    TRANSITIONDo w h a t t h o u u n i t s h a l l b e t h e w ho l e o f

    t h e L aw .

MZ LA < M EZ LA > is a word whichderives from the Hebrew meaning theinfluence from Kether, or the influence whichthe divine supernal godhead has upon ourdaily lives. M EZ LA has been with us inone form or another sinc e before the firstintelligent lizard stuck a stick into the mudSt pulled him/her-selfuponto his/her hindlegs, thus bequeathing to us bipedalmonkeys a perspective unknown toquadrapeds. M EZLA is the emanation fromthe inner spark of limitless light whichbalances and reciprocates the aspirationfrom our outer form of animate matter. When combined, this emanation andaspiration formulate the reciprocatingdriving force of evolution biological, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, andmagickal.

Every endeavor and every institutionembody this force to some degree, for it isthe very pulsebeat oflife. Yet certainindividuals and certain institutions seem toembody it more than others. Why? In myexperience, initiation into pre-existingcurrent which honors/nutures thisreciproca ting flow facilitates/ac celerates myability to tune-into my personal creativityand to do m agick < wh ich may be defined asthe ability to cause change in accord withwill>. For some, initiation may com e fromviewing a rock video, locking eyes with astranger for but a moment, or reading abook or magazine . For others, formal initiationinto a magickal Order such as the A/.A.", orthe O T O may be more suitable.

MEZ LA is also the rather pretentiousname ofamagazine wh ich began back in1973 as a single page mimeographednewsletter put out by Soror Tan ith-7 98 and Frater Iadnamad-111< David Smith > of the Typhonian O T O . In1974,1 joined the staff to overseetypesetting and printing, and to instill theother staff members with the grandiose ideaof evolving M EZLA into a hard-boundseries of volumes < m uc h like Crowley'sEquinox>which libraries and privatecollectors w ould cheris h for posterity. I alsobegan funding MEZ LA so that it need notrely upon sales for its continuance.

Ov er the first volume < 8 years, 13issues> M EZL A grew to 10 pages with asmall worldwide circulation in America,Canada, England, Australia, Italy,Switzerland, Poland and a few otherWarsaw-pact countries. Through ourprinting of obscure O T O material, webegan to be footnoted in books by Gran t,the Caliphite OTO, and in various Crowleybibliographies. But within MEZL A fomented the inspirationalleavening of MZLA . A t one time or another, conflictsarose between each of MEZLA's staffmembers and Kenn eth Gra nt whenthat member's MZLA was in apparentcontradiction with Gran t's MZLA . [I sayapparentbecause wha t Gra nt saw ascontradiction, I saw as an augmentationbrought about from our individual personalperspectives.] O n e by one th e staff tired ofconflict with Grant, left MEZLA, andresigned from the Typhonian OTO untilyours truly was left as t he one staff member-3 -

amass the necessary capital to put out anissue.

I do not see how MEZLA can cater tothe com mercial needs of the m arketplaceand still remain true to MZLA . I do not seehow conce rns over profit/loss or deadlinesfurther the great work. Bu t then again, Ihave never been a practical businessman inany ofmyendeavors. So far, my free-formanarchistic econ om ic perspective hasworked for me. Bu t it does necessitate somestrange quirks which editors/publishers ofother magickal journals do not seem tounderstand.

W he n we are ready to go to press,MEZLA will accept a limited amount ofadvertising. Bu t we do no t expect ads tosignificantly underwrite the high cost ofproducing a hefty journ al w hich is printedand bound to last a century or more. Iexpect MEZLA to cost somewhere between$30-50 per issue placing it far beyondthe budget of those students and neophytesof the Great W ork who have not yetprogressed sufficiently to tap them into theflow of universal prosperity which pervadesthe m anifest universe. $1 3 per issue would make MEZLA accessibleto all who have a serious interest in it. Th ismeans we need patrons sponsors whohave progressed far enough in their ownGre at W ork th at they are able to supportthose who hold high the lamp of gnosissothat MZLA may become more manifest inthe world.

Ove r the past 15 years, MEZ LA andMath of the ChRySTA L H UM Mpowerzone has been supported thru theefforts of its hard-working staff, by thosewho have attended our workshops &transformative weekends, and by Soror

Dear Editor,Well, I got your first Mezla and the coverletter explaining the change to Mezlim andI just decided t o write and tell you that itlooks good to me. It seems bothinformative and interesting and it's nice toknow that a magazine like this now exists. Our Community is (among other things)really all over the place and we deserve acha nce to share our different practices andopinion s. It's also helpful to find one placeto read all different kinds of material whenusually you ha ve to buy a lot o f separatemagazines to get the same thing. (A nd youdon't even cost a lot ) Ca ll it whatever youwan t to, but keep it up. I, for one, intend tostick around for the duration.

    Sincerely,Frater Ipsos

    To the Editor(s) of Mezla/Mezlim:

efforts? I'm entirely at a loss as to whetherto treat your journal as a sober attempt toprovide an open forum to the broadspectrum of the existing M agickalCommunity; or whether to take the entirething as a satirical attempt to poke fun atthose Practitioners who fail to take theirCra ft with the proverbial grain of salt. Ineither case, it was a most entertaining read.Keep up the good (if slightly confusing)workTalyra Anderson

Dear Kenn,It's been quite some time since I've seenanything of any quality come out of theStates. No t meaning to be chauvinistic, butthat's how it is, you know? What with allthe airy fairy pagans over there, I guess it'srough going to put out anything with moreofa punch to it than the Beltane Hymn. That said, I was quite pleased to see yourlatest project, M EZLA . It seems to havequite a promising future ahead of it. Itwould be too much to ask -1 suppose - toinclude some of the more current M agickalwork, ala Kaos Magick. Th ere 's some rathergood work on the ma rket here in Brit. Butthere's nothing like inbreeding to kill thejoy of it all. (Just look what it's done for theRoyal Family.)

