2012/2013 is an Ideal Year for Scouting! Good packs, troops and crews like yours, are busy right now planning the most amazing program year ever for your Scouts and Venturers.

A top-quality program always includes a good mix of council and district activities, as well as fun, unique unit programs. Remember, Scouting is outing! Be sure your program features a healthy dose of great outdoor adven-tures. That includes a long-term camping program in the summer. Boy Scout troops must also offer a dynamic high-adventure program to meet the needs of its older Scouts.

The beauty of Scout programming is that no activity or adventure (if properly planned) is financially beyond any Scout’s reach. Camperships are accessible to any Scout in need in the Greater Cleveland Council. And what a resource we have in the council-wide product sale!

If your pack, troop or crew is not yet signed up to sell popcorn this fall, please sign up today. This sale is the ticket to the Ideal Year of Scouting. The Greater Cleveland Council has retained a new popcorn vendor. This year, Scouts will sell the incomparable Pecatonica River Popcorn. Wait until you taste this product! WOW! The Pecatonica River popcorn plan has met with rave reviews throughout the council. The product has been featured at the Centennial Camporee, Roundtables and summer camp. Our Scouts are sure to have their biggest sale ever with Pecatonica River!

Another change in this year’s sale includes the return of the tins. Hip, hip, hooray! New customers, as well as the wonderful patrons who have supported Scouting in the past, will be delighted with the beautiful gift tins, including those featuring heart-warming patriotic scenes, and of course, the ever-popular Browns and OSU Buckeye tins.

Sign up for the sale today, so your Scouts experience the Ideal Year of Scouting and earn their own way doing it!

Thanks for helping kids! Barry NorrisScout Executive(216) 458-8910

LOOkING FOR ADDITIONAL INCOME?2012 FALL ROUNDUPGIVE EVERY kID A CHANCE!

ROUNDUP PROGRAMS WILL HELP STRENGTHEN YOUR UNIT

Sign up nights for Tiger Cubs and Cub Scouts during September include these key elements: • Classroom presentations are made to Cub Scout age boys in first through fifth grades. • Flyers are distributed inviting boys to attend a Pack Sign-Up Night. • Packs host Sign-Up Nights to demonstrate the family fun of Cub Scouting and to register new youth and adult members. • Personal invitation from registered leaders to prospective parents.Pack Recruiting TipsAs part of your roundup planning consider some of these additional marketing tips. • Encourage Cub Scouts to talk about Scouting with their friends. Word of mouth is one of the most powerful and last-ing forms of advertising. Reward Cub Scouts with a recruiter patch if they bring a friend to join Cub Scouting. • “Show and Tell.” Encourage youth to use Cub Scouting as part of their show and tell opportunities at school. Have them bring in a Pinewood Derby car, camp photos, uniform or badges.• Develop a pack information sheet. This is your chance to brag about your pack. Include items such as time, date and place of all pack meetings, events and activities. List leaders’ names and phone numbers. Give to chartered organizations, leaders and parents to distribute.• Windows, display cases and bulletin boards. Get permission to set up a Cub Scouting display at your school, business or local library. Show off the crafts, pinewood cars and photos from your activities. • School announcements. Ask the school if you can provide a prerecorded, or do a live, announcement during the week of the joining night. Be sure to thank the school. • Web sites. Post information about your pack on the school, church or community organization Web sites. Talk with the person in charge of the Web site to get details about when to submit information and how to get it on line. • Open houses, community days, or church events. Set up a display table at all school open houses, Back to School Nights, Carnivals, community days, or other civic events. • Press releases. Submit a press release to local news-papers, radio stations, or cable TV. See recruitment kit for sample press releases. • Yard signs. Post yard signs at strategic locations just prior to your joining night. Include date, time and location of your joining night. Troop Open Houses and Scouting Outdoor Day/Scout Recruitment Weekend during October include: • Boy Scout recruitment flyers are distributed to grades six through eight.• Within areas where school rallies are not conducted, direct mail invitations are sent inviting boys to join Scouting. • Troops host open houses to demonstrate Boy Scout skills, the outdoor fun of Scouting and to register new youth and adult members. • A Boy Scout Outdoor Day or Boy Scout Recruitment Weekend can be conducted by each troop. The Scout Outdoor Day can involve competitive events. Boy Scout Recruitment Weekend gives new recruits an immediate camping experience upon joining the program. Venturing First Nighters and Open Houses during September and October include: • New sponsors mail invitations to new youth mem-bers to join their crew using the results from the career interest survey. • Existing sponsors will mail invitations to prospective new members to attend open houses. Names will come from the career interest survey and other sources. • Where appropriate, school recruiting assemblies will be conducted for career specialties not listed on the interest survey.

