From the Seneschal

Greetings to all the peoples of Abertridwr and all others who read this.

Once again a month has come and gone and we are racing towards then silly season of Demos and

events.

The next few months see something on most weekends be it demo, event or class.

Please all remember to take time out for yourselves to recoup so you do not lose the fun that you have in

the SCA.

Your participation is greatly appreciated and all efforts and contributions are welcome.

Balingup Medieval Carnivale is this coming weekend and I know it is being well supported by everyone

from all the groups here in the Western Reaches of Lochac.

On the 18th of September we have the Talk like a Pirate Day Demo at the Elizabethan Village and again

all help is valuable and welcome. (See flyer in this issue)

While we are talking about contributing to Abertridwr, I would advise that we have a couple of offices

that are currently vacant:

1. List Officer who runs the lists at Tourneys and keeps the records of the fighting for the Group

2. Constable who collects indemnities at events and keeps the peace and the indemnity forms for

the Group

3. Publicity Officer who organises publicity, and liaises for demos and organises stewards to run the

demos - Talk to Kane

If you feel that you would like to contribute to Abertridwr in any of these offices please send me an email

outlining your Mundane Name, SCA Name, Member number and expiry date and anything you may feel

is relevant. If you wish to discuss the duties of these offices, feel free to contact me either in person or by

email or phone and I will give you the details of what is expected.

We had a work day at Wandi last Sunday, 21st August, making up the additional List ropes. To those who

came, thank you, we achieved what we sought to. A number of new list ropes so our list field can now

be bigger.

Our next meeting is on Sunday September 4th, which just happens to be Father’s Day, as our policy is

that the only meetings you really have to attend is the one before reports are due, and as there is no

other Sunday when we could have it, I decided to leave it on the 4th. The only major things to be

discussed at this meeting is the Baronial Advancement and Pencampwr.

Your officers are doing a great job as always, and if you happen to see one in the pursuit of their office

maybe just a quiet thank you to let them know you see what they are doing and appreciate their efforts.

With events coming up you all need to think about who you feel is deserving of recognition, write to Their

Excellencies and to the Crown and recommend people for awards. The awards are how we show

people that we see what they are doing and we appreciate it.

If you go to http://lochac.sca.org/abertridwr and then click on Populace in the index on the left hand

side there is Awards List page of "Canon Lore" which will take you to Canon Law click on the Lochac

listing and you will find a list of the Awards given in Lochac and you can look up the meanings and

reasons for the awards there.

There is also a link to Aneala's Gentry which has an explanation of Baronial Awards. Canon Law has a

Two Anglo-Saxon Riddles

My garb is ashen and in my garments

bright jewels, garnet-coloured, gleam. I mislead muddlers, despatch the thoughtless on fool's errands, and thwart

cautious men in their useful journeys.

I can't think why, addled and led astray,

robbed of their senses, men praise my ways to everyone. Woe betide addicts when they bring the dearest of hoards on

high unless they've foregone their foolish habits

The answer to this riddle will be in next month’s

Rhol.

Last month’s answer : FIRE Riddle sent in by Lady Alianore de Essewell

“Ic eom wunderlicu wiht: ne mæg word sprecan, mældan for monnum, þeah ic muþ hæbbe, wide wombe. Ic

wæs on ceole ond mines cnosles ma.”

l am a curious creature; can not speak words or talk to men, though a mouth I have, a broad belly. I was in

a ship and more of my kinsmen.

What am I?

(answer on page 12 of the Rhol )

COLLEGE CHALLENGE Sunday September 25

Come one, come all, to College Challenge! A day of competition, entertainment and enjoyment for all!

Held between the Mighty College of Saint Basil the Great and the Corporeal College of Saint Lazarus, the

mighty colleges of Aneala have challenged each other, to determine the greatest college in the West of

Lochac!

So come, Lords and Ladies, and support whichever college you may choose; competitions will include a Rapier

Tourney, a Heavy Tourney, competitions in College-themed Sweet Baking and Crazy Hat-making, and a fun

battle that involves the utter destruction of treat-filled heraldic beasts.

If you have no preference in college, please come on the day and you may be hired as a mercenary, to help

whichever College needs the numbers!

Set up is from 8.30am on the Oak Lawn at UWA, Opening Court will be held at 9.30am.

Entry: $3 with Membership, $5 for non-members. Under-12s may attend for free.

Estimated start times:

Opening Court: 9.30am

Rapier Tourney: 10am (or when Opening Court is over. If you plan on entering, perhaps consider

wearing your fighting garb to court, so that things may start promptly).

A&S Competitions: Entries open around 10am, closing by approx. 1.30pm.

Heraldic Beast Slaying: 11.30am

Heavy Tourney: Armour on at 12, to start at 1pm.

Lunch (Potluck): 12pm until it is eaten.

Closing Court: When the Heavy Tournament and A&S competitions have been completed and judged

respectively, estimated around 4pm.

Please come along to support our colleges, and to have fun! For any extra information, contact the steward,

Seamus O'Seamuis, at [email protected].

It would be helpful for organisation if you could express your interest to Seamus if you plan on fighting, so

that the List-Keepers can know what is happening in advance.

Combat Archery Practice

I would like to invite all archers to the first combat archery practice on

Sunday October 23rd at 1pm at Wandi.

At this stage it will be a mixed practice in that not all of us are authorized or

fully armoured.

So besides having actual combat archery I plan to bring along some old

helmets and spare bows/arrows for people to use while shooting at others (I'll

be one of the targets this time) in an Agincourt run so that people can get an

idea of the differences in shooting in combat archery versus normal target

archery.

In addition, if people would let me know if they need to obtain combat archery authorisation, I'll try and

organise for marshal's to attend either this training session or the one in November.

If there is anything else you would like to do at this training session please let me know and I'll see what

can be done.

Now as to the period combat blunt. On this site - http://www.turkisharchery.info/?p=training - I found a

picture from the Military Museum of Istanbul of an Ottoman practice arrow which appears to be a leather

covered blunt.

Regards, Kilic