How can I take your publication "Sirius-ly" when you include such items as RizAleister Crowley? Am I to infer that youdon't believe in the "Sirius-ness" of your

Go od luck and all that. Send m e thenex t one when you get around to it.(Name withheldby request)

THE FUTUREOF MAGICKby Donald Michael Kraig

In w estern societies there are currentlytwo major trends in the study andperforman ce of magick. T h e first of theseis W itchcra ft . Although m odernWitchcraft traces its origins to pre-Judeo/Christian origins, for the most partit owes its existence to such people asGerald Gardner, Alex Sanders, LadySheba and Ray Buckland, whopopularized Wi cc a in the sixties andseventies. A big chan ge in the nature ofwha t might b e more appropriately calledneo-Paganism came with the publicationof two books,D r a w i n g D o w n t h e M o o nan dThe Sp i r a l D ance. Tens of thousandsof people became interested in Wicca as aresult of these books, but few could findinitiation into a Co ve n. T h e result wasthe founding of new groups by those whohad read the works of the earlier-namedpeople.

For many years there was a joke goingaround the occult comm unity that"Witches don't study and magicians don'tdo m agick." In m any cases, it wasand is--sadly true. Bu t some of the people wh owere starting their own covens were doingtheir own research into ancient traditions. The result has been a rebirth of interest inNorse, Greco-Roman, Celt ic, NativeAmerican and other forms of Paganism. In some instances the creation of neo-Pagan covens based on these traditionshave been highly influenced by thewritings of the W itch cra ft populizers.

The point here is that even thoughmany neo-Pagans are deeply involved instudy of ancient tradition, their magicalsystems are based on the pastnot thefuture. Th is is no t mea nt as an insult, nor

is there any thing w rong with th is. It issimply a statem ent of fact.Ceremonial magick systems have had adifferent situa tion -a situation tha t haslead to stultification. Th is is because thesad fact is that most self-proclaimed

magicians do no t do magick. Th ey simplyread about itendlessly-in books both oldand new. Ma ny of them ca n quote whatdifferent authors said on a subject. Som econsider the Lesser Banishing Ritual ofthe Pentagram to be the greatest and mostimportant ritual ever devised, and theymay do it some day when they finally getenough information. I know one"magician" who wrote a ten-page essay onwhy a Hebrew name of God, "Adonai,"should be spelled in English in a particularmanner. Who, other than him andnumerous occult readers/non-practitioners, cares?

But because the majority of "magicians"have been readers and not doers, thewritten words of magick have bec ome ofvital importance. An d because of this, the Golden Dawn has become the mostimportant occult group in history.

The Hermetic Order of the GoldenDawn came into being when little wasbeing published on the subjec t of m agick. It just so happens tha t man y of the peoplewho were members of the G.D. couldwrite and were published. T h e result isthat virtually every important book onmagick written in the past century waseither written by a member of the GoldenDawn or by someon e who was eitherdirectly or indirectly influenced by thatOrder.

The most important book on theGolden Dawn, of course, is the one byRegardie. Alm ost every occu ltist has oneor more editions of the book, either thehard or softbound versions from LlewellynPublications, or the huge hardbound

rewrite firom Falc on. W h e n Regardie wasdoing the version for Falcon I wrote tohim, begging him to put things in alogical order rather than having subjectscovered in a rather random and haphazardmanner. He ignored my suggestion. An dwhile m ost occultists do have a version ofhis book, few really study it.

Perhaps the one thing that people don'tunderstand about the Golden Dawn isthat it was anexperimental order. Peoplelearned the system in order to have a solidbackground for performing experime ntalmagical rituals. Mathers, the head of theG.D., was responsible for introducing intoEnglish several magical systems andgrimoires. Golden Dawners thenexperimented with the new (in English)rituals and me thods. In his huge book,Regardie gives a few rituals that heinvented, based on the formula of theNeophyte initiation ritual.

But somehow, probably because most"magicians" are really scholars and notpractitioners, th e words of the Go ldenDawners became etched in stone, "T heGreater Key of Solomon has good spiritsand the Lesser Key of Solomon [actuallyone part of the Lesser Key called theGoetia] had evil spirits." Really? Is thatbecause somebody said so or because youinvestigated the matter? "A ll of theGo lden Dawn Rituals are in Regard ie'sbook ." Really? He only gives a couple ofmagical rituals based on th e N eophyteritual. W he re are the magical ritualsbased on the other, higjker level initiationrituals? "Crowley was a black m agician."Really? Regardie told me that members ofthe Golden Dawn began to call Crowley ablack magician because he was sexuallyliberated.

W here is the new experimentation?Where is the new research? The sad factis that m any people who publicly claim to

be following the Golden Dawn traditionhave calcified, doing what experimentalmagicians were doing 1 00 years ago. T ha twould be like a physicist ignoring all ofthe discoveries that have occurred in thelast century.Do not feel bad for the public GoldenDawners, however. So m e are sellinginitiations (a time-honored tradition thatgoes back to Mathers' wife, Crowley, various fringe Masonic Orders, andcontinues today with Anton LeVey), and,I am told, are doing quite well in theGolden-Dawn-initiations-for-a-profit-business.Perhaps the most experimental of theoriginal Gold en Dawn m agicians wasAleister Crowley. Even though The B ook

o f he L aw said to get rid of the old,"black" rituals, he continued doing them, modifying them and adding to them withhis personal vision. He added the nameof his Holy Guardian Angel to the LesserBanishing Ritual of the Pentagram, andnumerous others today follow this pattern, never thinking that perhaps they shoulddiscover their own HGA and add that tothe LBRP.