Joey groszek graduated from Mayfield High School in 2004, and Ohio State University in 2009, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering with a bio-molecular focus. While attending OSU, Joey participated in two summer internships with the Cleveland Clinic. The internships were very hands-on, working on the total artificial heart project, as well as the implantable bio-artificial kidney project. He also worked closely with senior level professionals and doctors who were heading the research. When they offered him a position, Joey was thrilled.

Since graduation, Joey has worked for the Cleveland Clinic as a biomedical engineer in their Renal-Nanotech-nology lab with Dr. William Fissell. Specifically, he is researching nano-technology-based approaches to replace conventional dialysis with a self-sustaining implantable device. Ultimately this could end the need for dialysis for hundreds of thousands of people suffering kidney failure. A second project examines antibiotic levels in patients on dialysis. The short term goal of this project is to improve patient prognoses when continuous dialysis is used. This, combined with other research in the lab, will possibly lead to an artificial kidney someday (15 years).

In his spare time, Joey is an avid sailor and snowboarder. During the winter months, he can be found on his snowboard on the slopes of Holiday Valley Ski Resort. In the evenings, he can be found racing out of Edgewater Yacht Club on Wednesdays, Cleveland Yacht Club on Thursdays, and participating in regattas on the weekends. On June 8, he will be sailing the Annapolis to Bermuda (750 miles) ocean race on a boat named Poco a Poco. Their progress was charted on the Web site www.bermudaoceanrace.com/race-overview/iboat-tracking.

Over the last year he has been a resident of Ohio City after leaving Mayfield, however, he recently decided to move to Nashville as his lab is transferring him to Vanderbilt University.

TM: When and where did you join Scouting? I joined as a Tiger Cub in Houston, TX, when I was five years old. When we moved to Cleveland, actually, Mayfield, I

joined Pack 461 at Millridge Elementary School. The pack was led by my current roommate’s father, Jay Hawkins. I earned my Eagle Scout Award with Troop 461 ten days before my eighteenth birthday. My father was our Scoutmaster, and a second-generation Eagle, so there was just a bit of pressure to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. The worst part was that I only needed one required merit badge and my project.

TM: What did you do for your Eagle Service project?I wanted to build something really big. I settled on a three-sided 10’ x 20’ bird blind with a roof. It was built in the Mayfield

Village wetlands located just north of Highland Road off of SOM Center Road. The Mayfield City School District donated the materials because it fit in with their environmental education curriculum. I spent a lot of Friday nights with one or two people helping on smaller pieces, then, with the help of about 20 boys and dads, we finished the major construction. I had to put on some finishing touches with a few other boys the next weekend.

TM: What did you enjoy most about Scouting?I really like backpacking and roughing it. TM: So you like camping. Can you share your favorite backpacking/camping trip? We started the trip hiking Havasu Falls in the Grand Canyon. This was a 20-mile, 3-day trip. The falls were spectacular.

The next part of the trip was hiking Mount Whitney in California which is the granite peak of the Sierra Nevada Range, located in the John Muir Wilderness and Sequoia National Park (its western face). It is the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States. We got a 24-hour permit and started our hike at 8,000 feet, which meant we had to climb just under 6,000 feet to the summit at about 14,500 feet and then back down again. This also meant we had to break camp before the sun came up and return after it set. We left in shorts, and carried day packs with lots of warm clothes since there was snow at the summit. Out of the 22 Scouts who started, only 11 of us made it to the summit and back. After a day of rest, we went surfing in the Pacific Ocean before returning home

The following year, we went to Philmont and completed a 70-mile trek. I think the thing I liked best about both trips was being pushed physically and mentally – both were so challenging but extremely rewarding. I grew as a person and use that inner strength now when trying to accomplish a challenging task. I have great memories from both trips. The spectacular scenery makes you want to go back.

