NEWSLETTER Aim high, go far...

Next P&C Meeting– 7th October, 2020

This week we received our Review feedback which is overwhelmingly positive and really has articulated well the success of the work we’ve done in 2020. We have four key findings to work on over the next four years which as a school we had identified as our next steps. The majority of this work is to embed the processes we’ve already begun and to sharpen the focus of some of the work to target further areas. I have emailed a copy of this document out to families and it will be available for download off the school website by the end of the term also. On Monday we celebrated Support Staff Appreciation week by sharing a cake with our amazing team of support staff. We genuinely appreciate all the work this team of staff do to contribute to the effective running of our school. On Tuesday we had the Police Liaison Officers visit for lunchtime so they were able to play soccer and tennis with the students. It is really great to see this partnership come together. On Thursday morning Dave Taylor from Queensland Ambulance Service spoke to the students about what they can do to keep themselves safe and what they should do when they need to con-tact an ambulance. We really appreciate Dave giving his time to help the students to be well informed in emergency situations. On Saturday at 12pm, Fola from Centacare will be running soccer training on the school oval. This is due to Futsal having to be cancelled on Monday afternoon due to his other work commit-ments. It would be great to have students and their families attend. Until further notice the Kids Activities at the Council facilities has been postponed. Please also be aware that children under the age of 10 can not swim at the pool without supervision of an adult. Next week is going to be a very busy week. On Tuesday we have the excursion to the Les Wilson Barramundi Centre, on Wednesday we have students visiting Normanton to play hockey and on Friday we have a free dress day and a transition day for the Kindergarten students. In classes, students will also be constructing their Litter Critters which will go on display during the Outback by the Sea festival. Have a great weekend.

CURRICULUM NEWS

P-3 CLASS

This week in P-3 we have been working hard to complete assessments. We have been explor-ing informative reports and using ICT tools to type them up to complete our multimodal as-sessments. We have then been exploring 2D and 3D shapes for maths and exploring forces for science.

4-6 CLASS:

Students have been work-ing hard on completing as-sessments for end of term. Our spelling focus this week was on reviewing term words and using a diction-ary and thesaurus to extend

word knowledge and vocabu-lary. Place value maths games were very popular as fast finish-es in maths.

HPE

This week students had the opportunity to select sports equipment to create a game for others to

play. Students were very creative in setting up two, three and four player games. Students created

rules and ways to score points.

THE ARTS

This week in the Arts, year 5 and 6 have been working on practicing interview skills for documen-

taries. This was a fun activity that all students enjoyed as they were able to interview each other

and get to know different things about each other and Miss Neal. It was a great lesson!

TECHNOLOGIES

This week the P-2 students learnt about algorithms and used them to

find items on grids. Once they had the hang of it they were able to

program the Bee Bots to move around a treasure island and the

snakes and ladders mat. The students had a great time and it was

awesome to see them understanding how computer program works in

its simplest form.

An introduction to your new acting Principal

‘Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high’ was a song once made famous by Israel ‘IZ’ Kamakawiwo’ole. Since learning of

Karumba State School and the community of Karumba, I haven’t been able to get that song out of my head. I’ve been humming it

on repeat. In the first chorus he says that somewhere, over the rainbow there’s a land that he’s heard of once in a lullaby.

My name is Michael Richards and I am very excited to have the opportunity to become part of the Karumba State School commu-

nity and to journey alongside our wonderful staff, students, families and community members. Most recently, I have been work-

ing as a Head of Special Education Services, Deputy Principal and Principal in Central Queensland. The opportunity to join the

Karumba State School community and to become the Chief Enthusiasm Officer of the best school in Queensland is an opportunity

to work with the best staff in Queensland, teach the best students in Queensland and serve the best families in Queensland.

As I travel up to join our Karumba State School staff in Term 4, I wish to thank and acknowledge Tanya for all her hard work and

dedication to Karumba State School and to the community throughout 2020. I wish you, Tanya, all the best at your new school

and I hope you enjoy a wonderful Week 10 and a much earned September holiday.

When speaking with family, friends and colleagues, Karumba sounds like a place that is only heard of once in a lullaby – a place

where ‘somewhere over the rainbow, the skies are blue, and the clouds high over the rainbow, makes all our dreams come true’ .

In other words a place where we ‘Aim High and Go Far!’ I wish everyone all the best for Week 10 and look forward to meeting

everyone throughout the Outback by the Sea festival in Week 2 of the holidays.
