The third-year students from the Class of 2009 returned to their first Doctoring 3 session of the New Year, all rested from their holiday time away. The case discussion, lecture and test were on the Worried Patient. Just like the worries and anxieties the third-year students had about clinical medicine when they first arrived at the Sarasota campus six months ago, patients have their own worries and anxieties. Our students learn how to evaluate these complex cases using their recall of basic science from the first two years of medical school in Tallahassee and their newly acquired clinical knowledge from our clinical faculty. Our students have done remarkably well, thanks to help from our clinical faculty. The success of our regional campus is totally dependent upon the good will and good teaching of our faculty physicians. In time, our students will incorporate the clinical skills they learn here into their evolving approach to patient care. The fear the students experienced at the beginning of their third- year will fade and be replaced with caution, which will remain with them throughout their practice lives. I believe that a good clinician harbors a trace of anxiety when caring for patients. This anxiety helps assure better patient care by improving concentration and will ultimately help our students become better physicians. Based on how I witness our students grow personally and professionally, I do not fear for the quality of our future physicians. Thats a good thingand one less thing for me to worry about. What began as a vision in spring 2006 soon produced a collaborative process between the FSU College of Medicine and the USF College of Education in determining the local needs of our community teaching physicians as it relates to faculty development. Through a grant from the SMH HealthCare Foundation we were able to evaluate the faculty development needs of our community physicians and align those needs with academic curriculum.

The project study used a mixed-method approach of focus groups and surveys with a

Congratulations to two FSU College of Medicine faculty members who have received high honors from Sarasota Memorial. T. Patrick Fitzgerald, MD, was named 2007 Physician of the Year, and J. Robert Spencer, MD, was awarded the hospital’s 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award, at the Annual Medical Staff Meeting on October 23rd. Both award recipients were nominated by their peers and selected by a committee of physician leaders.

Washington Hill, MD, Clerkship Director for OB/GYN at the FSU College of Medicine has been named Chief of Staff at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

The 2007-2008 Annual Fund was launched in November. The theme of this years’ fund, “Everyone Counts” reminds us how much we depend on the generosity of others. Gifts to the Annual Fund provide our campus with unrestricted dollars that support key initiatives such as faculty development, programming, scholarships and special events for our students.

Please consider making a gift to the Annual Fund. State funding has been cut and private support is more critical than ever. Your participation, at any level, is appreciated and will continue to advance our medical school and our mission.

Fourth-year medical student Paola Dees has been inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. In 2007, a Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) chapter was established at the Florida State University College of Medicine. This

newest initiative from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation honors senior medical students, residents, role-model physician teachers and other exemplars recognized for “demonstrated excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service”. Between 10-15% of the graduating class is selected through a process including nominations from both peers and faculty.

Fourth-year medical student Moya Chin has been selected as one of 12 medical students nationwide to receive a $10,000 American Medical Association Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow Scholarship. Moya plans to pursue psychiatry as her specialty because she

wants to make a difference in the lives of medically underserved mental health patients.

Chin has served as president of the Student National Medical Association at FSU and was chosen as Organizational President of the Year in 2005-06. Her community involvement includes participating in migrant health fairs in Tallahassee and rural Florida, serving as a mentor in elementary schools and participating in medical outreach trips.

Ashley Bassford and Paola Dees, two fourth-year medical students, have been elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

“Receiving this recognition is a momentous event in the lives of these students,” said Dr. Bruce Berg, Dean of the Sarasota Campus. “From a class of only 11 fourth-year students studying at the Sarasota campus, having two selected for induction is significant,” added Berg.

Often referred to as “Phi Beta Kappa for medical schools,” AΩA is the only national medical honor society whose mission recognizes and enhances professionalism, academic excellence, service and leadership within the profession. Since its founding in 1902, Alpha Omega Alpha has added more than 100,000 members to its rolls and has over 124 chapters in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. One basic premise of the Society is that election to AΩA is not only a capstone