    The sad fact is that many who try toemulate Crowley have left out the mostimportant parts: originality andexperimentation.T H E W I N D S O F C H A N G E

There always have been avant gardemagiciansthose who experiment, trynew things and develop new systems. Th eunknown magicians who devised theSolomonic system of magic exemplified byth e Keys of Solomon were such. So wereDee and Kelley, Mathers, Yeats, Crowleyand Regardie. Bu t these and othe rs wereindividuals, and in many cases their-9-

writingsvisual records of their originalityand exper imentat ion-have been lockedin ston e by people today. Th ei r wordshave become laws instead of directionalbeaco ns. But over the last two decadestwo revolutions have taken place that arelikely to take magick to new and higherlevels.

The first revolution was the publicationof the works by Ken neth G ran t. In thosebooks he basically described where magickhad been and where he thought it wasgoing. Alon g the way he made somerather wild claims. For examp le, heclaimed that to Crowley, eleventh degreeOTO-style magick was not necessarilyhom osexual. Kn ow -it-all tha t I was backthen , I knew that this was wrong. Th en Iresearched further and discovered thatGra nt was correct . O n the other hand,Grant made some conjectures based onword etymology that I still don't accept.

As his series of books was published, new and greater discoveries awaited whatwas then an indifferent public. (T he factis, his books were never fast sellers, andmore people have heard about Grant thanhave actually read all of his books.) Healso wrote of oth er people experimen tingwith magick in new directions, includingNema, Michael Bertiaux, Spare andother s. Num erous individuals and groupsare experimenting with new systemstoday. O n e woman is sharing hermagnificent drawings based on herexperimentation vaulting the Tunnels ofSet, while Spare's magick, among othersystems, gets used in Thee Temple ovPsychic Youth.

The other revolution you hold in yourhands. Printing and publication hav e, asa result of improved technology, gone sofar down in price that it is open toany one . It used to be tha t photoc opieswere poor quality, expensive, and didn't

last. Now they are inexpensive and canlook better than originals. To dotypesetting that looked good requiredmachinery costing hundreds of thousandsof dollars. Today it ca n b e done for a fewthousand, and some copy shops will evenrent you time on their typesettingcomputers so that you don 't hav e to payfor the hardware.

Another facet of computers that makethem part of the new magical revolutionis "bulletin boards" (B B S ). Informationon magick can quickly and inexpensivelybe exchanged by people using computerBB S. In short, the second revolution tha tis important to the advancement inmagick is the advancement in easycom mu nications. Journals such as this(Mezlim) are being sent all over theworld.

I feel that magick is truly entering anew phase, one that uses the past as abasis for the future. A couple of months back, I took part inmy first journey through the Underworld ofmy fears. My comp anion s and I passedthrough the seven gates, leaving ourconscious Selves and our clothes behind. My twin sister took part in this muddy littleadventure. I left our con nectio n a t one ofth e gates along w ith my wardrobe. I was nolonger acting the part of her caretaker, as Ialways had before . I was a primal exp lorer, without the excess baggage of reason ormorality. In the Gre at Round, beneath meand within me, I found parts of mySelf Iseldom see or share. I found myselfencircled by a hissing serpent, and becam eit. I transformed m yself time and again in tothe creatures I found there in the center ofmy abyss. My belly bumed with hunger. Ibeca m e my own worst fear, ready to snarland slither and k ill.

I was unafra id. I heard my sisterwhimpering somewhere in the dark, like afrightened child, and I didn't care. I wasexperiencing m y own power. Th is was nother show. It was all m ine to explore. Later, she told me that she was afraid ofme. Iknew she was frightened, and was glad forher fear. I felt Ereshkigal in my shadowssmiling. Sh e knew tha t my sister and I hadseen a hidden part of me - now revealed. There are so many more layers to digthrough, to expose to myself and others. Iknow so little ofmydark side. Th ere in theUnderw orld, I spat, hissed, drooled and

hungered for raw flesh. It was a blastLike so many people I know, I am bothattracted and repelled by this dark side o fmy nature. I feel the Dark Moth er visit mein my nightmares and in my lovely dark

depressions. Sh e comes to me when I growtired of breathing, and knocks at my door, reminding me. I tremble with intrepiddelight. As a child I was informed that expressingmy anger was "bad". My loving m otherwould order me to stay in my room till Istopped foaming at the mo uth. Sh e wouldyell at the top of her lungs at me, and I

would have to stand there and "take it". Icouldn't say, "Dam n you, Bitc h Stophurting me " I couldn 't say that w ithoutgetting my face slapped. I know it's notunusual in this mildly repressive society. Inthis land of amusing parents, children aretold to behave like perfect angels (or not atall). I am sorry, but I am n ot on e of thosedamn cherubs.Several months ago, one of my friendsgot caught in the abyss. Sh e asked me ifone could get stuck there in the Blacknessforever. Ca n a person becom e trapped intheir own darkness, unable to return? I saythat Death is a part of the process of rebirth, and we must be patient w ith time and withourselves. Th is is the process of life, whichwe will go through again and again. T h eDarkness is a primal source o f creativity and

healing, and this process of descent, deathand rebirth will continue for as long as ourblood flows.Under my Will, I will also let my feelingsflow. Inve ctive and laughter are both formsof inner expression, and I do this for Me.Blessed Be.

WHAT DOESALISTERCROWLEYHAVE TO DOWITH THELEMAANYWAY?Samual Webster

It's strange being a magickian among thewitches. Stranger still being a Thelemitemagickian, a member of the O T O and otherOrders and always getting blamed for Un cleAl's misbehavior. Really W h at doesAleister Crowley have to do with Thelemaanyway?

