 Steps

1. Fill a microwave safe glass or bowl half way with water with a table spoon of white vinegar and place inside the microwave.

Turn on for 5 minutes. The idea here is to steam up the walls of the microwave and loosen the dried-on gunk.

2. When it is done, remove the glass container and wipe down the inside of microwave with a clean towel or paper towel.

3. The loose gunk should come off easily now, and without chemical cleaners inside the microwave.

4. Take out the glass tray or turntable and wash it like a dish. You could even run it through the dishwasher if you have the

time.Alternative Method:

1. Cut a lemon in half and place both halves cut-side down on a mirowaveable plate with a tablespoon of water

2. Microwave for about 1 minute or until the lemon is hot and the inside of the microwave is steamy.

3. Wipe the inside of the microwave with kitchen paper and wash the plate as above(NB - now the lemon is hot and squishy it makes a great natural cleanser for a smelly garbage disposal, cut the halves into

smaller pieces and flush through with plenty of water)

Tips

• Leave the microwave open for a few minutes afterward, to let it dry and air out a bit inside.

• To keep your microwave clean, cover food loosely when heating it.

• Pour some lemon juice mixed with an equal amount of water in a bowl and microwave for a couple of minutes until boiling.

Let stand for a few minutes. This will eliminate any odor in the microwave.

• Use a scrub-brush that can be used for washing dishes to get off greasy food build-up you may find.

White vinegar and/or baking soda in the water will also help clean better and dispel odors. The soda is especially good if the

spatters are greasy.

How To Fill Your Dorm Room With What You Need

 Steps

1. Write a list of the stuff you know you need, that's not general. (Know you need stuff: spe-

cial pillow or blanket, photo album, religious articles, medication etc)

2. Take this list to a trusted college graduate who can help you decide what you should proba-

bly leave at home. (Grandmothers Tiffany lamp, Diamond studded necklaces, family heir-

looms that are irreplaceable)

3. Start thinking about what necessities you need. Those necessities are; a couple pairs of shoes, clothes that are of a wide range (bring summer and winter stuff), shower and bath-

room stuff, entertainment stuff

Tips

Wait until you have moved into your dorm before you begin buying a lot of things. You may

find after you get there that that really cool organizer bin will not fit in the room, or the doorsare not set up for organizers to be hung from them.

How To Live With A College Roommate Who Is Your Total Opposite

 Steps

1. Talk. If something's bugging you, bring it up in a non-defensive way. Don't assume that your

roommate can read your mind. Nothing can change unless you acknowledge it. It's possible

that your roommate may not even be aware of the problem.2. Focus on behavior, not personality. It's not reasonable to ask people to change who they are,

but you can ask them to tone down how they express themselves, especially when it's invad-ing your turf. So, you can't criticize someone for being "perky," but you can ask someone

not to talk so much while you're studying.

3. Stay flexible. It's not your job to fix anybody else, and it helps to recognize that no one is

perfect. Be willing to look at your own behavior. Consider what you could do differently tohelp the situation instead of only blaming your roommate.

4. Start with one pet peeve. What can you absolutely not deal with? What do you find ex-

tremely irritating, but could live with if you had to? There are probably tons of things your roommate does that get on your nerves. However, nothing kills a relationship faster than

listing dozens of reasons why you don't like a person. Instead, both of you need to list your

number one pet peeve and focus your energy on solving that first.

5. Consider the positives. Before you decide that life would be better with a roommate exactly

like you, think of what you could gain by living with your opposite. We're often attracted to

people who are different from us because they represent qualities we wish we possessed. If

you're shy, maybe being around a more outgoing person will force you out of your shell.

When one person's strength makes up for the other's weakness, being opposites is an advan-tage.

6. Know the residence hall policies. Make sure to understand the residence hall policies regard-

ing roommate conflicts and changes. Some colleges will require you to go through the stepsof mediation before requesting a roommate change, and others have trained students who

will help you through the process.

7. Accept them for who they are. If you are total opposites, it may be difficult to understand

where they are coming from in many situations. If you accept things about their personality,

interests, taste, etc. you are much less likely to come into conflict.

Tips

• Setting up a roommate contract at the beginning of the year that addresses different issues

that might come up like sharing clothes, when music can be played, overnight visitorsamong other things can be helpful in settling disputes.

• Resident/Community Assistants can be useful mediators if roommates cannot solve their

differences, but do not expect them to magically fix things. They need both parties to

work together to come to an amiable solution.

