www.LDAF.la.gov VOL. 98, No. 5 March 5, 2015 It’s that time of the year when ripe, delicious Louisiana strawber- ries are back in season! “Come March, we want everyone talking about Louisiana strawberries,” said strawberry farmer Anthony Liuzza. Liuzza’s family started raising the berries in the early 1900s. “That’s what they knew how to do when my family came from Sicily,” said Liuzza. Now, the fourth generation strawberry farmer operates Liuzza Produce Farm in Independence, La. He’s one of the largest strawberry pro- ducers in the state with 80 acres of strawberries. At one point, the Liuzza’s had up to 120 acres. “When acreage shrinks, what does that tell you? It’s because expens- es are too great.” Liuzza says the industry is shrinking in Louisiana because it’s getting increasingly difficult to compete with Florida. “Florida doesn’t have as many frosts or freezes as we do. In fact, they haven’t had any issues this year.” Liuzza says he never stops put- ting money back into the crop because he’s always protecting it from the weather. “As a result, the consumer pays a little more for Louisiana berries.” This month, the Louisiana Strawberry Board is starting a campaign to promote the berry. There will be signage in grocery stores across the state urging peo- ple to “Pick Louisiana Strawberries” as they do their gro- cery shopping. The campaign will also include billboards, television and radio commercials. “I think the cam- paign is a good idea. If you want Louisiana farmers to stay in this industry, we need your support. We can’t give away our strawber- ries.” Liuzza says he understands everyone wants the berries for a low price and the stores are com- petitive, but weather challenges have resulted in his family busi- ness expanding into other produce such as bell peppers, cucumbers, eggplant, squash and tomatoes. He says he can’t raise one item any- more. He must expand his com- modities to stay in business. “We’ve had good and bad sea- sons. Right now, I’m just hoping we stop having freezing tempera- tures in March.” Liuzza said two hard freezes set back the industry for Valentine’s Day but says he’ll have plenty of strawberries for consumers in March. “Buying local supports the local economy and farmers, the produce tastes better and is generally safer,” said Strawberry Board Director Rebecca Riecke who is heading up the campaign. Liuzza said while he’s getting a break on fuel these days, every- thing else needed to plant produce is going up in price. “Food safety and staying in compliance is our number one priority. No one is more concerned about the quality of a product than a farmer because that farmer is eating what he grows and giving it to his family.” Liuzza adds, without the con- sumer’s support, the Louisiana farmer won’t stay in business. Strawberry season is during the months of March, April and May. It’s that time of the year whenripe, delicious Louisiana strawber-ries are back in season! “ComeMarch, we want everyone talking

about Louisiana strawberries,”said strawberry farmer AnthonyLiuzza.

Liuzza’s family started raising

the berries in the early 1900s.“That’s what they knew how to dowhen my family came fromSicily,” said Liuzza. Hesays he can’t raise one item any-more. He must expand his com-modities to stay in business.

“We’ve had good and bad sea-sons. Right now, I’m just hopingwe stop having freezing tempera-

Liuzza adds, without the con-sumer’s support, the Louisianafarmer won’t stay in business.

Oct.-Dec. 2014 Total Volume and Total Value Ratios Paid to LouisianaTimber Producers By Area & Species (with comparisons)

*Insufficient number of quotes to report (less than three quotes received).Note: The Doyle Log Scale is the basis for board foot measurement.

This report is intended to serve only as a guide for timberstumpage prices and to monitor market trends. It should not be used to determine the fair market value ofa specific timber sale. The prices paid for a specific standof timber will vary considerable due to factors such assize, species, quality, quantity, logging conditions, dis-tance to the mill, end product, demand and competition.Timber markets often change rapidly and therefore pricesin this report are not necessarily a reflection of currentmarket prices. It is strongly recommended to obtainassistance from professional foresters and use the compet-itive bidding process as the ultimate determinant of fairmarket value for any specific tract of timber.

Stumpage prices paid for pine sawtim-ber during the fourth quarter of 2014averaged $262.72 per thousand boardfeet Doyle. This average represents a

11.4 percent increase from the previousquarter and 5.73 percent increase com-pared to a year ago. Prices paid formixed hardwood sawtimber during the

The emerald ash borer, a severe insect pest of ash trees, hasbeen confirmed in Webster Parish making Louisiana the 25thstate to confirm the presence of this beetle.

Emerald ash borer (EAB) is a federally-regulated plant pestthat almost exclusively attacks ash trees. It was first reported inthe U.S. in Michigan in 2002. The beetle, which is native toAsia, most likely entered the country in dunnage or woodenpallets. Since that time, it has spread down the East Coast asfar south as North Carolina and Georgia, and west to Colorado. Most recently, it was found in southern Arkansas in July 2014.

A U.S. Forest Service and Forest Health Protection employ-ee found evidence of EAB damage in ash trees during a visualsurvey. Further investigation revealed larvae (immature bee-tles) beneath the bark of multiple trees in approximately a twoacre area. Feeding damage creates characteristic S-shaped tun-nels, or galleries, in the sapwood causing initial branchdieback. After several years, the infested trees die. Larvaewere collected and sent to the USDA Systematic EntomologyLaboratory in Maryland where they were confirmed as EAB.

“Louisiana’s ash trees are primarily located along theAtchafalaya Basin and the Mississippi River Delta. However, ash trees are also planted in many urban areas for its aestheticappeal,” said Louisiana Department of Agriculture andForestry (LDAF) Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M. “As

mentioned last year when EAB was discovered in our neigh-boring state of Arkansas, it could be costly for residents or cityofficials to have them removed once they start dying.”

The LDAF began drafting an EAB response plan in the fallof 2014 in preparation for the anticipated arrival of EAB inLouisiana. The plan included a survey, outreach and regulato-ry oversight components and involved multiple federal andstate agencies including USDA U.S. Forest Service (USFS),

USDA-APHIS Plant Protection and Quarantine (USDA-PPQ),and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).Industry associations with interests in forested lands and urbanplantings of ash trees also participate as well as the LSUAgCenter. “The LSU AgCenter will continue to support theseoutreach education efforts to forest landowners and the gener-al public on EAB issues through our regional foresters andparish agriculture and natural resource agents,” said LSU VicePresident of Agriculture Bill Richardson.

The LDAF and USDA-PPQ have surveyed for EAB adultbeetles annually for the past seven years using sticky traps bait-ed with lure scents which are attractive to the beetles. A trapsurvey will resume again in the spring when adults becomeactive. Survey results will help determine the extent of thebeetle presence in the state and the potential regulatory actionsnecessary to reduce the spread of the pest. Regulated productswould include ash nursery stock, ash logs, lumber and palletsand all hardwood firewood.

Last October, the LDAF started a “Don’t Move Firewood”campaign which is geared toward educating people about therisks of transporting pests to other locations where some cando harm. It is best to purchase firewood not more than 10 milesfrom where it will be burned. When traveling, burn firewoodwhere you purchased it and make sure to burn all of it.