He's only its fou nder ...

In 1904, in a small hotel room in Cairothe en d of the world occurred. T heApocalypse happened and only a m iddleaged cynical rationalist Buddhist was thereto see it. He did not want to be there butafter his pregnant wife started telling him"The y're waiting for you," he took someinterest. He asked "Who are They, Whatare They like, What are their Attributes?"An d she, ne ither in itiate nor studied, rattled off the secret and unpublishedtraditional Golden Dawn correspondencesfor Horns: His color, planet, station in thetemple, her husband's relationship with thegod and many other attributes. Th eBuddhist, formerly an adept of the GoldenDawn, calculated the odds of correctlyguessing the right combination and it wasastronomical. Horus was calling.H e was still skeptical. "S how me hisimage," he demanded of his wife, and offthey went to the Cairo Museum. Hesecretly smirked as she walked right past

image after image of Horus until shestopped and pointed, "That one " It was theFunerary Stele of the Priest Ankh-af-na-Khonsu. In the M useum catalogue it wasnumbered Stele # 66 6. Crowley, whosemother used to always call him "You Beast "was dumbfounded. He had the curatorsmake a copy and a translation and wentback to the hotel.

Rose, his wife, told him to do aninvocation to Horus, but the way shewanted him to do it broke all the rules. Hewas to invoke the archetype and force tha tis Horus among the Egyptians from amongfour other cultures all at the same timeAlthough common in modem practice, inhis day this was unheard of. He went andinvoked the P atron of all Magicks, T ho th,who told him to obey his wife.

On March 2 0 ,1 90 4 , Crowley was told bythe image of Horus he invoked to en ter theemptied room of their hotel suite on April8, 9, and 10 at the stroke of noon with onlypaper and pen and wearing a simple w hiterobe. He sat down at the desk facing the wallof the room with paper and pen in h and. Asthe twelfth bell was tolled, a Voice behindthe scribe began to speak, "Had, themanifestation of Nuit..." This was Aiwaz, the m inister of Hoor-Paar-Khraat; the babein the lotus, the god of innocen ce andsilence. He had come to ann ounce the endof the reign o f Osirus, the Slain G od, andthe enthroning of Ra-Hoor-Khuit, the

Risen Lord. Very much like the angel of theApocalypse of Joh n, who came bearing alittle book to be kept sealed until the endtimes, Aiwaz came bearing words ofanewtestament o f the relationship o f Humanitywith the Divine.T h e ce ntral image of this relationship isRa-Hoor-Khuit, which means in Egyptianthe Illuminated Solar H ero. Horus is the

and is born again forgetting a ll of his godlywisdom but with all of its unguided power.Through His struggles against Set (readMatter) and with the help of his teachersIsis and Thot h, he remembers Wh o H e Is.He awakens from His dreamlike ignoranceand chooses to war no more against HisTwin as He now remem bers Set to be. Nolonger needing to fight with Materiality, educated in Art by Isis, and Sci en ce byTh oth , H e is suitable now to rule.

Without an adversarial attitude towardthe world, what of the Buddhist doctrine"All is Sorrow?" Chucked. W ha t o f theChristian attitude of suffering? Notnecessary. "Remem ber all ye that existenceis pure joy, that all the sorrows are but asshadows, they pass & are done; but th ere isthat which remains. (AL II, 9)" WhatAiwaz was saying Crowley would no t accep tbut he was forced to write on, "I see theehate the hand and the pen but for me inthee which thou knewest n ot .. ." For threedays from N oon until the stroke of One ,Crowley wrote the two hundred and twentyverses of the Book of the Law.

For nine years the manuscript gathereddust in the attic of Crowley's ScottishHighland home. Until one day, whilelooking for skis for a guest he found themanuscript. He had avoided magick and allthings related since the time in Ca iro. N oyoga, no meditation, just being a husband. Ithink his marriage ended at this point or hechose to go on an excursion to the Saharafor some particular reason. During hissojourn in the desert he was inspired toperform the Enochian Calls of the 30/Ethers. During this visionary experience hebecame convinced of the profoundimportance of the Book of the Law anddetermine d to promulgate its way.

In essence, Th elem a is a call to radicalindividual Liberty and Resp onsibility. It issummed up in the axiom "Do what thou

wilt shall be the w hole of the law." Thelem ais Greek for will in its creative, magickal orprimogenital sense. Thus for an incarnatebeing, one's will is the intent for which oneincarnated. The working hypothesis is thatif all things did their Will, did what they are"supposed" to do, there would be noAcciden ts. Th e model to describe this is theorderly Solar System, each planet followingits own orbit. However, stars, some timeswhole galaxies, collide. "As brothers fightye," we are counseled. Ther e will beconflicts ofwill, perhaps from a greaterperspective the conflict itself is the centralact and not the apparent ends, and so withthe awareness that we are essentially allfamily let us enter into our conflicts withjustice, fairness and honor in our hearts.

This brings us to the phrase, "Love is thelaw, love under will." Th is is the principlewhich is expressed in physics as gravity. Inthe Egyptian and Hermetic philosophiesthere is no separation between the forces ofnature and the a ctions of the Hum anity andthe Divine. The apparent differences are aquestion of scale. Love is seen at the naturalattraction of all things for each other asgravity binds all matter together over vastdistances. Th e place of will is then a matterof determining the right relationship tohave w ith other bodies. We are at thecorrect distance from the Sun for our kindof life to flourish on Earth. Not much closeror farther would kill us. Thu s is Earth in astate of love under will towards the Sun,prolonging its rightful existence. We chooseto be near our friends and lovers, we chooseto be far from p laces of pestilence and decay. The law is love, we must have relation, butwe get to choose how to relate, placing ourlove under will.

