After the Game Bring Your Team to

Are you building a team or a program?

I recently had the pleasure/means to watch a former player play a few games with her college program in Vegas. The games were fun to watch; the weather was awesome; and well, Vegas was Vegas.

It was interesting to see the amount of college players that came back out to watch their alma mater play. They were laughing, telling stories, and having a good ole time. That got me to thinking, if we are spending time building teams or programs? Is one better than the other?

So what is the difference you ask? Building a team will have a unique experience to this group of athletes. Building a program will get your athletes to care, year after year, about your team.

Building a team is a wonderful thing. Getting athletes to care about the greater group is a fantastic task and will lead to success for your current team. This group of individuals will

have a bond that will last a lifetime. Team bonding nights such as going to a movie or out together as a group will build the team unity and togetherness. But is that enough?

Building a program will have former players coming back to cheer on the team for years. Some may stop in and help with practice. Players will care about the youth in the program and want them to carry on the continued success that each team has had. Hosting youth camps gives players a buy-in to the next generation’s success. If you have an opportunity for older players in the program to be able to help coach summer teams it will be a great mentoring role too. Inviting youth teams to be recognized at your varsity games will help develop your older players as role models and build that program culture you are looking for.

In the end, I am sure you will find a way to concentrate on the present team while helping the past be recognized as still part of your program, which will help you with your future generations of athletes.

4 MINNESOTA PREP COACH

Being a lifetime member of the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association as well as growing up as the son of a coach has taught Tom the importance of how much positive impact a coach can have in the lives of their student athletes. Additionally, Tom knows that this is a difficult time for many coaches: he believes in supporting his peers and being there for them as well as mentoring the young coaches just entering into this great profession. Tom believes that the positives outweigh the negatives and regardless of what activity we lead we all need to stick together and focus on the student athletes in order for them to have the same experiences we were blessed with growing up.

Tom firmly believes in the importance of organized sports and activities for Minnesota’s youth, due to the collaborative, leadership, and organizational skills student-athletes learn along the way in their athletic and academic journeys. Tom also believes in multi-sport athletes and has always worked with his peers to encourage kids not to specialize.

Coaches are a vital presence in our schools, and Tom would be grateful for the opportunity to further promote high school sports in Minnesota while facilitating strong coaching partnerships for all activities in an effort to provide a unified coaching voice for Minnesota’s schools.

Vice President Bio - Nathan Youngs: Dassel-CokatoMy name is Nathan Youngs

and I am running for MSHSCA Vice President. I am running because I am a believer in servant leadership and I have the greatest respect for high school coaches. I have taught and coached in the Dassel-Cokato School district for the past seventeen years. I teach science and I coach three varsity seasons. In the fall, I am the head girl’s swimming &

diving coach. In the winter, I am a varsity assistant in the boy’s swimming & diving season, and in the spring, I am the head boy’s and girl’s track & field coach.

I was not always a teacher and coach as I worked in the private sector for many years. I spent fifteen years as a manager and trainer for Perkins Restaurants. I also spent over 10 years working in a microbiology lab for Cargill, and finally 17 years at DC with the jobs overlapping throughout my professional career.

When I was asked to consider running for the MSHSCA vice-president position, I knew instantly that I wanted to serve Minnesota’s high school coaches. I have served two years as a vice-president and I am currently serving my second and final year as the president of the Girl’s Swimming & Diving Coaches Association. In addition, I have served as a Section Representative and on the True Team Committee for the Swimming & Diving Coaches Associations. Those years of service have taught me the importance of the MSHSCA, and the importance of service to coaches. I feel this way because of the impact my coaches played in my personal development

and my character. Without the people who coached me, I would not be the person I am today.

I grew up in Monticello playing any and all sports that were offered. I kept my parents extra busy because I would often be involved in two or three sports at the same time. I wanted to do it all, and my parents made it possible. In high school, I narrowed it down to one sport per season. In the fall I played football, in the winter I swam and in the spring, I was on the track & field team. Being a three-sport athlete was more than fun; it was the way of life in Monticello.

I was fortunate to be able to participate in sports in college. I swam at St. Cloud State University and I also planned to participate in track & field at St. Cloud State University. However, my collegiate athletic career ended after my freshman year because of back surgery. My career as an athlete came to an end; however, my passion for athletics has continued, so I did the next best thing, I became a coach.

I have been blessed to coach in a supportive community and to work with athletes who work hard to improve. I credit my athletes and the community support for the success the teams have enjoyed. My girl’s swimming & diving teams have participated in the True Team State Meet the past seven years. Over the thirty-eight seasons, at least one of the athletes I have coached qualified for the state tournament. I have been awarded section coach of the year awards, and I have also been awarded the state assistant coach of the year award. However, the award I value the most is the Dedicated Service Award I received from the Swimming & Diving Coaches Association.

I have also had the pleasure to give back to my own community by coaching in the youth soccer and baseball programs. I feel that the experience of coaching both high school and elementary athletes gives me a unique perspective of the challenges coaches face today. I would be honored to serve as the vice president of the MSHSCA.

The track and field season is upon us! I want to extend my best wishes to all coaches and schools for the upcoming season.

A big thank you to all coaches who attended the Track and Field clinic in January. It was very well attended, and as usual we had a great selection of speakers. I know that I am not alone in saying that I learn a lot from the high school coaches that present at our clinic. I encourage you to accept when asked to present at the clinic. Also, if you know of a high school coach who would be a good speaker, please let us know. A special thanks to Craig Nelson, Dave Wieber and Johnny Josephson for organizing and running the clinic. They do a tremendous job coordinating and getting quality speakers.

Congratulations to all of the Coach of the Year recipients. Assistant Coach of the year: Class A, Karla Jenson – Pierz, and class AA, Ty Granning – Alexandria. The head Coach of the Year recipients were as follows: A boys, Eric Klein – St. Charles, AA boys, Scott Christensen – Stillwater, A girl, Pete Janiszeski – Luverne, AA girls, Sarah Hatleli – Rosemount. Also, congratulations to the Volunteer of the Year. Class A, Doug Carlson – Bagley/Fosston, Class AA, Diane Hessini – Mounds View. Also, congratulations to Jim Beecroft, the Presidents’ Award recipient.