TM: What skills did you learn in Scouting that you still use today?I learned how to tie many different knots and I use many when sailing. Ironically, I did not learn how to sail in Scouting. I

attended the sailing camp at Edgewater Yacht Club where I learned how to sail. Because of this my dad would not let me earn the Sailing Merit Badge at summer camp because I knew the material. I had to choose other things, probably for the better since I was a counselor-in-training for the Edgewater sailing camp when I was 15 years old.

TM: What was your favorite Merit Badge?I like roughing it and the Pioneering Merit Badge taught me the skills to make “roughing it” fun. I can always find a different

way to do things when I’m in the woods. TM: Do you have any insight on how being an Eagle Scout has impacted your career?Scouting allows so many opportunities to learn how to be a leader. That skill has allowed me to find and use my voice in dealing

with my boss; how to ask and manage specific tasks. I am confident in asking for what I need. I think my boss appreciates that quality about me - it helps set me apart from my peers in a good way.

TM: Any random thoughts about Scouting?Being an Eagle Scout puts you in a different category of character. It automatically garners more respect and more responsibility.

Others instantly know your character. When people learn of my accomplishment, their reactions are always positive.Being an Eagle Scout has definitely helped with my girlfriends, too (only one at a time). Being an Eagle instantly makes their

fathers like you!

• If you are over 70½, give the Greater Cleveland Council a gift through your existing IRA• Include the Council in your will or trust as charitable beneficiary • Name the Council as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy • Give a fully-funded life insurance policy no longer needed to the Council• Designate the Council as a beneficiary of your 401(k) plan• Give appreciated stock to avoid capital gains tax

You can designate an exact dollar amount, or use a percentage of an asset, to go directly to the Greater Cleveland Council. As the donor, you can also designate the purpose of the gift.

There is a tax benefit associated with each type of gift. We would be happy to confiden-tially discuss these benefits with you at no charge to help you achieve your objectives.

Call Development Director Culeen Carey at (216) 458-8948 to discuss or arrange a meeting.

WHAT JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE BRINGS TO YOUR UNIT 1. A framework for planning the year. • The Journey to Excellence standards are based on the results of the efforts successful units accomplish to continually improve. • If your unit plans to achieve gold or silver Journey to Excellence, you’ll have a strong and active program.

2. A method for evaluating your unit. • Journey to Excellence provides tangible measurements based on things you are likely already tracking, such as how many campouts you have, how many youth are advancing, etc., and uses simple ways to calculate your performance.

3. Guidance in areas where you might do better. • As you track your performance against the Journey to Excellence standards, you can easily see where you could improve.

4. Specific guidelines and standards of what is considered good performance. • Journey to Excellence has specific, simple measures to help you. You can easily compare what you are doing against the standards.

5. Early warning of potential problem areas. • You track any areas where your unit is not performing as you might like and have plenty of time to make corrections.

6. Recognition for good Scouting. • You can proudly receive your bronze, silver, or gold recognition for your Scouting unit for the year.

7. Benchmarking to get ideas and tips from other good units. • You can receive help and best practices in areas where other units have met the gold standard. • In the areas where you are doing well, you can give help and ideas to other units.

SAMPLE GOALS FOR NYLT PARTICIPANTS

The goals provided below are just examples of what can be considered as ways of bringing the many teach-ings presented at NYLT back to the home unit. In each case, one or more of the criteria for SMART goals are intentionally not met in the listed goals in order that you can expand on these ideas and make them SMART Goals.