Throughout the Book of the Law thereare little messages to Crowley telling him hewill never fully understand that which hehas written. An ego blow for sure, but whenwe look at the declaration made in the third

verse, "Every man and every woman is astar," and look at Crowley's life it is obviousthat he never out grew the Victorianmisogyny he was raised with. Although heintellectually com prehended th e equality ofthe sexes he never lived it. Unfortunately, some who follow this path follow inAleister's footsteps, others are simplyblamed for it...

I was raised by stern Irish-Polish Catholicparents. It was wrong to say "no" to them;obedience was a virtue. I was expected tofollow out t he program set down for me bymy parents in education, then grow up andget a "respectable" job . However, the worldmy parents grew up in is not the one I'mliving in and they simply don't have theexperience necessary to advise me. Wi th theway I was raised I was very uncertain ofmyself. I did not know what I really wantedto be when I grew up. To Know Your Will isto know W h o You Are and W ha t YouWant. This is the essence of the practice ofThelema.

Using classical and self-created ritualsand meditations I seek and attain toknowledge o fmyWi ll daily, ever knowingthat my Will is not a dead static thing but aliving process. Perhaps in an ultimate senseone's will is always perfect, yet from ourlimited perspective we don 't always see how.Man y 'accidents' beco me windfalls, ifviewed in this light. Th is is the cen tralteaching of Thelema, that everything isalready perfect, ifweshould just awakenfrom our ignorant slumber and see. When Crowley returned from his trip inthe desert, several books of verses camespontaneously to his mind and pen and, having written them, he was as yetuncertain of the author. They came to beknown as the Holy Books of Thelema, recently published by Samual Weiser &. Co.These cover in greater detail theCosmogony of Th elem a as a represention of

the Egyptian Gnosis and as an extension ofHermetic Philosophy. These texts show theGre at Wo rk as the working towards theending of Sorrow, Sickne ss and D eath:Hedo nic Imm ortalism; learning throughpleasure, through love, creativity andcooperation. No longer is it necessary tohave a ruler high upon his or her throne totell us all what to do. "T her e is no lawbeyond Do what thou wilt." Each ofusis asovereign with the right and the power tocreate the world we wish to live in, and alsothe responsibility.

Responsibility is the key to practisingTh elem a. By being willing and able torespond to the needs of the times, we ashumans fulfill our role in the world as thecausers of change and growth. No animalon this planet has the tool making andusing skills tha t we hav e to transform ourenvironment into a living Heaven or Hell.

Archimedes said, "Giv e m e a lever longenough and a place to stand and I shallmove th e w orld." If working the path ofcausing responsible cha nge is your heart'sdesire, then Thelema might give you theLever Long Enough and a Place to Stand.

Oh, yes, what's Crowley got to do withThelema any way?

    Well, he wrote it down...

Ifmyapproach does not sit well withyou, inv ent an alternative mythologywhich fits-in with your personal experienceof AU-that'is. [Som etimes, crystals appearto m e to be repositories of energy fluxes, rather than beings with whom Icom mu nicate. Crystals don't seem to carehow I view them, or whether or not I thinkthey are in telligent.]

Th is essay is a series of m editationexercises, instructions for dream w orkings, and other practical ritual techniques. These exercises are not designed to befollowed to the letter. Th ey arejumping-offplaces for creating/discovering how you ca nbest work with crystals. I have found thefollowing general guidelines to be useful inall ofmywork. If they work for you, feelfree to use them . If they do no t work foryou, write your own.1. Ritua l has a life all its own. Do no tattempt to constrain a living ritual into apre-set mold. Allow/encourage it togrow/evolve.2 . Read over the rituals as I have w rittenthem . Familiarize yourself with what youwill be doing & what equipment/suppliesyou will need.3 . Ma ke whatever chan ge(s) youthink/feel are appropriate. Be pra ctical.Do n't m ake the ritual so complex that youget lost in it. Us e whatever materials are athand. Ifyourequire yourself to acqu ire lots

of tools/toys you can't afford, you probablywill never get around to doing the ritual.4 . G o over the ritual in your mind untilyou feel comfortable that you understandwhat you are doing.5. Assemble whatever equipment/ingredients you need. Ifyoudo forget2some crucial ingredient, it is inadvisable tobreak your meditative flow during yourritual to fetch something you forgot.Ca nc el your plans or improvise3.6 . Put this book S i all of your notes awaybefore starting your ritual. Do no t disruptthe flow ofyourritual to con sult yournotes. Ifyoucannot remember what to donext, sit down with your crystal(s) &meditate on what it is you are working toaccomplish. When inspiration comes uponyou, flow from your meditation back intoyour ritual, without fussing over wh etheryou are following your original ritualoutline or not.7. Do whatever com es naturally. Yourcrystals themselves are your best guide.Use this book for as long as it is useful toyou, then pass it on to someone else.

