Over the last 12 weeks, we have changed how we have gathered as a congregation. We've worked together to find new ways to be the church to our community. We have adapted continuing ministries and it is now clear that even a global pandemic won't keep us apart. We have held Sunday school and Connection Groups online, created an online worshiping community, and engaged in missional activities in different ways. Calvary UMC has continued to share the love and grace of Jesus Christ and I am thankful for all of you. The Calvary UMC COVID-19 Task Force and the church staff presented the plan “Safe Steps to the Sanctuary” to the Church Council on June 9th and it was approved by consensus. This plan moves us into a new phase of ministry on June 21st. We have learned this spring that we are safer at home, but now we believe we can be safe in small groups (less than 20 people meeting outdoors) if we follow CDC guidelines. From June 21st to August 15th, we are going to follow the model of the early church in the Book of Acts and form house churches. Acts 2:46-47 says, “Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.” In these house churches, we will study, watch online worship, and pray together. We hope Sunday School classes or Connection Groups will form house churches so that we can meet face to face. If you are not a part of a Sunday School class or Connection Group, you will be given the chance to sign up for a new class or join an already existing group. The groups will be able to sign up for a space to meet at the church (e.g. the covered portico or down by the labyrinth) or they can choose to meet outside at someone’s home and participate in the online worship together. Talk to your small groups this weekend and let Pastor Stephanie know if you would like to try and meet together. This might even be a great time to invite some friends to join you. In Acts, we learn that day by day they added to those who were in relationship with God. The early church grew while they met in homes. You are also invited to join us for two outdoor worship services on June 28 and July 19 at 6:30 p.m. We are having worship at night to take advantage of shade in the front of the church and to avoid the summer heat (as much as possible). The highlight of the services will be the celebration of Holy Communion. In July, we will honor our graduates. More details to come about outdoor worship, but mark your calendars and join us! Next week, we will send a special edition of From Our Hill that will contain a letter from Pastor B.J., the summer schedule of activities, the results of our recent survey, and frequently asked questions that will lay out our plans for the summer. Above all else, let us spend time this summer joining together with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. Hope to see you soon, Pastor B.J. The YCS has re-opened with COVID19

modifications and procedures including

staff and children wearing masks while transitioning from one place to another, taking temperatures upon arrival and mid-day, staff wearing protective smocks,

additional staff and more detailed cleaning. All is going so well! The children are happy to be back and

immediately adjusted to wearing their masks (proudly!!) and being dropped off and taken into the building by staff as we limit our space to only staff

and children. Well thought out plans have made our new school procedures go seamlessly.

While you were out, we have been working to improve the safety, appearance, and functionality of our facilities. We replaced the 1980’s worn out, unsafe and very brown treads with new “visually impaired” treads that are much prettier and much safer. I wear trifocals, and with the old treads, it was sometimes not easy to discern where one tread stopped and the other started. These have a ‘grit strip’ near the edge of each tread that helps with differentiating where steps end and also adds a slip resistant component. The confetti color compliments with our building standard colorways. The were funded through designated memorial funds as approved by the Trustees Committee. I am not easily excited, but this one really excites me. We will continue our “While you were out” series in upcoming editions of FOH. ~Dlo

Tennyson’s “Charge of

the Light Brigade” is a

tale of miscommunication

and failure where a

British Light Cavalry unit

was mistakenly ordered

into a full-on frontal

assault against a well-

positioned and prepared

gun battery during the

Crimean War. The Light

Brigade charged valiantly

into withering direct fire

and were forced into

retreat after suffering

staggering casualties and

achieving no tactical

gains.

Calvary has a cavalry of

valiant and loyal

volunteers who earned the moniker “The Light Brigade” when they spent a week converting most of our

church’s fluorescent light fixtures to LED. Failure is not in their vocabulary.

They showed up last week again and unlike their namesakes, they emerged victorious once again.

Tommy Leek, Tom Anderson, Vin Walkup, Terry Carty, Bob Harwell, Andrea Walkup, Ann Walkup and

Jim Vaughter showed up on the Tuesday after Memorial Day to begin an attempt to clean our

sanctuary’s pews. We didn’t necessarily know what their efforts might produce, but we armed them with

cleaning supplies, polyurethane, and a mission and they prevailed! They cleaned and scrubbed all the

pews’ painted white surfaces and polyurethane coated the end caps and pew back tops. This was an

incredibly tough chore, but this bunch persevered and prevailed. The results are stunning. I had not

anticipated such a wonderful result. While the work was more arduous than we had imagined, the

results were worth the effort. I was falling all over myself trying to thank them for their efforts, and I was

told, “It was a labor of love.”

And that is what it is all about. Love is about giving. It is an honor to work in this place that is full of

givers. That is what we have here at Calvary. Thanks to all who helped on this project and thanks to all

who give so tirelessly to make this church work.

Peace, Dlo

Are you interested in a new emerging ministry at Calvary? We’re looking for volunteers that would like to learn how to put our weekly worship services LIVE on the internet! You need to possess a willingness to use a computer and learn the basic vocabulary and equipment used in TV production. We’ll provide the training and practice opportunities for you

to become proficient. This opportunity is an excellent way to contribute to Calvary’s worship ministry while we’re not currently worshiping in-person.

Interested? Text or email Andy Morris – 615-479-4413; [email protected]

NEW MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY!

Feeling mission deprived?

Want to help your neighbor?

Want to see some in-person Calvary faces from a distance?

We all know how the price of food has increased in the past couple of

months. Imagine if you had to survive on food stamps to make it to the end of the month.

On June 27th, the Holy Smokers will be hosting our annual June event for Urban Housing Solutions.

We are working with Calvary's Covid-19 taskforce as well as UHS to figure out how to best distribute

meals to the residents of Mercury Court. We will either cook and package the meals at Calvary, or cook

and serve the meals at UHS with social distancing. We will not be setting up tables to eat on like we

have done in the past. We will have more information as we get closer to June 27th.

Again, please save the date, June 27th. If you have any questions, please call Paul Cole at 615.478.1233.
