Here's one: The compelling invitation to pay attention, to appreciate, to savor *not only the talent and inspiration of the six fine musicians of the day, but also the feel and sounds and smells and colors of the su1try Sunday after- noon, As the music almost uncannily matched and reinforced sensual impres- slons, it somehoyv dramatized the value and riclihess of living in the moment. Associations and reminders were added bonuses: Who is this Bill Evans I keep hearing about? (I must look him up.) What about starting to play the piano again myself? (Maybe I'U dig out that old book of George Shearing ar- rangements I bought years ago.) And why can't my piano let me make those sweet, soft sounds? (This assumes that the responsibility isn't mine alone!) The images of Peg Delaney's giggling out of pure enjoyment, of Otto Gardner hugging the Bass, of Dan Dobek crouched over the keyboard, of Azaarn Hameed resplendent in a tux on this hot day -these linger too, along with a feeling of awak- ening and refreshment. MERTWETHER FEATURED IN EVEnIING OF' PIANO BLUES ALSO APPEARING IN JAZZ WORKSHOP AT LOCAL SCHOOL There's a real treat in store for those of you wh.olove Jaz-2, the Blues and a touch of Afric an-American Gospel music in your piano listening. Roy Meriwetherwho's been a featured performer at Jazz Festivals, concert halls and New York City nightclubs will appear at APFJaz.z on October 5,1990. Mr. Meriwetherwfll also appear at Steinmetz middle school in Schenectady on October 4th to introduce his music to the younger set. Mr. Meriwether is one of those triple-threat musicians who can play Jaz.z or Classieal and has been the recipient of a National Endowment for the NY 12308 B. Conn, Editor Arts Composers Fellowship. Herstyle has been haled as "pas-sionate and exciting."

She has balanced anactive performance career withthe life of an academic.

Fred Hersch. Mr Herschrecently appeared in TownHall with a fchamber orchestraperforming some of his originalworks. He has a well-earnedreputation as one ofthe bestaccompanist in the business.The New York Times praisedhis "open orcitement" and theJazz Times called a "leadinglight of this generations pian-ists." Some of his original com-positions will be sung andperformed on the program theevening of October 19th.

And speaking of selling out thejoint, APFJazz ftnally dtd tt!\[re sold out the house on ourSheila Jordan-Harvie Swartz-Gene Bertoncini Concert. Wealso had an opening for ourfirst art exhibit The Art ofJtzz.

With the passing of SarahVaughn, the Praticos and theCivales reminded us of aconcert she did in Schenec-tady in 1947 at the old PlazaTheatre in Schenectady.