A Creation MythFirst, a bit of mythology. From myperspective, planet earth is a collective

consciousness, named Q a i a , who is thevector sum of all individual consciousnesseswithin it4.From what I am able to comprehend of

[2.] Forgetfulness is often a symptom of some internal turmoil. If you find yourself canc eling-o ut on ritualsa lot because you have forgotten something, I suggest you exa mine your motives to see why you aresabotaging yourself.[3.] Improvisation can be fun if you are adventurous. On ce I forgot the wine wh ich was to be used as asacrament in a ritual, so I dug into the earth until I struck water Si used it instead of wine.

the nature of the Universe, individuatedconscious life seems to be an inexorablephase in the evo lution o f the consciousnessof existence, w hich some callGod orGoddess. Biolo gica l life (such as ushum ans) is a latecomer to the ecology ofQaia. Sim ple min eral crystals arerepresentatives ofaform of the continuityof the consciousness of existence which wasan cien t when the first biological organismbecame manifest

Life when viewed from our provincialbiological perspective, seems to beconcerned primarily with assembling moreof itselfthrugrowth & reproduction. Lifemay be thought ofas that which has theW ill to impress its food with its own self-sustaining self-replicating pattern oforganization. For biological life, the ma inveh icle for growth is the internal ch em icaltemplate (RNA/DN A of genetic code &.the chemical factories in our cells).Mineral crystals are quite similar tobiological life, only their chemical factoriesare external, rather than internal. Th egrow by accre tion & reproduce by buddingSi/or with seed crystals, using their ownouter surfaces as templates.

Th ere is an old Arabian saying whichstates that God must have been the firstblacksmith, for it is not possible for anymortal to forge a pair of tongs unless s/healready has a pair of tongs. T h eRNA /DN A template is analogous to ablacksm ith's tongs. If it does no t alreadyexist, life ca nn ot be forged afresh. PositingGo d (or Goddess) as a motivating forcemay indicate the W hy of biological

creation, but not theHow. A s a magickian. god-iri 't raini ng, I am ever-striving tounderstand the origin of God's tongs, theprimal biological template.Quartz crystals seem to suggest part of ananswer. Before biological life manifested

upon this planet, the oceans were warm, rich in minerals and filled with simpleorganic molecules, the basic buildingblocks oflife. Th is nutritious soupengendered thru simple ch em ical reactions, with sunlight & lightning ac ting ascatalysts. The microcrystalline structure ofQuartz clay (abundan t along the shores ofthe primal sea) provided the necessarymatrix within which Life began. Th echemical template structure of quartz is byno m eans as comp licated or assophisticated as even the simplest of today'sgenes, but it seems to have been sufficientto inspire the onset of biologica l life particularly ifGaia had memories of otherexperiments with biological life, or asample of that which it was seeking tobring into manifestation.

Viruses, as well as bac terial, m old &higher fungal spores, are able to journeythru the vast cold emptiness of interstellerspace. Th is mode of transportation is notas certain or as direct a m eans o finformation exchange as spaceships, but itis far more accessible to tho se organismswhich lack the manipulative ability tobuild larger ships with stardrivesnavigational equipment.Inference & experimental data gainedthru past life regressions, dream memories, and consciousness exploration within my

[4-1 For me,Gaia is most definitely an IT , rather than (the more commonly presumed) She, for the greaterbulk of life on this planet (whether measured in number of individuals, number of species, or raw tonnage)does no t fit our rather p rovincial sexuals tereotype of Mot/ier-Earth.By the word IT , I do not connote that Gaia is eithe r neuter or non -sexua l. Qab alists may recognizeIT asth eHermit Si Lust cards of the Tarot conjoined, by which I seek to express that Planet Earth is perpetuallysexual Si in constant orgasm. To say that in another way, Gaia is conscious of the continu ity of existen ce,

rather than being divided for love's sake, for the chance of union.-19-

genetic code all seem to indicate that Gaiafirst manifested biological life thru the useof silica quartz clay as its primal temp lateusing ideas &/or samples o f co-evo lutionarybiological life which cam e here from other(mu ch older) star systems. Som e humansseem to be living hybrids of Terrene lifewith alien spores &/or viruses from otherplanets. Th is mythology helps to explainthe intuitive link which we humans havewith quartz crystals with the earth as ourparent. It also helps to explain th efascination which many ofusfeel for far-away places am ongst the stars.

Crystal SelectionTo m e, every crystal is alive. Eachcrystal has its own unique personalityW ill, and its own unique purpose. For me,working w ith crystals is mu ch likeexploring a sexual relationship5.My primary experience is with clearquartz crystals. Colo red crystals each h avetheir own mythologies & their own very

specialized uses. For use with thisguide, Irecomm end good clear A rkansas quartz, especially if you are a beginner. Th eirchara cter is strong & vibrant. Ifyoufindthat Arkansas quartz is tooedgyfor you, tryworking w ith Brazilian or Madagascarquartz, which are reputed to have a moremellow & rounded character. For mostgeneral work, stay away from doublyterminated crystals (those with points on

each end) at least until you feel youknow what you are doing. Th is caveatapplies especially to Herkim er diamonds, aparticularly vibran t doubly term inatedquartz found only in Herkimer, New York.I suggest picking a crystal w hich fitscomfortably in your hand. 2- 4 inch crystalsare good depending on your hand size &personal preference. Stay away from smalljewelry crystals for the practices in thisguide. You need one w hich is massiveenough for you to feel even when youare sleeping.

CleansingCrystals are recording devices w hich areperpetuallyon . They pick-up & storeinformation & psychic impressionsconstantly. Th eir capacity to store &retrieve information appears to be infinite.I have reason to believe that although eachcrystal is a unique entity, ea ch is also anintegral part of the consciousness of Gaia, and, as such, acts as a local access term inal

to the planetary equivalent of the AkashicLibrary. I have found that a crystal'smemory may be divided in to 2 portions that which is temporary (erasable) & thatwhich is a permanent part of theconsciousness ofGaia. A crystal'spersonality, Will, and Path cannot bealtered thru cleansing, w hich erases itstemporary storage, but it can by fixing, which makes temporary storage permanent.

