This editorial is more of practical orientation, since I am giving some tips for going on exchange.

KyUAS’s partner institutions can be found in Studying-Student Exchange-Partner Institutions. The most important thing for you to consider are deadlines and the lists of required documents. The earlier you apply the better. You need to make sure that you will get all the documents them done before the application starts. For non- EU students, consider when your passport and visa are ex-piring and apply for new documents. Another thing to reconsider is the demand for the insurance. Some universities apply on your behalf, some demand the insurance separately.

The overview of subject choice has to be considered carefully. You can even contact International Office to get the subject choice form. Make a comparison table with the course in KyUAS and the host institution and check for compatibility. For the first half of the year you have to gain 30 credits. In UK, the system is dif-ferent from ECTS, so be conscious with this as well. Pay special attention to the courses of your time during the exchange. When you come on exchange you might encounter the situation that the courses in host institution overlap. In this case, try to look at the curricula of the previous year or try to find an alternative course in exchange curricula.

Then consider the overall cost of living. The most expensive ones are Scandinavian countries, such as Norway, Denmark and Swe-den, Switzerland, The Netherlands and France. For instance, the minimum requirement for one semester in the Netherlands is 6.200 euros on the bank account. However, the sum can be more. Situation with accommodation has to be overlooked. In The Hague the cheapest student accommodation was 370 €, though you would have had to share a room with someone. Also consider the travel opportunities. What countries are nearby? Is there good transportation connection? Then consider the city you are going to apply to. Last but not least is the language of the country In some countries it is impossible to survive without knowing the local language. Therefore, take time and get some study books. When applying to the Netherlands, I was lucky enough because the locals were able to speak English fluently.

And do not forget about KyUAS. Exchange is rather training but not a vacation, despite the common opinion.

You may have noticed that there are so many new faces in the university after the New Year holidays. Every semester, Kyamk has new exchange students coming from different parts of the world. They choose Finland as their new destination for study, and there is always an interesting story behind their decision.

We met Ashley Wilmot when she was having a break between classes. With her charming Scottish accent, she told us she was impressed by the fact that people here speak English very well. For Meindert Rozendal, who comes from Netherlands, the reason for going to Finland was simple: “It is cold here” he said. He also said that his friend – who had done his ex-change study in Kyamk two years ago recommended him to come here also. Some of them decided to come here because they wanted to know something totally different from their own countries. Coming from Nantes, Matylda Benoist said that Kouvola is much smaller but still a beautiful town and she was amazed that students can go to the university during the weekend and stay until 11 pm on weekdays, which she could

not do back in France. Even people who come from Russia, which is a similar country to Finland, also found delightful to be here, as Nikolai Bondarev said.

We all believe that the best way to know one new country and its culture is to meet the people coming from there. Studying in Kyamk has given us lots of opportunities to be in an inter-national atmosphere and to communicate with people from all over the world. Most of you probably do not know that Ky-menlaakso University of Applied Sciences was awarded by the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education under the Erasmus+ Programme for the years 2014-2020 in 2013. And for degree students, if you want to travel, make new friends and have the best time of your life as the exchange students are doing here, why not apply to go for an exchange? Do not hesitate to con-tact Ulf Jensen-Munk at his office for more information.

Kouvola: the final frontier. These are the voyages of Ky-amk’s Freshmen. Their five hour mission: explore strange new bars, seek out jelly babies and alcoholic beverages. To boldly go where no - or pretty much every other - freshman has gone before (otherwise known as “Club Encore”).

Last wednesday it was time for the first party of the year to welcome the new students and help them find their way around town that much easier by sending them on a drunken run from bar to bar. Right af-ter the tutors Kupla is probably the one organisation that cares the most about the freshmen by making sure that they will remember the city centres layout by placing quizzes all around town on strategically clever points.

This parties theme (incase you didn’t get that from the intro): SCIFI. A very fitting topic, as this is a start into a new chapter of the Younglings lifes. A new step on the road... - Roads? Where you’re going, you don’t need roads.

-FRESHMAN PARTY- TO INFINITY AND BEYOND

As I mentioned before there was more to this party than it just being Kupla hosting an intergalactic keg-ger down at the Encore. The whole adventure started out at Bar Q where teams of five would get their maps and be send off on their merry way to under-take all sorts of tasks to show off their skill and clev-erness that would prove their worthiness to become one of us - one of us - one of us…

Anyway. There were tasks of designing a space suit from bubble wrap and tinfoil, balancing eggs on spoons or answering the really hard questions about life, the universe and everything. You could get ex-tra point by impressing the “game makers”. We saw people waltzing and some even made small videos.

The downside was that there weren’t as many cos-tumes this time around then the last times. I guess we can blame that on the weather though. It was frakking freezing. But that did not stop people from

For now: Welcome on board the mothership Kyamk, fellow space pirates and remember: don’t just hope for a successful year - make it so! Here is to another round and so say we all. For now, why don’t you smegging well smeg on, you adorable little smeggy smegging smeggers!

bravely travelling from bar to bar and complete one trial after another and collect their well deserved prize at the Encore. So far, you have done the impos-sible, and that makes us proud.

After the party the question was: Everybody remem-bered where you parked? Apparently everybody did. I am just guessing here but there was an alarmingly large amount of no Doctor activity going one.

I hope you all had a great time and are ready for another round. For one of the upcoming parties you can actually vote which theme you would most en-joy. There are three possible topics to pick from: Dis-ney Rated R, Tim Burton or Medieval/Renaissance.