There may be other needs within your troop that are not listed below, which, if they incorporate the team building, patrol/troop management and leadership skills

and teaching/evaluation tools presented at NYLT, are equally acceptable and preferable. Use the Planning Tool Worksheet from the NYLT Participant Notebook, and check it for

other tools and worksheet.• Plan activities for your unit’s next campout (games, instruction, schedule, meals, etc.)• Use Teaching EDGE at a troop/crew meeting to teach a leadership skill, knots. • Work with your patrol to develop a “Patrol Vision.” Determine the goals that will help your patrol achieve this vision. Make a plan to complete your Vision.• Plan and be Master of Ceremony for your troop’s next Court of Honor or other event.• Use “Presentation plan form” on your next presentation, use flip charts.• Plan and lead a Flag Ceremony using NYLT material (Leading EDGE), or a Scout’s Own Service at your Troop’s next campout.• Teach your patrol the different phases of Team Development. Use your compass to figure out what is your patrol’s current stage. Repeat in a month.• If Patrol Leader, use Patrol Duty roster at next three campouts. If your troop does not use patrol duty rosters, use Teaching EDGE to introduce to troop and work with SPL and SM to use regularly.• Use Teaching EDGE to teach the new Scout Patrol how to cook dinner and breakfast using NYLT meals at your next campout. Use menu planning sheets distributed during course or from other resources (Internet, troop adults, Cooking MB book).• Use Start, Stop, Continue (SSC) to evaluate a Troop meeting or campout; If troop does not use this process, using Teaching EDGE, instruct Troop/Patrol in its use and help them continue to use it.• If SPL, plan and run PLC meetings based on an agenda from NYLT, use the Troop Program Resources and other BSA publications.• If SPL, plan next month’s program using Leave No Trace (www.lnt.org) or other backpacking skills.• Use Teaching EDGE to plan and run a troop instruction on “Notes and how to keep them.”• Use Teaching EDGE to teach how to use a GPS or run a Geocache game.• Use Teaching EDGE to teach new songs learned at NYLT. Practice good communication skills.• Plan and lead a troop campfire at next campout. Use campfire program planner form.• Plan and lead a troop instruction on the use and safety of backpacking stoves. Use material in your NYLT Participant Notebook.• Use Teaching EDGE to teach troop how to plan a menu and purchase food for your next campout.• As a leader, demonstrate “leading by example” as demon-strated at NYLT (full uniform, on time, meeting agenda, take notes, communicate, etc.)• Plan and conduct a troop Leadership Training with other NYLT trained youth. • Use Leading EDGE in guiding patrol or PLC thru a task. Demonstrate the proper leadership style for at least two of the four stages of team development.• Create a vision for the troop with the support of the PLC and adults.• Create a set of SMART goals based on a Vision that you have shared with your Scoutmaster and PLC.

WHY? Everything we do in Scouts is because WE BELIEVE in helping youth learn to become good citizens, better people and better leaders. As Baden-Powell said, “all Scouters should set the example and be trained.”

“Success in training the boy depends on the Scoutmaster’s own personal example.”Lord Robert Baden-Powell

HOW? The first portion of the Wood Badge course uses a classroom approach with practical exercises to teach the essentials of leadership and how to best use a model Scout unit program. You will learn what makes leadership work for you in Scouting and in your personal life.

The second half of the course offers an outdoor experience with classroom modules to help you learn the application of the leadership skills unique to BSA units. There will also be a group meeting or two that you will need to attend in between weekends. Your group will set that schedule. You will also write and complete a “Ticket”. Successful completion of the course will be your attendance at both weekends, in their entirety, as well as the completion of the Ticket process.

Our staff is committed to guide you and help you succeed! We will provide you the necessary support and encouragement to complete the instructional course as well as your Ticket. Upon completion of your Ticket, you will receive the Wood Badge Recognition, including the neckerchief, woggle, Wood Badge beads and Certificate of completion.

What do you need to succeed? An up to date BSA physical, personal camping equipment, a desire to learn, an ability to have fun, a commitment to apply what you learn and your registration.

WILDERNESS ENGINEERS WEEkEND You could not have asked for a more perfect weekend to spend time at Beaumont Scout Reservation than May 4-6,

2012. The weather was perfect, and allowed 106 volunteers to contribute their time and talents to getting Beaumont ready for another summer of Scout camping. Projects ranged from masonry work to tree and limb removal, painting, carpentry, and mowing. A 1,200 acre camp like Beaumont Scout Reservation takes a lot of work to stay in working order, but working order is just not good enough. Beaumont Sizzles!!! And that is just what Jim and Gilda Conkey, coordinators of Wilderness Engineers Weekend, inspired.