[5.] I found th at when I first became sexually active, it was very useful for me to comm it myself to anintense m onogamou s relationship until I had some idea what sex Si relationships were all about. W he n Ibegan w orking with crystals, I was given my first crystal by my lover. I worked with th at crystal exclu sivelyfor about 5 m onths before my prime dream crystal Si I found each othe r. I worked with tha t crystal everynight for about 4 years, at which point I gave it to a new magickal friend to forge a dream link betw een us.As I gained skill , knowledge, Si confidence, 1 expanded my horizon s. Now, I work with dozens of crystals some of which have been with me for years, and some of which come Si go thru my life so quickly that Ibarely get to know them . On the other hand, I have found tha t each person I know tends to have a uniquerelatio nship with th e crystals in his/her life. I hav e known p eople who bough t their first crystal thru a mailorder catalog (which strikes me as being about as bizarre as marrying a total stranger ) Si/or who beganrelationships with dozens of crystals within the first few months of working with them .

Crystals are most readily cleansed bysoaking them in a salt water solution, which is approximately as concentrated assea water. Use your taste &. intuitionrather than exact measure to determine theappropriate strength ofyourcleansing b ath.I soak each crystal individually for at least24 hrs (3 days if I have never cleansed tha tparticular crystal before). I discard thesolution after one use. IfIhave severalcrystals to cleans e, I use separate cups orjars to soak eac h crystal. I prefer to useglass or plastic con taine rs. I do no t likeearthenware because it picks-up & storesth e vibrations I am trying to get rid of. Ialmost never use metal6, because metalimpresses its vibrational character upon thecrystal being cleansed. Glass is a chem icalcousin ofquartz, but its crystalline structureis mu ch m ore fluid. Glass is de-energizedcompletely by washing in salt water, so it

makes a good clean sing vessel. Plastic(especially Teflon, TFE, & Polycarbonate)are insulators & neutral storage containersfor subtle psychic energies. Th ey are idealfor cleansin g crystals & are also ideal forlong-term storage of crystal essences, whichI will talk about later. Many authors ofNew-Age crystal booksseem to feel that a crystal must be cleansedbefore it can be used. I have h eard all sortsof dire warnings about negative psychicenergy which might possibly emanate fromuncleansed crystals. Th ey m ake it sound asthough a crystal which comes to you from aclose friend or a trusted merchant should betreated as if it were a letter-bomb or anA ID S suspect. I have heardunsubstantiated tales of psychic vampires, insanity, virulent disease, & suicide beingattributed to using crystals witho utcleansing them first7. Hogwash Su ch talk

[6.] For advance d work, cleansing a crystal in a metal container, or with metal Si/or me tallic salts in the saltwater can be used to imbue a crystal with the essential characte r of that metal. For details, see the sectionon miscellaneous techniques in part II - next issue.17.] Sure, it ispossible to acquire a crystal which was once used by a powerful magickian (perhaps even ablack magickian, ifyou believe in-Si-fear black magick - To paraphrase Isaac Bonewits Black Magick isthat magick which is practiced by those people I do not like Si/or who use methods of which I do notapprove (i.e., understand)), especially ifyoushop for crystals in antiqu e stores or frequent auctions &. garagesales. To m e, such crystals have character & experience, rather than psychic conta min ation. If you domanage to locate a truly powerful crystal relic of some Archmage or psychotic, itscharacter is proba bly sofixed that the only people skilled enough to cleanse such an ally, would probably find the idea oferasing itabhorrent. Ifyoucom e across any crystals which you feel to be trulycursed, please send them my way. Manyso-called cursed objects (A rather infamous crystal skull I have heard about, but have no t yet met, ispurported to be able to transfer itscurse to any gemstone stored in the same safe with it. Althou gh the skullis far out of my price range (even if it were to be offered for public sale, which is no t likely), I would dearlylove to loc ate its whereabou ts. In my dreams, I know this crystal skull, and would love to get to know it inperson. I would like to create an arrangem ent w ith the skull's present custodians so I could have the skullcharge some crystals for me to distribute amongst those who are interested/capable in communing with itsenergy.) are, from my perspective, more than likely to be powerful magickal entities who are seekingsymbiotic relationships with those human magickians who are able to appreciate their energy, and not feartheir intensity. Suc h crystalline beings probably have bette r things to do than instruct no vices or be treatedasObjects-of'Art. O n th e other hand, I have m et several crystals which seemed to have no interest in arelationship w ith anyone. Th ey acted like library books or travelling teachers, who seemed imbued with ageas (A geas is kind of difficult to describe. Its meaning varies somewha t according to the co nte xt in w hichit is used. A geas upon a person m ight be a task which they feel compelled to fulfill. A person acting underageas might be thought ofasacting obsessed. However, in the co nt ex t I am usinggeas, the crystal is notobsessed. The crystal, itself, creates thegeas &. is the focus of its actio n. A geas'ed crystal places a willedstress upon the probability matrix of the multiverse to induce (but not compel) all animate beings/forces tocoo pe rate in transp orting die crystal (an inan ima te bein g) to wh ere s/he/it wills to go. is only middle-class germ pho bia translatedto psychic realms.Magick is the Art & Science of causingchange in conformity with W ill. Crystalsmagnify internal thoughts/feelings &reflect them back to those w ho work with

the m . As such, crystals wh ich are worked-with over long stretches oftime become excellent allies in the on-going work of editing subliminal feedbackloops. On the other hand, those whoproject their negative program loopsoutward as fear and paranoia may find thatcrystals are difficult (or impossible) to workwith until/unless they are willing to dealwith (what I term) theirvictimconsciousness.

I suggest that ifyoupick-up a crystal forthe first time & you don't feel comfortablewith its energy,Don't Use It even if itwas given to you by a powerful m agickianor a close friend. Return it from when ce itcame (explaining your discomfort, butwithout apologizing for your feelings). Or,ac t as the crystal's steward/matchmaker8until you pass it on to someone whom youfeel may be a more suitable match for theenergy of that particular crystal.