• Helpful books to read are

• A Roommate Surival Guide and

• My Roommate Is Driving Me Crazy! Solve Conflicts, Set Boundaries, and Survive the Col-

lege Roommate From Hell (Adams Media).

 Steps

1.Acquire a sophisticated vocabulary. No-

body will be hanging on to your ever word

if you only know 80 words. Read a lot of  books! They will supply you with all the

mesmerizing adjectives and dumbfounding

verbs you could ever possibly need.

2. Maintain a creative view point on the

world. Watch the world around you care-

fully, taking it all in, so when someone

asks you your opinion on something, itisn't a typical "I think this is good be-

cause...." You will be able to express a

fascinating opinion on any subject no mat-

ter how boring.

3. When you have your vocabulary and crea-

tive opinions on the world; you must have

good presentation skills. The simplest andmost important aspect of presentation skills

is too make eye contact. To captivate your

audience with your words you must hold

their gaze. It shows confidence and shows

that you know what you are talking about.

4. Know when to raise and lower the volume

of your voice for dramatic effect so your

listener are aching to hear you speak on.

5. Smile! It shows major confidence and con-

viction, nobody will dare to question you if you emanate such confident vibes.

6. Keep the conversation dynamic so nobody

will get bored, keep advancing the topic.

This involves quick thinking by the

speaker.

7. Know which subjects to target at differ-

ent people. A girl will not want to dis-

cuss wrestling or a nerd will not want todiscuss sport.

8. Keep the eye contact, smiling and theat-

rical qualities to your words constant

throughout your conversation. This can

be a priceless quality for later life. It can

never hurt to have good presentation

skills.

Tips

• Always show that you know exactly

what you are talking about (even if you

don't fool them with your wit and per-formance skills.)

• Present yourself well, be clean and tidy;

it shows intelligence and authority withwhich nobody will argue against you.

• Know your audience when you speak

with them, lead the conversation downangles you and they will be able to easily

talk about.

• Often talk about a special talent of yours

(if you have one) weave your words

around that subject and people will soon

think you are incredible and talented.Do this often to someone you are attracted to.

People will love intelligence and the abil-

ity to have a thrilling conversation; you

may be rewarded for your use of the 'gab'

 Steps

1. If you are used to AM-PM style timing,

think of the AM hours being the same as

the first 12 hours in the 24-hour cycle of

military time.

2. If there is a time that reads a number over

12 for the hour, know that it is now PM. If a

military-timed clock reads over 12 in the

hours, subtract 12 from the hours and that willget you the time in PM.

• 1300 = 1:00PM

• 1400 = 2:00PM

• 1500 = 3:00PM

• 1600 = 4:00PM

• 1700 = 5:00PM

• 1800 = 6:00PM• 1900 = 7:00PM

• 2000 = 8:00PM

• 2100 = 9:00PM

• 2200 = 10:00PM

• 2300 = 11:00PM

• 0000 = 12:00AM

Similarly, you can remember military time

by adding 12 to any PM time. For example,

5PM would be 5 + 12, or 1700.

Tips

• Practice makes perfect!

If you have a digital

watch, there may be a

setting that allows you

to switch the time dis- play form the 12 hour

cycle to the 24 hour cy-

cle.

• Also, another easy-to-

use method is to sub-

tract 2 from the second

digit and sometimes 1

from the first digit. Ex:17:00-2=5:00 22:00-

2=10:00

• In military time, there

are no colons. "1635"

would be pronounced

"sixteen thirty-five"

• Also midnight can be

2400 instead of 0000

Subject: SGA General Meeting postponed for tonight....

Sorry for the short notice (Rick, Mike and Russ), but we are going to postpone the SGAGeneral Meeting for tonight…..reason is that we want to have this meeting be a littlemore formalized/meaningful, with a pre-meeting Agenda published prior to the meet-ing. The SGA has been working hard and doing a lot of things, including becoming atax exempt entity with its own Federal tax id number which will be happening in the near future……and we have not been able to focus as much as we would like on makingsure that the General Meeting becomes a productive meeting…so it will happen thismonth on a Monday, and we will give you at least a weeks notice….thanks…...

Dane,

I'm extremely pleased to see this kind of energy and excellence. No problem withthe change - I'd much rather we be flexible and accomodating and offer our supportto this group that is obviously dedicated and trying hard to do their best. My vote isfor doing whatever is necessary to help them achieve their goals. Thanks for your leadership!Rick