I would like to encourage everyone who has not yet joined the Minnesota Track and Field Coaches Association to please do so. The benefits for you and your team are many.

This season we will be awarding our first Mr./Ms. Track and Field. As the season progresses, look for how to nominate an athlete, and the criteria needed for the award on our track and field website.

The track and field season is upon us, and it will be over in what seems like a blink of an eye. Make sure you enjoy all of the little things that make this sport special. We are the mentors of a great sport, inspiring greatness in both small and giant steps. Some of our best athletes never make the podium. Their victory is in the work ethic, commitment and growth that they achieve. By: Gary Wade, Rushford-Peterson HS

Spring is here, which means warmer weather! Yay! I want to thank our section reps for serving the Girls Gymnastics Association this year. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication.

Congratulations to Detroit Lakes, Class A State Team Champions, and Stillwater, Class AA State Team Champions. Congrats to the Individual State Champions and participants. It was a great state meet. A wonderful evening was had at this year’s state banquet celebrating the many successes from this season, along with acknowledging our State Head Coach of the Year, Jodi Mottinger, Class A and Toni Klebe,r Class AA, and Assistant Coaches of the Year, Rick Wolfe, Class A, and Brady LaVoi, Class AA.

A few reminders as we move into Spring. All members of the B squad, JV and Varsity coaching staffs must sign a summer waiver to work with their athletes during the summer. This includes volunteer coaches. Waiver forms can be found on the MSHSL site under Coaches Clipboard, and are filed with your school district. We will begin planning for our Fall Clinic soon. If you have any ideas, please feel free to share with your section rep or myself. Have a great Spring and Summer!

6 MINNESOTA PREP COACH

The View from SchuBy: John Schumacher, MSHSCA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Sitting down to write my article for this issue of the Prep Coach I do so with great concern of what will high school athletics look like in the future. For the past two months my phone has been ringing with stories of coaches that are being non-renewed or are

suspended from coaching due to agendas of individuals in power at the school they represent. It’s seems to be an epidemic right now…and that is very concerning. In 2002 the MSHSCA worked very hard to address the issue of non-renewal. With the help of Representative Urdahl, legislation was passed and signed into law by the Governor. A couple years later language was added to the law which included “the existence of parent complaints must not be the sole reason for a board to non-renew a coaching contract.” Even with this statue we continue to see coaches being non-renewed and not given the due process they deserve. We, as an association, are continuing to work on giving this statue more strength. I have received many examples of what individuals are doing to show support of coaches in their region. One example; a large contingency of Section 8A Activities Directors supported a letter to an editor that was written by one of their fellow AD’s in hopes that other Section AD’s would have the article printed in their local papers also. There is a group of individuals who are working on a program they have labeled “We Back Our Coaches” and are looking at gaining support from the MSHSCA to help with the development of guidelines to protect the rights of coaches in Minnesota. I am sure coaches rights will be a topic at all AD meetings across the state this spring. We all need to ban together and work collectively to protect and support coaches if we want to

see education based high school athletics remain viable and strong in Minnesota for many years to come.

As I was looking at the calendar today I began to realize we are smack in the middle of March Madness when it comes to MSHSL tournaments. We have already crowned 15 state champions with more to come in the next couple weeks. I was also reminded today that the end of the winter season may come sooner than some of our student athletes want, but then there is a group of athletes waiting with great anticipation for the spring season to kick off. Today a spring athlete asked me when I was going start blowing the snow off the track so it will be ready for practice. I only hope that Mother Nature takes care of the snow she dropped on us the last week of February so we can begin our spring sports on time. Congratulations to all the winter sports State Champion coaches. I say thank you for all you do for your schools, communities and programs but most importantly the athletes. Many years after graduation as athletes sit around at their high school reunions, it is their coaches and teammates that they will talk about for hours, reliving some of the best memories of their lives. Be that coach that athletes come back to years later and say thank you for making a difference in their life. To the spring coaches that will be fully engaged in their programs soon, I wish you the best of luck this upcoming season.

Since taking over the position of Executive Directors Bernie and I have had the privilege of attending a number of clinics and are very impressed with the dedication and commitment of the sport association leaders. We both look forward to attending as many clinics as possible throughout the coming year and getting to know each of your organizations and members on a more personal level. We’ll see many of you at the President’s/Delegates Meeting March 23rd at Mancini’s. Enjoy the remaining winter State Tournaments that are left and think spring!

HAVE YOUR NEW CARD FOR ALL SPRING SPORTING EVENTSYour 2017-2018 Membership & Insurance

Expires July 31st.

The card is white with Gold Ink for the year 2017-2018.

The possession of the MSHSCA membership card is a privilege extended to paid up members of the MSHSCA . The use of the MSHSCA card to gain admission to regular season high school events and some college events is controlled by the school at which the card is used to gain admission . There is a variety of policies that schools follow in regards to allowing admission with the card . The MSHSCA is not empowered to dictate to the schools what the school policy should be in terms of accepting the MSHSCA card or the number that will be admitted with each card . A letter is sent to the Activity Directors of all schools in July and all schools are asked to inform us if their school would not accept the card . It has also been brought to our attention over the past that some private venues do not accept the card for admission and this is especially true for hockey schools using private venues for their contests . Park Center does NOT accept Membership Cards for admission.

Register.cordonco.com is what you will see on your credit card statement for your MSHSCA membership. Please do not challenge this before calling 218-234-0345!

It has been a difficult few months for coaches across the state of Minnesota in many sports. As bad as it seems at times, there are places in Minnesota that do respect and stand by their coaches and appreciate them. So how do we as a coaches association spread this type of atmosphere to all schools in Minnesota?

Some of this starts with schools, and not just coaches talking more about academic based sports and their benefit and why they are different than non-academic based sports. If we are having sports solely to garner athletic scholarships,or win state titles, we are in trouble already, as 99% of athletes and teams will never achieve either. So why bother going out for a sport then? There must be more behind sports to draw students into them and for them to work so hard.