So if you missed the opportunity to come out in May, no worries. Mark your calendar NOW for October 5-7, 2012. Take this chance to make Wilderness Engineers Weekend a part of your unit’s or company’s annual volunteer schedule.

July 26-29, 2012

Avast me hearties…… Pirates come ashore at Beaumont! Summer 2012 will see pirates taking refuge at the Cub World Fort. Leaders will have

to walk the plank or face their fate with a gang of Webelos pirates. What better way for Webelos to spend their summer than by searching for buried treasure? Learn how to shoot bows and arrows and air muskets from land lubbers, make your very own candle and lantern, and put to sea with your best mates!!!

This phenomenal pirate paradise won’t last long, sign up your pirate at http://gccbsa.kintera.org/wrc2012

A TIP ON TOUR PLANSWhen do I need to complete a tour and activity plan? Times when a tour and activity plan must be submitted for council review include the

following: •Trips of 500 miles or more •Trips outside of council borders (exception: not to your council-owned property) •Trips to any national high-adventure base, national Scout jamboree, National Order of the Arrow Conference, the Summit Bechtel Reserve,

or a regionally sponsored event •When conducting any of the following activities outside of council or district events: Aquatics activities (swimming, boating, floating, scuba, etc.) Climbing and rappelling Orientation flights (process flying plan) Shooting sports Any activities involving motorized vehicles as part of the program

(snowmobiles, boating, etc.); or At a council’s request (Contact your local council for additional guidelines or regula-

tions concerning tour and activity plans; many have set guidelines for events or activities within council boundaries such as for Cub Scout overnight camping.)

Regardless, the tour and activity plan is an excellent tool that should be included in preparation for all activities, even those not requiring it. It guides a tour leader through itineraries, travel arrangements, two-deep leadership, supervision qualifications, and transportation.

ARE YOU THE BEST ANGLER IN NORTHEAST OHIO?

On Saturday, August 11, 2012, Scouts from all over will be taking the challenge to see who can catch the most and biggest fish. If everyone were a record setting angler it would be called CATCHING, not fishing.

Three different divisions will be set for this tournament / instruction. Designed to give Scouts the opportunity to earn the Cub Scout Fishing Belt Loop and Pin and the Fish-ing Merit Badge, Scout Fishing Frenzy is not your ordinary event. Not only can Scouts earn advancement, but they can also earn trophies and prizes in a variety of categories for each division.

SCHEDULE 7:30-8:30 a.m. Registration 8:00 a.m. Breakfast 8:45 a.m. Flag Ceremony 9:00-11:30 a.m. Fishing Derby Open 12:00-1:00 p.m. Lunch 1:00-5:00 p.m. Fishing Derby Open 5:15 p.m. Flag Ceremony 5:30 p.m. Dismissal

HALLOWEEN WEEKENDThis October, Cub Scouts will have a hauntingly good time at Halloween Weekend.

BEAUMONT SCOUT RESERVATION’S WISH LIST FROM CARL G. BOYLES, CAMP DIRECTOR

In the past, this article of the Trail Marker has been devoted to asking for things such as hammers, bolts, rifles, rope, lumber, and other various program and maintenance equipment. Those items are nice, they are appreciated, and they are needed. However, I wanted to use this article to take this time to make a different wish… As I sit in my office at Beaumont Scout Reservation on this beautiful May day, I anxiously await staff to start arriving in a few days and Scouts to start arriving in a few short weeks. For twenty one summers, Boy Scout summer camp has been my home and I am proud and grateful to make Beaumont Scout Reservation my home.

Since arriving on December 1, 2011, I have been overwhelmed with the sense of sup-port and hope that the Greater Cleveland Council has shown me. So on to my wish, it isn’t a small one, some of you might even think that it is too large to ask for, unrealistic. Well I have always been a dreamer, so here it is my wish. The only item on my wish list is for every Cub Scout Pack, Webelos Den, Venturer Crew, and Boy Scout Troop to give Beaumont Scout Reservation an opportunity to serve as your summer camp in 2013.

