys and then working with them to improve their HSC results. We endeavour to do much more than this by showing the boys just how good they can be and then using it as a springboard to take on further challenges throughout their lives. It will mean that the boys will have to change their Pastoral Care class and meet with me each day in Pastoral Care. They will have to organise a fortnightly personalised interview time with me from their study periods or before or after school. The boys need to have a commitment to working hard and the desire to be the best student they can be. I will help them to work harder and smarter. You are welcome to nominate your son through emailing me on the address below or you can contact me if you have any questions. Thank you. Peter Kerrigan 9634 4199 [email protected]

AFL Success

Tim Organ. A familiar name throughout our school, and there’s a good reason why. This bloke is like no other. He is one of only 3 boys remaining in the U17’s NSW GWS Giants Academy, which is a mean feat alone, not to mention he was also one of only 24 players selected to play for the NSW RAMS in 2018. Tim aspires to be selected for this team two consecutive years in a row, as part of his ultimate goal: to get drafted into the AFL. Being a midfielder/winger, it is expected that Tim be one of the fittest players on his team, hence his relentless training schedule which consists of 4x 2hour fitness and skill sessions out on the footy field, and 3x 90minute gym sessions, every single week. Not even a broken thumb in 2018 was able to stop Tim from doing what he loves and inching closer and closer to his dream career. So keep an eye out when the time comes for the 2020 NAB AFL Rookie Draft, as we just might see the unmistakable haircut and cheeky smile of the one and only, Tim Organ.

YEAR 12 INDUSTRIAL TECNOLOGY MAJOR WORKS COMPLETED FOR 2019

Congratulations to Year 12 Industrial Technology Timber and Metal students for their fabulous ef-forts in completing their major projects. It takes organisation, commitment and a lot of hard work to succeed in producing quality major projects. Students and staff should be most proud of their achievements and deserve congratulations on a job well done. The pictures below show the high level of craftsmanship and creativity that culminated in a vast range of quality major works. Whilst the major works are complete students have no time to relax as they now must focus on the theory behind the practical skills in order to prepare for the Higher School examination in this subject. Article: Helping your child avoid being cyberbullied

Cyberbullying of children and teenagers is one of the greatest fears facing parents today. The thought of their child being subjected to heinous words, threats to their physical safety, as well as their social and emotional wellbeing, is something no parent wants their child to experience. Most of the bullying behaviours we now see are happening from behind a keyboard, playing out in social media feeds and gaming chat rooms. It is little wonder parents feel overwhelmed and out of their depth, especially when for most, online is an environment that is relatively unfamiliar. So what can we do to help our kids avoid these types of behaviours, as well as give them the skills to deal with cyberbullying behaviours should they be exposed?

Remind them of all of the things they have control over: While it may not feel like it, we have a lot of control over what happens online. We can determine who we talk to, what we ignore, what we share, how we comment, who we follow, who we block or hide from our feeds. All of that, helps us determine who is allowed to play a role in our online experiences and ultimately what behaviours we accept on our feeds

Give your child time away from the screens: Everyone needs a break from screens. We want to encourage regular times when a child doesn’t need to be tethered to their device. Building a wider community away from the screens helps a child or teen build their sense of self-worth. Keeping devices away from the dinner table also gives them a break from being socially switched on and allows them to connect with family without a device. Removing devices at night helps their active brains to switch off, and prepare for sleep.

Role play possible responses: Discuss with your child whether they should respond to bullying or nasty online comments, if they do, then consider how they could respond. Consider the statements or types of people they ignore, block or report.

Regularly check the privacy settings: Every app, game and social network has a settings button that enables you to determine how positive an experience your child can have on that platform and how much control they have. Visit these settings regularly to look at the options available

While nothing is guaranteed particularly when it comes to the online world, we can certainly be taking steps to help our kids. We can give them skills, encourage positive behaviours and thinking that allow them to minimise their exposure to the bullying behaviours of others. If your child is being cyberbullied you can also access the reporting tool at esafety.gov.au Author: Martine Oglethorpe is an accredited speaker with the Office of the eSafety Commissioner.