Earning a scholarship or a state title means little, if an athlete has few good memories as an athlete. As a coach and athlete, I remember far more practice and out of practice situations than I do game situations. Most all of those memories are good, and is why we all got into coaching. We want to pass on those moments to our athletes and give them those same feelings. Many times I felt closer to my teammates and athletes when we lost than when we won. Yes, losing is a part of life.

This is an uphill fight that needs to be taken up by schools, coaches, athletes, communities, school boards and administration if we intend to turn this movement around. The MSHSL “Why We Play” is a good start, also the movie “When the Game Stands Tall” is another great example of academic based education on display.

We have gotten away from talking about academic based sports and advertising them as a place to learn, belong, make lifelong friends and most importantly a great place to learn to grow up and how to live your life. We tend to advertise sports as join us to be a winner, and we are all guilty of it. When the wins don’t come it is natural for athletes and parents to ask why?

We need to educate our communities that the questions that should be asked of a coach are “can they help my child grow up into a better person?” “can they teach my child how to live their life?” not how many wins do you have. I am not naïve as I do understand that if a coach doesn’t win at least some of the time they will not be around. But it needs to stop being the only reason why they stay or are dismissed.

CORNERKICKS

By: Ron KruschwitzNorth St. Paul Boys (retired)Soccer Communications Officer

It seems like every time I sit down to write this column, there is changing of our weather or a state tournament is being played. Spring is a very exciting season and we all look forward to getting back outside. If you and your school will be enjoying participating in state competition, congratulations and best of luck to you.

Since the last article, the MSHSSCA has welcomed Keith Randa (Apple Valley Girls) as its new Executive Secretary. He replaces the longtime Executive Secretary, Dave Halgren. We look forward to Keith’s tenure and wish him much success in his new venture. Jason Arnebeck(Park of Cottage Grove Boys) is our new president.

The MSHSSCA proposal for a 3 class state tournament is on hold as the MSHSL is looking at reclassification for all sports, and is planning on having that completed by December of 2018. This would mean that by the time re-sectioning is completed for the spring of 2019, we should know where the proposal is at for a change in the classes for soccer. Stay tuned for further information as this decision unfolds. The MSHSSCA is continuing to move forward with getting ready for the 2018 season. To accomplish this task we are finding coordinators for positions in organization and looking at future plans for high school soccer as we move into the next few years.

Art Seplak (Bloomington Kennedy retired) and his committee have announced the 2018 Mike Warter Scholarship winners. These two $1000 scholarships are given by our organization in honor of Mike Warter who was the Eagan Girls Coach. Any soccer player in Minnesota has the right to apply for this award. The winners are determined to be the best all-around student athlete based on their application.

The girls’ Warter Award winner is Charlotte DeVaughn from Minneapolis Washburn High School. Charlotte was a four year defender on a defense that recorded shutouts in 55 of 77 games over the four years. She is a 3 time All-State Award winner and was a Ms. Soccer finalist. She was a peer tutor, peer mentor and student council member at Washburn, and active as a volunteer in her church. Academically, she ranks in the top 10 in her graduating class. Charlotte will attend Brown University.

The boy’s Warter Award winner is Noah Senn from St. Croix Preparatory Academy. Noah was an All-State winner in 2017 and he was selected Mr. Soccer in Class A this past season. He was also one of the players of the game in the 2017 Senior Classic game. He is a National Honor Society member at St. Croix Prep and active in his church and community. He is in the top group academically in his graduating class. Noah will attend Liberty University this fall.

Congratulations to these two fine student athletes that represent their school in soccer and academics. They also are

just two of the many fine high school students in Minnesota that play soccer.

The annual Coaches Fall Clinic will be held on August 10. More information will be in the May issue of the Prep Coach. United Soccer Coaches keynote speaker is on Thursday evening August 9th. The MNUFC training session will be held on Wednesday.

The MNUFC open house was held on Saturday February 17th at their office. Greg Juba reported that it was well done and many of our coaches were in attendance. Kyndra de St. Aubin was the guest speaker. Kyndra joined the MNUFC broadcast team ahead of the 2017 season. She is a former University of Minnesota soccer star and lettered twice as a Golden Gopher. She was a 4 year varsity player at Stillwater Area High School and was the MSHSSCA Ms. Soccer in her senior year. Thanks to Greg Juba (Park Girls retired) for this update.

It is also that time of the year when players and coaches from Minnesota receive national awards. These are given by the United Soccer Coaches Association. The girl’s awards are as follows:

A very impressive list of honors to our players and coaches of the MSHSSCA. We continue to work to get additional players on the list as the number of our coaches that belong at the National level increase.

A very quick reminder that you need to continue to pay your dues through the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association website. The fee is only for the MSHSCA and does not include the clinic or membership in the national organization (United Soccer Coaches). Check the

Coach’s website for further information. Please continue monitor our website at MSHSSCA.org for

up to date information about the plans for the year, dates, updates on important issues and other items that you need information about soccer coaching.

Dates are set for the 2018 State tournament. Quarterfinal games will be played Tuesday Oct 23, Wednesday Oct 24 and Thursday Oct. 25 at sites to be announced. The state tournament semi-finals and finals will be held on Monday Oct. 29, Tuesday Oct. 30 and Thursday November 1.

A point of information about rule changes. Teams now will wear colors at home and white on the road. Check your Coaches Clipboard for additional rule changes for this coming season.

And with that information, this gets us to the end of the column for March. As usual, our March 8 meeting will take place before this issue is published, so please keep in touch by using the website. The next two scheduled meetings are April 25 and September 19. If you need information you can contact Keith Randa (Ex. Secretary) at Apple Valley or President Jason Arnebeck at Park of Cottage Grove. Enjoy the change of season (it is Minnesota) and remember you are blessed with the best job in the world-coaching kids.

As you read this article many amazing accomplishments have already happened in the pool and on the board in the State of Minnesota. Whether it was a JV, Section or State meet it is amazing to think about everything that has happened. With almost certainty I know somewhere during the championship season, pool and school records were broken, a new swimmer finally broke a minute in the 100 yard freestyle, someone achieved a varsity letter time and those are just a few of the many possibilities of the number of goals potentially reached by our athletes this season.

