PARENT TO PARENTFor Children, Teens & Young Adults with Special Needs and their Families
by Denise Gehringer, Program Coordinator
Parent to ParentOmaha
Have you heard?.... You need to get on THE LIST!
In Nebraska, parents of children with an intellectual or developmental disability often hear, “You need to get on THE LIST!” What is this list? Why are we told to get on it when my child is so young?
In Nebraska, all students that graduate from a Nebraska school are eligible for Developmental Disability Day Services at age 21. Additionally, Residential Services are available to adults in the order that they were put on the Waiting List Registry of Unmet Needs, otherwise known as “The List.” It is for this reason and because our state legislature reviews the number of people on the list to determine future budgeting, that you should get your family member on the list as soon as possible. A person with a disability can be put on the list AT ANY AGE, this includes infants.
How to request to get on the Developmental Disabilities Waiting List Registry of Unmet Needs:Call Kendra at the Department of Health and Human Serves 402-471-8720 and request an application for the Waiting List Registry for your child. She will mail you the Division of Developmental Disabilities Eligibility Application. It primarily has questions about the person with disabilities, a check list of documentation that may be needed to confirm the diagnosis and consent for them to request this info from doctors, schools, psychologists etc. There should not be any questions about family income as it is not a factor in becoming eligible.
You might ask; “How will residential services benefit my family member with intellectual or develop-mental disabilities? Residential services can range from support in the home, services that assist the person with disabilities to gain independent skills and also supporting a residence other than the family home.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT!
Tanya Pietron and Fear LiathThe Art of Imagination’s latest theatre production premiered at the Blue Barn Theatre on February 22nd, 23rd, and 24th to sold out crowds. Fear Liath, written and directed by local theatre artist Amy Kunz, is the story of the village of Dingle, Ireland. Dark spirits infest expensive fabric in the Scottish highlands and then journey to Dingle where they come to haunt the inhabitants of the small village. The project, supported in part by the Nebraska Planning Council on Developmental Disabilities and the Federal Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities funds awarded to Ollie Webb Center, Inc. by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, was well received. Funding was also provided by the Blue Stem Prairie Foundation.
Tanya Pietron, the painting instructor of The Art of Imagination, reported that the program sold $270 worth of student artwork during the three perfor-mances. “This is the most money we’ve made during one of our art sales,” she said. 60% of money received from artwork sales goes to the student artists and the remaining 40% is put into an art supplies fund. Tanya generously donates her time when selling her students’ work. “I love it,” she told me. “I love helping my students to market and sell their artwork. It helps develop confidence in their abilities as well as puts a little money into their pockets.” Tanya said that she enjoys watching her
students discover a true love of art. She continued, “I remember when I first fell in love with art. I was in grade school and our art teacher had each of us carve an animal shape into a brick which went into a section of a new school addition. My ladybug is still there, right outside the gym.”
This is only the first of many future theatre partner-ships between The Art of Imagination and the Blue Barn Theatre. There are already plans being made to create an entirely new production for next year. Opera Omaha and Love’s Jazz and Art Center have both expressed interest in joining the project. It will be a year-long endeavor, with Amy Kunz returning to direct again. The goal is to provide inclusive professional opportunities for theatre artists with and without disabilities in the Omaha metropolitan area.
