  • Room 23 has had a great start to the year and in our classroom we are working hard to create a

    warm and colourful environment in which to work with beautiful displays of artwork and class work.

    Our attractive collage flowers are yet to be hung.

    We have worked hard on our personal profiles, which look terrific and have just begun an in-class

    research project.

    The behaviour has been great with our class, Room 23, understanding and following the TRIBES

    Agreements both inside and outside the classroom.

    Last week it was our assembly and with the help of Ms Bunney and the students from Room 26 we

    sang the song Counting Stars .. Just like a choir! (We thought we were pretty good anyway!!)

    We also discovered that we had some fine actors in our room and they performed three skits

    magnificently.

    Still more talent! The gymnasts of Room 23 put on an awesome display of handsprings,

    cartwheels, bend backs, double flips and back flips. Wow!

  • Assembly

    Well done to Room 23 on a terrific assembly.

    What fabulous performers and speakers you all

    are!

    Next Friday's assembly will be hosted by Year

    4/5 students of Room 24. The school looks

    forward to all family and friends attending. Dont

    forget the new start time of 9am.

    Medication

    A reminder to parents that if you wish any staff

    member to administer medication to your child

    e.g.: antibiotics, cough medicine, you must fill in a

    form called Health Care Authorisation. This

    gives legal permission for the administration of

    medication. Forms are available from the Office.

    Parents as Partners

    Yakamia Primary School enjoys strong support

    from our parent community. As I move around

    the school every morning parents and family

    members can regularly be seen in classrooms

    supporting reading programs; helping with class

    activities; excursions and volunteering in the

    canteen.

    Developing and fostering strong relationships

    between the home and school is fundamental to

    developing a strong school culture so, on behalf of

    the Yakamia staff, Id like to say thank you.

    Win back your Voluntary Contributions!

    Pay your childs school fees before the end of

    Term 1 and you will go into the raffle to win back

    the money!

    Three prizes are up for grabs. One entry is given

    to every child who has paid. (i.e. a family with 3

    children attending YPS, will have 3 chances to

    win).

    Driver Beware

    Parents are reminded to take the greatest of care

    when driving in the school zones. It has been

    great to see most drivers being aware and doing a

    great job around the school. We would like to

    take this opportunity to thank you and to ask

    that you keep up the careful driving.

    The following are general reminders that lead to

    safe passage for all students:

    Use only the drop off and pick up zone for

    dropping children off or picking up children

    at school;

    When using the drop-off and pick up zone,

    please continue to move forward to keep the

    traffic flowing;

    Do not park in the drop-off /pick up zone

    before or after school;

    Model to children the need to use only the

    guarded crosswalks in Beaufort Road when

    crossing the road;

    Only park in designated parking areas (do

    not park in the staff car parks, obstruct

    resident driveways or school driveways, do

    not park on grass areas adjacent to the

    school);

    Observe the 40 km/hour speed limit sign

    before and after school as designated;

    Park away from the school and encourage

    children to walk a safe route whilst

    fostering active lifestyles;

    No parking in bus bays or Canteen delivery

    area;

    Be very vigilant on wet days;

    Do not turn across the traffic when using

    the car park at the North Road end of the

    school;

    And remember to be patient!

  • Kids love to be active. Physical activity can be

    fun and can easily be added into their daily

    routine. Physical activity is important for growth

    and development and is a great way for kids to

    make friends and learn physical and social skills.

    Children need at least 60 minutes (and up to

    several hours) of moderate to vigorous

    physical activity every day.

    Children should not spend more than two

    hours a day using electronic media for

    entertainment (e.g. computer games, TV,

    internet, handheld games), especially

    during daylight hours.

    What can a parent do now?

    We can all play a role in encouraging and

    supporting our kids to be active. Offering a range

    of physical activities can set them up for life.

    Suggestions include

    Be a role model be active when youre with

    your children

    Include physical activity in family outings

    Support active play, recreation and

    participation in sport

    Encourage and support walking and cycling to

    school

    Think of active alternatives when you hear

    Im bored

    Be prepared have a box at home and in the

    car with balls, a Frisbee, a kite, bats etc

    Negotiate a limit on time spent surfing the

    net, watching TV and playing computer games

    Walk and Talk practice spelling,

    multiplication and other homework with your

    child

    Give gifts or toys that promote physical

    activity such as balls, bats, skipping ropes, skates

    or bikes.

    Homework Habits by Professor Matt

    Sanders

    Homework is an accepted part of every childs

    schooling. However, it doesnt have to become a

    family battle. The key is for parents and children

    to be prepared.

    Your child should have a set, regular time for

    homework that fits in around your schedule and

    your childs other commitments such as sport or

    music lessons.

    Homework should come at a time after your child

    has had a chance to relax after arriving home and

    before they are allowed to play or watch

    television.