So there it is… Now I know that quite a few packs, dens, crews, and troops utilize Beaumont for weekend camping throughout the year, and that is GREAT. However, nothing replaces the magic that occurs in the campsites and troop lodges, trails, program areas, and campfires. Summer camp is where memories are branded into your mind, where legends are made and were they will be handed down from Scout to Scout.

Thanks for reading an old camp director’s wish. See you at camp!Carl G. Boyles

TRONCLAVE! Tron was the theme to this year’s C4-A Conclave hosted by Ohio River Valley

Council at Fort Steuben Scout Reservation. Section C4A conducted classes before lunch with fun time in the afternoon. The evening was left for partying.

Fort Steuben is a beautiful camp of rolling hills along a lake. The camp is full of tall pines with large open areas for campsites and activity areas. The learning sessions were held in the central part of camp at the trading post, chapel, and mess hall.

The day was sunny and in the 80’s, perfect for afternoon fun. Dodge ball played with Frisbees to the Tron theme was a new challenge. Basketball, patch trad-

ing, and exploring the camp was fun. But, the fun for our Cub Scout visitors was when two Medi-Vac helicopters flew into camp. They crawled all over them as they learned about them.

The evening party was great fun, watch-ing Tron and ice cream social. A crazy auction was also held with the goal of raising a thou-sand dollars.

The next day the new section leaders were introduced. A fun time of meeting old friends, making new ones, and learning how they serve our troops and council was had by all. Mark Haas

DISTRICT DINNER HONORS DOVER’S FINESTMay 10 was not just another day in our western suburban district. It

was a day that the volunteers came together to honor several of their own. The District Award of Merit was given to curt cousineau and tim mohr. Both of these men have spent countless hours in support of our program and those that volunteer in it. We are so proud! The Hornaday Award was given out to Ship 41 for their continuous activities of excel-lence. This is an award that an outstanding ship receives nationally. The Dover Award went to Pack 207, Cubmaster eric Black. The Rockport Award went to Troop 225, led by rich noga. The West Shore Award went to outstanding Crew, Ship 41 led by richard gash. Legendary Jim Delaney, our newest Silver Beaver, was also honored. Not to be out shadowed, our newest award of PERFECT TEN, for perfect Roundtable attendance was handed out by ray Dargis to Troop 115, led by Dave acetta, Troop 729, led by Doug grimm, and Troop 225, led by rich noga.

FALL RECRUITMENT RALLY TIMESoon the school year will be upon us and it is that time of year where we can make a difference

in the lives of boys. September and early October are the times to be planning our School Night for Scouting recruitment nights. mary o’connor and John maline are excited to share the plan of how we can recruit boys into the program, but more importantly, adults as well. Now is the time to work with your district executive, Jennifer lariccia, to get a date on the calendar. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights are ideal as they can be preceded by a boy talk the day before, and flyers sent home the week before. Several units last year had record numbers as they were able to identify a School night for Scouting coordinator to work with the unit and the school in getting the word out. Several units participate in Community-Wide recruitments and we expect record numbers this year. As a gold journey to excellence award winner, our district expects to recruit over 300 new boys into the program this fall. “A well-planned program delivered by a trained leader with a strong outdoor program supported by a good commissioner, attracts and retains youth!” Be sure to make a plan to work with Jennifer, John and Mary and your unit’s school night coordinator to get solid dates set before the calendar gets full.

PIONEER POPCORN INFORMATIONThe popcorn sale is fast

approaching and all units should be ready because this will ensure a great sale this year! With a new vendor, new com-mission structure and great prizes, the sale will be better

than ever. Units should now begin thinking about pop-corn by appointing their popcorn kernels to oversee the sale. Also all unit kernels should plan to attend the August popcorn kick-off on August 23, at the Donna Smallwood Activities Center in Parma. Unit Popcorn pickups will be taking place on September 21 and November 16. Units will have to set times between 4:00 and 6:15 to arrange for the pick-up of their popcorn, both of these distributions will be taking place at Today’s Business Products in Parma.

DISTRICT TOPS FOS GOAL…AGAIN!Two Rivers District surpassed their Friends of Scouting goal on May 9, at the Good Scout Award Luncheon.

