ACADEMIC REPORT

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Student learning and improvement is consistently at the forefront of our minds here at Tauranga Intermediate. The  importance of learning partnerships and the role that you as parents and families play in these partnerships is vital.

In Week 9 we will be holding our first learning conferences for the year. This will be another opportunity for the learning partnerships between your child, their classroom teacher and yourself to be consolidated. More information about these conferences will come in a fortnights time. This information will include ways in which you can ensure you as parents/caregivers are well informed about your child’s learning.

Below we have attached a section from an Education Review Office pamphlet that supports parents with understanding how your child is doing and questions you can ask to become more involved in their learning. Please take the time to read through it. You can access the entire pamphlet at:

http://www.ero.govt.nz/Review-Process/For-Parents/ERO-Guides-for-Parents/How-is-my-child-doing-Questions-to-ask-at-school

Update on Changes to

Tauranga School Bus ServicesA bus fare that is lower than the current BayHopper public service fare will be offered to students travelling on BayHopper services as part of the transition from Ministry of Education-funded “out of policy” school transport in Tauranga in 2015.

The fare will apply during the transition from Ministry of Education-funded services to new services, which will be provided by Bay of Plenty Regional Council.

Changes to Tauranga school bus services will come into effect from the start of the 2015 school year, and schools, parents and the wider community will be consulted and asked for input to help shape the new services.

Councillors on Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Public Transport Subcommittee have agreed in principle to a reduced fare being introduced from the start of 2015, in anticipation of greater numbers of students using public transport when Ministry of Education-funded services cease.

Due to the cost of providing extra capacity, a fare has to be charged and the Regional Council Public Transport Subcommittee has agreed in principle to charge a reduced rate for school students. The exact fare is yet to be worked out but will be less than the current child rate of between $1.44 (Smartride) and $1.80 (cash). About 3000 students will be affected by the school transport changes, of a total of about 23,000 attending schools in the Tauranga urban area. The Council’s Public Transport Subcommittee will need to revisit the in-principle decision as more information comes to hand and will make a final decision on the actual fare later in the year.

The Ministry of Education is withdrawing from providing “out of policy” school transport in Tauranga following improvements to Tauranga’s bus network by the regional council since 2001. Because students in the Tauranga area have access to suitable public transport, the Ministry will no longer fund ineligible students’ school travel and Bay of Plenty Regional Council is now planning and consulting on replacement services which it will provide.

Nothing will change until 2015 - the Ministry of Education will continue funding school bus services until then to allow the Regional Council time to plan for the transition. The Regional Council wants the community to help shape the new SchoolHopper bus service and will work with schools and the wider community, including affected students and parents, to develop transport solutions together.

Not all students currently using Ministry of Education school bus services will be affected.

At this stage the Regional Council is working with the Ministry to determine the routes – some may be discontinued. The regional council will keep the public up to date with progress as information comes to hand and the community will be able to have an input at various stages as the form of the new service takes shape.

We encourage you to check out the BayBus website for more information and to find out how you can have your say. Go to www.baybus.co.nz and click through to the SchoolHopper link.

BackgroundIn March 2010 the Ministry of Education and Bay of Plenty District Council signed a memorandum of understanding to work together to align the provision of school transport. The MOE acknowledged the Ministry is required to withdraw from providing “out of policy” school transport in Tauranga.

Many students already use existing BayHopper services with children making up about 20 percent of bus patrons.

Regional Council’s transport team put forward three options for potential fare solutions for the transition, recommending Option 3, which the Bay of Plenty Regional Council Public Transport Subcommittee has adopted:

1)    Implement the fare policy in the Regional Public Transport Plan, which does not include a concessionary fare scheme specifically for students;

2)    Charge students the same fares as they are currently charged on BayHopper urban services ($1.80 per ride for cash or $1.44 with a Smartride card);

3)    Lower (than the current BayHopper urban service) fares than currently being charged.

Sue Baker, Adolescent Public Health Nurse (APHN)

This is to inform parents that Sue Baker, Adolescent Public Health Nurse (APHN), will continue to provide a service for our students and families/whanau in relation to health and wellbeing. As part of this service, she will run a Self Referral Clinic at school, again this year.

Students are able to speak with her freely and confidentially regarding health issues and concerns that may impact on them physically or mentally.

There is a “drop-box” at the library, for students to leave their name, room number and reason they wish to see the APHN. Sue comes into the school on Tuesdays, and attendance at clinic is at students’ discretion.

Parents and teachers may also refer students with health concerns to the APHN. If you have any queries, please contact Sue directly or via the school office. Sue Baker, Adolescent Public Health Nurse, BOPDHB, phone 5773383. Email: [email protected]