Building up to the state meet this year was the 14th annual Coaches Association True Team Section and State meets. These meets are designed to allow every entrant to score and therefore, the outcome has more to do with the depth of a team, as opposed to just the top few swimmers of a team. The class A champion was Breck/Blake, with St. Thomas Academy coming in 2nd, followed by Northfield, just 16 points behind in 3rd. In Class AA, Minnetonka dominated the field, with Stillwater coming in second, and Wayzata close behind in 3rd. Congratulations to all the participants in the true team meets and thank you for participating.

The State Swimming and Diving meet has already taken place by the time you are reading this article. The meet was March 2nd and 3rd held at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. No doubt there was some amazing swims and dives that took place. Find all the results on the MSHSL website.

Moving into Spring there are a couple more events to keep on your calendars. Our annual All-State banquet will be held

on Friday, May 4th, at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest (same location as 2017). It’s a great way to honor the top eight finishers from the state meets – girls and boys – as well as honor coaches, officials, and support staff who make swimming and diving in Minnesota as great as it is.

That same weekend the Coaches Association will be hosting the annual Upper Midwest Swimming and Diving Clinic at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest (This is the same location as 2017). This year’s featured speakers, right now, include; Mike Bottom-Michigan, Sam Freas-Oklahoma Baptist, Tim Beers- St. Xavier High School, Charlie King-UW Lacrosse, Jeff Hegle- St. Cloud State. More information regarding both the clinic and banquet will be out soon on the MSHSCA website – link to sport associations and then to swimming and diving and then banquet or clinic.

During the summer months, my two year term as Boys Association President will come to an end. Doug Donaldson from Coon Rapids will be taking over for the next two years. I have enjoyed my time leading our association. I am thankful for the great people I have worked with and the opportunity to have learned so much. I encourage everyone to get involved in their respective sports association. It is a great way to strengthen your sport in the State of Minnesota and build lasting relationships with individuals who care deeply about your sport.

Finally, I just want to thank everyone involved in making swimming and diving such a special sport in the State of Minnesota. From the coach to the official, from the parent volunteer to the Athletic Director. I know many individuals take time out of their busy work schedule and family time to work with these swimmers and divers. Your guidance both in and out of the pool makes a difference in their lives far beyond the time and score. The endurance and resilience they learn from our sport will carry over to the other aspects in their lives and make them better people.

Spring is in the air, and finally, so is the snow!. I am sure it will get recorded as being just a bit below average snowfall for the season, but it never seems like it with all the dry weeks we have during the heart of our season. I really think it is time to look into the process of delaying the start of the season a couple of weeks. If interested, send me an email.

Another exciting season has concluded, with some wonderfully talented individuals and teams rising to the occasion up north at the State Meet. Mara McCollor, a junior from Wayzata, went wire to wire, both for the season and the state meet as the top woman in the state. The top women’s team went to the very deep squad from Stillwater. The top three individuals were McCollor, senior Hannah Bettendorf, of Proctor, and junior Sarah Olson, of Blaine. The top three teams were Stillwater, Forest Lake, and Robbinsdale Armstrong. On the boys side, It was Wayzata who went wire to wire from the beginning of the year to the capstone state meet to finish as State Champions. In the individual competition, Garrett Beckrich of Grand Rapids, who was a bit off the radar of the Metro programs, took charge right off the bat in skate, and held off the competition in the classic pursuit to earn the crown of the top male skier in the state! The top three teams were Wayzata, Stillwater, and Forest Lake. Rounding off the individual podium was Beckrich, and fellow Wayzata senior teammates, Anders Sonnesyn, in 2nd, and Luc Golin, in 3rd.

We have a wonderful spring meeting shaping up this April 21st in Mora. CXC will be putting on a Level 100 Certification course. We will do the Technical portion of the course before lunch, and the Training Theory portion after another outstanding lunch put on by the great folks of Mora. There will be an opportunity for those interested to do the Theory portion at home prior to arriving, and still earn their level 100 certification. We will have a special guest attending the meeting as well, stay tuned to announcement, you won’t want to miss it. Agenda items will be fairly brief, but will include an update on State Meet venues, sprint relay proposal, finish line logistics, changing season dates, and what a meeting be without an update on the use of fluorinated waxes?

I will be passing the torch on to the next president of our association. You will have an opportunity to vote on one of two candidates for this prized position. This will come out mid March along with the voting for our Coaches and volunteer awards.

See You all in April.

Spring is upon us and with it the excitement of warmer weather and Track and Field. For those of us who coach our athletes in the spring, we welcome the chance to work with them again and continue to build relationships. Spring is also a great time to evaluate and reflect on the how and why of what we do. Many of us attended the Track and Field clinic in January, and I know for myself it was a great chance to learn and also reinforce what I do. Use the time in the off-season to learn and improve yourself.

Plans for our annual coach’s clinic are underway with a tentative date of Monday, August 6th at Eastview HS. Check out our website http://www.mshsca.org/crosscountry with updates on speakers and registration details.

Please also use the time in the offseason to consider nominating a deserving coach to our Hall of Fame. See our website for details.

Pass along our association scholarship application to your senior student-athletes. We will award 4 - $500 scholarships, one for each gender for both Class A and AA. Applications are due May 1st! http://www.mshsca.org/crosscountry

If there are things you feel our association should be involved with to help improve our sport, please let me know. [email protected]

With our season complete and another State Tournament in the books, we want to congratulate the following teams for their accomplishments:

CLASS A WINNERS:JAZZ- FrazeeKICK- Frazee

CLASS AA WINNERS:JAZZ- Benilde-St. Margaret’sKICK- Sartell-St. Stephens

CLASS AAA WINNERS:JAZZ- WayzataKICK- Eastview

The tournament welcomed Zimmerman HS in its first appearance to the State Tournament. Prior Lake HS qualified in the kick category for the first time in school history. Frazee was double State Champions in both jazz and kick, another first for that school. 48 different schools participated in the two day tournament at the Target Center, Minneapolis, representing three separate classes and two styles/divisions of dance (jazz and high kick).