Under the leadership of Don Dzurec, Vice President of Dairymens, the district is now at 104% of goal. The Family and Community divisions headed by C.J. Nusbaum, Scoutmaster at Troop 176, St. Vincent de Paul Parish, and James Sammon, partner at the law office of Dubyak Connick Sammon Thompson & Bloom now stand at 113% and 110% respectively. David Bonifas, Northwestern Mutual, oversaw the Good Scout Luncheon division and finished at 92%. Fred Geis, CEO Geis Companies, T. J. Worsencroft, Harding & Jacob, Steven Ott, Ott & Associates, Robert Durham, President of HKM Direct Market Communications and Tim Mohr, Kiwanis were instrumental in making sure the 2012 campaign was the district’s most successful yet. The sus-tainability of Scouting rides so heavily on the shoulders of volunteers like these, and because of your help, the district will be able to meet growing needs in Cleveland. Thank you to all the workers who volunteered their time and resources.

PINEWOOD DERBY IS A SPEEDY SUCCESS It was truly a “Day at the Races” for Cub Scouts at the second annual CMSD Two Rivers Pinewood Derby

held April 21 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School where more than 50 Cub Scouts, ages 6 to 11 years old, participated in racing their cars. Each car was carefully crafted using a block of pine wood, four axles and four wheels. Between family and friends of the Scouts, the derby drew about 300 spectators. The day wasn’t all about competition as it proved to be a nice venue for the families to share in the glory and fun of watching their Scouts race their cars. “We were pleased to host and help run the 2012 CMSD Two Rivers Pinewood Derby. I was impressed with the quality of the cars and the great sportsmanship displayed by all who attended. Everyone had a great time including our volunteer staff - looking forward to helping out next year,” said Cubmaster Dominic LaCavera of Pack 541. Dominic and his wife, Sue, Paul Busser, Joanne Gibson and Scouts Joseph LaCavera and Cameron Gibson directed this year’s derby. Two Rivers District Executive, Jonathan Sweet, expressed his thanks to this year’s Pinewood Derby host, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, and specifically, the support of Pastor Fr. Walter Ptak, “who continues to support Scouting and the Two Rivers District year after year,” he said. All leaders, Scouts, parents, family members and those persons in attendance had a great day and should be proud of this meaningful Scouting experience. For race results go to tworiversgcc.com.

YEAR-ROUND GUIDE TO SCOUT RECRUITING A steady flow of youth into a Boy Scout troop is essential to maintaining the troop’s health. New Scouts

bring energy and enthusiasm to the troop program. To avoid the pitfall of shrinking membership, a troop should add at least 10 new Scouts every year. Having a year-round growth plan in place will help attract new Scouts. The first step for any recruitment effort is to appoint a troop committee member to serve as the troop member-ship chair. This person will develop and implement a year-round growth plan that incorporates all methods of recruitment, working closely with Cub Scout packs in the community, the district membership committee, and the unit commissioner.

There are three methods of recruiting new Scouts into troops:•Graduate Webelos Scouts into a Boy Scout troop.•Host a troop open house.•Encourage boy-to-boy recruiting. The year-round growth plan addresses all three methods. In this Trail Marker issue we will highlight boy-to-

boy recruiting. The most effective recruiter in Scouting is a Scout who is enthusiastic about his troop. To make recruiting a year-round plan, consider having a fall recruitment campaign within the troop. Offer incentives for each Scout who recruits one of his friends to join the troop, as well as an overall prize for the top recruiter. End the campaign after a few months so there is a definite starting and ending point to the emphasis. A candidate for First Class Scout must invite a boy to attend a troop meeting or activity. Recruiter patches are available to Scouts who recruit a friend to join his troop.

SEPTEMBER•Announce a recruitment drive in the troop. Display awards and incentives for the top recruiters.•Ask Scouts to list non-Scout friends they would like to invite to the next troop meeting as part of their recruitment drive.OCTOBER•Monitor the troop’s recruitment efforts and present incentive awards to those who have recruited a new Scout.NOVEMBER •Continue to monitor progress and recognize top recruiters.DECEMBER•End the recruitment drive and honor the new Scouts and top recruiters.
