SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2015 VOLUME 10 NUMBER 2

We have wonderful news to share about the West Branch! The insurance claim is done so that we have the funds to repair the damages and replace the furnishings and materials that we lost. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen have also granted us the additional funds we requested to

upgrade the Branch! This means the branch will have the lower level repaired and we will also be installing a new, modern fire alarm and sprinkler system, a new heating and cooling system (no more window AC units!), some new exterior doors and windows, upgrading some security related issues, and painting the interior to be more cohesive. All of these changes will take time but we will make the branch

shine for our library users! Over the next few weeks library management will be working with the city’s Facility Division to put the project out to bid and hopefully we can begin renovations and upgrades in October. We thank you all for the support and we look forward to improving the branch for our community to utilize!

I hope you enjoy a wonderful fall season, and be sure to visit us at the Main Library while we reconstruct the west side branch!

THE FOUNDATION

The Manchester City Library Foundation is seeking new board members to help raise funds for the library. There is no residency requirement, we only ask that you be willing to help with fundraising

activities in a low key environment! This is a great board to get your feet wet with fundraising! For more information contact Chair Matt Johnson at [email protected]

SUMMER WRAP UP

Thank you to Reading is Fundamental, Macy’s in Bedford, and our patrons for their generous donation of books to the children room.

PAGE 10 VOLUME 10 NUMBER 2

The Manchester City Library is honored to take part in the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth’s Storybook Ball. The ball will take place on Saturday, October 3rd at the Manchester Community College. Over 20 different companies around New Hampshire will be designing tables based on one of their favorite storybooks. We chose Paddington by Michael Bond for this year’s table. This classic children’s story is about a young Peruvian bear who travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he meets the kindly Brown family, who offer him a temporary haven. This is our third year participating is this wonderful event.

For more information, visit http://chadstorybookball.org.

READING IS FUNDAMENTAL

We would like to thank the following organizations for helping to make our summer reading program, Every Hero Has a Story, a great success. Over 553 readers read 3,621 books this year! Congrats to all our “hero” readers and sponsors.

In Loving Memory: On July 28, 2015 the Manchester

City Library lost a dear member of

our family, Library Trustee Karen

Sheehan Lord. Karen served on

the Library’s Board of Trustees

since 1990 and carried on a family

tradition of service to the library.

Karen was actively involved in the

Manchester Community after her

retirement from the Manchester

School District. Her artistic style assisted us on many library

renovations and projects, including the celebration of the

Carpenter Memorial Library’s Centennial last year.

Karen was an avid gardener and the library’s grounds are home

to many plants from her gardens. Karen also served as a

Director on the New Hampshire Library Trustee Association

Board and as a Trustee on the board at the Canterbury Shaker

Village.

Her interest in mysteries was well known and many of us on the

staff have read her numerous recommendations over the years.

She has hooked many of us on new authors and she greatly

enjoyed discussing books on her visits to the library.

The library staff and her fellow Trustees will miss her presence,

her smile, her laugh and her dry sense of humor. To say it was

an honor and a privilege to have known her would be an

understatement. She will be missed but most certainly not

forgotten.