And, if there was any question as to the popularity of dance team in the state of Minnesota, let’s look at the numbers. The

DanceteamState Tournament brought 17,565 fans to the Target Center during the weekend of February 16 and 17. 11,736 of those fans were adults and 7,808 bought student tickets. Minnesota State High School League Associate Director, Bob Madison, was very pleased with the amount of online tickets sold this year. Madison says “25% of tickets sold at the event were purchased online. These are record numbers, which is a compliment to the dance community! It also helped greatly with lines getting into the Target Center.”

At the State Tournament, schools whose athletes average a 3.4 or higher are recognized. It is a great way to support our student-athletes who can balance the demands of both school work and their team’s time commitment.

This season also kicked off implementation of a new score sheet, created by a panel of MADT members and JAM officials. The first year of any change always brings with it transition bumps and bruises, but use of the new score sheet will only improve as coaches and judges become more familiar with it over time. The goal of the change was to allow teams to play to their strengths, give opportunities to win through various channels and usage of score sheet categories, and keep in line with dance team’s skill level progression and difficulty.

Our season will officially end with our Coaches Celebration, spring membership meeting, and All-State Show- all taking place the weekend of March 9 and 10. Coaching members of Minnesota Association of Dance Teams nominated up to two dancers in both jazz and kick to be selected for the MADT All-State Team. A panel of member coaches then review videos and select the dancers who will perform with fellow dancers from teams across the state. This show takes place on Saturday, March 10 at Eden Prairie High School and begins at 6:30pm.

Craig Anderson - Boys Sports Representative

As we put closure on the Winter Activity season, I want to congratulate all those participants that gained valuable experiences to represent their schools in their activity of choice. Thanks to the coaches and directors that have guided them to maximize their talents. Whether this takes place on the fields, courts, rinks, or stages, you are helping these students make memories that will last a lifetime.

Congratulations to a pair of greats that have decided to retire after legendary careers, Dave Stead and John Erickson. While both of these men have stepped down as Executive Directors of the Minnesota State High School League and the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association, they have worked tirelessly to assure that their is a smooth transition to the new leadership. It is our duty to serve and work with our new leaders, to continue the excellence that Dave and John established. Best of luck to Erich Martens and John Schumacher, as we all look forward to working with you on behalf of the MSHSL and MSHSCA.

Our state was the first to use technology to verify calls

during the State Football Championships. It went extremely well, as the calls were reviewed, and verified the results on the field, with little if any delay in game action, as has been witnessed in professional and collegiate games. Thanks to the great coverage by KSTC and coordination with the officials, it appeared to be a big success.

We remind all spring coaches to get their Coaches Education Requirements finished before their game schedules begin. The League staff has done an excellent job of communicating with the Activities Directors to let them know who has met the requirements to begin coaching in games or meets. In addition, the baseball season may begin with an optional week of conditioning to prepare for throwing during the season. With the Pitch Count Rules being implemented for the second year, it is a recommended rule change to help prepare the arm and overall conditioning to help prevent injuries. No hitting will be allowed during this optional first week.

Girls Sports Representative, Jill Johnson, and I look forward to meeting with the leadership of the MSHSCA at the Spring Delegate Assembly on March 23, at Mancini’s. Thanks for all you do.

“I’m not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did. ”

- Yogi Berra

As I am typing this article on my computer we are in the middle of our section tournaments. I am guessing when you read this our state tournament will be over. I have to say for a high school wrestler, and coach, this can be the most exciting, but also toughest time of the season. The section and state tournaments never fail to entertain the fans, coaches and wrestlers. The rituals our teams develop are one of the reasons why the postseason is so much fun. It could be the food at the Xcel Energy Center, the camaraderie of the coaches and fans at sections, or the buzz of excitement down in the tunnels at the Xcel Energy Center. Everywhere the teams sit in the stands are long time rituals. One year our team moved into a new section that we have not been in before. We showed up a little early, not knowing exactly what to expect of our new region. We were actually the first team to enter the gym. I told my team to take a seat in the stands while I went and tried to find a check scale. Then one of the teams that had been in that section for years noticed we were in their spot. They claimed that they have been sitting in that spot in the bleachers for over 20 years and the new team took their spot. This was not something they could take lightly. So the next day the opposing coach got their kids up 45 minutes earlier so they made sure they beat us to the gym to get their spot. These types of rituals make our sport great.

As you read this publication our season is soon to begin. March 19, is first official practice day. Hope you’re having a great school year, and are as excited as I am to begin another high school golf season. Winter has been very nice in sunny Arizona. The temps here 10-15 degrees above average most entire winter. During February, we have had a little below average temps, but still enjoyable. How about that weather in Minnesota, pretty cold? Sure hope we have an early start to our golf season? I know everyone would love to be outside early and on golf courses playing early.

Hope you have joined the Minnesota Coaches Association. Always JOIN the association early in the school year. We use registered coach’s emails for correspondence during the entire school year, plus the insurance covers you from July 1 - June 30 yearly. The other benefits can be used the entire school year. So never just join for the golf season, take advantage of being a member the entire school year. If you haven’t joined, please consider it.

State rankings will again be run by Barry Wallin, Rosemount High School for girls. His contact information is [email protected]. Brian Johnson, [email protected], will be the contact for the boys. PLEASE enter weekly scores online for your team and players. This is on the golf coaches website, so all golfers can be recognized, if deserving during our 2018 season. It is an easy online weekly procedure to enter scores for the rankings. If every team enters their players, and team scores, we would have a very accurate weekly ranking. Players who deserve to get the All State award at end of season would do so for each class, boys and girls. Also the Minnesota Golf Association has team and individual rankings, so send in your team and individual scores for their rankings.

Steve Heslop from Pequot Lake,s [email protected], will handle the academic awards. This info will be online on our coaches website, with the due date as May 25. These awards are presented at the banquets on June 11, the night before the 3 state tournaments. If a player is not in attendance, they will be mailed to the coaches. COACHES remember to honor your deserving players by filling out these forms for Steve online and on time. Some parents always ask after banquets why their son or daughter didn’t get an award. Our response is, did your coach send in the info?

State tournament banquets will be chaired by Rich Aulie, Crosby, for class A, [email protected], and Mike Frankenfield, Shattuck, for class AA, [email protected], as wekk as Tim Kallevig, Park Center, for class AAA, [email protected]. When you have a team or player qualify for the State tournament, make sure you attend the

banquet. It is nice for them to be honored at these events. This information is also on our Coaches Association website.

