What is Volans?

Volans is a mission-driven for-profitorganization aimed at scaling market-based solutions to social and environmentalchallenges. We develop partnerships withcorporations and social enterprises to: — create opportunities for sharing talent— spark innovation of new business models— facilitate investment in scalable solutions.

We are working towards a new generation ofsocial enterprises with the potential to bridge— and ultimately close — the great economic,social and environmental divides that posesuch a profound challenge to our collectivefuture. Our approach is threefold:

— Volans Insight researching, consulting and portfolio building.

FrontierIn the beginning…

Founded in March 2008, Volans is based in Geneva, London, and Singapore withpartnerships developing across the world. Our directors and founding partners include:

— John Elkington a co-founder ofSustainAbility in 1987, he is a worldauthority on corporate responsibility andsustainable development, author of 17 books and a Visiting Professor at the Doughty Centre for CorporateResponsibility, Cranfield University.

— Pamela Hartigan formerly ManagingDirector of the Schwab Foundation forSocial Entrepreneurship, with a 15-yearcareer leading departments in multilateralorganizations, she is a recognizedinternational authority on socialentrepreneurship and teaches in theSocial Enterprise Program at ColumbiaSchool of Business in New York.

— Geoff Lye is Vice-Chairman ofSustainAbility, a Research Fellow at GreenCollege, Oxford, and Visiting TeachingFellow at Oxford’s Environmental ChangeInstitute. He speaks regularly on climatechange and economic accountability.

— Kevin Teo previously Head of East andSoutheast Asia at the Schwab Foundationof Social Entrepreneurship and a GlobalLeadership Fellow at the World EconomicForum, Kevin has held numerous seniorpositions at Bay Area software startupsand founded Volans Asia.

Why now?

The research and work done for the book The Power of Unreasonable People (HarvardBusiness School Press, 2008), authored bytwo of our founders, made us acutely aware ofthe need to rethink and explore new horizonsand new economic and business models.

The biggest challenge we face today isgrowing and sustaining innovative solutions to the world’s economic, social and environ-mental challenges, from poverty and diseasethrough to the loss of biodiversity andaccelerating climate change. This goes beyondtalk shops and conferences and involvesdeploying the capital, the talent and thepolicies that trigger and support thewidespread adoption of these innovations.
