1. Hepburn Regional Park :- Mount FranklinType State Park, Camp Ground  Situated 11k north of Daylesford via the Midland Hwy [A300], just north of the 55km post turn right (east) up thesignposted, sealed, narrow, winding Mt Franklin Rd for 1.5k.

Privacy Good: well off main roads near theend of the tourist access road. Expect

Site descriptionAn unusual site, being located inside a volcanic crater. The pine tree covered crater rim provides good windprotection . A range of mainly exotic trees provide ample shade and, together with short green grass, a park-like atmosphere. Bird life is limited. The circuit road provides good access to all potential sites (5 benches andBBQs), although many are sloping. A very pleasant, cool camp.Warnings Tap water signposted "not suitable for drinking"

2. Wombat State Forest - Werribee CampType State Forest, Picnic Ground  Situated by the upper Werribee River, south of Daylesford, north of Ballan.Access from the Western Freeway [M8] at Ballan: North 10k on the Ballan-Daylesford Rd [C141], just afterentering the State Forest right (east) 1.2k down the Bunding-Blakeville Rd (signed) to the river.

Privacy Reasonable; well off main road but open to little used forestry road

Site description

An attractive, small, level site in a well forested gully by the upper Werribee River. Well shaded by Messmateand Peppermint, surrounded by forested rolling hills with little undergrowth. 2 BBQs and benches. Aconvenient late night stop when escaping Melbourne.

Site descriptionA pleasant green camp surrounded by forest.A very pleasant and grassed picnic ground (shelter, 3 BBQs and benches) with a roadside parking area is

located by the Lerderderg River. Opposite is a gravelled creek flat (seasonally closed) bush camping area.Level, well shaded by Mountain Ash, Peppermint and Blackwoods.

Site description

A very small, pleasant, green, creek side bush camp beside the small Lerderderg River. Well shaded byMountain Ash, Messmate, Peppermint and Blackwood. Some ferns. Surrounded by forested hills. An old picnicground (no facilities)There are larger informal sites about 1k upstream but they are distantly overlooked by the Lerderderg Rd andaccess may be slippery if wet

Site descriptionSituated in the Lerderderg Gorge. Small gravelled river flats either side of the road bridge. The narrow sitesextend about 100m downstream, between the river and steep hill side. Can be crowded at peak times. Some

benches and BBQs broken. Well shaded by Blue Gums and Manna Gums with Peppermint, Red Stringybark,Red Box and Red Ironbark up the steep rocky surrounding hill sides. Koalas live in the Manna Gums.Kangaroos, wallabies, cockatoos, honeyeaters and rosellas are common. Can be hot in summer.

Site descriptionA reasonably large rest stop located along a level section of the old highway. Six benches in a grassed, shadedpark. No fireplaces. Some shade provided by mature Messmates. TV security surveillance and street lights.Much more pleasant than the rest area opposite. A convenient stop if escaping Melbourne late at night.

6. Gisborne South - South-bound

Type Road Rest Area, Roadside  Situated by the Calder Freeway [M79], 47k north-west of Melbourne, 3k south-east of the southern Gisborne flyover. (Duplicated on both sides of the Fwy). Well signposted.

Privacy Poor: Squeezed between freeway and local service road with minimal vegetation screening.Site description Slip road rest stop with sealed parking areas squeezed between freeway and local serviceroad with minimal vegetation and no shade. It will take some years for tree plantings to grow sufficiently toprovide privacy and shade. Street lights. Pleasant view over farmland towards Mt Macedon.

Site descriptionA reasonably pleasant camp located on the northern slopes of the Great Dividing Range.An old house site by a large dam. The fenced day area (6 BBQs, benches and shelter) features a range of exotics an historic arboretum and wallaby mown lawns. The smaller camping area slopes and is adjacent to thehorse yards (flies) but is well shaded by Mountain Ash, Messmate and Peppermint. Site descriptionAn easily accessible, pleasant, reasonably quiet overnight stop.A well developed rest and picnic area, with sealed roads, mown grass and well shaded by mature deciduoustrees. Abuts the Campaspe River and incorporates two mineral springs. Facilities include a children's playground and band rotunda. Street lights. Traffic noise has been reduced with the opening of the Calder Freewaybut is still noticeable.