The Birdie Marketing Golf Card is the only golf card the Coaches Association endorses. This golf card gives back to the coaches, and your association. We drew 8 teams who have sold at least 25 cards, and they received a check for $500 for their program. Winners in 2017 were announced in December newsletter. The info for selling these cards is on our coaches website. It was also emailed to all registered coaches. Jeff Tollette, who handles this card, will sell you team bags, balls, etc at his cost if you’re selling cards. You can contact Jeff at 763-753-6988 for any information if you did not receive your email.

FINAL SHOTS FOR THE SEASONThank you to all of the Section Reps, Executive Council

staff, coaches, the MSHSL staff and administrators for such a great season. We hope to continue to grow the game so the next generation of players can emulate the seven ex-Minnesota high school players who won GOLD medals at this year’s winter Olympics in Korea. We are very proud of the quality of players that Minnesota high school hockey is producing. All coaches throughout the state should be proud to be associated with helping develop, nurture and train these athletes for life after high school. The seven Minnesota gold medal athletes this year is just the tip of the iceberg of the number of players we are impacting each year. Hats off to all for your contributions!!

….AND A REBOUND!The MGHCA Executive Board will be meeting on April

Goal PostsBy: Ron Stolski - Brainerd

Exec. Director MFCA

Fellow coaches,In previous articles for this fine publication

this writer has frequently mused, probably to the dismay of many of you, on the responsibility and virtues of being a keeper of the game. Thoughts like ‘he is at it again’ probably entered your mind on more than one occasion. Today, friends, a respite. The contents of this article will be expository in nature, containing both reporting and saluting the good work of the leaders of our association

The issue of the HeadsUp football blocking and tackling program has been often discussed at various venues and meetings throughout the state. To obtain hard facts about usage of the program, outgoing president Terry Bahlman, Marshall, conducted a statewide survey of programs using the HeadsUp model. He received enough responses for a good sample. A summary of the results indicates the following: High School Programs using the model 61% yes, 39% no.; Middle Schools, 63% yes, 32% no, 5% no middle school program; Youth programs, 57% yes, 26% no, 17% no youth program. Terry’s report includes a number of reasons given for the participation (or lack of) by the participating schools. The complete report will be available to all coaches who attend the MFCA Clinic April 5-7.

In the last few years, much concern has centered on the issue of declining numbers in youth football participation nationally, and specifically, our state. According to a National federation survey taken in 2016, the participation rate in football, nationally, has dropped by 4% in the last TEN years. Participation in nearly all other sports suffered a much steeper decline. Dramatically, though, the greatest decline in football has occurred in the last two years. Obviously 2017 numbers are not in. Scott Gonnerman, Benson, incoming president, recently conducted a survey of our schools re participation rates. 273 head coaches, ranging from 9 man to 6A responded. Each of the 7 classes were represented equally, 75% from outstate, 25% from metro. Over the past three years, 28% of the schools reported a slight decrease in numbers (10% or less), 16% saw numbers decrease (11-15%); 13% had a decrease of more than 15%. 27% of the schools saw no change while 16% saw an increase. A number of reasons were given for both a decrease and/or increase. Again, the complete survey results including a summary of reasons given will be available at the Clinic.

Coaches, this is important research as we continue to lead football and be the keepers of... the most popular sport in our nation and state. To that end there are two initiatives that we must be fully engaged in. One is supporting and attending our Keepers of the Game Clinic, April 5-7. The clinic is a salute to our decade of hosting the clinic, and its success depends on you..all of us. I am excited to announce another exciting initiative that the MFCA, along with the MSHSL and the full support of the Vikings, is a Youth Football Summit, May 5. The one day summit is designed to bring together the leadership

of youth football from every corner of our state for a day of learning and sharing... included are a ‘best practices panel;, a Mom’s panel, presentations by and from head and youth coaches, Uzma Samandini, Matt Birk et all. In the ensuing weeks, and at the Keepers Clinic, you will be receiving more information on this precedent setting effort.

Coaches were are competitors..football is a game worth fighting for. Let’s have at it.

Looking forward to seeing you all again...

MSHSCA SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOROFFICIALS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

The Minnesota State High School Coaches Association has always been aware of the value of officials as an integral part of the high school athletic programs could function

without the dedication that is currently being provided to prep sports by the many officials in Minnesota.

A few years ago, the MSHSCA, in an effort to restore sportsmanship, as it should be, to the stands of high school sporting events, created an Officials Distinguished Service Award.

Coaches who are aware of the outstanding officials in your area that qualify for the award should either nominate the officials directly or contact the area officials associations and urge them to submit the deserving candidates for the award .

This award is presented to five deserving officials at the MSHSCA’a Annual Awards Banquet that is held each year in November .

The MSHSCA has maintained a collective file of nominations but is currently looking for more nominations of the many deserving officials that need to be recognized for their long time service to minnesota high school sports .

Nominations to receive the Officials DSA can be submitted by using the following criteria .

1. Should still be an active official.2. Have been a high school official of varsity competition for

at least 25 years .If you know of a deserving official in your area that satisfies theestablished criteria, complete the accompanying nomination form and send to:John Schumacher16332 Deer View Rd • Park Rapids, MN 56470

MnIAAA CORNERSubmitted by: Charlie Campbell, Brainerd High School,

MnIAAA President

Like many Minnesota residents I enjoyed the attention that we received as the host of Super Bowl LII. As I reflect back on those two weeks of Super Bowl hype, I have decided that I appreciated most two things. First, I enjoyed hearing the recurring theme of ‘MN Nice’ and how welcoming, friendly and kind the people of Minnesota were to all these outsiders taking part-time residence in our wonderful, yet frozen, state. The other was the look-back and comparisons with Minnesota’s other host experience, Super Bowl XXVII in 1993. The changes in EVERYTHING (economy, fashion, the game, the venue, technology, etc.) between the same event, held in the same city, 25 years apart was quite fascinating. Think how sport and sport culture has changed in that time!