Sometimes I do recommend regular &thorough cleansings for crystals, but suchinstances are rare. Here are a fewexamples:Professional Healers (as distinct from

those who are just learning how to usecrystals) may wish to minimize energycarry-over between clients by rinsing theirhealing crystals in salt water, each timethey are used.Tho se w ho teach crystal classes may

want to cleanse their loaner's after everyclass so each student can tap-into theessence o fhis/her crystal unencumbered, rather than h aving it mixed with th emental/emotional states of all the otherstudents who h ave ev er used th at crystal.Crystals which are used in hospitals &.hospices to assist the dying (see advancedtechniques, Pt II - next issue) are usuallykept in a very strong salt water bath whichis chan ged daily. Crysta ls usedinstitutionally are frequently cleansed inbulk, rather than one crystal per container.1 feel that this is a commonsense procedure,so long as care is taken th at each batch ofcrystals is allowed to clean se for at least 3hours after th e lastcrystal was added to thebatch.Washing (sometimes called cleaning) is

very different from clea nsing. I have foundthat many crystals love to be rinsed in cooltap water; some even like being buried insnowbanks. Washing removes surfacegrime, enliven s a crystal's psychic fieldenables clean contact between your hand& the crystal's physical being. Som ecrystals prefer to be bathed in light, ratherthan water. Many like to sunbathe

crystals get the reputation of being cursed when so-called sentient beings lock them away, thus preventingother animate beings from assisting them in their travels frustration simply induces the crystal to tum-upthe intensity of theirgeas (Modern Western civilization (I lump most communist countries in Westerncivilization) seem to me to be very audacious (or stupid) in their bureaucratic property-Si-border fixatedblind encum beren ce of pilgrims, madmen, shama ns.) to keep them moving. My best guess is that they dothis so as to keep their knowledge/experience in circ ulatio n.[8-1 I always help each cry stal to get to the person who is atuned w ith its vibr ation . I don 't try to wash-awaythat w hich makes me feel uncom fortable. I have developed relationships with every crystal wh ich has comemy way without clean sing any of them. I like to know w here each crystal has been, share in its life'sexp erien ce, Si leam from its adventures. [This seems to be analogous to my enthusiasm in getting to know anew lover's past adventures, rather than wishing she were a virgin.]

Herkimer diamonds seem to be the major sha tter10 .exception to this rule9. I do advise cau tion, This is the endofpart I. Pan IIofA Sexhow ever, in exposing crystals to Magic Joan'sAl chemi cal Qui de toQuartrtemp erature extremes, as they may crack or Chryswlswill appear m the next issue ofMEZLIM.[9.] I have been told (but hav e not verified) that the qualityw hich makes Herkimer diamonds so special3isobliterate d entirely if the crystal is ever exposed to direct sunlight. O nc e a Herk imer has been exposed tosunlight, they seem to en joy being in the light, where they behav e like very clea r brilliant specimens ofdouble-terminated quartz^.: Supposedly0, Herkimers which have never been exposed to direct sunlight make excellent allies forthose experienced magickians who specialize in astral projection, communing with advanced races of beingsfrom other Star Systems, and forging symbiotic relationships with sentient lifeforms from other dimensions.I am told that die only way to obta in such a specimen is to mine it yourself. T h e n (to m aximize its effects& protect it from inadvertent exposure to sunlight), it should be sealed within a hollowed-out polished disk(engraved S i painted with appropriate sigils) made from a slice of meteorite, and worn on a band aroundthe hea d. Th is device professes to cha nne l m ost of die gross energy of the Herkim er diamond w ithin themeteorite, while encouraging its subtle energies to interact with its wearer thru his/her ajna (third eye)chak ra. Herkimer/Magickian/Meteorite act synergistically. Linesof force connect the newly-formed gestaltconsciousness (H/M/M) thru extra-terrestrial channels within the meteorite, while the diamond quests forcom mu nion with othe r Stars. T h e m agickian provides the Will/focus to speed the search for appropriatecontacts .: I have never met a Herkimer which had been kept away from sunlight. I am reporting untestedinformation w hich came to me by way of an A tlantean power crystal I met at a rock-Si-gem show. Much ofthe inform ation was later corroborated by a crystal healer I once met who has mem ories of being a Mage inAtlantis.: Dou ble-term inated quartz crystals are usually excelle nt teachers for those who wish to learn astralprojection Si crystal skrying, but they tend to be over-protective of those who are adventurous in theirwanderings. I have found that Atlan tean power crystals^ are the exce ption to this rule. Suc h crystals oftenlead novices on wild adventures thru Space/Time. : W hen I speak of an Atlantean Crystal, I do not m ean to imply tha t a particular crystal was physicallypresen t at Atlantis . It may have been , but I have no way to verify such a claim . To me, an AtlanteanCrystal is one w hich somehow taps me into an Atlan tean mythology and invokes (or perhaps evokes)knowledge & Jor images relating to tec hno logical use of crystals usually forcomm unication/transp ortation. Of ten this information is presented allegorically or mytho logically withimplication s of a me ta-techn ology involving physical time travel and D-hop ping (as an outgrowth of themerger of physical science, spirituality, and transcendental A lch em y). I hav e found that such crystals havephysical similarities to one ano ther. In my expe rience, Atlantean Crystals all have a very distinctive (if heldin the proper light) angular Si highly reflective m etallic inclusion. Mo st have one inclu sion. Som e haveseveral. The inclusions are most often triangular, and are generally translucent, rather than opaque ortransparent.[10 .] Som etime s a crystal will ask you to expose it to extremes of temperature to bud-offasmall fragment. Iusually give such seed crystals to friends or bury them at global ch akra-p oints.