You can also add suggestions for further parties:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/19SLbgTUlY2N-jLQD-zIDOqNEkR-op2DoL0tlRS7S2Q8/viewform

If you are interested in photography and design, this article is definitely for you!

From where shall we start? Ok, in 2010, Richard came up with an idea about trying to set up a photo hosting service, but soon he realized that it was not going to work because of the cost, so he had to start thinking about what to do, and he found it.

Richard stay ahead of the tech curve as much as possible and a lot of friends kept asking him if he had any news on upcoming tech/cameras etc. And the funny thing is a lot of them work in electronic stores and they would ask him about tech, so Richard decided to start PhotoKuva - an online magazine all about photography, design and some tech (ok let’s not lie; a lot of tech). The sites offer news and reviews about a wide range of photography and design products/services. Some of the areas he specializes in photography tutorials,

electronic gadgets, camera reviews, photography tips, camera accessories and camera equipment.

We know you are wondering where the name PhotoKuva came from. He told us that it came from a lot of thinking and searching (yes Google did help). He couldn’t find anything he liked so he decided to use a play on words like most sites these days. Photo in Finnish is Kuva and Kuva in English is Photo, so he puts them together and got PhotoKuva. He did try KuvaPhoto but it did not sound as good as PhotoKuva which works a lot better and he really likes it.

So now you got to know the story of PhotoKuva and Richard. Why not visit PhotoKuva: www.photokuva.com. Don’t worry if you don’t know Finnish, because everything is in English. And also remember to enter Insider’s competition and win a copy of PaintShop Ultimate!

Q: First tell me about the place where you are from.A: I am from Joensuu. I have a lot of friends there because I graduated from the Univer-sity of Applied Sciences. So, I have connec-tions to there and I used to be a teacher also there. I was teaching AutoCAD and Rinho lessons.

Q: So, why now you are here in Kouvola?A: Well, I wanted to find new interesting challenges basically and I had a good col-leaque in Joensuu he was a project manager in Kyamk. We were discussing several times about other opportunities for me in Kouvola and he said there was a new free job here because one guy left from here and also there was both projects concerning developing. I was really excited because I like that field. So, I came here as a project manager.

Q: What else are you doing at the university?A: I have one project now and I also teach AutoCAD and Rinho programs. Besides, I have product development courses.

Q: Why you started to learn these computer softwares? Why you chose it?A: When I started my studies at UAS, it was year 1999. That time there were a lot of good software on the market. It was some-thing new in visualization industry. I was fascinated about it. It gave me nice challenges and it was something that I was good at.

Q: What about your free time? Do you like to travel?A: Unfortunately, nowadays it is not so simple, I don’t have a lot of opportunities to travel because I have a big family but I really like to travel.

Q: What countries you visited already?A: Oh, quite a lot: Norway, Russia, Ire-land, Denmark and almost all of Europe. It is easier to say where in Europe I have not been.

Q: Which country do you like the most? Where would you like to come back again and again?A: Strangely enough I am very attracted to Croatia. I have so many good memo-ries related to this country and I really like it. Beautiful places, nice people, I es-pecially like the small villages and towns.

Q: Tell something about your plans for future?A: I am planning to boost students’ new business ideas and product ideas. This is what we should focus on. There are lots of things to do in that field.

Q: Could you say something for our students to achieve success?A: Enjoy your time! Push hard! Keep your doors open for any idea. Com-municate with foreign people because new ideas are always coming from the coalitions of people. They are creating a puzzle that works. Talk, talk, talk!

HOME MADE CHICKEN SOUP

INGREDIENTS: -any amount of chicken, the more the better -vegetables of your own choice, parsley and carrots recommended as a must have -salt,pepper, dried vegetable spice -water(depending on the amount you are making)

HOW TO: Boil water, then add the chicken. Cook the chicken for 20-30min, depending on how thick it is. Add vegetaba-bles, cook on small fire untill cooked through. Add spices and noodles if desired,. Bring to boil, and the soup is ready!

NOTE: Be careful not to overcook the meat or vegetables, as they will fall apart. The amount of vegetables and meat varies to amount of water and peo-ple you are making it for. The most important thing is to give them enough time to release their flavour. This meal is ex-tremely healthy. You can even add onion, it enhances the flavour of the chicken. The Marked Ones starts a new series of spin offs to the popular Paranormal Activity series. This time set in a latin american community of California, we follow Jesse and his friends as they witness unexplainable events that give insight to the loose ends of the paranormal activity films.Filmed in the same “found footage” style that has become the trademark to this film franchise series, we revisit the same jumpy scare scenes that have become known through the previous four Paranormal Activity films. Not only does The Marked Ones give very little away as to the origin and detail of the supernatural world in which these films take place, we are yet again stuck resolving the same storyline that started in 2007. Offering small plot explanations that lead to no resolved ending to the mysterious activity, more confusion as to why the film is a spin off and not another prequel (as it very much is) and more annoyance towards the sliced up mess that is found footage storytelling, we can only hope that Paranormal Activity 5 (coming out later this year) can finally show us the long awaited rev-elations that have thus taken five films worth to unravel. This franchise, that started off as one of the spookiest series in the past years is quickly joining the ranks of bizarre long running films that have people wondering where the creators are going with this. This film may not satisfy horror-fans with its lack of originality, but does make an effort to appeal with its use of parallel event storytell-ing. If you are looking into getting to know the Paranormal Activity series, watch the first few, skip the rest and watch this one. For a cheaper alternative, watch the trailer, its the same thing but in a smaller and less annoying format.