As I wrap up my term as MNIAAA president, I’ve been quite reflective about the work that’s been done over the past few years. Interestingly, I am able to draw some parallels of that work to my SB LII experience. ‘MN Nice’ defines our organization and more importantly the people which constitute the membership. Humble, hard-working, committed people who serve and do. For many of us, January and February are long, dark, and lonely days of survival. Yet, we find time to encourage and lift each other up so we can do more than just survive; we are able to get unstuck, to move onward and forward despite the feeling that our wheels are spinning on the ice and we’re not doing anything productive! That is the MNIAAA.

Twenty-five years distance between MN Super Bowls makes me wonder what the MNIAAA will look like in 2043.

At the Spring Conference we will unveil our new MNIAAA logo. It is strong, classy, fresh and professional. It represents the MNIAAA; it is our brand and identity. And I’m excited to reveal it to our membership. Granite coasters have never looked so good!

We will also be tackling a couple of amendments to the MNIAAA Constitution to reflect our movement forward. The first change is to our name. It is important that the name of our organization reflects the way our roles as administrators has evolved and expanded over the years. The proposed name change is subtle, but important- The ‘Minnesota Interscholastic Activities Administrators Association.’ We believe this name is a more accurate description of the organization that supports the work we’re doing each day around the arts and activities, as well as athletics.

Finally, we’re proposing to officially splitting the role of the secretary and treasurer as delineated in the Constitution. This gives future boards the flexibility to match specific skill sets to the various tasks and duties necessary to most effectively lead the organization.

Over the course of the next year, as past-president, I’m going to work with the MNIAAA Board to engage our organization in its third strategic plan. I have a vision of an organization that is more responsive to its membership and their changing needs. I have a vision of an organization that engages more of its membership in meaningful work. I have a vision of an organization that exudes strength and leads progressively-one that is the Gold Standard for all other state associations. We know that change is constant and I’m proud that your Executive Board is pushing our organization onward and forward-though challenging at times.

I look forward to seeing you April 3-5 in St. Cloud.

After the Game Bring Your Team to

Dear Coaches,Soon we will hear the words, “Play Ball!” The preparation

for the season is over and the grind towards achieving team goals begins. There will be celebrations and bumps in the road along the way. It’s time to start writing out lineup cards, adjusting practice plans and building up a pitching staff – welcome to the 2018 season!

Last year, the Pitch Count Rule arrived. If you are new to coaching, tracking pitching counts (and days of rest) for our student-athletes took place in earnest. Coaches all over the USA were mandated to track pitch counts and days of rest between outings. While rules varied among states in terms of the ceiling of the pitch count, in Minnesota our limit (as discussed and decided by a group of coaches, doctors and former players assembled in meetings at the MSHSL offices) was 105 pitches per regular season outing with a 10 pitch increase during playoffs. A mandatory number of rest days was a second featured element to this rule. Be sure to watch your Rules Interpretation online meetings for any more information pertaining to Pitch Count.

This year, we worked hard to see passage of adding an extra 5 optional days (March 12-16) to condition and prepare arms for the season. The expectation is for players to have an optional opportunity for extra time to prepare their arm for the season. Programs do NOT have to plan any activities for this optional

arm conditioning week if they choose not to. Only baseballs and gloves are expected to be used.

The Pitcher as a DH Rule is gone for 2018 and beyond. Your feedback was reported to the National Federation of High Schools, but to no avail. We will go back to traditional high school DH rules for 2018.

Our Play Ball! MN All Star Series Coaches are as follows:Metro East: Kale Henry (Forest Lake) and Ben Johnson

(Woodbury)Metro West: John Buteyn (Eden Prairie), Mark Grundhofer

(Waconia) and Scott Glenn (Minnehaha Academy)Metro North: Jay Brown (Chisago Lakes) and Douge

Schildgen (DeLaSalle)Metro South: Al Iverson (Prior Lake) and Brent Goracke

(Jordan)North: Derek Denny (Parkers Prairie) and Mike Gullingsrud

(Thief River Falls)South: Derrick Jenniges (Westbrook - Walnut Grove) and

Scott Chirpich (Granada-Huntley-East Chain)Our 2018 Play Ball! MN High School All Star Series brought

to you by Cambria, Adidas and Business Impact Group will be held in Chaska June 22-23. Drop on by for our Coach and Player Introductions on Saturday, June 23 as admission for MSHSBCA members and families is free.

There are many responsibilities that come with being a head high school coach. Among them are promoting your team and your student-athletes. Be sure to nominate worthy student-athletes for the 2018 Play Ball! MN All Star Series (nominations are due by May 18.) Also, nominate your top student-athletes for All-Section, All-State Academic and All-State awards. Information on those awards will be available on our newly upgraded web site at www.mshsbca.org and on Twitter @MSHSBCA.

Best of luck in the 2018 season! May every blooper fall within the foul lines for you and every bunt be executed with flawless precision!

30 MINNESOTA PREP COACH

For the past 8 years I have been very fortunate to be involved with the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association, first as a Section Rep, then as President-Elect, and for the past two years as President. I have been coaching high school sports for 18 years. In my 18 years of coaching, this opportunity with the MGBCA has been one of the most rewarding of all the things I have had the opportunity to experience.

It is not an easy time to be a coach. We have heard all the stories. Parents can be challenging. Administration isn’t always supportive. Club and AAU programs have more and more influence on players and families. If you allow yourself the maddening experience of reading the message boards and Twitter conversations that are out there, you come across comments that portray most high school coaches as unqualified, ignorant, lazy, irresponsible teachers who only have the job because of who they know and not what they know. I’ve read that the “politics” of high school sports has become so rampant that there should be no more high school sports and that all sports should be run by the community or private clubs. These perceptions are not reality. What the people that write this trash don’t see is the unbelievable amount of hard work that goes on behind the scenes by current and former high school coaches in an effort to create the best possible experience for kids. High school sports and high school coaches are special and they deserve better than how they are being portrayed by some.

In my 8 years involved with the MGBCA I have gotten to know so many great people. I have been involved in some powerful and influential conversations with some incredible coaches from across the state of Minnesota. These coaches are

doing unbelievable work with young people. I have watched over 200 coaches come to our clinic year in and year out in an attempt to learn, grow, and better themselves in their profession. I have listened to some incredibly powerful presentations from coaches about what they are doing in their programs to build relationships and make kids feel valued and important.

