PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP

OPENING HYMN “Lord, Open Thou My Heart to Hear” {tlh 5}

INVOCATION

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.Congregation: Amen.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

P: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy.C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. You are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will.C: Amen.

THE SERVICE OF THE WORDC: Lord, have mercy on us, Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us.

ORDER OF WORSHIP

GLORY TO GOD, WE GIVE YOU THANKS

1. Glory to God, we give You thanks and praise; Of heav’nly joy and peace on earth we sing. We worship You, to You our hearts we raise, Lord God, almighty Father, heav’nly King.

2. Lord Jesus Christ, the Father’s only Son, You bore for us the load of this world’s sin. O Lamb of God, Your glorious vict’ry won, Receive our prayer, grant us Your peace within.

3. Alone, O Christ, You only are the Lord, At God’s right hand in majesty most high: Who, with the Spirit worshiped and adored, With all the heav’nly host we glorify.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: Let us pray . . . C: Amen.

FIRST LESSON ii timothy 4:1-5I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

ILS CHOIR (SUN) “O Jesus, My Savior”O Jesus, my Savior, my Lord and my King,I’ll tell of Your tender love, Your praises I’ll sing.In sorrow, my Comfort; in darkness, my Light;my Sunshine by day, and my Song in the night.

O Jesus, my Savior, with You I am blest,my Life and Salvation, my Joy and my Rest.

Your name be my theme, and Your love be my song;Your grace shall inspire both my heart and my tongue.

In mansions of glory and endless delight,I’ll ever adore You in heaven so bright,and singing Your praises, before You I’ll bow:if ever I loved You, my Jesus, ‘tis now.

SECOND LESSON luke 8:4-15And when a great multitude had gathered, and they had come to Him from every city, He spoke by a parable: 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6 “Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture. 7 “And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. 8 “But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold.” When He had said these things He cried, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” 9 Then His disciples asked Him, saying, “What does this parable mean?” 10 And He said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that 'Seeing they may not see, And hearing they may not understand.'” 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 “Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 “But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. 14 “Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. 15 “But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.P: Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it.C: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! These words are written that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

APOSTOLIC CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

CHILDREN'S SERMON

HYMN OF THE DAY “Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness” {tlh 371:1-5}

SERMON TEXT isaiah 55:10-13 Seminarian Sam Naumann“For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread to the eater, 11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. 12 “For you shall go out with joy, And be led out with peace; The mountains and the hills Shall break forth into singing before you, And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. 13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress tree, And instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree; And it shall be to the LORD for a name, For an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”