Through my experience with the MGBCA and the MSHSCA, I have had the opportunity to attend meetings at the MSHSL with their leadership. This has allowed me to get to know some of the people involved with the MSHSL and given me better insight to how and why decisions are made at that level. I got to be a part of a meeting that included MSHSL leadership, coaches, and officials. It was an effort to bring together officials and coaches to have a candid conversation about that relationship and what both groups can do to help improve it.

Over the past 8 years I have gained a better understanding of all the work that goes into to recognizing kids as All-State, Academic All-State, All-Star, and Miss Basketball candidates. I’ve watched as our fellow coaches have organized and put on one of the best coaching clinics that I have ever attended year after year. I have seen coaches travel great distances to represent their sections at our section meetings. I have seen emotional and powerful debate about the various issues our sport has and will continue to be faced with. I have been to the MGBCA Hall of Fame breakfast and seen and heard the emotions of these coaches as they talk about what coaching high school sports has meant to them. I have seen the emotions from their families as their loved ones are honored for decades of hard work and sacrifice. I have attended All-Star Weekend, as a coach and as a fan, and seen all the hard work that goes into creating a great and memorable experience for everyone involved.

I have learned from each and every one of these experiences. I have gained understanding, perspective, and grown as a man and as a coach from all of these experiences. I have had the opportunity to see and do all these things and meet all these

incredible people, because I finally decided to get involved. My message to younger and newer coaches is to get involved sooner than later. My message to veteran coaches is to get involved if you haven’t yet or get back involved if you got away from it. Be a section rep. Go to the clinic. Speak at the clinic. Go watch or volunteer at the All- Star game. Be on the All-Tournament Team selection committee at the state tournament. The more you get involved, the more relationships you build, and I promise you that will only better you as a coach.

I want to end by saying “Thank You” to so many people. At this April’s All-Star weekend, my time as President of the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association will come to an end. It has been an amazing 2 years. Liz Carpentier, head coach at Farmington High School, will take over the position. She is ready and will do an incredible job. I want to thank Kent Hamre, for nominating me for the President-Elect position 3 years ago. I want to thank Carl Pierson and Jenny Johnson for their work as Executive Directors of the MGBCA. There is a ton of work associated with that position and you both have done the job with incredible diligence and dedication to the organization. I want to thank all the coaches, section reps, and others who have given their time and energy to the MGBCA. The love you have for our sport and our athletes shines brightly in every conversation I have ever had with each and every one of you. Working with all of you has reinvigorated me as a coach. Finally, I want to thank Pat Barrett. I could not have done the job without your guidance. I am not sure I have met someone more dedicated to the game of girls basketball in the state of Minnesota than you. What you mean to the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association cannot be adequately put in words. For what you have come to mean to me as a mentor and as a friend, all I can say is thank you.

Fastpitch Softball Article

Let the countdown begin until March 12th! It will be here sooner than you think. As we prepare for the upcoming season, I wanted to share a couple of reminders.

First, please make sure to bookmark our association page, http://www.mshsca.org/fastpitchsoftball, as there are a lot of valuable resources on the page. If you have not done so already, please update the coaches win club. We love to recognize those coaches who reach coaching milestones at our annual clinic, but can only do that if your records are up to date. You will also will find the link for membership to the association. Please encourage all of your coaching staff to become members so they can take advantage of the benefits, especially the million dollar liability policy. Please remember as well that the head coach needs to be a member of the association in order for your student athletes to be recognized for association sponsored awards such as All- Section, All-State Academic and Athletic and All-Star. The deadline to become a member is April 1st.

Second, the deadlines for the aforementioned awards are also listed on our webpage. Academic All-State, both team and individual, nominations are due on April 6th. All-Star nominations are due at 10 PM on April 29th and All-State nominations are due at 10 PM on May 27th. These deadlines are firm as there is a very short turnaround time for awards to be made. Please remember to nominate your deserving student athletes for these awards. We have a lot of talented softball players from all over the state and we want to get them recognized!

The annual MFCA Coaches Clinic was hosted at Becker this past February 2nd. We had a good turn out despite poor weather and it being SuperBowl weekend. We would like to thank Coach Spoehr and Coach Mueller from NDSU, Coach Tschida from St. Thomas, Coach Walcott and Coach Hildreth from MSU-Mankato and Coach Alto from Anoka Ramsey for sharing some great philosophy, fundamentals and drills. We would also like to thank Cindra Kamphoff and Kate Leavell for sharing great advice about developing mental toughness and positive team culture in our programs. Those that attended got a lot of information that they could implement from day one in their upcoming seasons.

The section rep meeting also took place that weekend. Some of the information discussed and shared at the meeting were the proposals to the MSHSL regarding an extra week of contact at the beginning of the season for conditioning our throwers. The proposal is not specific to pitchers and catchers, but is limited to balls and gloves only. As an association, we are re-submitting a proposal to NOT be exempt from the

participation on outside-team rule, which is in line with almost all other sports. This proposal is now a softball only proposal, not connected to the other teams that have an exception to this same rule. Caswell Park in North Mankato also asked for our input on new fencing that would be purchased and used for tournaments. We are pleased to have a good working relationship with this facility and city. We are pleased that the Minnesota Twins will continue with their sponsorship of our All-Star series. We are looking to expand on this relationship and continue to improve our series. A special thank you to Coach Terry Sadler from Warroad for negotiating a 5 year contract between our association and Russell/Dudley. We are thankful for this continued relationship between our two organizations.

Last, please remember to keep up to date on your coaches clipboard which can be accessed through the www.mshsl.org page. The online rules meeting will open on March 5th. If you have any questions at all, make sure to contact your section rep or myself.

I leave you thinking about the words of Jenny Finch, “Try not to get lost in comparing yourself to others. Discover your gifts and let them shine! Softball is amazing that way as a sport. Everyone on the field has a slightly different ability that makes them perfect for their position.” Remember the influence you have on your student athletes. Make this the best class they ever took in high school! Good luck on the upcoming season!

If you were to need anything, please contact your section representative or feel free to email me at [email protected].

Respectfully, Laura Olson - Maple River High School
